Calling greatness This team has no proven catalyst … at least not yet
I
t’s an exciting day, clearly. Oklahoma, the nation’s very unremarkable, sixthranked team meets No. 15 Kansas State. Anticipation is understandably high. How good is OU, really? It is excitement fueled by angst and curiosity. Perhaps not the most exciting form of excitement, but very buzzworthy. But you know what might really drive people giddy? An arrival. Of the next superstar, or the next two or three great Sooners. Future All-Americans who really begin proving themselves today. It could be anybody. It could be nobody. Consider Landry Jones’ last seven games, 6 1/2 of which have been played without Ryan Broyles. Going back to Texas A&M last season through OU’s victory over Florida A&M, Jones has completed 58.7

percent (159 of 271) of his passes for 1,843 yards, seven touchdowns, seven interceptions and an efficiency rating of 119.16. Those numbers were generated against a few good teams, but no outstanding defenses. And that efficiency rating is well short of Jones’ breakout 2010 mark of 146.3. If the Sooner quarterback is to make one more run at being one of the nation’s best, today would be a good day for that run to begin. Consider Damien Williams. He’s averaging 12.95 yards per each of his 20 carries, but • See IDLE Page 14

THE BIG STORY: A RE THE Y FOR RE AL?
Proving themselves Sooners have a real barometer in the Wildcats By John Shinn
Transcript Sports Writer
Oklahoma linebacker Corey Nelson wasn’t sitting on a stool in the corner of a ring on Monday, but he looked like a fighter waiting on the opening bell. The sixth-ranked Sooners’ meeting with No. 15 Kansas State was still five days away, but just talking about the game made him rock back and forth in anticipation. “You can feel people getting excited more. You can feel people focusing in more than what they would usually do out there on the field,” he said. “It’s just a feeling. It’s
just something about it.” At 6:50 p.m. today at Owen Field, the Big 12 Conference opener for both the Sooners and Wildcats has that kind of anticipation because it offers a mix of validation and redemption for both teams. In OU’s case, it’s validation that’s needed. Despite the 2-0 start, the Sooners have fallen two spots since the preseason polls were released. A lackluster performance in the season opener against UTEP left many wondering if the Sooners were worthy of being the conference’s preseason favorite or if they actually • See CHANCE Page 9
“You’ll also be able to feel the tension with the players on the opposite side of the 50-yard line. It’s just this gut feeling that you have. Just as a football player, playing in games like these, you just have this feeling that, ‘Man, this is going to be a dogfight.” Corey Nelson

Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones throws a pass against Florida A&M two weeks ago. The challenge should be much more difficult for the Sooners today.

Sooner defenders must show up By John Shinn
Kansas State’s Collin Klein finds running room against North Texas last week. The Sooners need to slow the Wildcat quarterback today.

games. Here are five (or six) that OU will be expecting more from tonight: Casey Walker: The defensive tackle missed the first two games due to an
undisclosed non-football issue. Tonight will be his first game of the season. Walker couldn’t come back at better time. The Sooners • See WATCH Page 11
RUNNING GAME
n
Damien Williams has given OU’s running game a home run threat it’s lacked, but it’s the quarterback element that gives Kansas State the edge. Quarterback Collin Klein and running back John Hulbert will batter away at the Sooners all night. When it comes to running the football, the Wildcats have no peer in the Big 12 Conference.
PA S S I N G G A M E
n
Klein has greatly improved since his last last meeting against the Sooners. But OU quarterback Landry Jones has always played well against the Wildcats. The extra week to prepare should have helped OU’s young receivers. It’s Justin Brown and Trey Metoyer who should show much progress from the first two games.
PA S S D E F E N S E
n
The Sooners’ secondary will get one of its biggest tests of the season. It must run with receivers, but be a factor in the running game. Free safety Tony Jefferson’s sore ankle is something to watch. He’ll be essential in both areas. OU, however, gets the edge because of its pass rush. It has consistently pressured quarterbacks through two games.
RUN DEFENSE
n
OU gets defensive tackle Casey Walker back tonight and the senior’s presence will help. This is a game OU’s front seven has to win. It has the experience and talent. Kansas State isn’t far behind. It’s only allowed 2.9 yards per carry through three games and middle linebacker Arthur Brown is one of the best in the Big 12.
SPECIAL TEAMS
n
OU’s return game has improved this season and its coverage has been solid. Kicker Michael Hunnicutt and punter Tress Way won’t take backseats to anyone tonight. Kansas State, however, has a proven weapon with Tyler Lockett. He’s a threat to score any time he has the ball in his hands. Lockett’s ability is something OU can’t match.
I N TA N G I B L E S
n
There isn’t a team in the top 10 that has more doubters than OU. Tonight is a chance to prove its a legitimate Big 12 and national championship contender. It’s also an opportunity to win a 20th straight home game against a ranked foes. OU’s typically at its best in big home games. Tonight’s game qualfies. — John Shinn

Chance: A great opportunity • Continued from Page 4 have what it takes to stay in the national championship race. The second game against Florida A&M wasn’t going to seize anyone’s attention because it was against an FCS team. The opportunity to play a legitimate ranked team offers OU a chance to prove it’s for real. “This is our first big game, our first real test. Yeah, we’re approaching it like a Big 12 championship game,” offensive tackle Lane Johnson said. “We know K-State’s a good team. Last year, I think we kind of left them with a bad taste in their mouth. I think they’re going to be hungry when they come in.” When these teams met last season, Kansas State (3-0) was clawing its way up the polls after several seasons outside of them. They were undefeated and ready to stake their claim as a legitimate Big 12 title contender. Then, a week after a stunning loss at home to Texas Tech, OU went to Manhattan, Kan., and crushed the Wildcats, 58-17. It was a big game last year

and it’s a big game today. The Sooners need to prove that they are capable of playing dominant football against a quality opponent. Traditionally, OU has. Under coach Bob Stoops, the Sooners are 13-0 against ranked teams at Owen Field. All of those wins were by double digits and six were by 30 or more points. Making a statement when the opportunity arises is what championship caliber teams do when opportunity presents. OU’s got one tonight.
Stoops believes, win or lose, what happens tonight will tell him more about his team than either of the first two games. “To a degree it will,” he said. Stoops is not alone. The rest of the country will be watching. The Sooners know this is a chance to quell the unrest that’s emerged after their first two games. If the Sooners are a legitimate title contender they’ll prove it tonight. As Nelson rocked back
and forth you could tell he couldn’t wait to get started. “Yeah, you’ll be able to feel it,” he said. “You’ll also be able to feel the tension with the players on the opposite side of the 50-yard line. It’s just this gut feeling that you have. “Just as a football player, playing in games like these, you just have this feeling that, ‘Man, this is going to be a dogfight. We’re fixing to get after it.’” John Shinn Follow me @john_shinn jshinn@normantranscript.com

Watch: Defenders challenged • Continued from Page 5 need the 309-pound senior against the Wildcats’ violent running game. His impact won’t come in the form of tackles, but in where the line of scrimmage goes. If it’s neutral or moving toward the backfield, it means Walker and the other defensive tackles are playing well. If they’re getting pushed back into the linebackers, it means OU’s going to have a long night. Joseph Ibiloye: The strong-side linebacker was used so little in the first two games that the position’s not even listed on OU’s depth chart, moved in favor of the nickel back slot. That will change against the Wildcats. Ibiloye is going to see a lot of action and his ability as an outside linebacker will be tested. Corey Nelson had a huge game at the spot in last season’s meeting against the Wildcats. Ibiloye needs to do the same. Tony Jefferson and Javon Harris: Safeties don’t like playing against Kansas State. The Wildcats will

pound away until safeties crowd the line of scrimmage. Then a receiver will go running right down the middle of the field on a playaction pass. OU’s safeties must keep everything in front of them. Harris has played well in the first two games, but last year had a penchant for being too aggressive. If he reverts, Kansas State will take advantage. Jefferson suffered an ankle injury against Florida A&M. The
Wildcats will make him prove he’s healthy. Damien Williams: The running back is averaging 12.9 yards per carry through two games. He’s shown he can do some very impressive things with the ball in his hands. The Sooners need to give it to him more than 10 times. Williams can demonstrate tonight he’s capable of being the No. 1 rushing option. Landry Jones: Outside of one interception and
scrambling his way into a couple of sacks, Jones has played well. Tonight is his chance to show he belongs on that list of Heisman Trophy contenders with a prime time performance. The Sooners will widen the playbook tonight. The opportunity should be there for Jones to put up big numbers. John Shinn Follow me @john_shinn jshinn@normantranscript.com

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY
Making the most of it
Today’s Games
Pokes take advantage of QB’s skills By Jeff Latzke AP College Football Writer
STILLWATER — When an injury thrust backup quarterback J.W. Walsh into action six plays into Oklahoma State’s last game, coach Mike Gundy got onto his headset and asked offensive coordinator Todd Monken a question: “What have we got for him to run?” “Well, I don’t know,” Monken responded. “He took about 10 snaps all week. I don’t know what to tell you.” The plan Monken concocted on the fly proved to be plenty effective, with the Cowboys setting a school record with 742 yards of total offense in a 65-21 win against Louisiana-Lafayette. As Oklahoma State (2-1) moves forward with starter Wes Lunt’s return uncertain, it won’t be as simple as having Walsh run the same plays cooked up for his injured
teammate. Lunt fits more closely into the mold of predecessor Brandon Weeden, a drop-back passer who stays in the pocket. Walsh has similarities to Zac Robinson, the Cowboys’ quarterback before Weeden, who was as likely to take off running as he was to throw the ball. “There’s no question that you have to call it different,” Monken said. “You can’t call the same things. They’re built differently.” The good news for Oklahoma State is that there’s an extra week to figure it out, and to give Lunt more time to recover. No. 12 Texas (3-0) comes to Stillwater on Sept. 29, bringing in a highly regarded defense that’s allowing 328 yards per game — less than half the Bowl Subdivision-best 687 yards OSU is averaging. “We can’t change really what we do, and I think the best way to describe it is we

Walsh (4) celebrates with running back Jeremy Smith after scoring last Saturday against Louisiana-Lafayette. just run our plays and we fit him in to where we think it’s advantageous for what J.W. brings,” Gundy said. Monken said that Walsh got only six of the 37 snaps in Oklahoma State’s team session during practice last Wednesday. Lunt gets the lion’s share as the starter, and there’s even more emphasis
since he’s a freshman who needs the work. But that left little in the way of preparation for Walsh. “You just start to checkmark things that we’ve done a lot of, that he’s done a bunch of, that wasn’t specifically for a guy like Wes,” Monken said. • See IDLE Page 13

Terrapins really want this one Maryland next in line to try slowing the Mountaineers By David Ginsburg AP Sports Writer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland wide receiver Kevin Dorsey has already earned his diploma, received three varsity letters and been to a bowl game. Here’s something the fifthyear senior hasn’t done: been a part of a victory over West Virginia, a shortcoming he and the rest of Maryland’s upperclassmen hope to rectify Saturday against the No. 8 Mountaineers in Morgantown. “I guess that’s the only blemish on my career,” Dorsey said Tuesday. “It would be incredible to beat
them, especially my last time being there as a player.” The Terrapins have lost six straight to West Virginia since a 41-7 victory in the 2004 Gator Bowl. It’s also been five years since Maryland defeated a Top 10 team. With an upset win in a hostile environment Saturday, the Terps can end both streaks. “It would be awesome, especially because I’ve got a little bit of a grudge against them after being hurt in Morgantown two years ago,” said senior left tackle Justin Gilbert, who sustained a season-ending knee injury during a 31-17 defeat in 2010. “Coming out with a W would be huge in our last non-con-
ference game, going into the bye week.” In a tradition that began long ago, when the Terrapins beat a Top 10 team a tombstone is placed outside the practice field to mark the achievement. The last tombstone was stuck in the ground in November 2007, after Maryland upset a Matt Ryan-led Boston College team that was ranked eighth. “We definitely want to try to add another tombstone to the gravesite this weekend,” sophomore nose tackle Darius Kilgo said. Beating West Virginia (20) is a tall order. The Terrapins are coming off a 24-21 home loss against Connecti-
cut and will need to play nearflawless football against a Mountaineers squad that has scored 111 points in its two wins. “It would be huge,” senior defensive end A.J. Francis said. “I’ve never got a tombstone before. It would be great to beat a team we never beat, a rival, a team that doesn’t like us and we don’t like them.” Maryland’s struggle against West Virginia extends beyond the players. Coach Randy Edsall is 1-7 against the Mountaineers, including 1-6 as head coach at UConn, but he hopes the team can draw encouragement from last year’s narrow defeat.

Idle: Walsh will have had many more reps if he draws the start against Texas • Continued from Page 12 “He still screwed all that up, but he made some plays and started running around. Holy cow. Half the time when he’s running, I’m yelling at him for what he’s doing, but that’s just him.”
Coaches have said that Walsh’s running ability has been hard to evaluate through training camp since Cowboys don’t tackle in practice. What could be a scramble for a big gain is blown dead if a defender gets a hand
on Walsh. “It was just a lot of fun to get out there and do what we were able to do offensively,” Walsh said. “We were fortunate enough to have everybody play the way they did and just do what we do. It was
just a lot of fun. “Having the circumstances to be able to get out there and run a little bit, it was a lot of fun and I was glad we got to do that.” Lunt’s leg has been immobilized this week to help it
heal faster, leaving more time for Walsh to run the offense and prepare. Gundy doesn’t know yet when Lunt will return. “It doesn’t really matter. No one really cares,” Monken said. “Whoever your
quarterback is, you better come up with a plan that gives you a chance to move it because no one cares. They want to see you win and get excited and show up at the game and stop (complaining) that the sky’s falling.”

Horning: Who is it? • Continued from Page 3 he’s done it against UTEP, Florida A&M, and not early, against fresh defenders. Bob Stoops said it doesn’t matter who OU’s No. 1 running back is, a statement he must know isn’t true, because if Williams can be the next big thing, he should start today. And if he has a superstar future in front of him, he might begin to show it, right from the start, against a real team like Kansas State. Consider Tom Wort. A great player and leader whose time has come? Maybe, but Wort has yet to be confused with Rocky Calmus, Teddy Lehman, Rufus Alexander, Curtis Lofton or Travis Lewis. Through two games, he has 12 tackles, tied for team best with Javon Harris. He has played well this season. If he can tackle K-State quarterback Collin Klein six or seven times today, all without having to chase him into the secondary, maybe he begins taking his place among a long line of great linebackers. Kenny Stills? There was the way he fin-
ished last season (20 catches, 239 yards, zero TDs in five games after Broyles’ season ended) and the way he’s begun this one (16 catches, 241 yards, two TDs). Who’s the real Stills? If he’s one of the best, assuming Jones is accurate enough, there’s no time like today to keep it going against a much better foe. It’s not only about today. After today, OU is off another week before three of its next four games include Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas in Dallas and Notre Dame in Norman. If they’re not superstars today, it’s not like the door slams shut forever. Still, if this is going to be a memorable season, a few Sooners, whoever they are, need to begin taking flight. And because OU has played two bad teams, and because it finished last season so poorly, there is not one proven catalyst on the roster. Not one. Should one (or more) identify himself today? That would be exciting. Clay Horning Follow me @clayhorning cfhorning@normantranscript.com
