THE VIEW

It’s Pokes’ story Hard to accept , but new era of Bedlam parity upon us like Oklahoma today. Barely. Put a gun to my head and I’d take the points. Still, I can’t quite pick the Pokes. And there alone may be all one needs to understand about how hard it is fully embrace the changing face of Bedlam. The line keeps dropping, and still the Sooners are about a touchdown favorite. Why is a good question. OU can’t stop the run and OSU may have the league’s best running back. The Sooners enter struggling to win their last two games. The Cowboys enter dominating their last two games. Yes, the game is at Owen Field today. But Owen Field is the only place OU has lost this season. The Sooners have a better record. But if the refs catch Texas’ goal-line fumble way back when, both teams have the same

record. OU won last season … Oh, that’s right, OU didn’t win last season. The Sooners were driven out of Boone Pickens Stadium 44-10. Still, it’s OU by a touchdown. Bob Stoops struggles to acknowledge the change in the series. Did last year’s game change the perception of OSU, he was asked. “You’d have to ask them,” Stoops said. “I’d always had great respect for them before last year.” Which is terrific and meaningless. Because coaches are like Will Rogers with “great respect.” Wake • See HORNING Page 14

THE BIG STORY: A RE AL BRIGHT SPOT

Receivers catching on Sooners’ aerial assault includes plethora of options By John Shinn Transcript Sports Writer

The last edition of Bedlam was ugly for Oklahoma. Its offense was in a late-season rut after star receiver Ryan Broyles was injured. Oklahoma State helped keep it there, handing the Sooners a 34-point loss. The teams will meet again today at Owen Field and much has changed. One of the biggest changes is the Sooners’ receiving corps. It’s a different group than the one the Cowboys last faced. It’s also playing at a much higher level. “I think that’s been pretty

obvious for the last several weeks,” OU coach Bob Stoops said. “They’re all on the same page and playing pretty consistently together and we’ve been spreading the ball out to all of them, which is the most important thing and big deal, too.” Quarterback Landry Jones is coming off a career performance against West Virginia, throwing for 554 yards and six touchdowns in OU’s 50-49 come-from-behind victory. Four of those touchdowns went to wide receiver Kenny Stills, including the gamewinner with 24 seconds to go. • See CATCH Page 10

OKL A HOMA at OKL A HOMA STATE: BRE A K ING DOWN TODAY’S G AME

Fast start might take Sooners far edlam won’t decide the Big 12 championship this season. Oklahoma still has a shot. Oklahoma State is out of the race, but still jockeying for bowl positioning. The annual meeting between the 14thFive ranked things to Sooners watch and the John Shinn 22ndranked Cowboys lacks last season’s national appeal. Still, this game has a history of offensive fireworks that makes it must-see viewing. OU would like to keep that one-sided. Here are five keys to that quest.

B

Often, the Sooners are best when they can get Trey Millard (33) going early. Getting off to a fast start could be crucial in today’s Bedlam game. AP Photo

Set up the pass: The biggest edge in this game is the Sooners’ passing game. They have a quarterback making his 48th career start while the Cowboys have a combina-

tion of two freshmen and a junior at the position. Use the advantage and come out flinging the ball all over the field. Want to put • See WATCH Page 11

RUNNING GAME

Damien Williams has been OU’s most productive back since 2008 and Brennan Clay is a very capable backup. Blake Bell gives OU’s running game an exclamation point most teams lack. But the best ball carrier in Bedlam is OSU’s Joseph Randle. He’s been a workhorse all season and expect him to carry the load again today.

PA S S I N G G A M E

Landry Jones will be making his 47th career start start today and fourth in the Bedlam rivalry. That kind of experience is invaluable in a game where emotions are boiling. The experience is something the Cowboys’ Clint Chelf, J.W. Walsh and Wes Lunt haven’t had time to accumulate.

PA S S D E F E N S E

The Sooners have made enormous leaps defending the pass since these teams last met. Hard to argue against the best secondary in the Big 12 calling Owen Field home. The Sooners have only allowed seven passing touchdowns this season. The Cowboys have given up 14. There’s a large gap that OU should be able to exploit.

RUN DEFENSE

OU no longer sells out to stop the run. The bend-but-don’t-break style they’ve played has made it vulnerable to plodding running games. The Cowboys have remained steadfast in stopping the run and are holding teams to less than 4 yards per carry. The gap isn’t enormous, but the Cowboys’ scheme has been better.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The best player today could be OSU kicker/punter Quinn Sharp. However, the Sooners come close to matching him with kicker Michael Hunnicutt (the Big 12’s most accurate kicker) and Tress Way (one of the league’s best punters). Also, OU’s return and cover units are at the top of the league. Always take the unit over the player.

I N TA N G I B L E S

The Sooners have lost three of their last eight home games. But you have to go all the way back to 2001 — OSU’s last victory in Norman — to find a competitive Bedlam game at Owen Field. The Sooners have outscored the Cowboys 170-40 in the last four Bedlam games in Norman. — John Shinn

Catch: So many good options • Continued from Page 4 However, slot receivers Jalen Saunders and Sterling Shepard combing for 11 catches 220 yards. Wide receiver Justin Brown had six catches for 112 yards. All three have had at least one game with 100 receiving yards this season. Brown and Saunders have done it on multiple occasions. Jones’ comfort with all four has grown throughout the season. OU’s passing game appears to be hitting on all cylinders heading into Bedlam. “It would be more of Landry getting comfortable with the receivers,” Stills said. “It’s hard, especially with what we do in feeling out zones and coverages. Landry has to know the receiver and know where they’re going to be. He’s gotten really comfortable with us in the past few weeks and that’s helped us make a few more plays.” That couldn’t be said about Jones’ relationship with the Sooners’ receivers at this point last season. After Broyles went down, the passing game was a mess. OU

tried to move Stills to slot receiver, but he was slow to adjust. The Cowboys shifted their coverage to slowing Stills and left it up to others to beat them. They didn’t come close. Stills is the only receiver OU will likely use today that played last December at Boone Pickens Stadium. Brown was at Penn State. Saunders was at Fresno State. Shepard was wrapping up his high school career at Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City.

Today will be their Bedlam debut. “I know this is a big in-state rivalry,” Saunders said. “I’m just excited to be playing in it.” The Sooners are excited to have them. They bring an aspect to this game OU lacked last season. Jones has thrown 12 touchdown passes in just the last three games. He’s spread the ball around the entire field and feasted on what defenses have given. The receivers

have helped him make throwing the ball look easy. “I think those guys have grown a lot in the way they’ve played, in the way they’ve prepared and how hard they’ve worked,” Jones said. “I can’t say enough about how much we’ve progressed as an offense with those guys and how explosive and how many plays we’ve made because of who they are.” John Shinn Follow me @john_shinn jshinn@normantranscript.com

Watch: Rush the quarterback • Continued from Page 5 the Cowboys’ young quarterbacks at a real disadvantage? Get them in a shootout. This is a scenario the Sooners should really benefit from. Stop the run first: OU’s given up over 700 rushing yards the last two games against West Virginia and Baylor. One of the reasons is OU went with a defensiveback heavy scheme, severely hampering its ability to stop the run. That can’t happen today. OSU running back Joseph Randle is the best running back in the Big 12 and the Cowboys’ offensive line is too good not to abuse defensive backs playing two yards from the line of scrimmage. OU will have to play linebackers Tom Wort and Corey Nelson today, and they will have to play well. Special teams. The Cowboys’ special teams ignited routs of West Virginia and Texas Tech in the last two games. They’ve gotten big returns and blocked punts. OU cannot

afford to give up easy scoring opportunities. The Sooners’ special teams have been a positive throughout the season. Still, this a game where one big play can quickly swing momentum. Special teams will play a huge role. Perhaps it will be in the return game. It might even be blocking a kick. If the Sooners can just keep this area a draw, they should be in good shape. Bring the pressure: The Sooners didn’t have one

sack last week against West Virginia. The inability to stop the run had a lot to do with it, but the defensive line must apply more pressure. OU hasn’t blitzed much this season. It’s left getting to the quarterback up to its front four. The group must do a better job today. Play well early: The Sooners have lost twice at Owen Field this season. Those loses were to teams that have both been ranked

No. 1 in the BCS standings — current No. 1 Notre Dame and former No. 1 Kansas State. Both those teams did a great job of taking the Owen Field crowd out of the game early. The Sooners can’t let that happen again today. OU fans want to have an impact today. Their team having some early success will foster that environment. Quarterbacks the focus Ohio State, Michigan hard to stop By Rusty Miller AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The most potent weapons for No. 20 Michigan and No. 4 Ohio State are undoubtedly their quarterbacks. Pity their poor defenses in the big showdown today. Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson, who may line up everywhere but behind the center due to an arm injury, are the speedsters who lead the Wolverines’ attack. Meanwhile the Buckeyes rely on Braxton Miller, who likes to make tacklers grab handfuls of air when he’s not completing long passes. Stopping, or at least slowing down, the trio will be the main objective for both teams. Good luck with THAT. Gardner provided six touchdowns, three running and three passing, in Michi-

gan’s landslide win over Iowa in The Big House last week. Robinson, with 41 touchdowns and 4,273 rushing yards in his career, dabbled at tailback and wide receiver while picking up 98 yards on 13 carries. Ohio State is in a quandary, having to figure out just how Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges will utilize the two. Even he doesn’t seem to know. “You don’t know — nobody knows — until the lights go on,” Borges said. So the Buckeyes must prepare for a little bit of everything. “I just know something’s coming,” Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer said of the possible sleight of hand. “You just know something’s coming.” Michigan coach Brady Hoke has been tight-lipped about his plans this week. Ohio State is having to prepare for two Michigan QBs: Denard Robinson, left, and Devin Gardner. Ten player of the week on offense, but Hoke hasn’t ruled out Robinson — famous for his lengthy streaks to the goal line as much as for not tying his shoelaces — under center. The Wolverines refused to even hint at what they might do. “I never caught a pass in a game before,” Robinson said innocently.

During closed practices this week he wore a padded compression sleeve on his right elbow, which suffered nerve damage from a hit earlier this season. Asked if he can throw, he grinned and said, “You’ll see on Saturday.” Despite the respect they have for Gardner, Ohio State’s • See GRUDGE Page 13

OSU adds more variety to offense Pokes using freshman backup quarterback Walsh as short-yardage option By Andrew Glover CNHI News Service

STILLWATER — Throughout the season Oklahoma State University coach Mike Gundy has discussed his team struggling in short yardage situations. Saturday against Texas Tech, Gundy found his answer. The staff created a package for redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh. Walsh, called J-Dub by teammates, threw and handed off for touchdowns in a 59-21 victory. Hence the “Dubtruck” formation was born.

“(Walsh) gave us an edge on short-yardage and goal line. We’ve not been very good on shortyardage and goal line here for three years” Gundy said. “So we’re trying to work through it and find ways to become a better short-yardage/goal line team in our system and he allowed us to improve by his running ability.” Walsh was thought to be out for the season after suffering a knee injury against Iowa State, but showed the crowd of over 55,000 that he was perfectly fine with a four-yard run for a first down. On second-and-goal

from the two, Walsh completed a pass to Kye Staley for Oklahoma State’s first touchdown. The redshirt freshman said it was nice to be back on the field after missing the last three games. “It felt amazing to get out there for a little bit and contribute to the team,” Walsh said. “It’s fun to play the game. Any chance I get, even if it’s just to hand the ball off it’s still fun to get out there any way I can.” Gundy said Walsh showed him and the staff he could play during Wednesday’s practice. “He ran really well

Wednesday in practice,” Gundy said. “At that point we felt comfortable with him being able to play at a high level with speed and being able to take a hit.” In the second quarter, Walsh ran for a touchdown to up the Cowboys’ lead to 27-7. Walsh handed off to Joseph Randle for a touchdown in the third quarter. The redshirt freshman quarterback said the coaches had a great game plan. “We just came out and executed and got the job done,” Walsh said. “All that is a testament to the coaches, who kept us focused.”

Grudge: Quarterbacks will be focus when Wolverines, Buckeyes tangle today • Continued from Page 12 defense knows it can’t ignore Robinson. “I know about Denard here and there just from Big Ten media day, and he is a good guy,” said linebacker Etienne Sabino, himself just

back from an injury. “But on the field, we aren’t friends.” Gardner watched the video from the Iowa game, a 42-17 laugher, and saw the problems the combo created. “Not just when Denard had the ball — of course he

made big plays — but when he didn’t have the ball we had our even bigger plays,” he said. “Just the attention that he gets is amazing — it just helps us succeed.” Ohio State defensive lineman Garrett Goebel said hav-

ing two quarterbacks on the field creates double the headaches. “It’s always hard to even prepare for one quarterback, (especially) when it’s Denard,” he said. “Two quarterbacks makes it tougher.”

Gardner was recruited by Meyer when he was the head coach at Florida. He was also pursued by Ohio State. Like a lot of athletes on both sides in what is already a grudge match, he has a sizable chip on his shoulder.

“They didn’t offer me a scholarship,” he said of the Buckeyes. “I was pretty bitter.” Only after he had committed to Michigan did Ohio State make an offer. He posted a picture of himself online burning the letter.

brethren, but most Sooners must have that part of it told to them. As OSU gets better and better, it’s bound to count less natives on its roster simply as a matter of geography and density of population, but it will still put many more Okies on the field than OU today and you’re nuts if you don’t think that provides an emotional edge. “I broke a lot of hearts when I came here,” said OSU fullback Kye Staley, a Guthrie Bluejay before he became a Poke. It all points to one thing. Bedlam may be OU’s game today. The Sooners are at home and, holy cow, are they really going to lose three times at Owen Field this season? Yet the real Bedlam story is the continued emergence of OSU, because the Cowboys might be the better team, even two years in a row, and should only get better going forward. Does he feel like the game has become bigger? “All I know is I have to play it and it’s been a rival game,” Stoops said. “It didn’t start last year.” Right, it started back when the Cowboys, then Aggies, weren’t any good and calling them a rival was like humoring them. OSU offensive coordinator Todd Monken has a better perspective. “Things only become rivalries when you make them competitive for a championship,” he said. That was true last season, but I’m not sure a championship is required. But competitiveness is everything and OSU’s no longer riding in Bedlam’s back seat. Last year, the Cowboys didn’t even ride shotgun. They may not today. The Sooner Nation hopes its team feels what it feels.
