(MCT) Q: I love the summer weather but hate the sound of our air conditioner running all the time. It just keeps reminding me how much we’ll be paying in utility bills. What do you suggest are some of the
key things we can do to keep our home cool and comfortable in hot weather but keep our bills affordable? A: I’ve gone through my files from the past 20 years or so and tried to figure out what people often do that drives up their summer energy bills. You might have heard all these before, but each of them is clearly a common problem for lots of people that could be avoided and would result in big energy savings without sacrificing home comfort. I’ve only got room on this page for a few of
them, but each can make a huge impact on your home comfort and your bills. For example, many people keep their thermostat on the “fan” set-
ting when their air conditioner is on, mistakenly thinking this will cool off the home. When it’s on the fan setting, air is constantly being blown through the ducts as the

Finally, even though I have written what seems like thousands of times that you need to keep the filter on your cooling and heating equipment clean and changed on a regular basis, I talk to people constantly who haven’t changed their filters in months (sometimes even years!). I’ve heard them say they looked at the filter and it wasn’v too dirty, other times they say they don’t even know where the filter is. I can guarantee one thing: if your filter is dirty, the air can’t flow properly, and the cooling and heating equipment won’t operate efficiently. Your house won’t get comfortable, your utility bills will be higher, and you’re possibly even damaging the mechanical equipment.
