Looking for other gardening fools online By Mariana Greene The Dallas Morning News

(MCT) I don’t like cold weather, so I am ignoring the garden chores piling up at my house. Eventually, we’ll have one of those unseasonably balmy days. When that day falls on a weekend, I’ll pull on my gloves and start raking and clipping in a cleanup marathon. Until then, I’m blogging by a snapping fire or from the deepfeathered comfort of my bed, sometimes with a sneezing, 14-

week-old chick for company. (Hey, it’s not like I can feed it chicken noodle soup!) I’m not writing on blogs, though; I’m reading them. That’s a guilty pleasure for me, in which I dare not indulge at work. One blog leads to another, and another, and before I know it I have my credit card out to pay for seed packets or a new garden ornament. I look for blogs that tell me something I don’t know: a new plant to try, appealing garden products to

consider, winning ways with mixed containers and new (or new to me) resources. Rarely, I come across a blogger who supplies me with all of the above and more. Margaret Roach is one of those bloggers. A Way to Garden, which she started in 2008 after leaving New York City and Martha Stewart Living for“a cottage upstate, is clever, informative, inspiring, enjoyable to read and pretty to look at. Just this month I was mesmer-

ized by an old video of a lifelong Connecticut gardener named Ruth Stout (18841980). Stout wrote a book in 1961 called “Gardening Without Work,” with the subtitle For the Aging, the Busy & the Indolent. Somehow Roach discovered a series of homely videos posted on YouTube that feature Stout, gray and stooped, ambling through her vegetable patch and showing us her nowork secrets. Even though I am decades younger than she was at the time, I see my future — heavily (con’t. on page 6

They’re attractive, longlasting and feel nice on the feet, say decorators and textiles experts. They’re part of a “wonderful tradition,” says Larchmont, N.Y.based decorator Libby Cameron, co-author of “Sister Parish Design: On Decorating” (St. Martin’s Press, $35). “Hooked rugs were generally handmade by women and designed by women,” Cameron says, and were usually quite colorful. Strips of fabric were cut from worn-out or stained clothing or leftover cloth. A special hook was used to form loops with the strips in a

backing of woven cloth, which could be burlap, linen or another material. The strips were dyed in various colors and used to make patterns, often floral or geometric designs. Those colors and patterns are still part of the appeal. “Hooked rugs are very colorful, and they’re good rugs,” says Michael Richardson, coowner of J’adore Home and Garden in Kansas City. “They’re much more fun.” He adds that certain patterns will pair with any style of decorating. “It’s all personal preference.” The Tapestry rug

Dyson Air Multiplier meets fandom By Dan Neil Los Angeles Times

(MCT) With his company’s various cyclonic gizmos — track-ball vacuum cleaners and wall-mounted hand dryers and the like — industrial designer and inventor James Dyson has emerged as the people’s aerodynamicist, a tamer of vortexes and laminar flow, the Edison of air. Familiar to American consumers from his role as company pitchman, the handsome and terribly rich Englishman is probably best known for the company’s “dual cyclone” upright vacuum, in which Dyson takes evident pride. That’s too bad because, in my opinion, it’s a wretched eyesore, a vaguely Gatling-gun-looking device made of Nerf gun plastic, available in a variety of colors, all hideous. Actually, from a design perspective, there isn’t a vacuum on the market that can touch my old Electrolux. But with Dyson’s new Air Multiplier — a high-tech re-imagining of the common household fan that seems to charm a breeze out of empty

space — the man has secured a place in whatever industrial design museum you care to name. It functions beautifully and looks great too. This thing is flat-out brilliant. You, of course, want to know how it works. The base of the unit contains a high-power fan — an impeller, technically. Pressurized air is then forced through a narrow circular slit (1.3 millimeters) at the back edge of the device’s distinctive hoop. This structure is essentially an annular wing, or barrel-shaped airfoil. As the jet of air flows over the inner diameter, it accelerates across the surface, then begins to tumble into wafts of pillowy turbulence. This accelerated cylinder “entrains” surrounding air so that the volume of air that’s ultimately moved is 15 times the volume originally moved by the impeller. Got all that? Or you could just say it’s magic. There are many things about the Air Multiplier that are delightful. First, the personal electric fan has remained relatively unchanged since

the late 19th century, and before that you’d have to go back to the Hittites, slaves and palm fronds. You have to give Dyson full marks for so boldly reconceptualizing something so familiar and functional. This is the proverbial better mousetrap. Second, you just know some little kid, marveling over the mysteries of applied fluid dynamics, will eventually become a great physicist all because his folks put an Air Multiplier in his nursery. And speaking of little kids, which I have, point No. 3: There is no way little fingers or tongues can get diced up in the Dyson fan. The Air Multiplier does all the usual fan tricks. It oscillates 90 degrees on its swiveling base, as well as tilts up and down through a range of about 30 degrees. A variable speed knob allows users to select airflow volume, anything between gentle breeze and kite weather. But let’s not kid ourselves. The Dyson Air Multiplier is not so superior that people would spend $300 or more just to keep cool. No, people will buy

the Air Multiplier to be cool. Here too it can help, because the thing is simply lovely: futuristic, sleek, vaguely enigmatic, like a tabletop antenna to the afterlife. The 12-inch model I tested ($329) had the dark charcoalcolored plastic housing (also available in white and silver) with a buff cobalt finish on the airfoil surface. My only tweak to the design might be to find a way to dial a couple of decibels out of the turbine’s operation. That said, the device I tested was a preproduction unit; the units just hitting store shelves now FIRST TIME, AND REPEAT HOMEBUYERS TAX CREDITS EXPIRE 04-30-10. ACT NOW!

While these heat sources can help reduce energy bills and keep homes warmer, experts say users should be aware of - and take steps to mitigate potential fire and carbon monoxide risks. “Space heaters and other alternative heating solutions offer costeffective ways to keep your family warm throughout the winter without heating the whole house, allowing you to lower your thermostat to reduce your energy bills,” says Eric Sowder, senior vice president of home improvement retailer Lowe’s. “Many products have built-in safety features like automatic shutoffs, anti-tipping devices and heat guards, but be sure to follow all manufacturers’ instructions for use and placement of heating devices to avoid serious home injuries and help you rest easy throughout the winter.” About 67 percent of American households use fuel-burning appliances and equipment

• Be sure gas appliances like stoves and clothes dryers are properly adjusted and serviced. • Never turn on the gas cooking range in an effort to heat your home. • Don’t use a gas or charcoal grill inside the house or in a closed garage.

using a space heater, make sure you’ve accomplished these basic energy-saving steps first. Sowder advises: • Improve insulation. Adding insulation and sealing air drafts can trim up to 20 percent off your heating costs. • Installing a programmable thermostat can save you around $180 per year when used correctly to automatically lower the temperature when you’re out of the house. • Thermal window curtains, like the Eclipse brand available at Lowe’s, can save up to 25 percent on heating

and cooling bills, block 99 percent of light and reduce noise up to 40 percent. When using a supplemental heat source to save energy and money this winter, follow this advice from the Home Safety Council and Lowe’s to prevent fire and CO dangers: Reduce fire risk from space heaters • Be sure your space heater has been tested for safety. A label on the bottom will indicate if it’s been tested by an independent agency look for the initials ETL, UL or CSA. • Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that

can burn, including furniture, people, pets and curtains. An adult should always be present in the room when a space heater is running. • Turn heaters off before you leave a room or go to sleep. • Heaters should never be used to dry clothing or blankets. Minimize CO threats • Place at least one CO alarm in your home near sleeping areas. • Have your home’s central heating system inspected, cleaned and tuned by a trained professional who knows how to repair leaks and other problems.

Fireplace and wood stove safety • Never burn trash, cardboard boxes or Christmas trees in your fireplace or wood stove; they burn unevenly and may contain poisons or cause a fire. Only burn seasoned hardwood, like oak, ash or maple in your fireplace or wood-burning stove. • Get your chimney inspected and cleaned every year by a professional chimney sweep. • Before you use the fireplace, be sure to open the flue and keep embers inside fireplaces with sturdy screens or glass doors. You can conserve energy, live a greener lifestyle and combat volatile heating costs with a high efficiency fireplace or stove. Do you use every room in your house every day? If not, try zone heating the areas where you spend the most time with an efficient fireplace or stove. It will cut down on the amount of fuel consumed by your furnace and can reduce home heating bills by 20 to 40 percent, according to the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association. Simply turn down the central thermostat and let the fireplace heat where you live. This works whether your fireplace is fueled by natural gas, liquid propane, wood, pellets or other materials.
