Make sure that its needles are fresh, green, and firmly

ifier. When builders of new houses create “dry” basements, they start on the outside, not inside, and that’s where someone who knows what he or she is doing should start.
——— Q: I have an older house with bathroom wainscoting covered by lead paint partly covered by tile. I’d like to remove the rest of the tile, smooth the combination of paint and adhesive, and paint it. My concern is the lead dust when I pull off the tiles, and my idea is to wet around and behind each tile as much as possible before pulling one off, wear a mask, and keep the window open and the door closed. I’ve discussed this with a plumber and also with a contractor who was in the house for other reasons. Both say I worry
too much and that the amount of lead is insignificant. I suspect that they prefer to believe this, but that it’s not true. I would value your opinion, as well as any suggestions you might have. A: I always err on the side of caution. Take every precaution you’re planning to take, and check the Web site of state and federal environmental agencies for their advice as well. It may even be wise to have one of the tiles tested for lead, especially if you have children younger than 6 — the most vulnerable to lead poisoning. There is probably not very much lead dust, as the plumber and contractor say, but there is enough to track it around the house on the soles of your shoes.
——— Q: I have noticed my roof is stained black, making it look horrible and perhaps damaging it. Is there something I could do to remove this marking? A: This question appears almost as often as algae on roofs. The black stuff is an algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it thrives on asphalt shingles on the shady roofs of houses, where it has constant moisture. When roofing manufacturers began making fiberglass shingles as older materials disappeared from the market, they added ground-up limestone to make the shingles heavier. The algae appear to thrive on limestone. Manufacturers are changing the mix. Some add copper filings to

Roofers are now nailing copper or zinc strips at the highest points of roofs so that rain washes copper and zinc down on the algae, killing it. ——— Q: We bought a house with a wall of mirrors in the master bedroom. I want to remove them. How do I do that? A: They’re probably glued right to the wall, which means lots of work and damaged plaster or wallboard. You could use a solvent to take care of the glue and loosen the mirrors, sand the remaining adhesive off the wall, make any repairs, prime the walls as if they had new drywall, then paint. Someone else suggested steaming the mirrors off the wall and loosening the adhesive as one would wallpaper paste. But the glue used for sticking mirrors to a wall is different from paste. (MCT) Those of you who have never grown a cyclamen are missing one of the great pleasures in coolseason gardening. The cyclamen is one of the most popular Christmas plants in Europe, but it lost its place on the pedestal to the poinsettia here in the United States. That’s OK because we have room for all Christmas plants. You simply cannot beat the cyclamen for the number of flowers it produces and its long period of bloom. It comes in the traditional holiday colors of red and white, but the shades of pink and purple will leave you mesmerized as well. Many times we don’t appreciate the contribution of foliage to the overall beauty of the plant. Cyclamen is one example of a plant whose foliage contributes significantly to the plant’s beauty. Most cyclamen you see for sale have some pattern of silver or gray variegation in their heart-shaped leaves. Another thing I like about the cyclamen is their ability to tolerate cool conditions. Cyclamen love temperatures from 40 to 60 degrees. That is the average temperature range outside during the holidays for many parts of the coun-
try. This means the pot near the front door where a geranium bloomed all summer now can be filled with cyclamen for Christmas. Most think about using them indoors, and with a little care, your cyclamen still will be blooming as Valentine’s Day approaches. In a recent column, I talked about cyclamen making a great combination with poinsettias. There are so many great choices for cyclamen companions that will really stretch your imagination and make you wonder why you never thought of them before. I’ll start simply. Just like the Diamond Frost euphorbia partners well with poinsettias, it also is incredible with cyclamen. One of the showiest partnerships can be created using Goldilocks lysimachia. This will work with any color of cyclamen flower as you get the real contrast from the lime green foliage of Goldilocks that tumbles outward from the container. Another stunning companionship can be made with variegated forms of the common sage Salvia officinalis. It’s not creeping like Goldilocks but makes a great mounding, slightly spreading partner. Lastly, consider ajuga
as a partner. Some of the highly variegated forms could be a clash of variegation, but some of the chocolate-colored leaf selections provide just the right amount of pizzazz you are looking for. Keep the cyclamen evenly moist but never soggy. When watering, I like to use a little can with a spout to place the water around the edge of the container without watering the crown or center of the plant directly. I mentioned earlier that cyclamen may very well be blooming for Valentine’s Day, but honestly, it’s not uncommon for them to bloom from the holidays through April. This winter seems to be a little unusual, so if yours is on a porch or patio and bone-chilling temperatures are in the forecast, set the cyclamen inside until temperatures moderate. This usually happens rather quickly in zones 7-10. (MCT) It’s beginning to look a lot like a classic Christmas with tree ornaments trending toward the holiday colors of red, green and white. “Traditional colors and motifs will be popular because of the nostalgic feelings these items evoke — especially during this time of the year,” says Abby Buford with Lowe’s. “Heirloom ornaments — or even replicas that look like heirlooms — along with handmade decorations are increasingly popular.” A dash into other stores tells a similar
Christmas story. At K-mart, Martha Stewart creates visions of sugar plums with novelty ornaments that feature miniature stockings, mice and jingle bells, each ornament priced an affordable $3.99. Her tree skirts in red, green, gold or silver are among the best, regularly priced at $19.95. Wal-Mart’s tree decorations — tiny red poinsettias fashioned into miniature kissing balls and metallic gift boxes wrapped in green and gold — are perfectly priced at $2 each. At Bed Bath & Beyond, you’ll find the traditional look in an old-fashioned St. Nick, $6.99, that you can hang
on a sturdy tree or sit on a small table. Target harks back to the days of blown-glass ornaments with its “Sentimental Memories Collection” of snowmen, stuffed stockings and Santas in hand-painted looks, $2.99-$5.99. Begin at the base and work up, using 100 lights for every vertical foot of tree. Be daring and mix and match lights for a explosion of sparkle. Go with garland. Start wrapping garland at the top, adding more as you work toward the bottom. Beaded garland looks best draped from branch to branch; tinsel garland looks best loosely wrapped. Finish with ornaments. Hang your largest and most important ornaments first, making sure thmy are secure on branches. A variety of shapes add interest. Tukk some ornaments closer to the trunk to add depth. Tips for staying safe through the holiday season (ARA) - Even if you’re not driving through a blizzard, the effects of winter weather pose a mobility challenge for everyone, whether it’s the possibility of slipping on the sidewalk or delayed flights due to icy runways. Cold temperatures only add to the frustration of winter travel. It’s little wonder that some people forgo the fun of holiday gatherings to stay home. For seniors, in particular, the ice and snow of winter is more than a discomfort - it’s a hazard. It’s so easy to slip and fall that many choose to stay inside, rather than take the risk of an injury from falling. Going outside to simply get the mail can seem like a chance they don’t want to take. The best way to face down winter and all its challenges is to think ahead and be prepared. A few simple solutions will make winter much safer - and more enjoyable - for you and any guests you might invite
over. • Get the right gear - Clothing has to go to the next level in winter and serve a real purpose. Not only do you need added warmth, you have to have traction gear for ice and material that will keep out the dampness of snow, sleet and rain. Clothing technology has come a long way in helping us deal with winter. New, lighterweight fabrics fend off sub-zero cold and all kinds of precipitation without adding bulk, which is great for everyone, but particularly for professionals who need to maintain dress standards at work. Most shoes just aren’t able to stand up to the conditions of winter, and become hazardous when the world is glazed with ice. Whether you’re driving long distances to visit the family or just heading to work, it’s a good idea to keep an up-to-date emergency kit in the vehicle in case you become stranded. Include good jumper cables - if the ones you have are getting worn, spring for a new pair because if you get caught in the cold with a dead car, they will be your ticket home. Also include blankets, a flashlight, flares, a first aid kit, a small shovel, a window scraper and a bag of something that will help you gain traction, like kitty litter, sand or salt. Extra hats and gloves can be handy, too, as can small, nonperishable snacks like energy bars or granola bars. • Pay attention to
your property - It’s important to keep a close eye on your gutters, steps and sidewalks, even when you’re not in the middle of a snow or ice storm. Make sure that icicles aren’t forming, or if they have, knock them down (carefully) to avoid damage to your home and to prevent them from falling on anyone. If ice forms on your walkways, keep ice melt, sand or salt near the door so you can easily distribute it and prevent slips and falls. When the snow starts to fall, be sure to shovel regularly. If you’re a city dweller, your neighbors will thank you. If you’re not, you’re taking steps to protect yourself and any visiting guests.
