(MCT) The mission: Buy the worst tree on the lot and give it a makeover. The tree: The Douglas fir was found at a large home store lot. It was short and as skinny as Kate Moss, with broken limbs, a top branch that veered off at a crazy angle and a hole right in the middle. It was by far the worst of the lot, and still Lowe’s wanted full price, $19.97.

The makeover plan: Keep it inexpensive. Make it look as sophisticated as possible and hide the figure flaws. In order to do this, fashion tricks would be employed. For height: The tree was taken out of the tree stand, which was big and clunky, and placed in a pedestal urn. This gave the tree some desperately needed height and elegance. Using an urn or a small table to elevate a small

Gift-wrapping the green way By Kim Yeager Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

(MCT) Try recycling some of these old standbys rather than reaching for a new roll of gift wrap. You use your creativity when you choose a gift, so why not extend the fun to the wrapping job? OLD MAP OF MINNESOTA Purchased for pennies at a rummage sale, this map had color to spare. We used sections of its border to create contrasting bands, a good spot to record the “to” and “from” info. Three headbands form colorcoordinated “ribbons,” a bonus gift for the recipient. SHEET MUSIC A stack of old music books, purchased at an occasional sale for $4.50, will wrap more than a tree’s worth of presents. The ribbon holds tiny ornaments, a gift in themselves. WALL POSTER

This old poster, printed with large flowers on each side, made for an exuberantly colorful wrap. We made a tag from a gerbera daisy cut from one end of the poster and pasted to a wide band of striped ribbon. BOOK JACKET The book jacket from an oversized coffeetable book of botanical drawings made a lush covering. We cut another drawing from the flyleaf of the cover and pasted it on cardboard for a spot to label the gift. BROWN PAPER BAG A paper grocery bag makes a great, natural background for a handful of backyard twigs nestled on a bed of chartreuse reindeer moss. FABRIC SCRAP Here’s our take on furoshiki, a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth. We used the 5inch-deep bottom of an Ikea panel sheer. The

scrap, not quite 15 inches wide, was knotted in the middle, with each side wrapped and twisted to form a fabric rose. The ends are tucked in, no glue needed; a bit of pink grosgrain ribbon forms a floral center. WALLPAPER SAMPLE Wallpaper left from your home improvement project makes a great wrap. Tape together pages with the same pattern in different colors for larger pieces. Looking for discontinued sample books? Most SherwinWilliams stores provide them on request at no charge; just check for availability.

NEWSPAPER Not just for fish anymore. We enlivened a black-and-white page with greetings cut from magazines attached to two wide bands of hot pink grosgrain ribbon and a band of pickstitched black-andwhite ribbon through the middle. Fix it: Try airing out items with mothball odor By Karen Youso Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

(MCT) Q: I was given some Christmas ornaments, tablecloth and napkins that had been in storage. They reek of mothballs. How can I get rid of the odor? A: It takes time, but air will do it for you. Mothballs change from a solid to a gas. (It’s the gas that makes them an effective insect repellent.) The fastest way to get rid of mothball odor is

to expose items to fresh air and sunshine. That can be hard to do now at this latitude. Meanwhile, you can try washing the linens, wiping off the ornaments and placing them in an unused room or basement to let the odor dissipate. You may have to wait until next Christmas to use them. ——— Q: My husband insists on unplugging our laptop and letting the battery die, then plugging it in and

recharging it. He argues that it charges better by doing this. He also does this with other rechargeable equipment. I insist that it doesn’t matter and could wear the battery down. Can you settle this argument and enlighten us on the right way to recharge batteries in laptops, cell phones, etc.? A: He may be right. Check the laptop manual for directions on recharging the battery. The type of battery can

The nickel cadmium battery (NiCd) is older technology, and it needs to be fully discharged before recharging to avoid the “memory effect.” Memory effect is when the battery, upon charging from less than the fully discharged starting point, remembers the limited cycle and results in reduced capacity. The lithium ion (Lion) battery is newer technology and does

not suffer from the memory effect. Lithium batteries might be affected, however, by extended time on a charger once they are charged. Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, which have a slight memory effect, should be fully discharged prior to charging about once every 20 charges. In any case, it’s not going to hurt the battery if you let the charge drop down as far as the unit will allow (typically

that’s not to zero but around 15 percent power), and then recharge it. (MCT) This could be the Christmas you go mad. We’re talking “Mad Men,” the AMC series set in the advertising business that exposes the underside of the American dream in the early 1960s. And oh, does it ooze style. There’s the suave and complex Don

Draper, impeccable in well-cut suits and Brylcreemed hair. There’s the sleek headquarters of Sterling Cooper, the Madison Avenue advertising firm where Draper built his career. There’s the Manhattan night life beckoning us from our middleAmerican lives. Sure, there’s also sexism, infidelity, greed and ambition run amok.

But wouldn’t you just love a little of that glamour? And why not? The holidays are a time for pulling out the stops, so it’s a perfect opportunity for adding a dash of early-’60s flair to your celebration. First, let’s set ourselves in a “Mad Men” mode. In the Kennedy era, much of America clung to the traditional decorating style of wall-hung eagles and wing-back sofas — the style embodied in the Draper home. But the forward thinkers were embracing the clean-lined International Modern style, the style of the Ster-

So were solid-color textiles, tight cushions on upholstered furniture and jolts of color such as bright turquoise and intense orange, said Pamela Evens, interim associate dean of Kent State University’s College of Architecture and Interior Design and a fan of both “Mad Men” and midcentury design. Sofas were long, draperies extended from ceiling to floor and lamps were tall to highlight the ubiquitous picture window, Evans said. It was a futuristic time, when space flights captivated the country, technology was streaking ahead and the avant-garde wanted to leave old ways behind. Even TV shows of the time, from “The Jetsons” to “Star Trek,” captured America’s fascination with tomorrow, noted Virginia Gunn, professor of clothing, textiles and interiors at the University of Akron. That midcentury aesthetic is embodied in Joe Valenti’s 1954 ranch-style home on

Cleveland’s far West Side. For Valenti, that style is a natural: He owns Flower Child, a retro-hip store in the city that specializes in items from the 1930s to the 1970s. This time of year, vintage Christmas decorations have Valenti’s house even more seriously steeped in a “Mad Men” vibe. So we turned to him for suggestions on bringing a little Mad-ness home for the holidays: ——— PUT ON THE GLITZ Perhaps no holiday decoration symbolizes the way the ’60s turned tradition on its ear like a tinsel tree. Leave it bare to reflect the light of a rotating color wheel, as Valenti does, or dress it in simple ball ornaments, all in the same color. Put away the light strings, though. Metal and electricity don’t mix, which is why the color wheel came about. Want a look that’s more elegant than kitschy? Opt for a fake flocked tree, decorated in ornaments in elongated cigar shapes and nontraditional colors. Or take a more tra-

ditional approach: Decorate a real tree with the ornaments from World War II and the ’50s, the kind that might have been handed down to a young couple like the Drapers. Transparent glass ornaments with painted stripes or tinsel inserts, silvered Shiny Brite ornaments with reflective indentations, bubble lights and baubles with spinning metal fins would all have been found on trees at the time. ——— TOAST THE HOLIDAYS Entertaining at home was the rule in the ’60s, Valenti said, and a party was a reason to dress up. Often the aim was to impress the boss. No early-’60s party would be complete without cocktails. Highballs, Manhattans, Old-Fashioneds, vodka Collinses — all would have been within the drink-mixing capabilities of any respectable host of the time. You don’t need to serve alcohol to dip into that cocktail culture. Mocktails look extra sophisticated served in stemmed martini glasses or (con’t. on page 16)
