Fix it: Open those drapes to cut condensation By Karen Youso Star Tribune (Minneapolis)
(MCT) Q: Regarding condensation on windows, is it better to have your drapes or shades open or closed? What should be done in the winter? A: Keep the curtains or shades open so that air circulates and warms the glass, even at night. Cold glass means more condensation. But glass is only half of the equation. High indoor humidity means more condensation. So tackle the other side of the problem: • Operate the
kitchen exhaust fan every time you cook. Make sure the fan actually blows to the outdoors and doesn’t just recirculate. Look in the cabinet above the fan. If you see ductwork, then the fan exhausts to the outdoors. If not, you have a recirculating fan, which does not eliminate moisture. In that case, you’ll want to crack the window when cooking. (Some homes have downdraft exhaust fans with the vent housing under the cooktop.) • Operate bathroom exhaust fans while bathing or showering and for 15 minutes after-
ward. You can increase ventilation in the home (bringing more fresh air into the home) by operating the kitchen or bathroom fan for some time every day, beyond when you’re bathing and cooking. Cold winter air is dry, so this fresh air will lower the humidity in your home. Less humidity means less condensation. • Do not vent the clothes dryer to the indoors. • Use a hygrometer (available at hardware and home stores). The colder it is outdoors, the lower the humidity level should be indoors if you
want to prevent condensation. Many homes in winter can’t handle humidity levels above 50 percent. But if the humidity is too low, it can lead to dry skin, bloody noses and shrinkage in wood floors and chairs. A compromise is best, and the windows can be a guide: If you have a little ribbon of condensation around the bottom of the windows, no problem. If you have to mop it up, it’s too much. (MCT) Containers are the answer for the vegetable gardener short on space or sunlight, or one caught in a tug of war with hungry critters. “You can grow everything but corn in a container,” said Kerry Michaels, who writes about container gardening online at About.com. Michaels has grown
tomato plants in recyclable grocery bags and old laundry baskets and lettuces in yard-sale colanders. But she says the introduction of self-watering containers has made all the difference. These containers have a reservoir at the base and the soil wicks the water — and fertilizers — up to the roots in a slow, deliberate fashion, eliminating the drought-wet cycles that can stress any
plant and cause disease. “Self-watering changed my life,” said Michaels. That’s because a consistent source of moisture might be the toughest part of container gardening. A downpour can flood your container, and pots can dry out quickly on a hot summer day. Michaels doesn’t have many of those warm days where she lives in Maine. But

Make feathered friends with a backyard bird feeder By Sarah Bryan Miller St. Louis Post-Dispatch
(MCT) It started innocently enough. One day last fall in the gift shop at the Missouri Botanical Garden, I spotted a hanging bird feeder and thought it would be nice to add to my backyard. That impulse purchase has turned into ... not an obsession, exactly, but certainly an enjoyable focus of my daily life. The lone feeder has been supplemented by three more. My old copy of Peterson’s “A Field Guide to the Birds East of the Rockies” now lives on a shelf near the kitchen window, and I find myself contemplating the merits of competing brands of suet block with the same kind of concern I expended in shopping for a new HVAC system. I bought a double “shepherd’s hook,” a long, thin pole with two curving arms from which to hang feeders. I got another, larger hanging feeder, a bag of nyjer seed (to attract finches) and its specialized feeder, and a bag of black oil sunflower seed, and set them up just outside a big bay window. The first bird to find us was a bold little chickadee, followed closely by a curious tufted titmouse. Before long, the
regulars included sooty juncos, pert wrens, tiny goldfinches in their winter olive drab, redstreaked house finches and enough cardinals to populate the infield, outfield and most of the bench. Adding a suet cage drew nuthatches and little downy woodpeckers, clinging at all angles to the wires, along with a stair-stepping series of bigger ones, from middle-sized hairy (looking like the downies’ older siblings) and red-bellied woodpeckers, up to a flicker, looking enormous next to the smaller birds. The setup also drew an enormous hawk, which swooped down on an unwary sparrow and then coldly sized me up through the window before flapping off to a nearby branch to eat its lunch. (”Well, it IS a bird feeder,” wrote one of my Facebook friends.) My 16-year-old daughter has taken charge of refills; our avian visitors provide a good starting point for conversations, and we recognize our regulars as they come zinging in. I’ve found helpful advice everywhere from neighbors to a clerk at my local Home Depot to employees of a tree service. Our three indoor cats find them even
more fascinating than we do, but sometimes seem to make a point of posing proprietarily on the bird book, tails swishing. The mix of seeds and hanging feeders seem to draw only “good” birds, who knock enough food to

I find a deep but uncomplicated pleasure in feeding songbirds, and in helping a little bit of beauty to flourish close to home.
Ken and Joyce Barry of West County chose their villa in part because of the location: It backs onto a wooded strip that’s a haven for birds. Love Park is just beyond that, and a steady stream of birds — from goldfinches to a great horned owl, from chickadees to a wild turkey — are on regular view. The Barrys are serious longtime birdwatchers. They’ve got two feeders off the corner of the deck and maintain two more down the hill, close to the woods, and they replaced one wall of their deck with a railing for a better view. They’re regular shoppers at the Wild Bird Marketplace in the Lafayette Center shopping center in Ballwin, Mo.; Ken estimates that they spend $50 on feed each month in winter. Ken, 62, caught the bug from his mother, Thelma Barry, now 92, a hard-core birder; he passed it along to his wife, Joyce, 61. Their sons aren’t that interested, but their grandchildren, 2 and 5, are keen: “They have their own binoculars,” says Joyce. “They’re fascinated with feeding birds.” Like most people who feed birds, the Barrys work at outwitting squirrels. Ken found a tub
feeder with a cage that birds can get past but the squirrels can’t. To keep raccoons out of the food supply, Ken keeps the seeds in an ancient aluminum trash can, given to him by his mother, with a tight-fitting lid. “The birds are fun to watch,” he says. “They all have their own personalities.” Birdwatching, says Joyce, “is contagious. All of it is fun when you can sit back and relax in a comfortable chair, have a glass of wine, and see all of this wildlife right in front of you.” The Missouri Botanical Garden is filled with trees, flowers, and other attractive plants. No wonder birds love it as much as people. “We encourage people to be good observers of nature,” says Jessica Koster of the staff, “and this is a way to help them do that.” Birdwatching “is the No. 1 outdoor activity that people do, nationwide,” says Louise Bradshaw, director of education at the St. Louis Zoo. It includes everyone from casual backyard birdwatchers to those who travel to exotic places just to fill out their lists of birds spotted. Bradshaw notes, “One of the things about really liking birds is that you (con’t. on page 10)

There could be a leak bringing moisture behind the walls, and only now are you seeing evidence of it. Simply covering the problem with a moldinhibiting paint, no matter how good that paint is, will not solve it in the long term. I realize that getting rid of mold is very

has unveiled its home improvement trends for 2010. As expected, today’s projects fall into the must-do rather than want-to-do category. Speaking at the International Builders Show in January, Eliot Nusbaum, executive editor for home design, said “the focus is now on lowcost improvements that will pack a big punch.” With only 16 percent of 2,300 magazine readers surveyed saying “now is the right time to spend” on home improvements, more than half are focusing their efforts on needed repairs and mainte-
nance, Nusbaum said. Three-quarters say the economy has had an effect on their home improvement plans, with about half of those surveyed having changed their plans during the last year. Smaller projects prove to be the most popular, such as painting a room (54 percent); replacing or adding flooring or carpeting (38 percent), decorating or redecorating a room (35 percent), and landscaping the yard (30 percent). Energy efficiency is also a focus of home projects, Nusbaum said. Those who responded to the survey favored installation
of Energy Star windows and doors (34 percent), high-efficiency heating and cooling systems (31 percent), and Energy Star appliances (31 percent). ——— No soap. The Soap and Detergent Association will become the American Cleaning Institute in June, coinciding with a major redesign and launch of its Web site, www.cleaning101.com. ——— Decluttering. From ShopSmart’s March issue, here’s a tip about desks for those who “derive a sense of serenity from a clean, spare work surface”: Limit the color palette. Keep desk
accessories within a limited color range to maintain calm. Separate your stuff. Use drawer organizers or modular drawer inserts for supplies and papers. She liked my choices — black oil sunflower seed (”That’s the best all around, the most nutritious”), nyjer seed and suet. After the feeder, says Bradshaw, you need “a really great field guide. Peterson’s guides and Golden guides are good starters.” She suggests guides from the Audubon Society and National Geographic as the next step up, “and from there you can start spending lots of money, and have shelves and shelves” of specialized books.
If you get into it, consider having a water source: a bird bath, or ideally, “some sort of water seep,” says Bradshaw. “Dripping water is very attractive to birds, to drink and bathe. All sorts of migratory warblers will stop by in spring and fall, get a bath, and check out the bushes for insects.” The next step, “as your yard evolves and you evolve in feeding the birds,” Bradshaw says, is to consider your landscaping. “It’s really kind of fun to see what vines or different flowering plants will draw birds.” When plantshopping, “I always look
at the label, to see if it will attract butterflies or hummingbirds. . . . I’ll usually opt for the wildlife attractor.” BIRDING RESOURCES The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has a terrific Web site. They do a “Great FeederWatch” every winter — and check out their killer birding app for iPhone. They also publish helpful books, like “The Bird Watching Answer Book,” by the Lab’s science editor Laura Erickson; it’s a pocket-sized volume with a tough binding and a great deal of useful information.
