Fix it: Need a new appliance? Get ready to jump for cash By Karen Youso Star Tribune (Minneapolis)
(MCT) If you’d like to unload the noisy old refrigerator, or the washer that doesn’t clean so well anymore; if the dishwasher and freezer are old and older — it’s time to go shopping. States and the federal government are going to make it worth your while, in the appliance version of Cash for Clunkers. The Residential Energy Property Credit allows taxpayers who buy energy-efficient goods for their home to pay fewer taxes this year and next. Install a qualifying energy-efficient improvement in your home — insulation, windows, heating
system, for example — and 30 percent of its cost (up to $1,500 for the two years) can be knocked off your federal tax liability. Complete “Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits,” and file it with your federal tax return. (Form is at www.IRS.gov,or call 1800-829-3676 to order.) While you maneuver through these programs, keep in mind that there might be additional rebates coming to you from utilities. (A roundup is at www.dsireusa.org, or contact your local utility.) In addition, many manufacturers and retailers likely will offer additional incentives to capture customers, so keep your eyes peeled. Finally, don’t forget
the reason for all this fuss and bother — energy savings. Switching out an old appliance, an energy hog, with a new, high-efficiency one will save energy — and that means money — every time it operates. That might not make the appliance free as it arrives at your home, but over time, it will. The appliance can pay for itself in savings, and with the lowered initial
price due to incentives and rebates, that will happen sooner. Your place: Some cracking is normal in redone stucco work By Al Heavens The Philadelphia Inquirer
(MCT) Q: Two years ago, we moved to a 5-year-old townhouse. Last year, the builder initiated a project of inspecting all the stucco exteriors for moisture penetration into the exterior sheathing and studs underneath. Many inspected units, including ours, were found to have damage attributed to improper application of the tarpaper wrap layer under the wire and stucco layers. The builder corrected the situation by removing all the stucco, wire, and paper; repairing any sheathing and stud damage; and then re-stuccoing. Several owners began noticing hairline cracks in the new stucco, generally starting near a window or door and arraying vertically and horizontally from the door opening. Is some cracking normal? Is there a standard for normal cracking versus excessive? A: Tom Kraeutler, host of the Money Pit radio show, says: “It sounds as if your builder did a commendable job identifying and fixing this problem. Tearing out the old stucco and rebuilding the walls was a huge undertaking.
“As for the cracks emanating from windows and doors, this is not unusual when you realize that walls are always moving. Expansion and contraction from moisture and temperature swings, as well as settlement of your fairly new building, will lead to the type of cracks you describe. “Areas around window and door openings tend to move more than larger sections without openings, and is therefore the reason cracks form here first. As long as the cracks remain hairline, I would not be concerned. Where feasible, you might want to caulk them to keep water out — silicone caulk is best.” (Money Pit is heard Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. on WDEL (1150 AM) in Wilmington.) ——— Let there be light. CSA International, a testing and certification organization, offers advice on what to look for when purchasing compact fluorescent bulbs. Choose the bulb that best suits the fixture. Spiral-type bulbs may be used in almost every fixture. CFLs with globes are available in various sizes and shapes. They look similar to traditional incandescent bulbs and may look better in (con’t. on page 8)
fixtures with exposed bulbs. Determine how much light is needed. Check your fixture to ensure the light is the proper size and wattage. Light output is described as “brightness” and is measured in lumens. For example, an incandescent 40-watt bulb puts out 450 lumens, but it takes only a 9- to 13-watt
CFL to do the same thing, CSA says. Dispose of CFLs properly. Never place a CFL directly into the trash. CFLs contain a trace amount of mercury. Some retailers provide CFL recycling drop-off. You also may contact your local waste-management agency for disposal or recycling options.

Despite recession, many still choose to spend one-third of their lives lying in luxury By Debbie Arrington McClatchy Newspapers
(MCT) Nothing says “I love you” like a good night’s sleep, especially in luxury. “Mattress shopping is ... all about comfort,” says Earl Kluft, a third-generation mattress maker and president of Aireloom Co. Italian mattress maker Magniflex decorates its Love Collection with oversize kisses and heart designs. Removable and washable, the plush cover is made to be seen (who needs sheets?), but these luxury mattresses also boast body-contouring memory foam and even adjust to body temperature. Organic Mattresses Inc. founder Walt Bader’s all-American organic mattresses — the wool is from Sonoma sheep — have made his Yuba City, Calif., company a go-to source for the ultimate in feel-good sleep. (OMI mattresses reportedly grace some White House bedrooms.) As with other home goods, eco-friendly features have boosted mattress brands such as OMI, which has seen business double in the past three years. Its pure natural latex layers reportedly help with muscle recovery, a selling point for older week-
end warriors. Well-off shoppers can find mattresses sewn with silver, gold or platinum thread (to discourage germs), covered with silk or cashmere. Fibers are infused with scent, so a gentle roll will release waves of lavender, chamomile or other therapeutic fragrances. Such ultra-luxurious mattresses cost more than many cars. “We make custom models that cost $24,000 to $75,000 for a queen size, and we sell quite a few,” says Magniflex’s Andrea Mugnai. “They look really expensive; they’re very niche-y, very edgy. But you’d be surprised. We sell a lot of them in the U.S., particularly to professional basketball players.” Adds Aireloom’s Kluft, “We’re introducing a $44,000 model at Bloomingdale’s because the $33,000 (mattress) we brought out last year wasn’t enough. People wanted something even more luxurious.” Trying to bounce back
from its worst sales slump in 40 years, the mattress industry is using luxury as a lure. Though high-end mattresses costing over $2,000 still account for less than 10 percent of total sales, this segment keeps growing. Demand for eco-friendly products has joined with a desire for pampering. Makers have also begun targeting men with extras such as beds made with pop-up flatscreen TVs, built-in safes and champagne buckets. Magniflex markets its Tonino Lamborghini model (with logos from the famed carmaker) as man-cave material. But the high-end excess has more affordable layers underneath. “We’re experiencing two levels of luxury shopping,” Mugnai says. “Yes, we have mattresses sewn with 22-karat white gold, but we also have queens starting at $1,000 that feature all the same quality and ’green’ certification. That’s a big plus for consumers.”
