(MCT) Third-graders nationwide can participate in Bonnie Plants 10th cabbage program and win $1,000 scholarships given to each state winner. Last year, 1.5 million kids participated, according to the company. The program is
free. Bonnie Plants delivers 2-inch cabbage plants to every registered participating school. Teachers distribute the plants with growing instructions and kids take them home to grow. At the end of the growing season, teachers pick a class winner based on size, appearance and maturity; that submission is entered in

(MCT) Q: I have two expensive crystal wine glasses with small chips in the base of the stem. My neighbor told me she thought there were places you could take them to have the chip filed down, or perhaps this could even be done yourself with a file of some sort. Do you know if this is possible? A: Yes, it’s possible to repair chips on crystal
stemware. Check yellowpage directories under “China” and “Crystal Repair,” or ask a china and crystal dealer or a department store’s china and crystal department. I don’t think this is a do-it-yourself job, because a special abrasive wheel is used to grind the chipped area. This leaves a gray finish that is then removed when the area is polished with a cork or felt wheel wetted with a polishing agent.
It’s important to note that there is a risk to the process, especially in cases where the chip is in the rim. About 5 percent of the glasses break. Share some of your secrets. A: You have to be willing to look, to dig through, to go down the darkest alley to find the brightest jewel. You need to learn the places to go to find the good stuff. In New York I’d come out of all the theaters, and when they strike a set you can pull some good wood and make something out of it. Q: What’s your best found treasure? A: I found a good oak library chair in 1979 that we still have today. Actually, we have found three others. They are slightly different, but for the most part they’re all white oak, done well. Q: What are some of your other notable items? A: Here’s the thing about being notable, what makes something notable?
We can walk into someone’s house and they have a beautiful poster of a Van Gogh, let’s pick “Starry Night.” We’ve all seen it, and here it is in this lovely couple’s house. Or you can walk into someone’s house anywhere and maybe they’ve had their child do their own version of that. Manipulate that with the computer and then we can put it up on our wall. No one else in the world has that. That’s an original that your child did. That makes it notable. Q: So you have a lot of original art? A: We have over 200 framed pieces of artwork up on the wall, and all of them come from friends and children. My dad does watercolors, so we have a few of his up. we tell stories. Our memories are there. I can shut my eyes and tell you the scars that are in the dining room table that we had when I was growing up. I can put my hand down and feel the groove in the piece of wood that was right in front of me, where I sat from the time I was 2 until I was 18 and left the house. Q: What’s your best personal home renovation? A: We were renting a loft out in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, long before it was in vogue, would have been 1987. We lived on
the second floor and the first floor extended longer than ours so we had a rooftop we could walk out on — and when you did, the J Train passed right over us. In three days we built a deck for a party we threw. Kelly made masks for everyone and we built this wonderful 400square-foot-deck. Q: What three things should no home be without? Your place: Bugged by fine sawdust in an antique cabinet By Al Heavens The Philadelphia Inquirer
(MCT) Q: We have an antique wooden cabinet we have owned for more than 30 years. Recently, some fine sawdust has appeared on the inside of the piece. Cleaning it out and spraying a general insecticide did not work. The sawdust has returned. Is this something for an exterminator? The piece is not of great monetary value, but obviously we would both like to keep it in good condition. And do we have to worry about this spreading to our hardwood floors or other wooden pieces? A: If you haven’t seen live insects, it is difficult to determine what, if anything, might be creating the sawdust. We had kitchen cabinets dating from about 1910. The drawers were so old that the act of pulling them out and pushing them in created sawdust, which then fell into pots and pans stored on shelves below. So the age of the antique might be a factor. Still, it could be a wood-boring insect, as a Web site I found — www.powderpostbeetles.com — talked about powderpost beetle infestation in oak flooring and an armoire. The Web site explains that these tiny pests bore into wood at some point and lay their eggs — something akin to what carpenter bees do out-of-doors, but the holes aren’t as large and obvious. When the eggs hatch, the little ones bore their way out of the wood and leave sawdust as evidence of their presence. The Web site has an extensive section on beetle treatment:
go.philly.com/beetle. Eradicating the pests, if that is the problem, could be costly, and might affect the quality of the piece, or its structural integrity. If the antique has sentimental value, perhaps having a furniture refinisher or an antique dealer in to look at it would be well worth the cost. ——— More on garage doors. Responding to a recent column, reader Art Mackin said that several years ago, while he was rehabbing his daughter’s new house, he encountered the garage door opener problem I wrote about (see go.philly.com/garage). “I was very familiar with the laser alignment requirement to get the door to work properly. I made sure the transmitter and receiver were properly aligned, but the door still acted as if there was an obstruction preventing it from closing with the remote control. “It took me several days to figure out what was causing this and to solve the problem. The interference was caused by sunlight shining on the receiver. “I made a baffle out of cardboard and mounted it on the receiver end and blocked the sunlight from entering the lens. The door opened and closed properly using all the remote devices. A simple test to determine if sunlight is causing the problem would be to test the door at night using the remote control. If it works OK in the dark, then installing a baffle on the receiver end to block the sunlight should solve the problem. “Since the sun shifts during the year and depending on the time
of day you use the remote, this can appear as an intermittent problem and be difficult to diagnose.” James Jetter of North Liberty, Iowa, chronicles a similar problem, but offers a different solution: “Bright sunlight just after sunup (low angle) may cause a glare condition that prevents a sensor that looks east from reliably distinguishing the beam sent from the sensor on the east side. “I have overcome this condition by standing at the east side of the garage door, blocking the sunlight. Although still an annoyance, it avoids the need to close the door from inside and exit through another door.” More on laminate refinishing: Susana Ash said she refinished hers with Hammerite Rust Cap in the bronze hammered finish (see go.philly.com/laminate). “It produces a very interesting metallic textured surface, with metallic chips settling along the bottom and a resin topcoat rising to the surface. “I did scuff and apply an enamel primer first, although they say it is self priming. The only thing I would do differently would have been to apply a series of thin coats versus the thicker ones I did — the curing took much too long, but that was my fault to rush the process.” Each can costs $20, Ash said. ——— (Questions? Taxpayers seeking homebuyer tax credits, refunds must file paper By Broderick Perkins RealtyTimes.com
Homeowners filing for the home buyer tax credit are not allowed to use electronic filing and must file hard copies due to special documentation requirements. Earlier this year, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) deployed new home buyer tax credit forms and instructions requiring forms that will force taxpayers to file on paper, rather than electronically. The new home buyer tax credit filing rules are to ward off a repeat of 90,000 taxpayers who
fraudulently claimed the credit, according to the U.S. Treasury. Under the new and expanded home buyer tax credit rule , the credit is worth up to $8,000 for first-time home buyers and up to $6,500 for qualifying existing home buyers, in both cases, who buy a primary residence or have one built. The tax credit is refundable. A credit that is larger than the taxes owed is returned to the taxpayer in the form of a refund. The home can cost no more than $800,000 and qualifying income is limited to a maximum of
$125,000 for single taxpayers and $225,000 for joint taxpayers. Get the full scoop online from the IRS' "First-Time Homebuyer Credit" page online. All taxpayers (first time and move up buyers) seeking a credit or refund, must use the new IRS Form 5405 "FirstTime Homebuyer Credit and Repayment of the Credit" (Taxpayers must pay back the credit if they sell the home within three years). The instructions, which teach taxpayers what documents are required, are available on IRS FORM i5405.
In addition to Form 5405, also include at least one of the following documents: • A copy of the HUD1, Settlement Statement, showing all parties' names and signatures, property address, sales price, and date of purchase. • For mobile home buyers who don't get a settlement statement, a copy of the executed retail sales contract showing all parties' names and signatures, property address, purchase price and date of purchase. • For new home buyers who don't get a set-
tlement statement, a copy of the certificate of occupancy showing the owner’s name, property address and date of the certificate. Existing home owners applying for the $6,500 maximum tax credit must additionally prove they lived in their old home for the required period. To do so, options are: • File IRS Form 1098, "Mortgage Interest Statement." IRS Form i1098 offers the instructions. • Also, supply mortgage interest statements or property tax records or homeowner's insurance records.
Again, because some of the documents required are not standard tax forms, taxpayers seeking the credit cannot file electronically. They can, however, use off-the-shelf tax software or the IRS Free File online software to prepare returns, but they must still print out the return and mail it in with the required documents. In addition to accuracy and compliance, the only other way to speed up any refund is to request, with the return, that the home buyer tax credit refund be deposited directly into a bank account.

As far as colors choices go, Spreng recommends a deep red or gray-blue, but your color choice should depend on what the rest of the room you're working on looks like. One surefire way to pick a pleasing color is to choose one from a painting you have hanging elsewhere in the room and use that to paint the accent wall. "It doesn't have to be a dramatic choice," Spreng says. "Just taking one wall
and making it a few shades darker will have a strong effect." Spreng also warns homeowners not to forget to paint the ceiling. A great way to add warmth to a room is to dilute the wall color down to around 15 to 20 percent of its strength and use that to paint the ceiling. "It will include your ceiling in your design and make the room feel a little bit more connected," she said. After you have your color squared away, Spreng recommends playing with the layout of your furniture. "If you're bored with your home, move your furniture around,"
Spreng says. "Your layout doesn't have to be just square. If have a square table, turn it 45 degrees and it can give the room a whole new feel. Or turn a square seating area diagonally. The bottom line is that your furniture layout doesn't have to be at right angles." Spreng thinks that a square layout is common because people naturally gravitate towards symmetry. But balance, not symmetry, is the ideal homeowners should be striving toward with their layout, Spreng says. The key to balance is to make sure all of your large pieces (or for that matter, visually strik-
ing pieces) are not grouped together. "Balance is when you walk into a room and your eyes aren't just drawn to one thing; you want to inspire movement throughout the room and not to feel static," she says. "Rooms that are square can have a sort of static feeling." Make the color and layout changes that Spreng recommends and you'll be well on your way to a more satisfying interior design.
