It's time to climb out from under that mess! Yes, there's no hiding from; it's time for Spring cleaning. And there has never been a better time. some soapy water. Rinse with a simple garden hose. If you don't have outdoor space to work in, you can always just give those screens a good old fashioned bath in your tub. For sellers looking to add even more light, consider changing out your curtains during showings, using simple sheers instead of heavy drapes. Inside your home, a great way to lighten up
and vacuuming may not be enough. There are steam cleaners for purchase at most home stores, or industrial ones for rent. Steam cleaners can deep clean away allergens and improve the appearance of your carpet. Or contact your local professional. Ask, though, if your carpet cleaning professional has green cleaning options you can choose from.

The following Five Smart Shopping Tips should help you ace your next major purchase for your home. Our example is windows, but apply the ideas presented here to whatever you're shopping for. These suggestions frame issues to reveal the types of questions to ask and ask in our "buyer beware" marketplace until answers make a lot of sense. Tip #1. No short cuts or you'll be shortchanged As we've observed before, most real estate owners spend more time researching the purchase of a big-screen TV or cell phone than they do replacements for major systems in their home. Instead of looking for a quick way to buy the right product or jumping at the word "discount," start by clarifying exactly how much is being replaced and why. This reveals what can be gained at each major price point and where disappointments lie. For instance, for windows there are three basic degrees of change, with costs and complexity increasing as you go down the list: Replacement Windows are pre-fabricated
windows, frame and all, which are popped into existing window frames. The double frame is then capped for aesthetics. The interior wall and trim remain untouched. Adding significant insulation is usually not possible. "Quick and easy" is how installers describe it. "Brick to brick" refers to removing the existing frame and glass to expose the opening in the exterior brick wall of a home. A pre-fabricated window is then fit into the opening. This renovation requires removal and replacement of the interior trim, and may damage surrounding interior walls. Window coverings may need adjustment or replacement. "Whatever you want" says the contractor and begins cutting the brick on one or more sides of an existing window opening or creating a new hole to accommodate a new and larger window. Corresponding interior wall and trim is removed, too. Then, a pre-fabricated window is fit into the new opening. Repair to the inner wall, new finishing and new window coverings are required. Tip #2. Don't just budget for the major purchase, budget for full
completion of the entire project. With our window example, that would mean including the cost of interior wall repair, trim replacement and window coverings to determine the exact investment of time and money for the project. Tip #3. Clarify your goals or you'll end up with what the supplier wants to sell, or what the contractor knows how to build. When I opted to replace original 20th-Century wood windows, my prime goal was having as much light as the budget allowed. Damage to the interior was a low priority. Yet, most window installers stressed replacement windows which would pop in with no interior damage—which also netted them the most money. I wanted brick-to-brick to compensate for the wider frame of modern windows and I persisted until I found that skilled, knowledgeable professional installer. Tip #4. The whole must be greater than the sum of the parts. Consider your home as a whole even when you tackle replacement of one element. If windows were the last thing on your update list, did you research market choices when you did the roof and
other elements to be sure of the necessary material and colour match? Window installers push the glaring white frame because this is cheaper and easier for them. Search out manufacturers that have a wider range of standard colours than blinding white, yellow beige, khaki and easy-fade brown. "Custom colours" may be advertised, but that represents a whole new challenge and expense. An expert installer can help you with a cost-effective project that blends with your exterior decor to add value to your real estate as a whole. Tip #5. Consider the source and buyer be FIRST TIME, AND REPEAT HOMEBUYERS TAX CREDITS EXPIRE 04-30-10. ACT NOW!

Reality: Sun is an issue for most south windows, but it is westfacing windows, particularly floor-to-ceiling versions common in condominiums, where sun can present the greatest challenge:

Black-out drapes or wooden shades may block UV and light, but they intensify heat released when sun rays strike the window covering. Solar or perforated blinds reduce this effect. They are made from mesh fabrics which allow UV to "breath through the roller shade," controlling heat and glare. Myth #2: Looks are all that matter with solar blinds. Reality: Differences in fabric and manufacturing quality impact on functionality, so it's not just about finding the least expensive. For instance, search out fabrics labelled with clear specifications, like 10% openness which screens about 90% of UV, according to Stemerman. Myth #3: Motorization always works. Reality: Motorizing blind movement should not pose problems, but ensure parts and servicing are readily available and reliable. Think ahead and ensure the motorizing system can be integrated into a home automation system.UV to "breath through the roller shade," controlling heat and glare.

Practical meets pretty: Container gardening for beauty and bounty (ARA) - Container gardening is a great alternative for people who don’t have the time or space for a full garden or flowerbed. Often, however, container gardeners may feel they have to choose between beauty and practicality. When you can only plant so many containers, what do you fill them with flowers or veggies? “Both,” says container gardening guru Pamela Crawford, author of “Easy Container Combos: Vegetables and Flowers.” “It’s possible to artfully combine flowers and vegetables in single, stunning, beautiful containers,” she says. “Practical and pretty can go side-by-side on your patio, deck, balcony, or even interspersed in your landscape.” Author of nine gardening books, Crawford was a seasoned floral container gardener when she decided to tackle the task of figuring out a way to make vegetables look pretty in containers. “Did I ever get a surprise when the first 100 or so vegetable combos looked just awful,” she says. By the end of the growing season, she had planted 1,768 vegetables, all transplants from Bonnie Plants, and arrived at some insight into how you can make a container garden both beautiful
and bountiful. Here are her top container garden tips: 1. Less is more - Keep it simple “My first container attempts included mixing too many different vegetables in the same container. The results looked like a mishmash,” she says. Instead, think simple, like one tall vegetable in the center surrounded by a few flowers. Upright tomatoes with begonias and coleus planted along the edge are quite attractive. Or, plant one tall herb, like rosemary, and surround it with a shorter vegetable, like lettuce. 2. Use pretty pots and hardware Even tomatoes look good in attractive pots, supported by nice obelisks or attractive trellises. Try planting one crooked-neck squash in the middle of a large, ceramic pot. Or plant a tomato in a Talavera (bright-colored geometric design) pot with an iron obelisk to support it. 3. Pick your pot pleasure Almost anything can serve as a container for your garden - flower pots, pails, buckets, wire baskets, bushel baskets, washtubs, window planters, even large food cans. Larger veggies, like tomatoes and egg-
plants, will need a larger container, at least 5 gallons for each plant. “Use the largest containers you can afford, and that you have space for, especially with warm season vegetables,” Crawford advises. “The plants will look better and last longer because the roots will have more room to grow.” 4. Don’t forget drainage and do consider color Whatever type container you choose, remember proper drainage is vital. Your container should have holes at the base or in the bottom to permit drainage of excess water. Color is also a consideration. Dark colored containers will absorb heat that could possibly damage the plant roots. If you must use dark colored pots, try painting them a lighter color or shading the container. 5. Flowers look fabulous combined with vegetables Interesting looking plants like squash, okra or crooked neck squash can stand alone in a pot. But others, like eggplant and spinach, look much better accented with flowers. Beans, lettuce, peppers and spinach are among the easiest veggies to start with in a container. Veggies that require little space, like carrots and radishes, or
that bear over a long period of time, like tomatoes, are also great for container gardening. Steer clear of artichokes, asparagus, corn, pumpkins and potatoes, which don’t look good, are too big for a pot or require you to dismantle the whole container garden in order to harvest them. Flowers that pair well with vegetables in containers include dragon wing or wax begonias, coleus, fountain grass, lantana, lavender, pansies and purple-heart tradescantia. 6. Stabilize with centerpieces surrounded by
smaller plants Floral container gardens usually look best with a large plant in the center and smaller plants around it. The same holds true for combo containers that mix flowers and veggies. The large plant is called the centerpiece. Great vegetable centerpieces include peppers, tomatoes and eggplants. Collard greens, cabbage, kale and mustard greens make good-looking coldseason centerpieces. 7. Don’t break the bank Warm-season vegetables do much better in large containers with at
least a 16-inch diameter. Since attractive, large containers can be expensive, look for less expensive alternatives if you don’t want to break the bank. Since many warmseason vegetables fall over without support, try wooden trellises painted in contrasting bright colors to help support the plants. “I used to avoid placing vegetables in planting containers because I thought they were unattractive, but now I know better,” Crawford says. “Now I will always have vegetables tucked in amongst my flowers.” Courtesy of ARAcontent
