tomatoes this year. Yes, tomatoes. The disease, called late blight or Phytophthora (Latin for “plant destroyer”) -infestans, usually doesn’t show

until later in the growing season. But it’s been causing problems in the eastern United States this summer and has shown up in several places as far west as

Kentucky. It likes cool, wet weather, said Kenny Seebold, an extension plant pathologist with the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture. The first reports in Kentucky, from backyard gardeners, started coming in right after the Fourth of July. The first case from a commercial grower came in Monday, Seebold said. It involved a farmer near Morehead who was growing a half-acre of tomatoes and lost about

90 percent. “It was pretty severe, so we’re worried it’s taking hold,” Seebold said. The leaves of infected tomato plants wither and die quickly, he said. Most diseases start at the bottom of a plant, but late blight can attack the entire plant or start at the top. Look for nickel-size olive green or brown spots on leaves and slightly fuzzy white fungal growth on the underside. Lesions appear on stems. Firm, brown spots develop on tomato

fruit. Farmers and gardeners are advised to inspect tomato and potato plants for signs of trouble. Seebold suggests preventative applications of chlorothalonil or mancozeb. Because the disease is rare here, most suppliers don’t carry the chemicals necessary to treat a plant that already is infected. Growers who suspect that the blight is already present should take samples of the plants to their local extension office so UK plant pathologists can diagnose them. (MCT) Q: How can I determine how much of the $1,500 stimulus rebate I would receive if I replaced the windows in my home? A: Section 1121 of the stimulus package allows for a federal energy tax credit to homeowners, up to 30 percent of the cost of window and door replacement — a maximum of $1,500 for taxable years 2009 and 2010. The tax credit is for the price of the product only and does not include the

cost of installation. To qualify, windows and doors must have a 0.30 U-factor and 0.30 or better solar heat-gain coefficient. A few more words of explanation, courtesy of the folks who know at the U.S. Department of Energy: The U-factor is the rate at which a window, door, or skylight conducts nonsolar heat flow — typically expressed in units of British Thermal Units per hour minus feet squared minus temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. For windows, sky-

But the National Fenestration Rating Council’s U-factor ratings represent the entire product’s performance, including frame and spacer material. either transmitted directly and/or absorbed, and subsequently released as heat inside a home. The lower the coefficient, the less solar heat the door, window, or skylight transmits and the greater its shading ability. A product with a high coefficient is more effective at collecting solar heat gain during the winter. A product with a low rating is more effective at reducing cooling loads during the summer by blocking heat gained from the sun.
