Fixit: Flu-free keyboards and furniture bubbles By Karen Youso Star Tribune (Minneapolis)

(MCT) Q: A recent article about H1N1 recommended cleaning keyboards to reduce transmission of the virus. What should I use to clean them? A: Surface cleaners for office equipment are available at retail stores and online. You can also use alcohol wipes or cotton balls and Q-tips with alcohol.

Before cleaning computers and other electronics, check the owner’s manual for cleaning instructions and information. Generally, do not spray anything directly at or into the keyboard. Turn off the computer and disconnect the keyboard, if possible. If you use alcohol, do not use so much liquid that it runs onto and into computer nooks and crevices. (Caution: Do not use alcohol or

household cleaners on the screen, as they can damage it.) Meanwhile, don’t forget to sanitize the: • Mouse: Turn off the computer. If necessary, disconnect the mouse and clean with alcohol. • Remote controls: Alcohol wipes and Qtips also can be used for cleaning them. • Shared telephone. Unplug the phone and wipe the handset and number keys, being

careful not to let excess liquid get into holes and crevices. Be sure to change pads or cotton balls frequently. ——— POP FURNITURE BUBBLE Q: My mother’s buffet has several small bubbles in the veneer. Can anything be done? The dining room set is from the 1950s, and not worth the trouble of a professional fix. A: Because the spots are small, try cutting

and regluing: • Using a razor, slit the area enough so that you can apply some carpenter’s glue under the raised veneer. Use a toothpick to insert the glue if the nozzle nose on the glue bottle doesn’t fit. • Press the area lightly with your fingers to distribute the glue. (The “bubble” might break, but it won’t matter in the end.) • Cover the area with wax or parchment paper and lay a flat,

heavy object on the area for 24 hours or at least overnight. • Lift and lightly sand any uneven areas. (MCT) A couple of weeks ago, I tried to answer a question from a reader about removing yellow stains on wallpaper that she attributed to gas from her heating system. I asked for your advice for a problem that I frankly had never heard of. Here are some of your answers: When I prepped my home for sale, my kitchen had about 20 years of grease and grime that had to be cleaned. I wound up using Spot Shot to clean my entire

kitchen. While this is a stain remover for rugs, it has a degreaser in it and it removed all that yellow gunk that accumulates in the kitchen. I used it on walls (including wallpaper), cabinets, the stove, countertops and canisters. This stuff cut through all the grease. I actually could see the wallpaper “change color” as I proceeded around the room. My real estate agent now recommends it to her clients, after seeing how it worked on my kitchen. I just sprayed it on a sponge and followed up with wiping it down with a paper towel. I still

being newer, would not match the rest of the house. When I touch up paint on my cedar clapboards, I use a foam brush and just a bit of paint and sort of wash it into the surface. I’m helped by the fact that I always keep about a half-gallon of the paint I’d originally used in a tightly sealed plastic container, and that, and the technique, tend to solve shading differences. Experiment with lighter and darker shades of the garage door paint, using a board or piece of metal for the test strips and then holding them to the surface to see if they match. You probably won’t get an exact match, but time and weather compensate for even the biggest differences in a very short time. ——— Q: We have a 1948 house with pink tile in the bathroom that we have wanted to do something about for years, but we have been receiving conflicting advice. Some say painting the tiles will not last long and will start flaking off quickly. Is there a product that has proven to permanently adhere to tile in a high-moisture environment? We are told the pink tiles are set in a concrete

base and will be a major job costing many thousands ($12,000 to $15,000) to remove and replace. The tiles are on the floor (small squares) and the walls throughout the room up to 50 inches from the floor including a full backdrop to the tub. The bathroom is on the second floor with wet-plaster ceilings below, which might not take the removal process well. A. I’ve seen lots of efforts on the cheapdesign shows such as TV’s “Trading Spaces” to change tile color with paint. Since the shows never return to the scene of their crimes, I have no idea how long the paint lasts. I would assume moisture would be an issue, even if you used a paint designed for areas where the humidity can be high. In addition, if the tiles are glossy, they need to be deglossed or scuffed up to get the paint to adhere to the surface. Floor tiles would be more difficult to keep painted than the ones on the wall because you walk on them. I’ve seen tile after it has been painted, and it looks painted. You might be able to tile over the pink, if the floor is level and can support the weight. I understand that has a greater success rate than painting tiles. (c) 2009, The Philadelphia Inquirer. QUALITIES OF COTTAGE DECOR A common thread among the styles associated with romantic decor (shabby chic, cottage, Victorian and French country) is a light, feminine touch. That’s often reflected by the use of pink in accessories, accents and fabrics, according to cottagehomedecorating.com. Also characteristic of the look is a floral motif pulling pieces together. Popular choices are fabriccovered boxes with lace trim, ribbons and pearl beads; wroughtiron furniture painted white and purposely distressed; and decoupage lamp bases. ROMANCE IS ALL IN THE LIGHTING — OR IS IT? Dim the lights and viola! The ambience suddenly feels more romantic. Though, if you really want to set the mood, selecting the right lighting fixture would help (and so would a good attitude).
