installing an attic radiant barrier, planting some new trees to provide shade, and other things you do would fit in better with a limited budget than would new windows, major home renovations, and expensive new appliances. Now keep in mind that both of these questions are only looking at the

improvements from an economic standpoint. When you factor in the many non-tangible improvements energyefficiency strategies can bring to your home — better indoor air quality, less outdoor noise, enhanced comfort, etc. then any of these improvements could make sense right now. When you caulk and weatherstrip and tighten up a house, you’ll be keeping out bugs, pollen and other out-

door pollutants, and keeping your heated or cooled air indoors where you want it. Energy efficiency is as much about improving indoor comfort as it is about saving money, so don’t overlook the non-economic reasons for fixing up your home. Finally, when you consider the various things that can be done, separate them out into those you can do yourself and those that need a profes-

sional contractor. I often use installing insulation as an example here. I don’t think it is terribly difficult for someone with reasonable fix-it skills to go up to their attic and spray or roll out insulation materials. On the other hand, there are some serious safety issues here that maybe a professional could handle better than the average homeowner. Stepping in the right places in the attic to keep from

falling into the living space can be trickier than it might seem. Taking care not to breathe the insulation fibers, working in some fairly confined spaces, and other considerations may make this a job you’d rather see a pro do. I hear from many readers who ask for directions on how to clean the ducts in their home. They feel that the indoor air isn’t as clean as they’d like it to be and they would like to make sure this dirt and dust isn’t coming from the ducts. The problem is that

(MCT) I insulated the crawl space under the newer part of my kitchen a couple of years back, and it seems to me to have made a bit of difference in temperature control in both summer and winter. I’m sure the spiders and crickets that live there would readily agree. To others in the house, however, there is minimal difference in the winter — perhaps a degree or two — but summer, with the shades closed during the heat of the day, is more noticeably comfortable. I do get a lot of

It’s tough to keep a ventilated space warm in winter. Conversely, if humid air is vented into a crawl space in warm weather, dehumidification is nigh impossible. If the space is unventilated: Seal and insulate the foundation walls, not the subfloor.

Reasons? Less insulation is required — government experts say about 400 square feet for a 1,000-square-foot space with three-foot walls. In addition, pipes and ducts are within the conditioned portion, so they don’t require insulation for energy efficiency or protection against freezing. And air sealing between the house and the crawl space is less critical. Reasons not to insulate: Insulation damage by creatures and

built airtight, and the air barrier must be maintained. What’s an air barrier? House wrap or parts of the structure such as drywall and sheathing. Barriers halt random air movement through building cavities, reducing leakage that can raise heating and cooling costs almost one-third. Insulating walls: Eliminate or seal the foundation vents. Seal all air leaks through the exterior wall. Install rigid foam board or batt insulation — exterior foam, interior foam, or interior batt — to achieve complete insulation coverage. Insulate the band joist with batt insulation, as well as the crawl-space access if it is in the wall. Install a continuous termite shield between the band joist and masonry foundation wall that covers the wall insulation and extends completely outside. Under-floor insulation: Seal all air leaks. Batts with an attached vapor barrier are typically used to insulate framed floors. Obtain insulation with the proper width for the joist spacing of the floor being insulated. Complete coverage is

essential. Insulate the band joist area between the air ducts and the floor as space permits. The orientation of the vapor barrier depends on the home’s location or climate. In most of the country, the vapor barrier should face up. Insulate all ductwork and all hot and cold water lines, unless they lie within the insulation. Close vents after making sure space and materials are dry. Insulating ventilated space: Seal all holes in the floor above. Insulate between the floor joists with rolled fiberglass. Install it tight against the subfloor. Cover the insulation with a house wrap or face it with a vapor barrier, which should face up. Install a polyethylene vapor retarder, or equivalent material, over the dirt floor. Tape all seams carefully. Before you do anything: A qualified home-energy auditor will include an insulation check as a routine part of a whole-house audit. Last week customers at The Forest Group in Norman were treated to grilled burgers and spicy wings cooked outside and homemade cookies baked inside. More than 650 hungry Forest customers filled their plates and sat down to eat inside the hardware store. Over in The Kitchen Showroom, cookies disappeared as soon as they came out of the oven. The annual “Customer Appreciation Day” is Forest’s way of thanking their loyal customers and enticing new customers to get better acquainted with the company. Forest’s new kitchen showroom showcases several lines of custom manufactured cabinetry. The fully decorated kitchen vignettes spark new ideas for both remodel and new home construction. Experienced designers help with the selection process and make design recommendations. At an event earlier in the week, Chef Andrew Black, Executive Chef at The Skirvin Hotel, created and served a seven course gourmet meal in the showroom using The Kitchen Showroom’s fully functional kitchen. Guests were treated to dinner and three different desserts provided by La Baguette and prepared by owner Rudy Khouri. The working kitchen is the perfect place to showcase new cabinetry, plumbing fixtures and appliances.
