Members of the International Code Council's Residential Building Code Committee (RBCC) have made it clear that fire sprinklers are destined to become a standard feature in all new homes. The fire sprinkler requirement was added to the International Residential Code (IRC) last
year, and it is scheduled to become effective January 1, 2011, in states that adopt the latest version of this code. Currently, 48 states use the IRC as a basis of regulating residential construction, although some states lag behind in adopting updates. At a hearing held earlier this week, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) had petitioned

"People who buy new homes that comply with the IRC fire sprinkler and smoke alarm requirements can sleep peacefully knowing that their families and their homes are protected from fire," said Meri-K Appy, president of the non-profit Home Safety Council. While fire sprinklers provide a level of comfort, further prevention is sometimes necessary. Take for example the recent announcement from the Communications Cable and Connectivity Association, Inc. (CCCA) that
warns of an increased risk of fire from offshore-manufactured communications cable products which fail to meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) minimum requirements for fire safety. It's a problem, the CCCA says, that continues to plague the industry and marketplace. "As we witnessed last year, the failing products were made with inferior materials and designs to save on production costs and they predictably failed the minimum fire safety requirements," said CCCA Executive Direc-

(MCT) Black walls aren’t just for Goth kids and heavy metal fans anymore. They’re popping up in upscale shelter magazines, hipster design blogs and just about everywhere in between. Witness the black dining room at the Benjamin Moore paints Web site, where “Black Satin” is one of the featured “Colors for Your Home, 2009.” “It’s funny how these things get in the air, isn’t it?” says Stephen Drucker, editor-in-chief of House Beautiful, which recently showcased black rooms from the home of designer Windsor Smith. “It took us very much by surprise, but we did suddenly start to see a lot of it.” Explanations range from the economic (dark colors reflect the recession) to the aesthetic, with Apartmenttherapy.com founder Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan saying that people are tired of Scandinavian minimalism and are seeking bolder, darker, more traditional interiors. And then there’s that brown wall thing. Dark brown walls have enjoyed a niche appeal for about four years, but
with that color now going mainstream (check out the Pottery Barn catalog), designers are on the prowl for a new dark and daring option. Or, as GillinghamRyan puts it, “Black is the new brown.” Drucker recently answered our pressing questions about black walls, chief among them: Should we ever, ever attempt this at home? Q: Black walls? Are you sure this is a good idea for grown-ups? A: Excuse me, (what about the) little black dress? What color is more associated with being chic and sophisticated and modern than black? Q: Who should consider black walls? A: Someone who sees them and falls in love with them. Black is not for the faint of heart. But it’s more versatile than you might think it is. It could be really great in any kind of library or game room or man-cave kind of situation. Let’s say you had a bathroom with a lot of white tile, or maybe a little black-and-white tile, and only a little wall space. It could be really beautiful there. Q: Can you use black in small spaces? A: Sure, dark colors are the best colors to use in small spaces. Dark col-
ors make the corners disappear. Use dark colors in a small room and you’ll never think of it as small again. Q: I would have thought the opposite. A: It is totally counterintuitive. But when you paint a small room a dark color, the corners disappear. You lose all sense of how big it is. Q: What’s the safest way to try black? A: If you’re not a professional designer, the safest thing is in a room with a lot of white trim. If you use pale blue upholstery or, depending on your taste, pink or stripes, it could be really, really chic. Black is for confident people, there’s no question about it — it takes a certain confidence to pull it off. But everybody loves people with that kind of confidence. We’ve got a few pointers for you: If your walls aren’t smooth, be prepared to patch and sand, or just avoid glossy black, says Maxwell GillinghamRyan of apartmenttherapy.com. A matte or satin finish will hide imperfections. Keep it crisp with clean, white trim. And
make sure those whites are spotless. To get the richness that you want from black walls, use a really good dark-tone primer or be prepared to use several coats of paint. Want the style without the full commitment? Consider painting a hallway black, says Gillingham-Ryan. Add a little something shiny to the room to bounce light around and give a nod to fashion. "The CCCA has taken the position that this serious problem will not go away until quality assurance procedures include testing of samples of finished cable procured directly from the marketplace. Our association is cooperating with the major independent telecommunications industry testing agencies to establish a stronger approach to assure compliance to safety standards," Peri added. "We are very encouraged that a major independent testing agency has informed our association that it plans to put in place new quality assurance measures which include testing of finished product procured directly from the marketplace."

Don’t just turn off electronic equipment like computer monitors, cell phone chargers or microwave ovens when you’re not using them — unplug them since they still use energy even when they’re not in use. Look for the ENERGY STAR label to assure you’re getting the most energy-efficient appliances and other products, and read the yellow EnergyGuide stickers to compare the energy use of different appliances. Do your own energy audit or hire a profes-
sional to identify areas of your home that need to be fixed or upgraded to stop wasting energy. Use water flow restrictors on sinks and a low-flow showerhead to cut down on water bills, and have new 1.6 gallons-per-flush toilets installed. Regulate your drapes and blinds to block the hot summer sun and to allow the winter sun to get in to provide warmth. Install operable shades in skylight wells to control light and glare just as you control window light. Consider installing a solar water heater or even a solar electric system to reduce energy costs and take advantage of federal, state and utility rebate programs that can drastically cut your costs. Finally, lower your water heater thermostat to around 122 degrees F — most come from the factory set at 140, far too hot for normal use and far too energy wasteful. 11. While there are dozens of other things I wish I had room to talk about — it took me 24 years so far and I still haven’t said it all — the best way to end is to mention the simplest. First, caulk any holes or cracks in your home’s foundation or walls and weatherstrip around doors and windows, and you’ll notice an immediate improvement in comfort and energy savings. It’s a low-cost, easy-to-do strategy that pays back big dividends for very little effort. I read somewhere that if you added up all the holes in a home’s walls and foundation, it would equal the size of a basketball. Then do some of the simple things like dusting light bulbs occasionally (dirt can cut down their light output
by as much as 10 percent) and cleaning the coil behind your refrigerator at least annually to keep the unit operating efficiently. It’s the little simple things that can add up to big energy savings. I appreciate the nice emails so many of you have sent over the years, and I’ve learned a lot from some of the not-so-nice ones when you’ve taught me things I didn’t know before. I want to leave you with one final thought: just because gas prices have been dropping lately, the need to save energy in your home isn’t over. I’ve seen this cycle repeatedly over the years. People get concerned when they pay a lot at the pump so they think this is the time to be saving energy at home. When gas prices come down, the “crisis” appears over so they’re not as interested in home energy savings. The bottom line is that there’s really no correlation between the two, and making your home more energy-efficient will save money and increase comfort longterm, regardless of gas prices. Now, please stop emailing me. I’ve got a couple of thousand people waiting for long overdue responses, so let me use all the extra time I’ll have now to reply to them.
