(ARA) - We turn to technology to make many aspects of our lives easier - from traveling with a GPS to staying connected with loved ones via social networking Web sites. It’s no surprise, then, that our kitchens, the most-used room in the home, are becoming increasingly high tech. A study commissioned by a leading kitchen appliance manufacturer showed that a third of respondents spend three to four hours in the kitchen each day, and 20 percent spend five or more hours. The survey also showed that Americans are embracing technologies in this room, with nearly half of the respondents reporting they want a state-of-theart kitchen. Responding to the
demand for technology, manufacturers are offering new gadgets and products designed to make kitchen tasks easier, faster and more energy-efficient: • Touchscreen technology centers stationed in the kitchen allow users to access stored or online recipes and cooking tips. • Energy-efficient pots shorten cooking time and reduce energy usage by as much as 50 percent. •Water-powered garbage disposal units
are operated by the water pressure in the kitchen and require zero electricity. • Automated pantry systems catalog contents and keep track of what ingredients are running low or need to be replenished. “The kitchen is the hub of the home, where we spend significant chunks of time preparing meals and participating in a host of other activities,” says Bob Rodenbeck, senior research and development direc-

Roofs now can take on an artistic look (ARA) - Some things get better with age wine, cheese, cars. Building supplies don’t usually fall into that category. So, if your house is looking a little shabby, try giving it a facelift by updating one of the largest exterior surfaces - your roof. Just like faces, roofs can look worse for wear after years of exposure to the elements, so give it a makeover by focusing on one or all of the following - texture, shape and color. “This isn’t your grandmother’s roofing anymore,” says Stephen McNally, vice president of sales and marketing at TAMKO Building Products, Inc., one of the largest shingle manufacturers in the United States “People are getting creative with their roofing. It’s not just utilitarian anymore. People are seeing it as a palette - one of the first things visitors notice about the house.” Texture One of the biggest ways to change the texture of your roof is by using an alternative shingle material. Asphalt shingles are still the most popular roofing material in the U.S., but laminate, composite and metal shin-
gles enjoy a growing following as the alternative materials can dramatically change the appearance of a house. A growing trend in roofing currently is the proliferation of metal shingles. The shingles are known for their appearance, durability and ability to reduce energy consumption by reflecting the sun’s rays rather than absorbing them. These shingles come in a variety of styles to look like wood shakes, stone slate or clay tile. Depending on the style, a new metal roof can make a house look traditional or contemporary with a distinctive finish. Slate stone and real wood offer an organic
quality to a roof that homeowners have been shelling out big bucks for. But now, that look is available to the general public at a fraction of the cost through composite shingles. Call it a discounted facelift. For example, TAMKO’s Lamarite brand composite shingles cost about onethird what slate tiles do. The composite shingles are made from colorized mineral filled polymer and are molded to mimic the texture of stone slate tiles. They are also designed with markings to allow different exposures which result in an attractively random, staggered pattern on the roof. Even asphalt shin-
gles have come a long way from your grandmother’s roof. New laminated asphalt shingles come in a variety of shapes and colors, many simulating a wooden shake look. The shape of a sheet of shingles can mean the difference between graceful shadow lines on your home or an unsightly zipper pattern common with some styles of roofing. Some laminated asphalt shingle styles create a vintage look through randomly cut patterns on each sheet or an extended length sheet and wider cut tab like TAMKO’s Heritage Vintage and Heritage XL laminated shingles. The result is a sleek look that still feels cozy and warm.
Color While black is the traditional color of asphalt shingles, roofing has branched out and is a lot more colorful these days. TAMKO offers dozens of different colors in several shingle varieties, including Harvest Gold, Forest Green and Olde English Pewter. Metal roof colors tend to be more dramatic than asphalt shingles with such shades as sequoia red and Vermont blue. Not only are many of these metal roofs made in “cool” colors to reduce energy use, but the MetalWorks line of shingles is made from 50 per-
cent recycled steel and are 100 percent recyclable. Some homeowners pair a new roof color with siding or shutters to create a continuous color pallet. Others choose to go in a different direction and pick a contrasting color to set the roof apart. Into muted colors? Just as a light beige paint can add warmth to a once-all-white room, changing your roof from the traditional black to another neutral, such as a series of brown or gray shades can add character to one of the largest surfaces of your home. Expert tips for creating a beautiful landscape (ARA) - It may be cold outside, but homeowners are already dreaming of creating beautiful garden settings around their homes come spring. Landscaping success doesn’t have to be hit or miss, and if it has been for you, it may be time to call in a professional landscape designer. Why? Because in the long run, hiring a landscape designer can cost less than doing it yourself. You’ll get a “doable” design created right the first time, saving you the cost of repeated tries at getting it right or planting the wrong plants in the wrong spots. A professional landscape designer envisions creative solutions to the most difficult outdoor challenges - problems they’ve more than likely solved before. Plus, a high-quality landscape increases home sale prices up to 10.8 percent, compared to a home with a simply average landscape, according to the Journal of Environmental Horticulture. Here are some tips from professional landscape designers to create your dream garden. First, consider your space and any “issues” that it has. Hiding an unsightly air conditioning unit, adding privacy and changing boring
views to beautiful ones are issues that landscape designers face with many clients. “As a certified landscape designer through the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, I see the big picture,” says Bostonbased landscape designer Maria von Brincken, APLD. “A designer sees the problems that you see, and often the ones you don’t, and can offer solutions to create beautiful, functional and earthy-friendly landscapes to add to your lives.” Next, do your homework. Tear out favorite pictures from gardening magazines, and start making a file on what you would like for your dream garden. While not
everything might be possible for your garden, it will give your landscape designer a visual starting point. Don’t forget about hardscape such as patios, decks and fencing; designers can help with these also. Take your time.
Brincken warns of the temptation to impulsively buy plants at a garden center and attempt a garden make-over. This can be a costly gamble for those without experience. Many homeowners find that it takes the help of a designer to cre-
ate a well-planned landscape project that includes both plants and hardscape. While there is a cost to hiring a landscape designer, it is ultimately more economical to work with an expert to create a plan specific to your yard. The project is completed in a timely manner and within budget when you take your time and create a landscape plan. Expect to spend about 10 percent of the total cost of the project on the design. Consider what you want to achieve with your landscape. “People are busy, and they want to have an outdoor space that makes them feel comfortable, not frustrated and worn out from gardening chores,” says Judy Nauseef, APLD, of Iowa City, Iowa, and president of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (www.apld.org). “They also want to maximize their investment in their home,” she adds. ‘Having a welldesigned landscape gives the homeowner more living space and also helps with resale value.” Research and reach out to a few landscape designers. Be sure to interview several designers to find one who meets your needs and personality. Review the
portfolio or Web site of each designer, and visit some of their work if possible. Finally, if you have a budget in mind, share this with the designer up front. Get ready to get dirty. “You can hire a landscape designer for a range of services. You might choose to hire a designer for a two hour consultation for ideas and suggestions that you might implement yourself,” says Patricia St. John, APLD, of Berkeley, Calif., and APLD incoming president. “You could also hire a designer to give you a complete design for your garden. When it comes to implementing the design you have choices — involve the designer while you hire a recommended landscape contractor or even do some of the work yourself.” Also, you do not have to complete the whole plan at once. A landscape can be installed over a period of time as well. Homeowners can decide what areas are most important and start there. Take the first step to a dream garden. Debunking common floor care misconceptions (ARA) - Whether it’s the dog tracking in mud or the kids carrying in dirt and leaves, there are many ways floors can become dirty and unattractive. Unfortunately, for many people the process they use to clean their wood flooring might be doing more harm than good. “There are a lot of misconceptions about floor care that lead to premature deterioration,” says Tom Sullivan, founder of Lumber Liquidators, the largest retailer of specialty hardwood flooring. Some cleaning techniques to avoid, because they can damage hardwood flooring, are: • Vacuuming. Contrary to the belief that vacuuming is the best way to rid wood flooring of dust and debris, it’s actually harmful. The hard bristles on the rotating brush can scratch the wood, and small amounts of damage to the wood over time will make the surface look worn and uneven. • Damp mopping. Many people think that damp mopping is a quick way to clean wood flooring, but the water in the mop causes deterioration of both the wood and the floor’s finish. This increases the
likelihood that the wood will warp or squeak in the future. • Cleaning with vinegar and water. While many people clean wood flooring with a homemade mixture of vinegar and water, the acidic nature of the solution actually eats away at the wood finish. Corrosion of the wood finish detracts from its healthy appearance and increases vulnerability, making the wood more prone to wear and tear. • Applying oil soaps. Although oil soaps are a typical way to clean wood flooring, these soaps and detergents can leave a harmful film. Eventually, this film causes the wood finish to yellow, “alligator” or crack, requiring refinishing. Instead of using one of the above methods to clean hardwood floors, it is recommended that homeowners follow a few simple cleaning guidelines. • Lightly sweep wood flooring with a soft-bristled broom twice a week. This is a quick and easy way to clear away debris particles so that they do not build up. • Clean wood flooring once a week with a terry-cloth mop and a cleaner specifically made for wood flooring,
like Bellawood’s soybased hardwood floor cleaner. This will get rid of the heavier dirt buildup that can cause a dull appearance. “Soy-based products clean and shine hardwood flooring without being harsh on the finish and without producing harsh fumes that can irritate your family and pets,” says Sullivan. “It doesn’t take a lot of effort to give your floors the maintenance they deserve, and in doing so you’ll not only improve the look of your home, but extend the lifespan of the flooring.” Courtesy of ARAcontent
