energy. Some of these are big things, for example. If your home has duct leaks and you figure that it’s no big deal since the ducts are in the attic and you don’t feel any discomfort so you don’t fix them, then you’re going to wipe out any potential savings from the many other things you do to save energy. Or you have a new house built and you see how much lower the price is when you put in the cheapest windows, so you go with them. Others are little things — leaving fans turned on when you leave a room, keeping
all your electronics plugged in while you’re all on vacation, or leaving the computer monitor on all night even though it’s not being used. All of these things can add up — some quickly, some over time — and you’re going to negate the potential savings of the good things you’ve done to lower your energy use. Lighting might be the best way to show how dramatic this can be. Even though the cost of energy-saving compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs has dropped dramatically in recent years (I’ve seen ENERGY STAR-rated bulbs for sale in stores for less than $2, for example), I still hear from people all
the time who can’t see how paying more than 29 cents for an incandescent bulb makes economic sense. When you figure that the compact fluorescent uses only one-fourth of the energy of the incandescent to provide the same amount of light, and that the average home in America has 30 to 40 light bulbs in it, you realize that the potential energy savings can be huge and quickly repay the higher purchase price of the CFLs. So just because you have a high- efficiency furnace and good attic insulation, it doesn’t mean that you can keep the lights on all the time and the fans running and unused

Home improvement Q&A: How to rebalance a door that closes on its own By Al Heavens The Philadelphia Inquirer
(MCT) Q: The door of our bedroom closes on its own. How do we fix it so that it stays open without using a doorstop? A: Your house has settled, so the door is no longer hanging level in its frame — that’s why the door closes by itself. Carpenters I’ve talked with over the years recommend
that something be wedged between the lower hinge and the frame of door. This will compensate for the settling and help level the door. There are two ways to do this without removing the door. One is to loosen the screws holding the bottom hinge to the door frame just enough to slide a cardboard shim underneath the hinge. (Any flexible piece of card-
board will be sufficient.) Tighten the screws. If there is some, but not enough, improvement, loosen the screws again and fold the cardboard to increase the thickness of the shim. You can fine-tune the shim until the door stays open. The second technique requires that you remove the door pin from the bottom hinge. Then bend the
pin slightly by striking its head gently with a hammer on a hard surface such as concrete. Then tap the pin back into the hinge. The bent pin supposedly creates enough resistance to keep the door from closing by itself. ——— Q: My mother is having carpeting installed in her upstairs hallway. Perhaps ringed nails would accomplish permanence. ——— Q: I have a leak originating in my bathroom. The plumber wants to replace the lead drains at a cost of $2,800. The drain taps coming from the vanity and tub do require replacement. To do this, a part of the bathroom floor needs to be ripped out. The floor, sadly, is mosaic tile that may not be easy to replace. What’s the best way to remove these tiles? Do you know what kind of drain taps I would need if I tried this myself? A: I’d get a couple of additional estimates, because $2,800 sounds steep. I don’t know what’s involved in the work, though; you need to ask for a breakdown of the estimate before hiring someone. When you review the estimates, make sure that the work to be done is exactly the same on each. Don’t do it yourself. This job is best left to plumbers, since you could make the problem worse. You are right. Rescuing the mosaic tiles won’t be easy. Is it basketweave common to turn-of-the20th-century baths, rather than mosaic? Even if you
had patience and proper tools, the tiles are probably embedded in concrete, and you would need to chip that off the bottom of the tile. I’m speaking from experience here. Don’t even try to do it. Is there any way a plumber could reach the drains through the ceiling below the bathroom? If not try the Internet to see if someone is still manufac turing or has access to pro fessionally salvaged tiles that match yours or come close. ——— Q: I am trying to remove plaster to expose a brick wall. Is there a special kind of tool I should be using? A: Unfortunately, there’s just no easy way to get the job done. A hammer and cold chisel are what I have used for such a task. I wore gloves, a mask, and safety glasses during the work The wall beneath ended up not being worth the trou ble. There could be asbestos in the plaster if the build ing predates 1980. (MCT) Q. What is the proper way to clean factorymade composite wood decking that has become dirty, scuffed and stained from heavy use? — B. Carlton A. Composite decks, made from ground-up wood and recycled plastic, generally require less maintenance than allwood decks, but periodic cleaning is usually necessary to preserve the appearance. Composites also have a number of advantages over wood — they won’t rot, split or splinter, for example. But stains, mildew and dirt are common problems. Before cleaning, try and repair the scuffed areas by brushing briskly with a wire brush (preferably with brass bristles), brushing the boards lengthwise. Highquality cleaners will remove many stains, especially mildew, but it is a good idea to preclean difficult stains such as grease (use a degreaser, sold at supermarkets) and rust (use an oxalicacid cleaner such as Zud). Some experts recommend oxygen-bleach deck cleaners such as Wolman DeckBrite for composites, but special
cleaners are available and I suggest using one of these. Examples are Flood’s Composite Deck Cleaner and Corte-Clean. You can get more information about these cleaners by typing the name into an Internet search engine. Follow directions for the specific cleaner, of course. Some deck-cleaning pros use pressure washing to clean composite decks. This should be done with moderate pressure — 1,500 to 2,000 psi. High pressures could damage the material. Special sealers, to help prevent future staining and water damage, are also available for composites. One is Superdeck Composite DeckCleaner, Check the Internet for details. ——— Q. There are filters in my two central air-conditioning units, and also filters at the return-air registers in the living area. I am wondering if this is helping or hurting. Can you comment? —Mike A. Filters are sometimes used on return-air registers as well as the central units, and the main question is whether too much filtering impedes the flow of air back to your central units.
