Sure, they might still be working OK, but systems that are 15 or more years old are probably very energy inefficient, and replacing them could pay for the cost of new systems over time with the energy savings. Finally, if you can

A final simple test is to look at the light bulbs in your home (many homes have 25 to 30 or even more light bulbs!). Are they clean or are they covered with dust? Are they incandescents or compact fluorescents (CFLs)? Do you use the highest setting on a

Once you’ve completed this little audit, figure out which problems you could fix yourself, and use caulk, weatherstripping or other materials to do the simple repairs. ed insulation. Replace incandescent bulbs with CFLs. Do some research into newer heating and cooling systems. Finally, and very importantly, do some thinking about how you and your family are using all those energy-consuming products and features in your home. Simply turning out unused lights and unneeded fans, setting your thermostat

The fireplace tends to be forgotten when record high temperatures are hitting many parts of the country. But, regardless of the season, buyers often find fireplaces alluring. However, if your fireplace has lost some of its appeal due to an outdated look, it might be time for a makeover. Creating a unique look for your fireplace can make it very enticing to buyers. Fireplaces can be eyesores or focal points in a room. So, take a look at your fireplace and decide if it will spark buyers' interest. "If anything is out, it is brick. Nobody is really doing brick anymore. It's mostly concrete or stone," says Rick Gardella, President of Concepts in Concrete Construction. Style. Of course, every home décor style is subjective. As the times change the mass appeal of certain materials fluctuates. Gardella says concrete is now being used for many areas in the house from indoor flooring to concrete fireplace surrounds. If you're thinking of giving your fireplace a facelift, Gardella says be sure
to consider these tips. Consider the bigger picture. Your fireplace should complement the rest of your home. Be sure to consider not just what type of material you will use to cover the fireplace but also what types of décor will be sitting on the mantel or near the fireplace. Take a look at the rest of the room and see what statement you want to make with the fireplace. For instance, a stone surround that extends up the fireplace and the entire wall to the ceiling can create a bold and rustic look. Two-sided fireplaces. A look that's popular and provides double the enjoyment is a two-sided fireplace. It's not always practical or possible but if it can be done this feature creates appeal and warmth in multiple rooms. Use cardboard boxes to see the true size of your new surround. Sometimes it's difficult to determine how the new fireplace surround will actually fit into your room. Experts recommend using cardboard cutouts and placing them around the existing fireplace so that you can see exactly how much space is tak-
en up and how the new fireplace surround will impact your living area. Use samples. Have you ever decided to paint your house? Wrong color.You put a splash of the color up on the walls and then realize you hate the color that you had loved so much in the store. Let that be a lesson. Be sure to take samples of the materials you will use for your fireplace surround. Take them

especially with young trees, as excessive pruning may delay or reduce fruiting and create too much leafy growth. I have called three window companies and each tells me that they don’t know. A: The energy tax breaks are tax credits, not deductions, so it

From New Orleans and Cabinets By Design, Inc., designer Christina Sheets confirms. “Down here wood species don’t matter.” Given The Big Easy’s penchant for preserving old things, many homeowners refinish rather than replace their vintage hardwood floors, Sheets explains. The floors are then stained to complement — not match - new hardwood cabinets. “We also like to mix cabinets in the same kitchen,” she says. “The idea is to create visual contrast between the work island and the perimeter cabinets. Locally, popular mixes include cherry and cypress for cabinets, and butcher block on the work island. “If the perimeter cabinets differ from the work island, we might put the same countertop material on both,” Sheets says. “But if the cabinets are alike, we’d use different countertops for contrast, say, granite
Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 and butcher block.” Arizona designer Elizabeth Spengler, who creates kitchens for Dorado Designs, Inc., in Oro Valley, often uses one color for base cabinets and another for wall cabinets. Her own kitchen is a medley of contrasting woods and colors: red birch flooring, glazed oak base cabinets, perimeter wall cabinets painted granny apple-green, and a cherry-stained work island with a black glaze. Spengler also advocates a mix of different wood species throughout the house, such as a rift-cut oak in a contemporary kitchen with birds-eye maple furniture in the dining room and olive ash burl pieces in the living room. Even hardwood floors in adjacent rooms may vary “as long as you use some transitional device to make it work,” Elizabeth says. Her favorite: a border incorporating the wood species or color from the floor next door. “Just make sure there’s enough contrast to show you mean it,” she says. “Near-misses don’t make it.” What about wood mouldings in the kitchen? As a general rule, the designers agree that ceiling
mouldings should be finished like the wall cabinets. Base and other mouldings usually follow suit. The pros point out that painted mouldings make the space look lighter and more open, while stained wood creates warmth and coziness. New York designer John Buscarello is definitely a paint partisan. “Paint the mouldings,” urges Buscarello, whose kitchens have been featured at the National Kitchen and Bath Industry Show and in dozens of decorating magazines. “Painted ceiling mouldings make the ceiling look higher and the rooms look larger.” Painting also downplays mouldings, he says, “and lets the wood of the cabinets be the star.” So stop worrying and let the fun begin. Mix it up. The experts have spoken.
