Smart gardening: water and weed wisely (ARA) - Part of the joy in planting beautiful flower beds and produce gardens each summer is in daydreaming about the outcome. Summer garden daydreams involve the anticipation of the blooming daisies, the splash of color added by waves of petunias, biting into juicy tomatoes and cooking up crisp green peppers or yellow squash. Gardening dreams and plans, however, don’t generally include hours of watering, wilted plants or those pesky weeds. These unwanted guests aren’t just unattractive, but can also rob flowers and vegetables of water, nutrients and sunlight, therefore restricting the growth of prized plants. Watering and controlling weeds in your containers and gardens need not be time-consuming or difficult. Practicing smart weed control and wise watering measures should be a simple part of garden care and can be easily incorporated into routines. • Soil to build on Amend before planting and improve growth and moisture control by mixing in a layer of rich compost from Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Garden Soil. This increases the water holding ability and water absorption of your soil. For container
gardening, use MiracleGro Moisture Control Potting Mix to help hold water longer. Also, using a large pot helps keep plants from becoming root-bound quickly and thirsting for water. The more room plants have to grow, the less watering needed. • Mulch is a must - A two or three inch layer of mulch on the garden will break down over time and add to the nutritional make-up of soil. Layering a hardwood mulch in flowerbeds or container gardens will accomplish three goals: helping to prevent weeds from getting established; giving beds and containers a finished look and holding moisture in the soil. Additionally, the Water Smart technology used in this product has a water chan-
neling property. This prevents over-watering in flower and produce beds by channeling water directly to the roots, reducing the amount of water needed by up to 30 percent compared to ordinary mulches. • Water wisely - Gardens and containers do require watering to thrive when rainfall is insufficient or infrequent, but a few watering tips can conserve time, water and help make the most of the rainfall that Mother Nature does provide. To maximize the effectiveness of watering, take care to water deeply by wetting soil thoroughly. Use a moisture meter to ensure that roots have received enough moisture. “Ok, we’ve all heard the horror stories of what a nightmare building a house can be; the time, the money, the frustrations, and all too often, sadly the disappointments. ‘It will stress your life, strain your marriage or drive you to bankruptcy.’ The unfortunate part is this should not be the
case. Building a house should be exciting, enjoyable, and often accompanies a joyous occasion such as an expanding or new family, a new job, or a planning for the future. We trepidatiously began down this road in the summer of 2008. It was overwhelming. Where to build, what style, how big? The questions were endless, but none where more important than who was to be the builder. This one decision will single handedly determine your building experience. We met with or interviewed 4 different builders, all of whom were polite, knowledgeable, and capable of making the building process sound achievable. However, one stood out from the others. Muirfield Homes by Alan Chesier would never go so far as to call the process easy. They used terms like, ‘you will get out of it what you put into it’, ‘this is a partnership between us and you, with the same desired end result’, or ‘we can do anything you want, but it will cost time and money.’ This kind of straight forward talk was refreshing to hear. There were decisions that would need to be made and they would be happy to do this for us, as this is what they do for a living, or we could micro manage the process as much as we wanted, however as we had never attempted anything like this before this, in their experience, would result in delays and costing overruns. Armed with this knowledge we began talking with people who had built with them previously. To a person they all spoke of the positive experience building a house with Muirfield had been. Their descriptions were not some made up fantasy land of ‘oh it was so easy and effortless.’ Their praise was much higher using words such as ‘honest, fair, straightforward, hand-holding.’ Even when things had not gone as planned it was emphasized that Muirfield had always ‘made it right.’ With this our decision was made. Immediately after signing with Muirfield we had a meeting with all of their staff who would be involved with the creation of our home. They asked us for our goals and then laid out a clear plan to get there. There were no hidden costs. Everything down to the penny was shown in advance of the charge and usually a lower cost alternative was given. The decisions were always ours to make with full knowledge of any penalties clearly documented. This meant that at the end there were absolutely no surprises and no added stress. Now it would be foolish to say that it was six months of no problems. Any project would come with challenges and in building a house you would expect no difference. However these problems would not consume my daily thoughts. There was no need to go to the site everyday or try to find what had been done. I knew that everyday there was someone from Muirfield at the site overseeing all work, and I knew they were there for me. While I did my job they were there doing theirs. They were my eyes and ears, they were my representative. Never once did I question that their loyalty was to me. They were charged with making my dream reality and it was a responsibility they took to heart. Building a house is a process, a string of deci-
sions that create a warm and safe shelter out of what was once exposed emptiness. For the most part we all begin this process with little knowledge and virtually no experience, and somehow hope that we will obtain a dream. The only way this is possible is to have someone guide you down the path, and to me there is no better shepherd than Muirfield Homes. They did not build us a house. They gave us a place where we laugh, watch it snow, gather to celebrate holidays; where my daughter will take her first steps. They gave us a place to be a family, and as such I now consider them as well. They gave us a home.” Andrew R. Transitioning to a new home and routine can be difficult for many pets. The stress and worry can cause out of character behavior, as well as lowered immune responses. In order to ease your pets into a move, it's important to consider what makes them feel safe, secure, and stable. First, if you are moving out of the area, be sure that your pet is current on all of their vaccines and treatments. Refill any prescriptions and consider microchipping your pet, as moves are a common time that pets become lost. Be sure that you are well-stocked on their normal food and treats. Changing diets can cause upset tummies
and general unrest. In fact, it may be best to pack a Ziplock bag of dry food in your overnight bag. This way there is no scramble to find food at the last minute. On the day of the move, when doors are left wide open and strangers are coming and going, consider dropping your pets off with a friend or leaving them at doggy day care. This is as much for your benefit as it is for your pets'. Before you introduce a dog to your new home, create a space that is all their own. Choose a room and set up their bed, food, and toys. Cats will want to check out their entire "kingdom." Just be sure they know where their litter box, food, and water are. Cesar Milan, known
as The Dog Whisper, recommends that when traveling with your dog you do the following: 1. Prepare. Have a game plan ahead of time. Are you going to need food, water, or medication on the drive? When and how often will you take breaks? 2. Bring along a favorite blanket or toy. Dogs love their stuff. Blankets and toys can bring comfort to an otherwise stressful situation. 3. Don't feed your dog for 6 hours before a plane ride. 4. Use Lavender scents. This great scent can be calming to both you and the dog. Consider mixing a small spray bottle with water and a few drop of natural lavender essential oil. 5. Take a long walk.
