Keep winter’s chill from leaking into your warm house (ARA) - Drafty attics, fireplaces, leaky windows and open vents provide the perfect opportunity for winter’s chill to sneak into your house and have you shivering from the cold. Not only does this cause you to huddle under extra layers of clothing and heavy blankets, but also probably has you spending more money than you want turning up the thermostat.

Drafts, such as those around doors, windows and pipes, are the largest source of heating and cooling loss in the home. Most homeowners tackle the easy leaks by caulking and weather-stripping to minimize energy loss and drafts.

But what can you do about drafts from the four largest “holes” in your home - the folding attic stair, the whole house fan, the fireplace and the clothes dryer?

An easy solution to this problem is to add an insulated attic stair cover. An attic stair cover seals the stairs to stop drafts and energy loss. Add the desired amount of insulation over the cover to restore the insulation removed from the ceiling.

Whole house fans and air conditioning vents Much like attic stairs above, installing a whole house fan creates a large hole (up to 16 square feet or larger) in your ceiling. The ceiling and insulation that were there have to be removed, leaving only the drafty ceiling shutter between you and the outdoors.

Artful design pairings create a culinary paradise in your kitchen (ARA) - Just as matching food with the right wine can elevate a simple meal to the level of a culinary experience, artfully pairing design elements in your kitchen can turn a utilitarian room into a chef’s paradise.

“Properly pairing food and wine that complement each other is always a key ingredient in serving a memorable meal,” says Teo Zagroba, Beverage Manager at The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wis. “It’s equally important to ensure that key design elements in your kitchen pair together well, creating a room that is functional, beautiful and inspiring.”

Just as you would seek wine selection advice from a sommelier, it pays to get some design pairing tips from a kitchen expert. Diana Schrage, senior interior designer at the Kohler Design Center, offers these tips for making successful design pairing decisions for your kitchen: Sinks and faucets “The experience of cooking in a kitchen where function and beauty are paramount can be as delightful as the gourmet meal itself,” Schrage says. “Think of this when beginning

Where people saw nothing but fields west of Interstate 35, he saw an area with potential for exceptional homes and businesses to meet Norman’s growing needs. He named his first development, Brookhaven.

Don began a real estate brokerage in 1962 at 1203 Brookhaven Blvd. That original location continues today. Although originally created to market Brookhaven homes, Don Cies Real Estate, Inc. soon began to “sell ALL of Norman” and properties throughout Central Oklahoma. When he decided it was time to expand, he opened a second office at 424 W. Main Street to meet Norman’s growing real estate needs.

When townhomes were a little known concept in Norman, Don developed one of the Southwest’s premiere townhome developments, Brookhaven Square, of which he was exceptionally proud.

Don didn’t limit his vision to the west side of I-35. He saw a need for development in east Norman as well. Summit Lakes filled a strong demand for single family homes. Along with Summit Lakes, Don offered more housing choices with Summit Lake Villas, a gated townhome development, as well as the country estate homes of Blue Creek Estates and the great location of Summit Valley.

In addition to real estate sales and development, Don started his own building company, Homes of Distinction. His desire to provide people with the home of their dreams was something that he cultivated through the years, resulting in one of Norman’s premier building companies.

As one of Norman’s early real estate pioneers, Don was instrumental in creating the Norman Multi-Listing Services, a system of sharing information about real estate property among real estate professionals. He was a member of the Norman Board of Realtors,

Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club He was a Sooner Centurion and served as President of the Norman Builders Association.

A devoted family man, Don enjoyed traveling with his wife, Patty, and looking for inspiration in the homes and developments he admired abroad Don & Patty Cies and bringing that diversity back to Norman. Painting was another part of Don’s life; he was particularly fond of painting landscapes and Southwest themes.

Don also cared about his “brokerage family,” the Realtors and employees. He was a man easy to be loyal to because he exemplified integrity. He didn’t take shortcuts, and he didn’t say things that couldn’t be proven. As busy as his many projects kept him, he still took time to make certain everyone was taken care of. He was often observed asking clients waiting for an appointment with someone if he could get them anything.

It was always Don’s wish for the business to keep moving forward in the unlikely event that something might happen to him. In honoring his wishes, Evan Nixon, President, and Marilyn Bourlier, Vice President of The Cies Companies, will carry on the developments that Don began nearly 50 years ago.

Tom McAuliffe, Vice President and managing broker of Don Cies Real Estate will continue real estate sales along with the rest of our Don Cies Real Estate family. Randy Peterson, Vice President of the building company, Homes of Distinction, will remain building custom and speculative homes throughout Norman. Reclaim your garage in a weekend (ARA) - Is your garage dingy, cluttered and in need of a facelift? Transforming it into a “showroom” for your car, reclaiming it for a workshop, playroom or man cave isn’t difficult. All it takes is a weekend and a little elbow grease.

“Many homeowners view the garage as an extension of the home not just a place to store the lawn mower,” says Rust-Oleum brand manager, Mark Wilgen. “A clean, well organized garage can provide extra living space, as well as add value to a home. And, reclaiming it can be a fun weekend project families can do together.”

Here’s how to get started: Get rid of the clutter.

Remove outdoor furniture, sports equipment, lawn mowers and garage clutter. Bag the

trash, donate too-small bikes and other items you no longer need and decide what will go back in the garage after your work is done. If you’re like most homeowners, you’ll gain a lot of space by clearing the clutter.

Paint the walls. Most homeowners don’t think about painting the walls of their garage. Yet, a coat of ordinary latex paint can go a long way in brightening the space and giving it a finished look. If the garage has never been painted - or it’s been painted with porous builders’ flat paint - make sure you prime first with a quality primer like Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3. It will seal the surface for a better paint job and you’ll use less paint.

Don’t forget the floor.

Sweep it clean. Then remove dirt, oil or grease spots using a cleaner/degreaser and a

stiff bristle brush and rinse thoroughly. To give your garage a showroomquality floor that will make you the talk of your neighborhood, finish it with a coating specifically formulated for garage floors like RustOleum Garage Floor Coating.

Materials needed: table and chairs, Krylon Dual paint and primer spray paint in two complementary colors (example: Regal Blue and Khaki), a screwdriver, painter’s tape and a

drop cloth.

Instructions: • Set up a well-ventilated spray area by covering a flat work surface and the floor with a drop cloth.

• Disassemble the table top and chair bases from the legs and then clean all surfaces.

• Cover or fill screw holes with small pieces of tape so that paint does not clog the holes.

• To paint the table top, turn it upside down and first paint the bottom surface.

• Once it’s dry, turn the table top right side up and elevate it by 2 to 3 inches to ensure coverage of the edges.

• When painting the chairs, begin by inverting them and painting the bottom sides first. Be

sure to paint from every side so that you don’t miss any surface. Allow to dry completely, turn right side up and finish painting from each side.

• To paint the base of the table, spray one side

at a time, allowing it to dry in between.

• Finally, closely inspect each piece before you reassemble to make sure that the surfaces are fully covered.
