Monken proves invaluable to Cowboy coaching staff hen Todd Monken came to Oklahoma State two years ago, many wondered if he would be able to take the OSU offense — created by former offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen — to the next level. While in his first year, Monken had the pleasure of working with a first-round NFL draft pick at quarterback and a two-time Fred Biletnikoff, and top-five draft pick, at wide receiver. With that type of talent, it Jason would be hard to screw up an offense, and he effectiveElmquist ly led the Cowboy pass NewsPress attack to a record-setting year and a win in the Fiesta sports editor Bowl. But this year has been Monken’s true test. And so far, he looks to be passing with a solid B. The former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers coach has had to make do with three different starting quarterbacks thanks to a plague of injuries. All three quarterbacks — true freshman Wes Lunt, redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh and junior Clint Chelf — came into the season with zero starting experience in college football. With Monken utilizing his coaching skills and focusing on the strengths of the different quarterbacks, the Cowboy offense is fourth in the country in total yards per game and third in points per

Coach Monken does a great job with what he’s given,” Oklahoma State receiver Charlie Moore said. “When you can trust in a coach like that, it just helps so much. And we have that trust in Coach Monken.” The points per game takes a dip in conference games, but still stands at 34.7 — largely due to OSU’s 20-14 victory over Kansas, just the second time in the last three years that the Cowboys haven’t eclipsed 30 points. While the Pokes have suffered three losses to date — in which they still averaged 34.7 points — the defeats could easily be chalked up to youthful inexperience. In the three losses, OSU’s

quarterbacks threw a combined eight interceptions with two of them being returned for touchdowns. Ever the coach, Monken typically took responsibility after the losses — blaming his play calling at times. Some of that may be true, but at the same time, he’s not the guy throwing the ball into double coverage — and probably didn’t call for the quarterback to do such. Either way, the success of Oklahoma State’s make shift quarterbacking carousel this season squarely lands on Monken’s shoulders. Yes, he does have some talent to work with. But as can be proven around the country, talent doesn’t always win games if you don’t have the right guy coaching them. “He’s doing great with whatever he’s doing with the quarterbacks in the meeting room,” Moore said, “and it’s showing on Saturdays.” This is easily Monken’s crowning jewel in these two short years in the program. And for college athletic directors looking for head coaches come the middle of December, the OSU offensive coordinator should clearly be on many a short list with what he’s done. 2012 Bedlam

A new Bedlam tradition

Gundy hopes to build on last year By Andrew Glover Stillwater NewsPress

OSU head coach Mike Gundy, right, goes to the postgame handshake as the winning coach on Dec. 3, 2011, at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

On Dec. 3, 2011, Oklahoma State University coach Mike Gundy finally got a monkey off his back. After suffering six grueling defeats, Gundy got to meet Bob Stoops at the traditional postgame handshake as the winning coach, with a 44-10 victory and a Big 12 Conference title. The victory made a case for Oklahoma State to play for the BCS national title. “I don’t think there is any question that Oklahoma State should play in the big game,” Gundy said after the victory. “After what our team accomplished tonight and the way they did it — beating the No. 10 team in the country, I don’t think

there is any question they deserve an opportunity to play for it all.” Saturday, Gundy hopes to lead his Cowboys to their first winning streak in the Bedlam series since 2002 and 2003. As great as last season’s game was, Gundy’s first meeting with Oklahoma was exactly the opposite. The Sooners routed the Cowboys 42-14 behind running back Adrian Peterson’s 237 yards rushing and two touchdowns. OU quarterback Rhett Bomar threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Oklahoma scored the first 21 points of the game before Oklahoma State finally got on the board with a Julius Crosslin 1-yard run. Crosslin scored again in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys’ offense struggled as it

only averaged 2.4 yards per play and 0.4 yards per rush. Gundy, who was in his first year as the Cowboys head coach, said a lot of that was because of Oklahoma’s front seven. “They have the best front seven we faced all year,” Gundy said following that game. “We just had a lot of trouble with (Dusty) Dvoracek. He made it very difficult for us up front.” The loss ended Oklahoma State’s season at 4-7. The 2005 Bedlam game was one of the few during the 2000s where neither team was fighting for a Big 12 title. The next three games, the Sooners entered with a Big 12 South Title on the line. • See GUNDY, OSU 7

2012 Bedlam

The Gundy era • From OSU 6 In 2006, the Cowboys got to host their first Bedlam game in the Gundy era. The Pokes got off to a great start with Dantrell Savage scoring on a 5-yard run. The Sooners would score the next three touchdowns and hold a 20-7 lead at the beginning of the third. Starting quarterback Bobby Reid made it a one-score

game with a 1-yard run. OU answered with a 1-yard run by Chris Brown. OSU would get one more score in the fourth when Reid connected with D’Juan Woods. The Cowboys weren’t able to rally as Zac Robinson’s hail mary fell short after he replaced an injured Reid. The next season back in Norman, the Cowboys weren’t much of an obstacle to the

Sooners’ Big 12 South title hopes. Oklahoma scored the first two touchdowns with running back Allen Patrick scoring on an 11-yard pass from Sam Bradford and a 5-yard run. Just like 2006, Savage got the Cowboys on the board with a 16yard reception. Brown scored on a 3-yard run three minutes into the second quarter to put OU up 21-7. Bradford threw his second

touchdown pass to Joe Jon Finley. Oklahoma led 28-10 at halftime and would win 49-17. The 2008 game was the first time both teams were ranked, with Oklahoma third after routing the No. 2 Texas Tech Red Raiders the previous week. Oklahoma State entered ranked 12th with its only losses to Texas and Texas Tech. The game was back-and-forth

for the entire first half. Oklahoma took the lead early in the first quarter with a DeMarco Murray 20-yard run. The Cowboys got a field goal from Dan Bailey and Kendall Hunter scored on a 23-yard pass from Robinson to put OSU ahead 10-7 with 13:24 left in the second. The Sooners regained the lead and • See GUNDY, OSU 8

The Gundy era • From OSU 7 didn’t relinquish it when Brown scored on a 2-yard run. The Cowboys stayed within a score until early in the third quarter and trailed 21-13 at halftime. Dez Bryant caught a 6-yard pass from Robinson to pull the Pokes to within two. On the two-point conversion OSU fumbled and Frank Alexander returned it to score two points for the Sooners. A minute later, Bradford completed a pass to Jermaine Gresham, who went the distance for a 73-yard touchdown, pushing OU’s advantage to 30-19 with 10:13 left in the third. For the next 15 minutes, both teams alternated scores. The Sooners would score the last 17 points of the game to clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game. In 2009 the tables were switched, as Oklahoma State entered the game ranked 12th in the BCS and 11th in the AP poll and Oklahoma was 6-5. The Sooners lost starting quarterback Sam Bradford earlier in the season and were coming off

a 41-13 loss to Texas Tech in Lubbock. The Pokes would see their BCS hopes get dashed as the Sooners shut them out 27-0. Oklahoma State only picked up six first downs and 103 total yards of offense. “The only good thing about this is it counts as one loss, and I told the team that,” Gundy had said after the upset loss. “To move forward, you have to let go. This team has accomplished a lot. We have an opportunity to go play in a very good bowl game.” Ryan Broyles would be a thorn in the Cowboys’ side as he returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown and caught nine passes for 103 yards. In 2010, the Cowboys were ranked higher than the Sooners at ninth, four spots ahead of the Sooners. This game would be back and forth as OU scored first with Trey Milliard scoring on a 6yard run. OSU responded with a 23-yard field goal from Dan Bailey. Broyles caught a 2-yard pass from Landry Jones that put the Sooners ahead 13-3. The game kept switching between a one- and

two-score game. Oklahoma State trailed 24-17 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Pokes knotted the score with Josh Cooper catching a 20yard pass from Brandon Weeden. Oklahoma got three consecutive field goals from Jimmy Stevens to lead 33-24 with 5:53 left. Oklahoma State cut OU’s lead to one score three times. Justin Blackmon cut the Sooners’ lead to 33-31 with a 15-yard reception. Justin Gilbert returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 40-38. Dan Bailey cut the lead to 47-41 with a 34 yard field goal. Broyles recovered the onside kick to snuff out the rally. Last season was the third consecutive that Oklahoma State entered with BCS aspirations, ranking third. The Cowboys weren’t just trying to get over their overtime loss to Iowa State, they were also dealing with the tragic loss of women’s basketball head coach Kurt Budke, assistant Miranda Serna and pilot Olin Branstetter and his wife Paula in a Nov. 17 plane crash.

Unlike the previous six meetings with Oklahoma, the Pokes were the ones who jumped out to a lead. Joseph Randle scored two touchdowns and Jeremy Smith scored one to help OSU take a 24-0 lead in the second quarter. The Sooners only points in the first half was a 48-yard field goal by Michael Hunnicut. In the second half, the Cowboys slammed the door on any rally by OU, scoring 20 unanswered points in the third quarter. Richetti Jones returned a fumble for a touchdown and Smith scored his second touchdown run. At the end of the night, the Cowboys were celebrating with their fans. This year’s chapter of the Bedlam rivalry may not have the Big 12 title on the line, but Oklahoma State could be seeking to take second place and BCS bid away from the Sooners. For Lowe, the choice was easy By Andrew Glover Stillwater NewsPress

In 2009, Oklahoma State University junior safety Daytawion Lowe was a senior at Midwest City with a scenario that high school seniors across the state could only dream of — getting recruited by both the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. “It was a big deal,” Lowe said. “Being an Oklahoma kid, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were the big in-state schools.” For Lowe, the choice between the crimson and cream of Oklahoma and the orange and black of OSU was an easy one. “I just love the Cowboys,” Lowe said. “I’ve always loved the Cowboys. It was a very easy choice. I loved everything about my visit and it worked out well.” Lowe got to play right away and led the team in tackles with 97 last year. The junior safety said it’s been a dream come true to play for Oklahoma State. “I got to stay in the state,” Lowe said. “My family gets to come down and see me play.” For most of the 2000s the Sooners were • See BOTH, OSU 11

The Cowboys were starting to put victories together under Mike Gundy, with 2009 being the first Bedlam game in a long time that Oklahoma State was the higher ranked team. In Lowe’s first game, the Cowboys lost a high-scoring affair 47-41, and for the second straight season had its BCS hopes

dashed. Last season, Oklahoma State routed Oklahoma 44-10 for its first victory since 2002. Lowe said last season’s victory was exciting but said he doesn’t really think about the fact that OU recruited him. “It was big last year winning the first Big 12 title and the first BCS win,” Lowe said. “It’s a big in-state rivalry. ... Other than that (being recruited by OU) doesn’t

mean that much.” Last season, the junior safety had a team-high of nine tackles. Lowe said he hopes last season’s victory will start turning the Bedlam Rivalry the Cowboys’ way. “Hopefully we can keep turning this around,” Lowe said. Though this year’s game will likely not have Big 12 title implications, it could

have BCS inspirations depending on the results of Kansas State’s last two games. “It’s just how it is,” Lowe said. “It’s just how this game goes. It’s a marvelous rivalry.” Stillwater NewsPress sports writer Andrew Glover can be reached by aglover@stwnewspress.com

Oklahoma natives aim at Bedlam rivals By Nick Snow Stillwater NewsPress

Oklahoma State senior defensive end Cooper Bassett knew shortly after he began to talk that he was going to play football for the Cowboys one day. The words “Boomer Sooner” just didn’t fit right.

So even, when Oklahoma made an attempt to change Bassett’s allegiances late in his high school career, the Tuttle native refused to budge. “They recruited me out of high school just a little bit, but they never offered,” Bassett said. “I told them that I was honored that they recruited me, but I was never really that interested in OU.”

For every Cooper Bassett or Clint Chelf on the team — a guy that has bled orange since the day he was born — there’s at least 10 guys such as junior running back Jeremy Smith or junior safety Shamiel Gary. Smith and Gary — a pair of Tulsa natives — likely had dreams of one day putting on the crimson and cream in front

of the thousands of rabid Sooner fans. But the offers never came. “I think everybody grows up wanting to play for a team in your home state,” Gary said. “I was kind of like a lot of the guys on our team. I was recruited by OU, but they never gave me an offer.” • See FANS, OSU 13

For the fans • From Page OSU 12 Now Oklahoma State and coach Mike Gundy couldn’t be happier. The players the Sooners didn’t want are starting to develop into crucial pieces of Oklahoma State’s foundation of success in recent years. And while they may not admit that they are out to prove something to the Oklahoma coaching staff, it’s easy to see that there’s still a hint of feeling slighted. “It’s not that I have anything to prove against the coaching staff,” Bassett said. “If anything, my motivation is for all those little kids that are like me that are OSU fans. I want to give them something to be proud about and something to rub in all their friends’ faces the next Monday at school.” “We’re not really out to prove anything,” Gary said. “They have a great staff and obviously they have recruited the

right guys that fit in their system. We’re just going to go out there and try to win for our school and our fans.” Instead, Bassett said his motivation is not to show the Sooners’ staff they made a mistake, but to end his Bedlam career on a high note. “The fact of the matter is that we’re all here playing for Oklahoma State,” Bassett said. “I’m sure some guys would have liked to have played for OU, but none of that really matters any more. They’re rivals, so it motivates you to want to beat them. It should be a fun game and one that everybody on this team looks forward to — no matter if you were recruited by OU or not.” Stillwater NewsPress sports writer By Nick Snow can be reached at nicksnow@stwnewspress.com

Cowboy coaching staff. In the six previous season under Gundy, Oklahoma State had never beaten their Bedlam foes. But alas, that is no more. “I think I could see a sigh of relief from him after we won that game,” Gilbert said. “Who knows what he did after that game in regards to celebrating. But for coach Gundy and all the coaches, I’m pretty sure it was a great feeling to finally get that win.” It also gives the Cowboy players a better mindset when facing their in-state rivals from Norman. “We can’t say that we’ve never beaten them before and go into

the game expecting to lose or something,” Gilbert said. The win, however, went deeper than simply earning Oklahoma State a Big 12 championship and the program’s first berth to a BCS bowl. The success of the season, capped with the Bedlam victory and a win in the Fiesta Bowl, gave the university a boost in enrollment as OSU saw a surge in just one year with the largest freshman class -- topping the previous high, set 30 years ago, by nearly 400. As for the football program, the year in the limelight gave OSU endless amounts of free

publicity for recruiting with the OSU brand plastered all across the country and highlighting ESPN’s SportsCenter. “I don’t think that there’s any question, when you’re ranked high you’re going to get publicity and marketing across the country,” Gundy said earlier this season. “When you’re really good, your logo’s on ESPN and your logo runs at the bottom of other channels and people see that. When that happens, you get free marketing.” Stillwater NewsPress sports editor Jason Elmquist can be reached at jelmquist@stwnewspress.com.

What does Bedlam mean?

For Oklahomans, rivalry sparks powerful emotions By Nick Snow Stillwater NewsPress

This time of the year most kids are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Christmas. But while his peers grew up with visions of sugar plumbs dancing in their heads, Oklahoma State senior defensive end Cooper Bassett was anticipating another day simply known as Bedlam. “Watching the Bedlam series as a kid, I remember either being so excited or so devastated to go to school the next Monday,” Bassett said. “If OSU won, I was so pumped to wear all the orange stuff I had in my closet to school and rub it in all my friends’ faces that were Sooners. It was the polar opposite if we lost. I dreaded going to school and hearing ‘Boomer Sooner’ the rest of the year because we lost.” The rivalry has heated up during recent

years with the success of both teams, making it one of the best rivalries in college football. “Wyoming and Colorado State doesn’t even compare to Bedlam,” said Oklahoma State junior safety Shamiel Gary, who transferred from Wyoming after his sophomore season. “This is Bedlam we’re talking about. In my family, we have people that won’t even speak to each other weeks after the game because it brings out so much emotions.” It’s no secret that emotions tend to run their highest when it comes to the annual rivalry. No doubt there will likely be some tense moments around the Thanksgiving table as Gary’s family comes together two days before the biggest game in the state. “We may give each other a hard time, but it’s all in good fun,” Gary said. “That’s what is so great about this rivalry. You’ll be able to have a little fun at others’ expense,

but you have to know that you might get the same treatment next year.” And while the emotions may run high in Gary’s household, Bassett will be feeling a different emotion Saturday. For someone who grew up basking in the beauty that is Bedlam, Saturday will be the last time the Tuttle native will suit up against the Sooners. “Whenever that week comes, there’s always a little bit of added motivation to beat your rival,” Bassett said. “For me, it’s my last chance to play against them and I don’t want to leave with a sour taste in my mouth. “It makes it fun that week because it makes you want to practice that much harder every week. I’ll be looking forward to that week when it gets here.” Stillwater NewsPress sports writer By Nick Snow can be reached at nicksnow@stwnewspress.com

Young guns fill Pistol Pete’s posse

Cowboys setting themselves up for the future By Nick Snow Stillwater NewsPress

A program that’s a national power like Oklahoma’s typically doesn’t have rebuilding years. When one player graduates, they just reload with the next man in line. Oklahoma State doesn’t have that kind of recognition yet, but with the help of some younger players the Cowboys are well on their way to equaling — if not surpassing — their in-state rivals. “It’s unbelievable,” Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young said. “When you look at our linebackers, all of them are underclassmen, and they are so much better than they were a year ago. Glenn Spencer has done a phenomenal job with those guys. In the defensive line, James Castleman and some of those younger players have really gotten better.” At times this year the youth and inexperience on both sides of the ball has caused some headaches for the Oklahoma State coaching staff. But with each game, Young said he’s seeing fewer and fewer mistakes as those players learn the system. AP Photo

Young guns fill Pistol Pete’s posse • From OSU 17 “Obviously you don’t want your players to make any mistakes, but we’re kind of at a point where we’re not making a bunch of mental errors, which is really good,” Young said. “We’re playing a lot of people, which in turn keeps us fresh for the fourth quarter and gives those younger guys reps. That’s only going to make them better players down the road.” The Sooners may have the advantage of a little more experience when it comes to total games played, but it isn’t like the Cowboys’ budding stars have been sitting on the bench all season. Players like sophomore Josh Stewart and junior Charlie Moore have had to step up and fill in for veterans like Tracy Moore and Isaiah Anderson during injuries. In fact, of Oklahoma State’s 22

touchdown passes, only four have been caught by a senior — all by Tracy Moore in the Arizona game. With Tracy Moore likely to get a medical redshirt, the Cowboys would be returning everybody on offense who has scored a touchdown to date for OSU. “It means we can’t get Isaiah (Anderson, a senior from Wichita Falls, Texas) a touchdown and that will wreck that,” Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken joked. “But I think it feels good. I doesn’t make you feel any better now, but we’re playing a lot of young guys and I think they’ve played a lot better than could have been expected.” Stewart may be leading the charge as far as one of the young offensive players having a breakout season, but according to Oklahoma State running back Joseph Randle his success is because he’s used

to playing under pressure. “Didn’t (Stewart) win a state championship in high school?” Randle said. “He might have had more people at that game than we’ve ever had here. I know he had a lot more than I had at my games in high school. He’s used to it by now.” Some younger players may shy away from the spotlight from time to time, but Stewart says that spotlight is only going to get brighter and brighter in the next few years. “It’s going to be big,” Stewart said. “The future is real bright for us and the rest of this season is bright for us. We’re excited to see how we’re going to turn out. We’re probably going to be pretty good.” For that to happen, Young said the key will be reloading — just like Oklahoma has done in recent years.

“If we can find a couple of players and fill in some slots on defense, we’re going to be really good,” Young said. “We recruited two young corners that are freshmen who play good defense now and they’ll be much better next year. They’ll need to be because we’re losing Brodrick (Brown). Defensive end will be a priority. We have some young guys in the program now and we’re recruiting some guys at the junior college level that could have an immediate impact for us next year.” Stillwater NewsPress sports writer Nick Snow can be reached at nicksnow@stwnewspress.com

BEDLAM MATCHUPS COACHING

Last year’s 44-10 blowout of Oklahoma had to do wonders for the Cowboy coaching staff. Oklahoma State has clearly crept closer to their Bedlam counterparts. They were one ill-timed loss away from getting to the BCS national championship game a year ago, but still won a Big 12 Conference crown. Both coaches will earn their merit with this game as both teams still have a shot at a trip to the Fiesta Bowl — if Kansas State remains unbeaten and plays for the BCS title. The Cowboy coaching staff isn’t afraid of the big, bad Bedalm rivals any more. The matchup is a push.

RUNNING GAME

PA S S D E F E N S E

Oklahoma State has 400 more yards passing than does Oklahoma, but the Cowboys have had to utilize three different starting quarterbacks who hadn’t started a college game before this season. The Sooners have an experienced quarterback — and don’t have to choose from three potential candidates — to claim the advantage.

The Cowboys have nearly 2,000 yards rushing with more than half of it coming from junior running back Joseph Randle with 1,008 yards. Factor in that Blake Bell is responsible for 10 touchdowns and the numbers get a little skewed. Oklahoma State ran for 278 yards against the Sooners last season with Joseph Randle getting 151 yards and two touchdowns and backup Jeremy Smith running for 119 and two TDs. Bell was a virtual non-factor.

What was supposed to be the catalyst for the Cowboys this year has been its greatest weakness. The OSU passing defense with talented, but well underperforming players such as Brodrick Brown and Justin Gilbert has been burnt worse than toast — to the tune of 259.6 yards per game — while intercepting a conference-low six pass attempts. Meanwhile, Oklahoma clearly has the top pass defense in the conference.

RUN DEFENSE

SPECIAL TEAMS

I N TA N G I B L E S

It’s difficult to gauge the run defense for both teams. OU goes all-out on pass defense, which leads opponents to running the ball for an average of 155 yards per game with 14 touchdowns. Oklahoma State can’t stop the pass, so teams elect to go through the air more to beat the Pokes — and run the ball for just 129 yards per game. The Cowboys give up 3.5 yards per rush, while Oklahoma has given up 4.2 per attempt. OU will have troubles with a more talented backfield in OSU.

Oklahoma State appears to have cleaned up its issues in the kickoff coverage — something which has plagued the last few years. The Cowboys limited one of the country’s most electric return men (West Virginia’s Tavon Austin) to just 20 yards on kickoffs and 12 yards on punt returns. As for the returning of their own, the Cowboys had back-to-back games with kickoff returns against touchdowns against Kansas State and West Virginia. The Pokes average 28.5 yards per kickoff return.

Any other year, the biggest intangible in football — home field advantage — would play a part in the Bedlam rivalry. But this year, Oklahoma hasn’t really shown that home field advantage is in their favor. For the first time in the Bob Stoops era the Sooners have lost more than one game at home in a season. Albeit, the two losses have been to undefeated teams (Kansas State and Notre Dame). Ultimately, with OU playing at home (even if its not as much of a given as year’s past) and having a group of experienced players gives OU the edge.

2012 Bedlam

OKLAHOMA STATE RECAP he Oklahoma State University Cowboys entered the 2012 season with high expectations after winning its first Big 12 title and first BCS Bowl with the Fiesta Bowl last season. There was also some uncertainty for the Pokes as star quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Justin Blackmon were taking in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft. OSU turned its offense over to true freshman Wes Lunt. The question was who was going to step up to fill that void that last season’s stars left.

STILLWATER — The Savannah State Tigers proved to be no match for the defending Big 12 champion Cowboys. Oklahoma State raced out to a 35-0 lead with five rushing touchdowns — three by Jeremy Smith and two by Joseph Randle. By the end of the game, the Cowboys broke school records for most points in modern era and most rushing touchdowns in a game (9). Lunt shined in his debut completing all 11 pass attempts for 129 yards, becoming the first Oklahoma State player to complete all of his passes with a minimum of 10 attempts. The Pokes’ defense also had a solid outing keeping the Tigers out of the red zone much less field goal range. Oklahoma State forced two turnovers and 10 three-and-outs. Seven of Savannah State’s drives went for one yard or less.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Playing in his first road game, Lunt didn’t seem rattled as he 37 of 60 for 436 yards and four touchdown passes to Tracy Moore, who returned for a suspension. The senior wide receiver caught 8 passes for 106 yards. Those performances were overshadowed by turnovers and penalties. Along with his four touchdown passes, Lunt threw three interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown in the 4th quarter. The Cowboys lost a fumble. OSU was called for 15 penalties for 167 yards. Oklahoma State jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter but Arizona scored 30 unanswered points to lead 30-14 with 9:59 left in the third. The Pokes rallied to cut the lead to 30-28, thanks to a touchdown by Smith. With scores on four of their next six possessions the Wildcats put the game out of reach.

STILLWATER — At the beginning of the first quarter, the crowd of over 50,000 fell silent as Lunt was laying on the ground after he was hit. The true freshman quarterback had to be helped off the field after just six plays. For the first time this season, red shirt freshman quarterback J.W. Walsh entered the game with it still in hand. The Cowboys’ offense didn’t skip a beat as Walsh led them to a school record of 742 yards of total offense. Oklahoma State jumped to a 17-0 lead and a 27-point second quarter gave it a commanding 44-0 halftime lead. Walsh threw three touchdown passes to Kye Staley, Blake Jackson and Josh Stewart. Walsh finished the game with 347 yards and four touchdown passes. Randle put up two rushing touchdowns on his way to 105 yards rushing.

OKLAHOMA STATE RECAP No. 12 Texas 41, Oklahoma State 36 Sept. 29 at Boone Pickens Stadium STILLWATER — The Cowboys had no problems moving the ball on the ground against the highly-touted Texas Longhorn front seven. On 40 carries, Oklahoma State ran for 275 yards averaging 6.8 yards per touch. Randle had a career high of 199 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 69-yard run on the second play of the game. In his first career start, Walsh completed 18 of 27 passes for 301 yards with two touchdown passes. Those performances wouldn’t be enough as Texas came back in the final minute to win 41-36. The game was back-and-forth the whole way, with neither team grabbing a lead of more than eight. In the fourth quarter the lead changed hands four times. Randle’s second touchdown gave OSU a 33-28 lead. Texas responded with a one-yard run by Joe Bergeron and retook the lead 34-33 after a failed two-point conversion. The Cowboys grabbed their last lead of the game with a 24-yard field goal from Quinn Sharp, his second of the game. Bergeron put Texas on top for good with a one-yard run with 29 seconds left. The key play on that drive was David Ash converting a fourth-and-seven with a 29-yard pass to D.J. Grant.

OKLAHOMA STATE RECAP Oklahoma State 20, Kansas 14

Oklahoma State 31, Iowa State 10

Oct. 13, 2012 at Memorial Stadium

Oct. 20 at Boone Pickens Stadium

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Cowboys had to overcome weather conditions, a limited rushing attack and a late fourth quarter rally to defeat the host Jayhawks 20-14. Lightning caused a 79-minute delay towards the end of the first quarter in a scoreless contest. After the delay, Walsh got the Cowboys on the board with a four-yard run. Sharp added a field goal at the end of the half to give OSU a 10-0 lead. In the third quarter, Walsh hooked up with Charlie Moore for a 72-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive. Sharp added a 42-yard field goal in the fourth to give Oklahoma State a 20-0 lead. Kansas made a change at quarterback putting in Michael Cummings who turned the momentum. With 10:52 left in the game, Cummings threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Jimmay Mundine. Two minutes late James Sims scored on a 30-yard run cutting Oklahoma State’s lead to 20-14. Kansas looked like it was going to get one last chance to rally but Sharp induced a roughing the punter penalty, giving AP Photo OSU a first down and allowed it to run out the clock. Along Oklahoma State wide receiver Tracy Moore (87) during with two field goals, Sharp kicked two punts over 70 yards the first half against Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. on Oct. that changed the field in Oklahoma State’s favor. 13.

STILLWATER — The Cowboys’ defense dominates in a 31-10 victory over the visiting Cyclones. The Cowboys’ offense got off to a sluggish start as it trailed 10-7 after the first quarter. The defense picked it up as it forced two turnovers and six three-and-outs. For the second straight week the opponents benched its starting quarterback. The victory made coach Mike Gundy the winningest coach in OSU history with his 63rd, passing Pat Jones’ 62. Oklahoma State picked it up offensively in the second quarter. Charlie Moore once again recording the longest play from scrimmage as he got behind the Cyclones secondary for a 74-yard touchdown. Randle and Walsh added rushing touchdowns. Walsh had a career day passing with 415 yards. Unfortunately Walsh suffered an injury to his knee in the first quarter and hasn’t played in a game since.

Lunt returned, making his first start since Sept. 15 against Louisiana. His day didn’t start great as he was picked off and TCU’s Elisha Olabode returned it for a touchdown. The Horned Frogs AP Photo followed with a 18-yard pass from Oklahoma State receiver Josh Stewart had Trevone Boykin to LaDarius six catches for 120 yards in the 36-14 Brown, taking a 14-0 lead. Oklahoma State win over TCU on Oct. 27. Oklahoma State’s offense was able to move the ball but wasn’t able to cross the goal line in the first half as it had to settle for three field goals. Smith finally crossed the end zone in the third quarter after convincing coaches to go for fourth-and-goal from the one. Towards the end of the quarter Lunt hit Charlie Moore for a 20-yard touchdown to put OSU up by two scores. The Cowboys’ defense was able to get pressure on Boykins and forced three turnovers. OKLAHOMA STATE SEASON RECAP No. 3 Kansas State 44, Oklahoma State 30

Oklahoma State 55, West Virginia 34

Nov. 3 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium

Nov. 10 at Boone Pickens Stadium

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Turnovers and special teams miscues cost the Cowboys early and a late rally wasn’t enough in a 44-30 Wildcats’ victory. Kansas State scored two non-offensive touchdowns as Allen Chapman returned a Lunt interception for a 29-yard touchdown and Tyler Lockett broke a 100-yard kickoff return for a score. OSU allowed 199 kickoff return yards and 39 punt return yards. The Wildcats scored 24 points in the second quarter to hold a decisive edge. For the second time this season, Lunt was knocked out of the game. Clint Chelf had to come in, receiving his first action since the Louisiana game. Chelf was able to rally the Pokes as he threw for 233 yards and one touchdown pass. Oklahoma State outscored Kansas State 13-6 after Chelf came in.

STILLWATER — Fresh off a successful outing against Kansas State, Chelf continued where he left off throwing for 292 yards with four touchdowns in a 55-34 victory over the Mountaineers. While Chelf’s performance was strong in his first start, it was the OSU’s special teams that turned the tide. After WVU scored its first touchdown to cut the Cowboys’ lead to 14-7, Gilbert returned the kickoff 96-yards for a touchdown. Towards the end of the half, a Sharp kickoff bounced off a West Virginia player and OSU recovered deep in Mountaineer territory, leading to a field goal. In the third, Tavon Austin muffed a punt, which Teddy Johnson of OSU recovered at WVU’s 11. Charlie Moore caught a 5-yard touchdown pass to put Oklahoma State up 38-24. Receiver Josh Stewart had a career day, catching 13 passes for 172 yards with two touchdowns. The sophomore also scored on a 46-yard reverse for the first score of the game. The victory made OSU bowl eligible.

Starting quarterback Clint Chelf connected with Isaiah Anderson for three touchdown passes of 60, 33 and 66 yards, allowing the

Cowboys to jump out to a 35-7 lead in the first half. Anderson finished the game with 174 yards receiving. Chelf went 11 of 21 for 229 yards and no interceptions. Oklahoma State’s defense had a strong game as it got pressure on Tech’s high profiled quarterback Seth Doege, who was sacked three times and threw two interceptions. After a big game against West Virginia, the special teams came up with two blocked punts by junior Zack Craig, who returned the second one for a 30-yard touchdown.
