The national recession, weather disasters and just higher operating costs have increased the need for volunteers at schools, non-profit agencies and even local businesses. With a reduction in paid staff, many groups are turning to volunteers, many of them seniors, to help balance the load and the bottom line. Young people aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, too. The University of Oklahoma’s Big Event, part of a national college movement, helps local non-profit agencies, schools and churches with special projects.
