in the EDGE introduces a new reality to the Parque Natural de la Albufera, where “devices” of different nature will be assembled to respond to the existing challenges the place is facing, the endangered nature of this park and the tourism. This intervention is located in the Natural park of l´Albufera, more specifically in the Gola de Pujol, the canal that connects l´Albufera with the Mediterranean. This precious location not only has amazing views, numerus activities to be done and an incredibly rich flora and fauna, it also has the tourist attraction. Tons of tourists come to the mirador at the Gola de Pujol every day, however this visit isn´t explorative at all, leaving behind much of the beauty of this place. in the EDGE aims to unify this site to give the visitors the opportunity to explore and experience all the potential that the place has to offer. But, the Natural Park is not only about the tourists. It is also about its nature. Nowadays the Albufera is going through a critical moment, it is threatened to disappear, as the water quality is getting worse every year and this has enormous consequences on the flora and fauna of the place as well as on the fishing activities that are done regularly in the Albufera and the canal, among other things. Moreover, the architecture will act as performative and programmatic artefacts, in the sense that it is compromised with the nature of the natural park, as well as the daily tourism it shelters. Indeed, in the EDGE aims to find the balance between a conscious and sensitive tourism while improving in some way the actual conditions of the Parque Natural de la Albufera. Besides, the goal of the intervention is to be above all respectful, trying to disrupt the least the natural environment of the place, which holds a great value for the country. Furthermore, the proposal will be placed right in the edge (in the coastline of the canal), a linear intervention that unifies the site into one coherent whole, letting the visitor experience the site beyond the mirador. The final objective of this proposal is to achieve a conscious tourism while boosting the existing conditions of the Natural Park.

Parque Natural de l´Albufera is located in the Mediterranean coast at the south of the city center of Valenciat and it is a place rich in terms of the many ecosystems it shelters. There are three main ecosystems that should be highlighted; The Rice fields, la Albufera and la Devesa del Saler. The formation of the Albufera is the result of the closure of an old bay, and the definite separation between the Albufera and the sea occurred during the roman period. At that time the surface area of the Albufera was more than double than what it is nowadays. The reason? the interest in obtaining new areas of cultivation (especially rice) has been filling up, and therefore decreasing in size.

The wide biodiversity of the place is inmense, it is the shelter to species of great ecological value, in fact, in danger of extinction are found here.

Because of the history of the place and its richness in all sense, there are some local activities that have been present even since the muslim period.

Without a doubt, this park is known for the extraordinary richness of its poultry, the most important of which are the red duck with up to 10,000 specimens, the common spoon with up to 20,000 specimens and the Mallard duck.

Fishing: Nowadays, only pure-bred fishermen have the right to fish because they are members of the Cofradía de Pescadores. A tradition that is passed on from father to son with practically the same artisan techniques as seven centuries ago.

It is indeed, one of the few Albuferas that are preserved in good condition in the Valencian Community.

Agriculture: l´Albufera is the birthplace of the best rice. The Albufera has evolved along with this crop. The rice produced in the natural park is almost entirely of the type called “round” or “bomb”. Hunting: Nowadays, hunting is practised in “vedados” in Sueca, Cullera and Silla. 11

Parque Natural de l´ALBUFERA

Acequias that distribute the water to the rice crops

The Albufera is surrounded by rice crops. It is very interesting to understand the function that the albufera has over the rice fields, which is basically irrigation. First of all, there are three main connection of the albufera to the Mediterranean, called golas. These golas help to control the level of the albufera and as a result make the irrigation happen or not. On the right you can see a map where is shown the growth of the albufera by closing the golas and by the acequias. The acequias are small canals that help conduct the water to the rice crops, specially to those areas where the water of the albufera does not reach naturally. 12

Itinerario Historico

The situation of the project is done in the Gola de Pujol, the canal that connects the Albufera with the Mediterranean. The area shown in the map (up on the right) is the one which surrounds the Gola de Pujol. It is easy to appreciate from the plan and the pictures on the left, the multitude of ecosystems and things going on in this very rich environment located at the south of the city of Valencia.

14

Dunes

Estany de Pujol

Three main ecosystems can be distinguished (from left to right), the dunes, the pine forest and the Albufera. Moreover, it is important to highlight the main way to reach the area. The highway which easily connects the city center of Valencia with the Natural park, only 20 minutes away by car. The highway is very significative as it kind of divides the site in two, the Albufera (on the left) from the Pine forest (on the right). In the plan and section it also stands out the high rise buildings which holds tourist apartments inside. They were the result of an urban developement that took place in 1965 and planned to attract mass tourism to this area. Besides, an important component found in this site is the compuertas de la Gola de Pujol. The function of the gates is to regulate the water of the Albufera, although they are only used under specific situations (for example when the Albufera is flooded because of weather conditions and may ruin the crops).

site CONDITONS

There are three main aspects that should be highlighted to have a better understanding of what is going on in the site: 1 - It is easily accessible by car and by bus. Visitors most of the times come from Valencia´s city center, which is not fas from the area. 2 - Moreover, it is important to highlight that the point of activity in this area is mainly the mirador. Also the itineraries that already exists but not as much as the mirador, that tends to concentrate great amount of tourists everyday (specially sunset time). However, there is no more exploration of the rest of the site which , as seen in the previous images, has an incredible natural value to offer. 3 - So, we can say that the site is kind of fragmented into different points of activity, instead of being explored as a whole.

Place with a lot of POTENTIAL

As it has been mentioned over and over since the beginning, it is indeed, a place with a lot of potential. In two main ways: In terms of the biodiversity; The wide biodiversity of the place is immense. It is an area of international importance for birds, many fish species enter the lagoon through the gola, like the eel, there is a pine foret, the dunes... In terms of tourism, there are hikes to do by bike or by walk, Boat trip in La Albufera, Bird watching and most importantly, as we see in the pictures this site already has the tourist interest. The user basically.

Intervention responding to exiting PROBLEMS

But when understanding all the potential the Natural Park of the Albufera has, It is easy to encounter with some problems: When talking about the biodiversity: - There is lack of water quality, which threaten the future of the park - Eel fishing is decreasing every year, in fact because of the water quality - And the gates of the gola had to be open more often so as to avoid the flood of the rice fields. In terms of tourism, as I said before this place already has the user, tons of tourists come to the mirador every day, but there are no services nor facilities for them.

That is why the intervention is oriented to respond to the existing conditions and challenges that the site is facing. This means that the uses proposed for the intervention will be divided into performative and programmatic. Performative uses, reacting to the issues that have to do with the biodiversity of the place and acting to improve in some way the existing conditions of the natural park.

20

Programmatic uses, focusing on the needs of the user.

4 Pathway

Explore the Forest

There will be different ways of cirulation along the intervention so that the visitor can explore the site freely without having one only path marked out: - Steel Open Mesh Walkway To protect the local flora by allowing wind, rain and light to filter through. - Pavements Enhance different environments throughout the whole intervention. Forest Soil Get in touch with the natural landscape of the place Concrete Pavement “City carpet”

Different routes or ways to esplore the site as the visitor wants

Flower Plantation Observe the vegetation of the place and enjoy the seasonal landscaping Grass “Green Square” Relax on the lawn and contemplate the nature that surrounds you. Sett Pavement Alternative routes.

Shape strategy The shape of the pavement follow the same system as the devices, so as to make all the proposal work as one whole. Just like the canopy adapts to the conditions of the floor, landscape or uses to give shape to the devices, the pavements will follow the same strategy to enhance different directions so as to have a better exploration of all the rich conditions of the site, the forest, the canal...

All the architectural elements that have been explained previously come together into one coherent whole, providing the site that unity that it was lacking before. The intervention starts in la Albufera and ends in the intersection of several itineraries that already exist, going all along the pine forest. Furthermore, it stands out the scale of the proposal compared to the already existing infrastructures. Finally, It is important to outstand how the canopy is alter and manipulated when it reaches certain strategic spots in the site, to give shape to the different devices appear. 39

Steel Structure The grid layout of the proposal is 6 x 6 meters in tthe case of the canopy structure and the building follows it too, but with some alterarions deepending on the use that it shelters inside. The canopy structure will use hollow core steel columns and beams with square section. The dimensions of them will be the same, 200 x 200 mm (h x w). Moreover, Beams and columns will be connected by bolted L shape steel profile. The building structure is composed by HEB steel profile beams and columns. Although in certain spots where the structure is shared with the canopy the columns are hollow core steel columns .

SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

Summer Season Open Vents Fresh air enters through the bottom vents and flow within the cavity creating chimney effect and drawing hot air away from the building.

Winter Season Close Vents Trap air inside Double Skin Cavity, the air within the cavity heats up, effectively creating thermal barrier between external and internal environments

76

Eco- friendly Material 1 - ETFE is recyclable; once it has been taken from a structure it can be recycled back into useable ETFE products.

2 - ETFE is a lightweight fabric, which requi-

res less fabrication than traditional building materials, reducing C02 emissions in the air.

3 - Due to its transparency (up to 90%) ETFE can reduce the use and cost of indoor lighting.
