BELOVEDS IN CHRIST -
O
ur Winter Solstice on the 22nd of this month means that this is a dark time of year. The world around us seems “dark,” as well; we’ve got climate change, cyber attacks, random violence, global terrorism and more. We are living in a world that feels like the first verse of “The first Nowell the angel did say... on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.” Deep, deep darkness. Remember comedian George Carlin’s line: “When you’re experiencing darkness in your life, pray for God to free you from it. If you are still in darkness ... make sure you’ve paid the electric bill!” Certainly, you will understand that we’re not the first people to face dark days. Hebrew Scriptures present numerous examples. In the prophet Isaiah’s time, about seven hundred years before the birth of Christ, people “walked in THE WORD BECAME darkness ...{and}... lived in a land of FLESH AND LIVED deep darkness ”(9:2); God seemed AMONG US, absent and people saw “only distress AND WE HAVE SEEN HIS and darkness, the gloom of anguish; GLORY! and they were thrust into thick JOHN 1:14A darkness” (8:21-22). We know what this feels like. Anxiety and insecurity about relationships, jobs, Dear Friends in Christ, health, retirement and fear about the future lead us to feel as though we are As we celebrate the wondrous being “thrust into thick darkness.” birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, We need illumination. we continue to pray in hope for The people of ancient Israel looked the promise of peace with justice for a ray of light. “For a child has been that God brings to all. BUILDING OUR F AITH: L OVING CHRIST AND SER VING OUR COMMUNITY FAITH: LO SERVING
FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE
CONTRIBUTIONS WERE MADE TO THE RECTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND most recently by Ruth Poole and Ben Card. These funds extend our Parish’s mission of outreach, providing for such needs as can be helped by financial assistance.
* * * FINANCIAL REPORT Through October 2016, we are $14,298 below our budget. Year-to-date parish net income is $380,488 versus a budget of $404,843. Expenses were on budget. Lower than budget pledge income is the major cause of the shortfall: $260,120 received versus $300,000 budgeted. Please review your third quarter statements and, if possible, bring your pledge up to date. Our plate income is also slightly below budget. Parish center donations are over budget – $63,810 received versus $54,180 budgeted. The Finance Committee is planning the 2017 parish budget. It is not too late to pledge. Our budget for all activities, salaries, outreach, and music, etc. are based upon the pledge we receive. The loan repayment to clear the Building Our Faith loan from 2000 is still under review by the Diocese. We are always in need of tellers to count money after the 10am service. Please consider volunteering for this very important job; call the office and give your name and a phone number where we can reach you. Thank you all for your past generosity to Saint Michael & All Angels. Julie Jenkins, Finance Chairman

he built an automated security system; Californian Jack Andraka who became angry about pancreatic cancer after it killed a family friend, so, bucking conventional wisdom, he developed a protein-based blood test that is much faster, more effective and less expensive than other options. Instead of cursing the darkness these three adolescents lit candles. Says Thurston, “...all while dealing with homework, parents and puberty.” Children are succeeding in making this world a safer, more secure and healthier place. God’s kingdom of justice and righteousness is being advanced one innovation at a time. It’s enough to give us FutureHope. Isaiah predicted Christ’s coming and the Virgin Mary brought him into the world “To show God’s love aright, she bore for us a Savior when half spent was the night” (as the carol “Lo, how a Rose...” tells us;) but his people had to wait more than seven hundred years; that would be like us waiting patiently until the 28th century! The Psalmist (84:10b) witnesses that “justice and peace have kissed each other,” and Jesus offers us that “endless peace” the prophet promised in a challenging and contentious world: “Peace I leave with you; my own peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27) Jesus does not offer us an escape from life’s challenges, but instead gives us peace in the midst of these challenges. Jesus is focused on people being in right-relationship (“righteousness”) with God and with each other. Righteousness (right-relationship) means: loving, giving, just and committed. This is the kind of relationship Jesus has with each of us, and it is the kind that he wants us to have with God and with one another. Our hope for the future is found in Christ Jesus, and in all who follow him in right-relationship and peace-withjustice. Christmas is the season of FutureHope, in which the light of Christ enters the darkness of the world. The birth of Jesus reminds us that children can change things for the better, whether they are designing safer nuclear reactors, developing better
blood tests, or being the One and Only Savior of the world. To those living in deep darkness the Light of Christ is shining, to save us from our mistakes and to lead us in the paths of peacewith-justice and right-relationship. Receive the Light. Accept the Light. Embrace the Light. And then, share the Light in whatever ways you can. You don’t have to build a security system for livestock or broker peace between rival gangs or warring nations, though we are all called to do what we are able. You can visit a lonely relative and/or friend, drive respectfully, shop intelligently, invite a neighbor to church, tutor a troubled teenager, plant a garden in community. Accepting and sharing the Light of Christ is the best present and hope for our future. Jesus is our FutureHope and Jesus is here now among us. Merry Christmas!

Reprinted from the December 2015 issue of “For the Love of Mike”. Lord Jesus, Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. M
y daughter, Elise, and I sat on the steps of the San Buenaventura City Hall on Veterans Day, November 11. It was a sunny day in California and those driving by in convertibles reminded me that others were enjoying the day, too. The San Buenaventura City Hall sits on top of a good sized hill overlooking the surrounding area of shops and downtown Main Street, Ventura. The view of the ocean was before us, the monument to Junipero Serra behind us. We were just resting and enjoying the sunshine after having eaten lunch, when a group of twenty or so protesters came into view. They went once up Main and then turned around and came back. There is something about people shouting repeatedly that draws the attention away from pondering to acute listening and heightened awarenessis it necessary for me to respond? Are things safe right now? Will things get out of hand? Are the words on the poster visible? How am I to respond, if at all? The day before, I had driven from Orange County to Santa Barbara via the 405 freeway, facing the onslaught of traffic by listening to music. I had not considered or focused on what I would face when I got out of the car in Goleta. College campuses are bastions of expression and passions. The opinions ran strong. The referral to postings, texts and blogs was jarring. There had been tears. I was told of the account of the night before and the rally around the UCSB Tower. But this day, the Friday after “Loss Tuesday,” was a day of less conversation and quiet observances. When we received the text from my other daughter, Jacqueline, to make our descent down the San Buenaventura City Hall steps, we came across a woman who was walking in our direction. Elise started a conversation with her. The woman had forgotten that the court house would be closed on this day as it was a holiday. She said she had driven an

With the help of Bonnie Piazza our preschool efforts move steadily forward. The board has been working to gather and prepare documents in support of our application which will be submitted this month. In addition, they are coordinating with Tom Nicholson's Building and Grounds Commission for refreshing our classrooms and developing an "outdoor classroom" within our beautiful natural outdoor spaces. We are on schedule to complete state licensing and begin enrollment for classes that will start in the Fall of 2017! Our thanks to Ray Pentz for his gift that allows us to begin a ministry that will touch the future. Stay tuned!
PLEASE CHECK THE FORWARD MOVEMENT DISPLAY RACK ON THE WALL IN MICHAEL’S ROOM. Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. A donation box is provided. “How to Keep Advent” is a pamphlet that reminds us that the season of Advent is “a time of preparation and anticipation of the birth of Christ.” It gives us the quote from Jerome W. Berryman which is used in our church school curriculum Godly Play: “Sometimes people can go right through a mystery and not even know it is there. The Church knew that the people needed a way to get ready to come close to and enter the Mystery of Christmas. They set aside four weeks to get ready.” Helpful suggestions tell us ways that individuals and families may observe Advent. One way is that we can make our own Advent Wreath. Saint Michael’s follows this tradition by having different families light a candle each Sunday during Advent. You might set up a creche before Christmas, and perhaps put various figures in different places in your home and add them gradually. (Remember that baby Jesus does not appear until Christmas, and that the three kings do not arrive until Epiphany.) Taking time for quiet reflection, remembering to give to those in need, and feeding the hungry are things you might do; other ideas are included in this helpful little booklet, such as making simple gifts and perhaps being an “Advent Fairy” and leaving anonymous simple gifts at someone’s doorstep.

continued from page 4 hour in traffic to get there. Elise suggested that now that she was here, perhaps she could enjoy the day, as it was lovely, warm and scenic. She said yes and that she would be meeting up with her daughters soon. The woman then commented on how proud she was of the young people who engaged in the election. She also said she felt sad for the children having to live through this. This woman’s nationality was different than ours. It was a special time and place for me to be standing there, together with a stranger, having a conversation, she reaching forward, me reaching back. “I am a friend, I am for peace.” Since then I have thought back to what the woman said about the children. And I want to encourage those of us who are around children of elementary school age during the holidays to not underestimate the power of world tumult to filter its way down and over the protective hedge of childhood. I remember my own childhood, and because I started first grade in 19701971, the math is an easy calculation. While growing up, I remember I didn’t particularly find my memories of elementary school in the early 70s very fond. There had been riots and The Vietnam War. I knew there was a conflict going on between adults which was known as “busing” in schools. There was one word said on the news over and over again, “Watergate.” And in the summer after my fourth grade year, I remember hearing the President resign from office. My parents told me
DECEMBER 2016
to listen to the radio, as it was “historic.” It was August 9. Strangely enough, it was the date of my parents’ anniversary. I don’t remember my parents celebrating on this day as was their custom. I only remember hearing Nixon’s voice on the radio and being on a family camping trip somewhere near the Grand Canyon. Christmas in California, the warm and sunny days, just as the rest of the world sees on television with the Rose Parade, I would hope would be a happy time for children. And, if we can’t completely shield children from media, TV, newspaper or social media, that time and consideration would be given to children to discuss what is going on in the political world and why there are such strong emotions held by adults. Taking time to talk to children and see how they are feeling about all the things and events going around them; taking time to teach us to find Jesus in the quiet places of our hearts, and the words that we can say that will help bring peace and understanding to the children. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. John 14:27”

The season of Advent in 2016 begins on Sunday, November 27 and continues through December 24. Advent is a season of joyful waiting and watching for the arrival of God to humanity. This happened once before when Jesus was born, and we look forward to the joys of Christmas. Jesus also promised to come again in power and glory, and so Advent is a time for us to reflect on our readiness to meet him on that day. Here are a few Advent resources that are available on the worldwide web. The urls for each resource can be found at www.standrewsemporia.org/ advent--christmas.html. The O Antiphons The last week of Advent includes a few short prayers called the O Antiphons. They are the basis of the carol "O come, O come, Emmanuel." Daily reading reflections from the Episcopal Church Office of Lifelong Formation Participate in daily discussions and reflections, centered on themes of Advent, happening on all sorts of social media. Forward Movement and SSJE: The brothers have teamed up with Forward Movement to produce 12 mini meditation cards, one for each of the 12 days of Christmas. Each card includes a stunning image on one side, and on the other a brief meditation on faith, peace, gratitude and nine more seasonal themes, written by SSJE brothers. Give these cards to family, friends, parishioners and anyone wishing to create a spiritual practice beyond Christmas Day. You also can include them with your holiday cards or hand them out at the end of your Christmas service. Forward Movement: A new booklet of meditations explores Advent and Christmas through the lens of St. Nicholas and scripture in “From the Holly Jolly to the Holy: Reclaiming the Sacred during Advent and Christmas.” The meditations are written by The Rev’d Jim Rosenthal, president of the UK/USA St. Nicholas Society. Father Rosenthal, who dons the robes of St. Nicholas in celebrations around the world, invites readers to experience the seasons through St. Nicholas the holy, not Santa Claus the jolly. Episcopal Relief and Development: ERD has sent out its annual “Gifts for Life” catalog, which gives people the chance to make a meaningful gift of
7
livestock or other items to people in need around the world. ERD also has produced an Advent toolkit to help parishes and other groups plan, construct and host an Advent campaign to support giving through “Gifts for Life.” CREDO: The group that provides wellness materials for Episcopal clergy is offering a special email subscription for anyone interested in meditations during the Advent and Christmas seasons. The meditations are from noted author The Rev’d Barbara Crafton. Text and audio meditations will arrive by email from the First Sunday in Advent to the Feast of the Epiphany. The series also features Crafton reading her Sunday reflections on video. The short readings and the hymn on each of the six Sundays create an easy-to-lead study series for use at individual churches. Thanks to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Emporia, Kansas for publishing these references.
TIME AND TALENT If you are thinking about volunteering with one of our Commissions at St. Mike’s, please review the “Parish Life” booklet on the back rail of the sanctuary, which describes these activities. We need greeters, acolytes, coffee hosts, and ushers, and have other interesting assignments as well. Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet new people at St. Mike’s. Please call Anne Warmington with questions: 202.550.4100.
* * * PLEASE REMEMBER . . . Saint Michael & All Angels has a Parish Emergency Fund, funded by parishioners and available to parishioners facing financial emergencies and needing economic assistance. Requests should be directed to our rector or any member of our Vestry. If you are able to contribute to this fund, all gifts are welcome!
* * * HELP FOR HUNGRY PEOPLE: We are once again in need of donations for replenishing our food cupboard. Please call Murry McClaren with any questions or to learn what types of food are currently needed. THANK YOU ALL for your help!

CHRISTMAS MUSIC Music was an early feature of the Christmas season. The earliest examples are chants and litanies intended for liturgical use to observe both the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany, many of which are still used by the Eastern Orthodox Church. The 13th century saw the rise of the carol written in the vernacular, under the influence of Francis of Assisi. In the Middle Ages, the English combined circle dances with singing and called them carols. Later, the word carol came to mean a song in which a religious topic is treated in a style that is familiar or festive. From Italy, it passed to France and Germany, and later to England. Christmas carols in English first appear in a 1426 work of John Audelay, a Shropshire priest and poet, who lists 25 "caroles of Cristemas", probably sung by groups of wassailers, who went from house to house. Music in itself soon became one of the greatest tributes to Christmas, and Christmas music includes some of the noblest compositions of the great musicians. During the Commonwealth under Cromwell, the
DECEMBER 2016 8
Rump Parliament prohibited the practice of singing Christmas carols as Pagan and sinful. Like other customs associated with popular Catholic Christianity, it earned the disapproval of Protestant Puritans. Famously, Cromwell's interregnum prohibited all celebrations of the Christmas holiday. The Westminster Assembly of Divines established Sunday as the only holy day in the calendar in 1644. The new liturgy produced for the English church recognised this in 1645, and so legally abolished Christmas. Its celebration was declared an offence by Parliament in 1647. There is some debate as to the effectiveness of this ban, and whether it was enforced. Puritans generally disapproved of the celebration of Christmas—a trend which continually resurfaced in Europe and the US through the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. When in May 1660 Charles II restored the Stuarts to the throne, the people of England once again practiced the public singing of Christmas carols as part of the revival of Christmas customs, sanctioned by
the king's own celebrations. William Sandys's “Christmas Carols Ancient and Modern” (1833), contained the first appearance in print of many now-classic English carols, and contributed to the midVictorian revival of the holiday. Singing carols in church was instituted on Christmas Eve, 1880, (Nine Lessons and Carols), in Truro Cathedral, Cornwall, England, which is now seen in churches all over the world. According to one of the only observational research studies of Christmas caroling, Christmas observance and caroling traditions vary considerably among nations in the 21st century, while the actual sources and meanings of even high-profile songs are commonly misattributed, and the motivations for carol singing can in some settings be as much associated with family tradition and national cultural heritage as with religious beliefs. The tradition of singing Christmas carols in return for alms or charity began in England in the seventeenth century after the Restoration. Town musicians or 'waits' were licensed to collect money in the streets in the weeks preceding Christmas, the custom spread throughout the population by the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries up to the present day.---- from Wikipedia
