BELOVEDS IN CHRIST A great friend and my once-and-future tennis partner, Jeff Rekoon, loves to quote comedian Steve Martin’s story about a man who was asked why he didn’t pay his taxes and responded simply, “I forgot!” I am embarrassed to admit that I sometimes forget “stuff,” where I put my keys, glasses, wallet, calendar. Perhaps we are all a bit forgetful from time to time. This would be comical if it was not so discombobulating. Sometimes, forgetting is anything but humorous because, sometimes, I forget myself: I forget who I am. I forget that God created me and has blessed me beyond my dreams; that Mom and Dad chose me and raised me with tremendous love; that a bishop who looked like Henry VIII laid hands upon my head and proclaimed that I am a priest forever; that Frances loves me and has pledged herself to me and I to her; that God has given us Don! These are among the realities by which I define myself, among the gifts out of which I try to live a life of gratitude. When I forget these realities, even momentarily, I am no longer living in thanksgiving and can become a very different person: self-righteously indignant, shamefully self-centered, relentlessly irritable. When I forget that I am a child of God, the son of Don & Polly Haynes, friends with wonderful people who know me well and love me still, a priest of the church, loved by Jesus, the grateful spouse of Frances, and the thankful Dad of Don, then I am no longer defined and guided by them and my identity is shaped only by whatever momentary outrage happens to cross my path. Lent is a time for remembering. It is that season specially set aside to give us space to remember who we are, how we came to be here, and what we have been called to do. It is time to remember that God so loves this world that he gives his only son so that we will not perish but may have eternal life (John 3:16) so that you and I can be children of God and heirs of God’s Kingdom. As Christians, our defining moment is the passion and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We forget it at our own peril, because when we forget it, we forget ourselves as well. Giving up “stuff” or taking on Lenten discipline will do us little good if we don’t remember why we do what we do. On Ash Wednesday we hear, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return ” Continued on page 3

* * * CONTRIBUTIONS WERE MADE TO THE RECTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND most recently by John and the Wikle family in thanksgiving for Ellen; by Myrna and the Ireland family in thanksgiving for John; by Charles & Rita Cole in gratitude for ministry; and by TJ & Alissa Byers Leason in thanksgiving for the celebration and blessing of their marriage. These funds extend our Parish’s mission of outreach, providing for such needs as can be helped by financial assistance.

* * * ROSE GARDEN UPDATE: Many thanks to many folks for supporting Saint Michael’s Rose Garden, and for sharing your memories of family, friends, and the love of roses. With the help of your donations, we were able to plant six new bushes this year: Mr. Lincoln (deep red), Henry Fonda (vibrant yellow), Double Delight (red and white), Blue Girl (lavender), Twilight Zone (deep purple), and Dark Night (deep red with ivory underside). I hope to spread mulch in the next few weeks. As always, all are invited to become involved in the care and maintenance of the rose garden (KarleneMiller@gmail.com). If you are not able to physically help, donations for food, disease/pest spray, and mulch are always welcome. Please identify your wishes by writing “Rose Garden” on your donations and include any special celebrations or memorials in a note, so that your gift can be properly acknowledged. --Karlene Miller

WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP meets the last Tuesday of the month and is effectively using our subscription to ChurchNext as the study focus. Beth Bianchi provides her home and coordinates the study session each month.

* * * PLEASE CHECK THE FOREWARD MOVEMENT DISPLAY RACK ON THE WALL IN MICHAEL’S ROOM. Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. The pamphlet “The Ashes of Lent” has been reprinted many times. The author looked forward to attending Ash Wednesday services as a child. He did not understand what ashes meant, and mortality and sin were beyond his comprehension. I quote his eloquent conclusion and hope that it will aid you in understanding the meaning of Ash Wednesday. “The ashes of Lent are the sign of our mortal bodies and the reminder that God has turned death to ashes. They are the memorial of our sin and the proof that Christ has beaten down Satan under his feet. They are the evidence of our dying and the hope of our living in him. In this holy season, confess your sins and stand in the fire of Christ’s glory. Let his Majesty rule you, his Spirit purge you and the fire of his Love make you his own forever.”

Father in Heaven, the light of your truth bestows sight to the darkness of sinful eyes. May this season of repentance bring us the blessing of Your forgiveness and the gift of Your light. Grant this through Christ our Lord.

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE

Rector’s Desk from page 1 In other words: Remember who you are. Remember your place in the cosmos. Remember your mortality and, so, your need for God. When we do not remember, we lose the best part of ourselves and are in the gravest danger. When we forget, we are reduced to the lowest human common denominator and are without the grace of God. And this is not a pretty picture! Lent provides us with opportunities to remember and to discover. To observe a Holy Lent we must be willing to set aside some time each day to remember who we are, to discover who we are; to remember who God is, to discover who God is; to appreciate anew all God is willing to do to secure our salvation. When we know who we are, then we can be who we are. We can be true to ourselves and true to God. Forgetting where I left my keys is one thing. Forgetting myself is quite another! Lent is a time to remember and to discover. I invite you to a Holy Lent.

Yours, In Christ -

FINANCE COMITTEE REPORT We are pleased to report that 2016 finished with a surplus of $11,840. At the February 5th Annual Meeting, the 2017 balanced budget was approved with revenues and expenses equal to $484,500. One month into 2017, revenues exceeded expenses for a surplus of $12,900, primarily due to parishioners accelerating their pledge payments into January. The month-end financial statements are posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Center. The Finance Committee for 2017 is Melinda Rader, Stacie Tibbetts, Jim Palda, Craig Kennedy, Matt Shaw, Norris Battin and Larry Casey (Chair). We sure could use some help with tellers after the 10am worship service. The work involves counting cash and preparing a bank deposit slip. If you are interested, please call the office at 949-6440463 and leave your name and a phone number where we can reach you. Thank you all for your generosity to Saint Michael & All Angels. Larry Casey Finance Committee Chair

A GREAT GIFT FOR FAMILY & FRIENDS

Our parish history, “A Celebration of 50 Years,” is available for $15 from Lulu Press bit.ly/SMAAhistory. Twenty percent of the purchase price supports our parish budget. Every Saint Michael's family should have a copy of our history -51 pages of text, color photographs, and historical tables. Excerpts of the book are available at the parish website: www. stmikescdm.ladiocese.org.

Pre-School Update On behalf of the board of the preschool, we wanted to thank everyone for their support and encouragement after Melinda Rader ’s presentation at the Annual Meeting. We also wanted to give the parish an idea of our time line and class sizes. The pre-school budget is not part of the Annual Parish Budget. It is supported through donations as designated gifts. The intent from the beginning would be that the pre-school would have to support itself. Beyond the consultant, the donated funds have been used to paint the gym and classrooms, clean the carpets in four classrooms, and to file our license request with the state. In order to get our license, we will be updating the classrooms and playground. In addition, there are several fire safety issues that have to be completed. Once that is done, the state will be on-site to visit the facility before issuing the license. As you might imagine the state wants the facility and curriculum to be ready the day they issue the license. Our goal is to have our license by the end of March. We are licensing three of our six classrooms for 10 children each ages, 2,3 and 4. We are planning for both morning and afternoon sessions that would begin in the fall. Once our license is issued (beginning of April), we will be conducting tours and open houses of the facility and starting pre-enrollment for the fall. During the late spring and summer we are planning on a Parent and Child class in order to interest families in the facility and preschool. We are so excited to see the hopes of so many people over the years become reality. We are such a blessed parish who live in such a blessed part of the world. Our mission is to share God’s love and beauty with the “children who will lead us!!” Jim Palda on behalf of the pre-school board of direcrors

PRAYERS HEALING

Wearing a Cross I think Episcopalians are good about wearing their crosses. Now, this can be taken on two levels, one as jewelry and one as burdens. But I will initially write about my thoughts on wearing a cross as jewelry before I get to the thought of burdens. The cross necklace is symbolic in nature, of an attachment to Christ, of a faith, and a religious sign that one believes in the power of the resurrection. If we wore a Crucifix, we would be thinking more about the bodily suffering of our Savior, but with the empty cross, we think about his risen state. The empty cross, like the empty tomb, tells all that we are not defeated. We believe in a place called Heaven and an afterlife where Christ reigns. Chi Rho. It has been many years since I have daily worn a necklace with a cross. Not that I don’t have them in my jewelry box or hanging from my rear view mirror. I have several, and they have come from different sources confirmation, or from friends as birthday gifts, and so forth. But I haven’t worn a cross in particular, because I am not usually a necklace wearer. Also, I have found that when I wear a cross, strangers seem to speak to me differently. Their facial expression or tone of voice can reflect that they are thinking, “Oh, she is religious.” I am not too anxious for the punch. Yet on the other hand, I know that I can miss the blessings. For those strangers who I meet who have an affinity for the symbolic nature of the cross as jewelry can soften their view of me, whether in the checkout line in the grocery store, or with a teller at a bank. There are words of kindness that flow. The symbolism of the cross speaks many languages and can overcome many barriers. And now, to the topic of cross as burden. For me, 2016 seemed to have had more crosses and burdens than usual. Because of my 2016 journey, I am more inclined to wear my cross necklace in 2017. Seemingly, because Continued on page 7

FIVE THINGS TO DO DURING LENT

D

o you love Lent? I do, but a lot of folk don't have all that much affection for the season. Many Christians have come to think of it in negative terms. However, Lent is not about hair shirts, solemn countenances and the like. Rather, it is a positive, strengthening, lovely spiritual experience, and if you want to grow in your love of God and your neighbor, then Lent is for you! Here are five things to do with single-mindedness this Lent which, if you do them, will give you a clearer vision of the Risen Christ, come Easter. Fasting and Abstinence: The biggest problem we moderns have with fasting and abstinence is one of confusion; that is, we don't really understand them. The priest gets up and talks about what they mean, and when he's done, people are more confused than they were when he started. So, here's a simplified elucidation of fasting and abstinence: Abstinence lowers the quality of food (usually by not eating meat) and fasting lowers the quantity, and usually means not more than a light breakfast, one full meal, and one half meal daily each fast day. Therefore, the rule is "keep it smaller and keep it simpler." Smaller portions of food, and simpler menus. Don't eat so much during Lent. Not because you necessarily have to lose weight, but because the practice will give you strength in your spiritual life by weakening the attractions of the sensate pleasures. Fasting makes the waistline shrink and the heart get larger, and abstinence makes the heart grow fonder. Indulge in both fasting and abstinence during Lent and you will have a clearer vision of the Risen Christ, come Easter. Praying: For the forty days of Lent, start and end each day with prayer. Read Morning and Evening Prayer and/or Family Prayer. Dust off that old grace you used to say before eating spend some table time in quiet reflection and prayer instead of chattering and chomping. Pray daily, making sure you indulge in all the qualities of Christian prayer adoration, thanksgiving, petition, penitence, and invocation. Pray daily, and you will have a clearer vision of the Risen Christ, come Easter.

MARCH 2017

Bible Reading: Do this daily, also, and if you haven't availed yourself of reading the Daily Office of morning and evening prayer, you are missing out on the opportunity the Church has given you for daily study and reading of Holy Writ. There's solace, insight, encouragement, grace and a whole lot more in scripture, and that can't be said about any other book in your library. The Good Book is precisely that, and those who read it daily learn how to be good - godly - themselves. You can read the Bible daily via the Ordo Kalendar's links, or you can avail yourself of the innumerable publications available on episcopalnet.org via paper and electronic books on the Daily Office regimen. Read Holy Writ daily, and you will have a clearer vision of the Risen Christ, come Easter. Corporate Worship: Corporate worship is a basic Christian duty. Our prayer book puts it succinctly, telling us that part of our bounden duty is to worship God every Sunday in his Church. Doing so brings us understanding, strengthens our faith, gives us hope, fills us with encouragement, and gives us the firsthand experience of being loved by God - and that gives us the ability to love others more fully. There is nothing we can do on Sunday morning that is more important than being in God's House and being fed by His grace-filled presence in the Blessed Sacrament. Make a commitment not to miss one single Sunday in God's House this Lenten season. Jesus told us to this do, (Luke 22:19; 1Cor 11:24-25) so let's do it together, every single Sunday, and you will have a clearer vision of the Risen Christ, come Easter. Works of Mercy: The final step is to, as the prayer says, do all such good works as ... [God]...has prepared for us to walk in. There are fourteen 'works" which enable us to put our faith in Christ into action in our life. They are both spiritual and temporal and are as follows: Spiritual Works Of Mercy (1) converting the sinner, (2) instructing the ignorant, (3) counseling the doubtful, (4) comforting the sorrowful, (5) bearing wrongs patiently, (6) forgiving injuries, (7) praying for the living and the dead.

6

Corporal Works Of Mercy (1) feeding the hungry, (2) giving drink to the thirsty, (3) clothing the naked, (4) harboring the stranger, (5) visiting the sick, (6) ministering to prisoners, (7) burying the dead. Finally, and no doubt most importantly, let your Lenten lapses and failures - whatever they may be serve only to increase your dependence upon God. None of us will do all we want to do during Lent. That's the human condition. The point is not to get a good grade; the point is to increase your capacity to love God and your neighbor. After all, Lent is a time to learn how to love - God's way - once again. That's the whole point of the season! +Davis McMannes © 1997 - 2014 episcopalnet.org

Susan Caldwell Continued from page 4 of these difficulties, I am not so put off by the scorn or judgment passed by those who may see my necklace piece. I am more able to share with Jesus in his arduous journey of the Via Dolorosa. I can identify. I can take up my cross and follow him. There were loved ones who passed in 2016 that I miss. If not daily, but frequently, I think about the drought of six years in California. The fruit trees that died in my parent’s backyard. I give thanks for the rain. The growth of the trees and flowers and grass. And the new fruit trees that will be planted. There were other difficulties in 2016 that I do not wish to repeat again. So I wear my cross, as it is a reminder to me that I have suffered and I must continue to work hard at life. Alongside my cross, I have a pendant that is the Tree of Life. I like the fact that they are together. So, in this springtime and Lenten season, may we set our gaze toward the narrow path that winds up the steady inclined hill, placing the Cross at the forefront and knowing that Christ on his earthly sojourn has gone before us. For the message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18

For the Parish Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for this parish family. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. --BCP page 816

NORM EWERS Saint Patrick, Bishop and Missionary of Ireland, c.390

P

atrick was born into a Christian family somewhere on the northwest coast of Britain in about 390. His grandfather had been a Christian priest and his father, Calpornius, a deacon. Calpornius was an important official in the late Roman imperial government of Britain. It was not unusual in this post-Constantinian period for such state officials to be in holy orders. When Patrick was about sixteen, he was captured by a band of Irish slave-raiders. He was carried off to Ireland and forced to serve as a shepherd. When he was about twenty-one, he escaped and returned to Britain, where he was educated as a Christian. He tells us that he took holy orders as both presbyter and bishop, although no particular see is known as his at this time. A vision then called him to return to Ireland. This he did about the year 432. Tradition holds that Patrick landed not far from the place of his earlier captivity, near what is now known as Downpatrick (a “down” or “dun” is a fortified hill, the stronghold of a local Irish king). He then began a remarkable process of missionary conversion throughout the country that continued until his death, probably in 461. He made his appeal to the local kings and through them to their tribes. Christianizing the old pagan religion as he went, Patrick erected Christian churches over sites already regarded as sacred, had crosses carved on old druidic pillars, and put sacred wells and springs under the protection of Christian saints. Many legends of Patrick’s Irish missionary travels possess substrata of truth, especially those telling of his conversion of the three major Irish High Kings. At Armagh, he is said to have established his principal church. To this day, Armagh is regarded as the primatial see of all Ireland. Two works are attributed to Patrick: an autobiographical Confession, in which he tells us, among other things, that he was criticized by his contemporaries for lack of learning, and a Letter to Coroticus, a British chieftain. The Lorica or St. Patrick’s Breastplate (“I bind unto myself today”) is probably not his, but it expresses his faith and zeal. (Ref. Lesser Feasts and Fasts . 1997)
