...From the Desk of the Rector (This letter appeared here last June. It seems even more important this November 8th.)

PRAYING OUR GOODBYES SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 5PM

BELOVEDS IN CHRIST “Vote your hopes not your fears!” So I’ve said every election year during my tenure as your rector. In this last important election year in which I will be your rector I want to add, “Voting is an act of faith that can be a spiritual practice.” It’s easy to feel discouraged with all the challenges our United States faces, but as people of faith we know we have to work toward a better future for all. Why do we spend time and energy going to our polling place on, or voting by mail before, June 7 and November 8 when our individual vote is unlikely to be the deciding factor in local, state, or federal elections? Because we have responsibilities to the common good that cannot be done in isolation. Voting is clearly not the only way we are supposed to live out our faith, but it certainly is a foundation for showing our dedication to each other. The physical acts involved in voting -- learning about the issues, talking with family and friends about the candidates, going to the polls, filling out the ballots -- solidify our spiritual commitment to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus’ teachings are intended to make us aware of our connections with, and responsibilities to, others; they call us to engage with the world around us with the hope of transforming it. This is “political,” as our word comes from the Greek “politicos” which means “of, for, or relating to citizens.” Politics is the Continued on page 3

DR. RAY URWIN, HOMILIST CHOIR SPECIAL READINGS CONGREGATIONAL HYMNS God has given us each other to help us in this journey we call life. We can grow, learn, and find support from one another. If you have lost a loved one, beloved pet, or job, experienced something in life which has brought sadness and difficulty, or know someone who has suffered such a loss, please attend this very special worship at Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church.

ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13th. Plan now for our annual event. Your favorite places to find gifts for family and friends will be there, plus the opportunity to support many different outreach projects with your gift-giving, such as Free Wheel Chair Mission, Habitat for Humanity, Heifer Project, and Loaves & Fishes. And Michael's Market, featuring your handmade items for sale, will be returning again. So, please start thinking about how you can participate and put this date on your calendar! Please call Barbara Stewart+ with ideas and offers to help. 714.949.7449

SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE! SET UP DIRECT GIVING TO SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS: Pledge payments can now be scheduled using web banking. You can set up regular, recurring payments for your annual pledge and leave your checkbook at home on Sundays. This payment method is completely optional. You can continue to place pledge envelopes in the collection plates if you wish (empty or with a note saying you gave on-line). Note that regular, recurring payments help the church maintain a healthy cash flow, especially useful during the summer months when many are on vacation. For details and instructions call Marybeth Waniek, our bookkeeper, in the parish office 949.644.0463, Ext. 15. She will be happy to help you simplify your life!

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE

CONTRIBUTIONS WERE MADE to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund most recently by Doreen Villars in gratitude for ministry with residents at Regent’s Point; by Mike & Lynda McDonald in thanksgiving for the celebration and blessing of their marriage; and by Clyde Dodge, Corinne Stover, Judy Brady, Marcia Commins, Frank Olson and Dori Rodi-Shryock, and Bob & Dottie Cole. These funds extend our Parish’s mission of outreach, providing for such needs as can be helped by financial assistance.

* * * FINANCE REPORT: Through September 2016 parish net income is $41,810 below our nine-month projected budget with unpaid pledge income accounting for $31,492 of the deficit. Plate income is also below budget while parish center donations exceed their budget. Third quarter contribution statements have been distributed to parishioners. Please review the status of your pledge. We are also working on the 2017 budget which is based on 2017 pledges from parishioners. Please return your pledge cards as soon as you can. We hope to increase several Vestry commission budgets and also increase our contribution to the Diocese for Mission Outreach. The Diocese is reviewing our proposal to retire debt incurred in 2000 for the Building Our Faith campaign using a portion of our endowment fund, which is administered by the Diocese. We always need Tellers to count money after the 10am service. Please consider volunteering for this very important job. Thank you for your generosity to Saint Michael & All Angels. -- Julie Jenkins, Finance Chairman

PLEASE CHECK THE FORWARD MOVEMENT DISPLAY RACK ON THE WALL IN MICHAEL’S ROOM. Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. A donation box is provided. For this month: “The Church for a Changing World” pamphlet was written by Phyllis Tickle in collaboration with Forward Movement editors. It explores the meaning of “Emergence Christianity.” This phenomenon “is hard to define because it is neither a cohesive movement nor a denomination with a set of agreed-upon doctrines.” The Church of England “uses the term ‘Fresh Expressions’ to describe new forms of faith for a changing culture.” Tickle reminds us that “roughly every five hundred years since its inception, the church has undergone major upheavals.” Many different forms the church is taking today include Hyphenateds, Missionals, NeoMonastics, and House Church.

process of making uniform decisions applying to all our neighbors. Voting is political. And, voting is a moral obligation. Voting is a spiritual practice if ... if it is done with compassionate intentions. As an undergraduate sociology major I was assigned “Define religion?” I wrote: “Religion, or what societies hold to be sacred, comprises an institutionalized system of symbols, beliefs, values, and practices focused on questions of ultimate meaning.” Voting is religious when we bring our ultimate beliefs and values with us into the voting booth. Spiritual morality informed by the symbols and practices of our faith is not a costume that we take on and off. We live and breathe our spiritual morality as the breath of God breathing divine inspiration into us to live for and to vote for justice and radical (remembering that “radical” “I am about to do a new thing; means “roots,” “getting to all that is now it springs forth, essential”) love. do you not perceive it?” “Love... is creative, redemptive, understanding, good will for all … Isaiah 43:19 people,” said The Rev’d Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When love loves ...Ruth Poole deeply, madly, truly, it is a fearless love. When we vote with this depth of care for our sister and brother ST. MIKE’S COMMUNICATIONS human beings, when we vote out of COMMISSION is looking for deep regard for the well-being of our volunteers to help in the parish’s nation and of our world, when we marketing, advertising, and public vote out of respect for the blessing relations efforts. Please contact Norris of being citizens of this great country, Battin at nbattin+SMAA@gmail.com when we vote with radical love, then or 949.500.2442 if interested. our vote is more than political. It is a * * * true religious act. Vote as a person of Christian faith. PHONE TREE MINISTRY: NEW Vote your hopes not your fears. Vote! MEMBERS NEEDED. Our goal is to contact every parishioner by phone once a month. This is a great opportunity to Yours, In Christ get to know others better and to share information, needs and suggestions about Saint Mike's. Please contact Ruth Poole at 949.644.9263.

Our parish history,“A Celebration of 50 Years,” is available for $15 from Lulu Press bit.ly/SMAAhistory. Twenty percent of the purchase price supports our parish budget. Every Saint Michael's family should have a copy of our history -- 51 pages of text, color photographs, and historical tables. It’s also a splendid gift for relatives and friends. Excerpts of the book are published on the parish website: www. stmikescdm.ladiocese.org. TIME AND TALENT If you are thinking about volunteering with one of our Commissions at St. Mike’s, please review the “Parish Life” booklet on the back rail of the sanctuary, which describes these activities. We need greeters, acolytes, coffee hosts, and ushers, and have other interesting assignments as well. Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet new people at St. Mike’s. Please call Anne Warmington with questions: 202.550.4100.

T

he autumn season in California is unique; the crisp coolness in the air settles in earlier and the sun sets in a worn-out way. The days are dusty as we start to turn the corner toward the holidays, but not before cherishing the last, lingering days of daylight-saving time. It is a unique time in the calendar, this space between summer and winter, this time of autumn and in-gathering the harvest, with harvest moons so large one would think it might be another planet. Those of the Jewish faith celebrate and delight in Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and maybe building a sukkah. Our children enjoy the Cavalcade of Saints every year at the end of October. At the beginning of November is the All Saints/All Souls Feast Day. Saint Michael’s yearly grief and loss worship service, Praying Our Good Byes, will take place at 5pm this year in the sanctuary on Sunday, November 6th. Our special guest homilist is Dr. Ray Urwin, and music will be provided by our choir as well as guest instrumentalists. All Saints Day is a time when we reflect about those who have died recently or those of our faith who have gone before us. We try to honor and think about the loved ones dear to us who have passed. It is also a time to think of eternity, our shared life with God, our mortality and the new life to come. One of our very littlest angels at Saint Michael’s, fiveyear-old Olivia Shaw, put it so very well, “Heaven is where we go to see our friends.” I think she has a good theology. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” John 14:1-3. Jesus enters heaven with us in mind. In a self-care handbook that I thought to be very helpful, “Working through Grief,” the authors give insight and practical steps to take in grief work. When a certain amount of grief work has been done, then there is personal growth and hope. Allowing oneself to grieve is an important part of the process. Continued on page 6

SAINT MICHAEL’S PRESCHOOL UPDATE – BEGINNING THE NEXT 50 YEARS By Jim Palda “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord”. --Psalm 127:3 “And whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me”. -- Matthew 18:5 On behalf of the Saint Michael’s Episcopal Preschool board of directors, we want to update the parish on the progress we have made to date. As many of you know, we have earnestly been looking into establishing a pre-school for many years. Thanks to a gracious and wonderful gift from a parishioner, that reality is happening!! We determined a while back that our facility would meet the state requirements and all that was needed was an administrator to submit our application to obtain a license. That was the hurdle. But thanks to this gift, we are able to fund the cost of an administrator for the first year. In addition, Mary Beth, our bookkeeper, suggested that we contact Bonnie Piazza, the owner of Piazza Childcare Solutions. The Board met with Bonnie in early September and we determined that she would be able to evaluate our facility, submit and complete our application to the State, and act as our interim administrator. What a surprise to all of us. Bonnie also indicated that she would be able to complete this process so we could be licensed by the beginning of January 2017!! We will now be able to accept applications at the beginning of 2017 for our first classes in the fall of 2017. Board members are Chair Melinda Rader, Vice Chair Jill Faller; Treasurer Jim Palda, and Secretary Louise Stover. Other Board members are Barbara Black, Anne Conover, Susan Caldwell, Anne Warmington, and Sandi Ames. Our Mission Statement incorporates the values, hopes, and dreams that we have in the future of our church and our community: “The Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal preschool is a faith-based, family-orientated, developmental preschool for all children from 3-6 years of age. We believe every child has God given gifts and abilities and our school’s curriculum is designed to develop and foster those gifts. We also believe God’s human family is the foundation upon which a child can grow in love. As is the Episcopal tradition, our arms embrace all children and families as we make Christ and his love the center of our school.” <

A REMINDER FROM YOUR SMAA COMMUNICATIONS TEAM. There are several options available to you to publicize your ministry or event throughout the SMAA community: this newsletter, our Facebook Page (facebook.com/ SMAACDM), the weekly Sunday bulletin, the spoken word at announcement time, or even an email to our “digital parishioners.” Contact Norris Battin for the newsletter and Facebook, Susan Beechner for the bulletin and email, and Fr. Haynes for announcements (nbattin@gmail.com, sbeechner@stmikescdm.org, and phaynes@stmikescdm.org.)

UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world.

Christian Ed from page 4 The “Working through Grief” handbook makes several suggestions regarding the holidays. The booklet has written understandable and practical ways to cope. One observance is that “Holidays and some other times can be harder than others. But with some planning, you can make them less upsetting and perhaps give them new meaning. Even though you may be feeling grief reactions at this holiday season, that doesn’t mean you are not healing. Give yourself permission to stray from holiday traditions if it will be of help. Nothing says that you have to observe events the way you always have. Eat out or change the menu if you don’t feel like making the traditional meal. Go somewhere else if your usual place of celebration will be upsetting. Invite people, especially supportive people, to join you for the special event. Remember you can always return to your traditions later.” “Working through Grief,” a Channing Bete publication, suggests: • One way to remember and or honor your loved one, is to make or buy a decoration in memory of them. • Ask that a service, reading, or song be dedicated to him or her at your place of worship. • Take a trip to a place that was special to you and your loved one. • Help others by spending a day volunteering for a community project. Praying Our Goodbyes is not only a time to memorialize and think of those who have died; it is also a time to sit in community with sorrows that are troubling -- be it a job loss, illness, death of a pet, divorce, family relations, or relocations. God is near to his people and to the broken hearted. <

A Prayer for Guidance Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP Page 100)

Let’s have a look at the current national trends in social media. According to the well-regarded Pew Research Center, 65% of American adults use social networking sites, up from 7% when Pew began tracking social media usage in 2005. An analysis of 27 national surveys over the past decade documents the dramatic spread of technology. During this time, social media usage has grown among some groups that were not among the earliest adopters, including older Americans. Across demographic groups, a number of trends emerge: -- Age differences: young adults (ages 18 to 29) are the most likely to use social media - fully 90% do. Still, usage among those 65 and older has more than tripled since 2010 when 11% used social media. Today, 35% of all those 65 and older report using social media, compared with just 2% in 2005. -- Gender differences: Women and men use social media at similar rates — women were more likely than men to use social networking sites for a number of years, although since 2014 these differences have been modest. Today, 68% of all women use social media, compared with 62% of all men. -- Socio-economic differences: Those with higher education levels and household income lead the way. Over the past decade, higher-income households were more likely to use social media. More than half (56%) of those living in the lowest-income households now use social media, though growth has leveled off in the past few years. With regard to education, those with at least some college experience have been consistently more likely than those with a high school degree or less to use social media over the past decade. 2013 was the first year that more than half of those with a high school diploma or less used social media. -- Racial and ethnic similarities: There are not notable differences by racial or ethnic group: 65% of whites, 65% of Hispanics and 56% of AfricanAmericans use social media today. -- Community differences: more than half of rural residents now use social media. Those living in rural areas are less

likely than those in suburban and urban communities to use social media, a pattern consistent over the past decade. Today, 58% of rural residents, 68% of suburban residents, and 64% of urban residents use social media. Pew Research Center reports on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn, as well as social media usage on mobile devices in general can be found at: http: // www.pewinternet.org/topics/socialnetworking/. So how should we communicate? I’m interested to learn how our parish uses social media so that we can tailor our communications to our usage patterns. I’m developing a survey of our social media usage and hope to get it to you shortly. If anyone would like to help with this research, please let me know at nbattin@gmail.com.< DIGITAL NOTES The parish website address is now www.stmikescdm.ladiocese.org. The previous site, while still accessible and seemingly indestructable, offers no current information. It’s all on the new site. Our Facebook pages have been redesigned (by Facebook) and are easier to navigate than before: www.facebook.com/SMAACDM andw w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / SMAAdailymike/timeline. OUR DIGITAL MINISTRY CAN ALWAYS USE MORE EXPERIENCED VOLUNTEERS. Clyde Dodge could use some assistance in maintaining our website – we’re running to keep up – and we always can use photographs of parish events for the Instagram page. An additional reporter or two for “For the Love of Mike” would help keep the copy fresh. If you are interested, please drop me a note at nbattin@stmikescdm.org. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CONNECTIONS? We are upgrading our parish computers and need to go shopping. Please contact Norris Battin, nbattin@gmail.com, if you have a contact with a computer vender who might offer favorable or not for profit pricing -- for both hardware and software.

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE Come, Ye Thankful People, Come

"Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" is an English Christian harvest festival hymn written in 1844 by Henry Alford. He wrote the hymn while he was rector of Aston in Buckinghamshire, England. It was first published in “Hymns and Songs” in 1844 with seven verses under the title “After Harvest” and set to the hymn tune “St. George, Windsor” in 1885. Alford revised the hymn, and it was republished in his “Poetical Works” with only four verses. In 1861 there were a number of unofficial revisions of the hymn which led Alford to publish a footnote stating his disapproval of these revisions made without his agreement. Despite this, Alford revised the hymn again in 1867 in “Year of Praise”. “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” is Alford’s only hymn. The hymn later gained popularity in the United States as part of Thanksgiving celebrations, and may be found at Hymn 290 in our hymnal. The first verse is written as a celebration of the harvest; the last two

verses are based on the parable of the tares and discuss the last harvest at the second coming of Jesus. 1. Come, ye thankful people, come, Raise the song of harvest home All is safely gathered in, Ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, doth provide For our wants to be supplied; Come to God's own temple, come; Raise the song of harvest home. 2. All the world is God's own field, Fruit unto his praise to yield; Wheat and tares together sown, Unto joy or sorrow grown: First the blade, and then the ear, Then the full corn shall appear; Grant, O harvest Lord, that we Wholesome grain and pure may be.

4. Even so, Lord, quickly come to thy final harvest-home; Gather thou thy people in, Free from sorrow, free from sin; There, forever purified, In thy presence to abide; Come, with all thine angels, come, Raise the glorious harvest home. -- Lyrics in Public Domain Notes from Wikepedia A rendition of “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come” by the National Cathedral Choir is here: http://bit.ly/ 2dZzPrL We will celebrate Thanksgiving 2016 on Thursday, November 24th at 10am. Come join us in gratitude!

3. For the Lord our God shall come, And shall take his harvest home; From His field shall in that day All offenses purge away, Give his angels charge at last In the fire the tares to cast; But the fruitful ears to store In his garner evermore.
