...From the Desk of the Rector

BELOVEDS IN CHRIST Our worship on the first Sunday in October is one of my very favorites every year because we bless critters, all animals, honoring Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi, patron saints of pets. We have blessed a horse, a turtle, an iguana, a tarantula, snakes, ant farms, fish in bowls, hamsters, rabbits, bunnies, chickens, stuffed (toy) animals, pictures of pets, cats and dogs. Dogs! My favorite, from the dachshund of my childhood named “Ginger” who my Dad buried at the Los Angeles Pet Cemetery in Calabasas ...to my fraternity’s golden labrador mix dog “Sally’ who had all three of her litters in the closet in my room and her puppy “Sol” (for “Solomon”) who went with me to seminary in Cambridge ...to “Harvey” (A.K.C. name: “Happy Hairy Harvey Haynes”), a golden retriever who returned with me from Cambridge to California and whose ashes are on my desk at home awaiting burial mixed with my own ...to “Luke,” our ten-year old golden retriever who I rejoice that our staff encourages me to bring to our Parish Office on most days. Question: Why do I so love dogs? Answer: It’s impossible for me not to feel this way. The bond between humans and dogs is more intense than our bond with any other species; is there even a close second? Dogs were the first domesticated animals, the ones that made domestication of all others possible. Scientists can’t agree whether it was 10,000 or 100,000 years ago, but it’s inarguable that dogs evolved from wolves because of human beings. We selected and honed them to be our companions — to help us hunt, to guard our homes, to look after our livestock and even our children, and, over time, to do so many useful and wonderful things that it boggles the mind. For all the talk about wheels and metal and gunpowder, we often overlook what most importantly helped lead us out of caves and into societies: our dogs! We have dogs that serve in combat (a Navy SEAL-trained canine famously assisted in the capture of Osama bin Laden), dogs that detect bugs, dogs that defend sheep from wolves (and cattle from cheetahs), in processes protecting wild animals from illegal hunting, dog lifeguards, dogs that guide the blind and allow the disabled to live better lives, dogs that sniff our cancer and drugs and invasive species. There seems to be no job dogs have been asked to do that they haven’t figured out how to do capably; if only they had thumbs we’d probably have taught them to drive us around by now. And dogs that simply provide companionship, making millions of lives around the globe much, much happier. Every day our scientific knowledge about these amazing animals increases, enabling us to better understand the very magic that dogs have over most Continued on page 3

“GOD THE GIVER” STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF BEGINS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4TH!

O

ver the next six weeks, we will explore together how acknowledging God’s generosity to us can unleash greater generosity in ourselves. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, in his book, “In God’s Hands,” says, “This is a God who intervenes on our behalf, not because we deserve it, but because God’s love is freely given. It is grace. It is not earned; it cannot be earned. It does not need to be earned.” God is the Giver, the Ultimate lover of all God has created. Your generosity, in response to all God has given you, generates mission and changes lives. You will receive your pledge card in the mail. Pray over what your pledge will be over the next six weeks. Send in your pledge card or bring your pledge card to worship on or before Sunday, November 8th. Beginning on Sunday, October 4, and continuing through Sunday, November 8, you will find reflections written by Episcopal stewardship leaders across the country, covering stewardship and faithful giving in connection with the Gospel reading of the day in your worship bulletin. We have set a goal of receiving 100% of pledge commitments from our worshipping community! Thank you for joining me as we consider God’s gifts to each of us. May our exploration open us to a deeper gratitude. Matt Shaw, Stewardship Commissioner

OCTOBER 2015

PARISH FINANCIAL REPORT Our Income through September 15, 2015, is $375, 936. The Year to Date Expense is $400,072. While our expenses are outpacing our income, this was expected; in fact the budgeted “loss” was anticipated to be <$32,596> and the actual “loss” was less at <$24,136>. Pledges and donations are lower than expected, but the increase in Parish Center Donations offset this decline. Hopefully the decline is seasonal, due to vacations and those being out of town. Expenses were lower than budgeted by about $7,100, being the main reason for the betterthan budget Net Income performance. Statements will be mailed after the books close at the beginning of October. Please check to see if you are current with your Pledge. FYI: The current Profit and Loss Statement and the current Balance Sheet are always posted on the bulletin board in Michael’s Room They are there to give you up-to-date information. Finally, WE STILL NEED TELLERS! Julie Jenkins, Finance Chairman

Rector’s Desk from page 1 humans. What exactly makes canines so malleable is not yet fully understood but the reality that the species was truly born at our side helps explain why they seem to understand us at a level that’s sometimes spiritual, and always good! Recent research shows they can read our facial expressions and pick up subtle cues that even toddlers can’t. Science says that dogs love people. Clearly they are always deliriously ecstatic to see you. Any dog’s person has experienced moments in which it seems clear that there is an almost extrasensory frequency by which our two species communicate. What dog’s person hasn’t returned home after a difficult day to find his/her dog immediately understanding, and offering a little extra love as a result. W.H. Auden was right: “In dark hours their silence may be of more help than many twolegged comforters.” Dogs always love, ever-reminding us of Whose name D.O.G spells backwards. And, the best part of this relationship is how simple it is. While we often ask so much of them, they require almost nothing in return. You can ask your dog to retrieve a tennis ball, catch a Frisbee, take a nap on the couch, herd some sheep, or run around a show ring and s/he’ll do it, happily, for hours on end. S/He only wants to be fed and told s/he’s good and, most of all, loved. If your dog is loved, they really need little else. Aha, maybe they are even more like us than we’ve imagined.

Yours, In Christ -

And, here are my favorite questions dogs might well ask God “Is it on purpose that our names are the same, only reversed?” “When we get to heaven, can we sit on your couch? Or is it still the same old story?” “Why are there cars named after the jaguar, the cougar, the mustang, the colt, the stingray, and the rabbit, but not one named for a dog? How often do you see a cougar riding around in a convertible? We dogs love a nice ride! Would it be so hard to rename the ‘Chrysler Eagle’ the ‘Chrysler Beagle’?” “If a dog barks his head off in the forest and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?” “Why do humans smell the flowers, but seldom, if ever, smell one another?” “We dogs understand human verbal instructions, hand signals, whistles, horns, clickers, beepers, scent IDs, electromagnetic energy finders and Frisbee flight paths. What do humans understand?” “Are there mailmen in heaven? If there are, will I have to apologize?” “Will garbage collectors still steal our ‘stuff’ in heaven?” “Is sticking my nose into places people don’t seem to like an acceptable way of saying ‘Hello!’ in heaven?” “Are there cats in heaven? If so, I promise not to treat them like ‘squeaky toys’ or eat their food...” “When I get to heaven may I be un-’fixed’?”

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Susan Caldwell

A

dult Christian Education is overflowing with opportunities for learning and growth. I’m looking forward to having the Davis Library in Michael’s Room full of activity this coming autumn! I will start out with an overview of Sunday’s-at-Nine Schedule. The Embracing DVD Series with Eboo Patel, noted author and speaker, begins our autumn season with Interfaith Cooperation. Eboo Patel is an American Muslim living in Chicago. He enjoys teaching and speaking to groups about what it means to be of the Muslim faith. Patel looks to encourage interfaith discussion and appreciation at a specific site location in Chicago called Interfaith Youth Core. Eboo Patel has been a presenter on TED Talks. After a good solid month of our four Sundays of the Embracing Series, Dr. Ray Urwin, our Minister of Music, will be venturing into the Sunday’s-at-Nine class on October 11 and 18. The title of his two week presentation is “Some things you don’t know about the Hymnal 1982, Who’s Who, Name that Tune and more!” Then in the latter part of October and November, there will be the Great Courses Series with particular focus on The World’s Greatest Churches. The DVD presenter is Dr. William R. Cook, Distinguished Teaching Professor of History Emeritus, State University of New York at Geneseo. Dr. Cook states in his course guide book, “It is always important to look at the function of each church- a cathedral, monastery, shrine, or parish church. The reason for this is that a church is first and foremost, a place where communities of Christians gather to worship, to give thanks and to call on God for help. Thus one way to judge the greatness of a church is to examine how well it serves its essential purpose.” Opening the Advent Season will be guest speaker,The Rev’d Lisa Rotchford. She will be leading a discussion on Bishop Michael Curry’s book, “Crazy Christians: A Call to Follow Jesus”. Michael Curry is currently the Bishop of Continued on page 6

Saint Michael & All Angels is bursting at the seams with Adult Christian Education!

ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS by Norm Ewers

O

nward Christian Soldiers is a 19thcentury Anglican hymn written in 1865, “in about 15 minutes,” by The Rev’d Sabine Baring-Gould (18341924) for children walking as part of a Whitsunday parade. The theme came from the New Testament’s reference to Christians being good soldiers for Christ, i.e. (II Timothy 2:3 “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Christ.) He later allowed hymn-book compilers to change some of the lyrics; however, Baring-Gould’s are now used in most modern hymnals. The hymn’s lyrics originally used slow music from a Haydn symphony and was not widely accepted until 1871, when Arthur Seymour Sullivan (18421900) set Baring-Gould’s words to a tune (St. Gertrude, which was also used in other Sullivan compositions). The piece became Sullivan’s most popular hymn. Onward Christian Soldiers has had a mixed history, however. While the Salvation Army adopted it as its favorite processional, and it has been sung at many funerals (including that of president Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1969 at Washington National Cathedral), and been associated with civil rights movements, it has been found objectionable by others. In the 1980s, an attempt was made to strip Onward Christian Soldiers from the Methodist and Episcopal Hymnals due to perceived militarism. Outrage among church-goers caused both committees to back down (See Episcopal Hymn No.562). It was omitted from both the 1990 and 2013 Presbyterian hymnals, and some Anglican hymn books have changed the title to “Onward, Christian Pilgrims.” Onward Christian Soldiers also is used in many movies and TV shows, including the long-running M*A*S*H and the 1939 movie classic, “Stanley and Livingston” starring Sir Cedrick Hardwick and Spencer Tracy. In August 1941, when President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill met aboard the HMS Prince of Wales to discuss how the U.S. might help the British war effort, Churchill had those present join in

PLEASE CHECK THE FORWARD MOVEMENT DISPLAY RACK ON THE WALL IN MICHAEL’S ROOM. Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. A donation box is provided. “5 Marks of Mission” is a short pamphlet written by Katherine Jefferts Schori, the twenty-sixth Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. “The Five Anglican Marks of Mission” are a framework for the reconciling work God has sent us into the world to do-that’s what mission means....no one person, no single congregation or diocese...can completely or fully engage all the marks--it takes the Body of Christ to be God’s Mission partner.” Here are the five marks listed: 1. Proclaim the good news of the kingdom. 2. Teach, baptize, and nurture new believers. 3. Respond to human need with loving service. 4. Transform unjust structures of society, challenge violence of every kind, and pursue peace and reconciliation. 5. Safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth. “Five Marks of Mission--like the fingers of a hand. Together they call us into manual service, ministry for the sake of the whole body. May we bless the world in your mission, O Lord.”

singing Onward Christian Soldiers because that meeting “represented the sure hope of saving the world from measureless degradation.” Sabine Baring-Gould and Arthur Sullivan were two men of remarkable talent. Baring-Gould, besides being an active Anglican priest, was also an eclectic scholar, and a prolific author, hagiographer/antiquarian, who authored a sixteen volume collection on the “Lives of the Saints.” Arthur Seymour Sullivan was a prolific composer of many hymns and thirteen major orchestral works. He is best known for the 14 operas he jointly wrote with dramatist W.S. Gilbert. “HMS Pinafore”, “The Pirates of Penzance” and “The Mikado”, Gilbert and Sullivan operas are still performed today. The Christian world and music in general are the better for the work of these two men.

Honoring Our Veterans

On August 8th, we paid tribute to the veterans in our congregation with a lunch. Many of the veterans brought items from the past to show us what they did during their military careers. A huge thank you to Murry McClaren and her team for all the hard work they did to make this meaningful event happen.

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE

OCTOBER 2015 8

POSSIBLE PARISH JOURNEY TO THE HOLY LAND IN FALL 2017 ??? I am very interested in a third Parish Journey to the Holy Land. Are you? Recently I was privileged to have time together with The Very Rev’d John Peterson and Canon Iyad Qumri and said that I’d love to have one more Saint Michael & All Angels’ parish pilgrimage before I retire; they responded “How would 2017 (September 18-30 or October 9-20 or November 9-20) be?” To have both John and Iyad as leaders is an incredible opportunity. Ask our 2011 pilgrims: Don & Sandra Alser, Norris Battin, Bill & Judy Brady, Teri Corbet, Frances Fukuda, Jim & Grace Walker Gray, Ray & Monty Pentz, Frances and Don Haynes, Jim & Lynn Headley, Bryant & Elizabeth and Evans Henry, Steve & Ann Morris, Keith Nelson, Ruth Poole. We will spend ample time in Jerusalem and the Church of the resurrection (housing both the empty tomb and Calvary), the Western Wall and Temple Mount, the Garden of Gethsemane walk both the Palm Sunday Road down the Mount of Olives and Stations of the Cross (with John Peterson, author of the form for the Stations that we use on Good Friday here) through the Old City of Jerusalem; Bethlehem and Manger Square; travel to Galilee and its Sea/Lake, Nazareth and the home of Jesus’ childhood, Capernaum, Magdala, Mount of the Beatitudes and site of the multiplication of loaves and fishes; the Greek Orthodox Monastery built over Jacob’s Well; Qumran and the Dead Sea; maybe ice cream in Ramallah. We will worship with Anglicans living in the land where Jesus walked. There will be ample opportunities to talk with them as well as with Jews and Muslims and other Christians and learn much about contemporary life in Israel/ Palestine. Are you excited? Costs should be approximately $2,075 for land (non-single room housing, excellent middle eastern meals, air conditioned transportation) and $1,800 for coach air travel. Please think prayerfully about this possibility, understand that we will be very safe at all times, talk with parishioners who have made this journey previously, and let Lynn Headley and/or me know that you are interested.
