“If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”
“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” - Roger Caras (photographer and writer) “I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive.” - Gilda Radner (comedienne) “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one is a life diminished.” - Dean Koontz (author, Whispers) These are quotes from my “Rector’s Report” to our 49th Annual Parish Meeting last February as I answered the question, “Why do you so love blessing dogs and cats and other critters as we honor Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi on the first Sunday of October?” When I wrote that report last January I was mourning Luke, our Haynes family’s golden retriever for more than ten years. Luke was born into the Keating family in Big Bear. When I was asked which puppy in the liter I would like, I asked for the smallest male, having had two similar pups who were almost as sweet-tempered as Luke. The Keatings identified their smallest male by a white mark on his forehead and called him “Diamond.” When Luke died a parishioner (and I wish I could remember who...) told me, “Don’t worry. Luke will bring you another dog.” After looking at retriever rescue web sites daily, on May 30 “Retrievers and Friends” had a photo of a dripping wet eight year-old female named ... “Diamond.” My first thought was “Thank you, Luke!” Don and I went to Murrieta the following Saturday and she became a Haynes. She had forgotten her name was “Diamond” so Frances & I and Don renamed her “Callie” after my maternal grandmother. Callie is on the wonderful flyers created by Clyde Dodge bidding you bring your animals to be blessed during Sunday morning worship on October 2nd. Continued on page 5

“LIVING GENEROUSLY” STEWARDSHIP CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF BEGINS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2ND!
BELOVEDS IN CHRIST -
- Will Rogers (wise writer, performer, humorist, cowboy)
<
I
’m honored to serve as the Stewardship Chair for this year’s pledge drive at Saint Michael & All Angels. On Sunday, October 2, we will kick off our annual giving campaign: “Living Generously.” In the weeks following, we will explore together how we can live more generously as individuals and as a community of faith. Living Generously is more than what we do with our financial resources — though that is important. To live generously, we are also called to be open to new ideas, to welcome the stranger, to volunteer often, and to forgive those who have offended us. Your generosity, in response to the abundance in your life, will fund the mission and ministry of Saint Michael & All Angels and transform lives. Here is our roadmap for this year’s pledge drive • Beginning on Sunday, October 2, and continuing throughout the pledge drive, our Sunday bulletin will include reflections written by Episcopal leaders from across the country. These reflections will cover stewardship and faithful giving in connection with the Gospel reading of the day, and we will use them for prayer and study throughout the week. • Each Sunday, we will hear stories of personal transformation through the practice of intentional giving from your fellow parishioners. • On November 6, we will celebrate Commitment Sunday, the culmination of our exploration, when pledges will be completed and offered as an act of worship and in response to all that God has provided.

FOR THE LOVE OF MIKE
FINANCE REPORT: Julie Jenkins, Finance Chairman Total Parish income through August 31 is $305,395. Our Budget was projected to be $325,559. We are behind in income due mostly to the Pledge income being lower. Pledge income is down over 10% of our Budget. We expect this to be corrected now that summer is over. Our Plate income is up, so this helps us to stay more on Budget. PLEASE try to get your Pledges up to date. The 3rd quarter statements will be going out in early October. Please review your status. The statements will be available for you to pick up after both services in October. We will have a table outside so that it will be easier for you. Total Parish expenses are $337,078. We are over Budget by $1,521. We are doing quite well from donations for the use of our facility. To date, we have $41,880. The Verizon wireless lease tower has brought in $12,642. The loan payment to clear the books on the Building Our Faith Loan is still in the process of being accepted by the Diocese. Your Vestry is working very hard for us to stay within the Budget that was approved at the beginning of 2016. We thank you all for your generosity. We are always in need of Tellers to count money after the 10:00 service. Please consider volunteering for this very important job.
* * * PHONE TREE MINISTRY: NEW MEMBERS NEEDED. Our goal is to contact every parishioner by phone once a month. This is a great opportunity to get to know others better and to share information, needs and suggestions about Saint Mike's. Please contact Ruth Poole at 949.644.9263. UTO SUNDAY NOVEMBER 20, 2016
Lynn Headley UTO Parish Coordinator
T
he United Thank Offering is a personal and family devotional program of the Episcopal Church. It is a practice in our life in Christ that begins with daily prayers and gifts of thanksgiving. These gifts, coins and bills dropped in the UTO Blue Box from each individual (man, woman and child) are combined with others at parish and diocesan celebrations and finally within all of The Episcopal Church.
The Offerings totaling in the millions each year are given away in the form of grants. These grants continue to support and strengthen the mission and ministry of the Church throughout the world. Every penny of the Offerings is allocated each year for granting. The mission of the United Thank Offering is to expand the circle of thankful people. To achieve this mission, we encourage daily prayers, offerings, and awareness of the abundance of God’s blessings. Our parish has a history showing our blessing and thankfulness - please pick up a new UTO box and fill it with your thankful offerings between now and November 20th, when we will have a parish ingathering during 8 & 10am worship. < Editor’s note: Last year the United Thank Offering of The Episcopal Church awarded 55 grants for a total of $1,558,006.85 for the mission and ministry of The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. Following are some examples of what the grants were able to provide. DIOCESE OF ALABAMA, $36,687.46: Christ Church Cafe, Christ Episcopal Church, Fairfield, Alabama to update the kitchen and dining facilities of the church in order to expand the outreach ministry by

offering a free meal to the neighborhood on the fourth Sunday of each month. The neighbors will be fed, not just by the food that is served, but also by the fellowship that is shared. DIOCESE OF ALASKA, $29,750.00: Good Grief --Working Together to Overcome Grief. Formalized relationship with the Diocese of Navajoland. To provide seed money to train indigenous facilitators who can counsel individuals and families who are dealing with grief and to train others who can serve as grief counselors. It is the intent that the Diocese of Navajoland will share the results of the program with Diocese of Alaska to aid Alaska in developing a program of indigenous grief counselors who are culturally sensitive and can adapt the Navajoland program for use within Alaska. DIOCESE OF ALBANY, 13,650.00: Support Group Beginnings and One in 4 Awareness, Healing a Woman’s Soul, Inc., Capital District Area, Albany, NY. To provide seed money for a domestic violence consultant to train local support group facilitators for women recovering from substance abuse and domestic violence. This group would potentially include homeless women veterans. A confidential support group network will be provided for those with both substance abuse and domestic violence problems. DIOCESE OF CALIFORNIA, $54,398.00: Stairway to Greater Learning, Holy Trinity/La Santisima Trinidad Episcopal Church, Richmond, CA. To bring the church building up to current safety code requirements in order to serve more low-income neighbors with after-school tutoring for children and English classes for adults. DIOCESE OF CHICAGO, 9,820.00: Workforce Development Program, Lawrence Hall Youth Services--Joint Venture with Episcopal Charities, Chicago, IL. To provide computer upgrades for the Workforce Development Program of Lawrence Hall Youth Services which prepares youth to obtain and maintain employment. The program provides career counseling and teaches and models job readiness skills.<

PRAYERS < HEALING
C
hristian Education is up and running full speed this month of October. Sundays-at-Nine began the month with a guest speaker, Dr. Phil Johnston who spoke on the unity of the Church. For the next several weeks in Sundays-at-Nine, we will return to the popular series of Great Churches. A few of the titles to look forward to are Chartres Cathedral, Saint Peter ’s Basilica and The Wieskierche in Bavaria. Melinda Rader and Ruth Poole are the discussion leaders. Interspersed during those weeks, will be guest speaker, Dr. Ray Urwin who will be speaking to the topic of “Praying Our Goodbyes.” The Men’s Group that meets on Thursday mornings 7:30am-9am in the Davis Library are reading a book by A.N. Wilson, “The Book of the People: How to Read the Bible.” Women’s Fellowship, which meets on the last Tuesday of the month in the home of Beth Bianchi, is viewing topics from the the ChurchNext online education classes, as well as considering the topics presented by Atul Gawande in his book, “Being Mortal.” The Bible Challenge Group which meets on the last Sunday of the month at 7:30am in the Davis Library is waiting for “Journey with John” to be published by Forward Movement. Until the devotional book is published, the group will be reading the Gospel of John. Inklings have once again resumed its meeting time from 9:30am-11am, on the 3rd Thursday of the month, continuing on in their C.S. Lewis Devotional, “Praying with C.S. Lewis.” The group is on the 9th Chapter, “Work in God’s World.” Members and guests are invited to join our small groups for fellowship and to enrich their connections to Christian thinking. Looking ahead to November 27 and December 4, in Sundays-at-Nine, Steve Dulson, Rebecca Welch, Lynn Headley, Richard Zevnik and Murry McClaren, Convention Delegates, will be available for a post-session Q and A in the Davis Library. Be sure not to miss this important time of valuable feedback regarding our Diocese’s selection of our Bishop Coadjutor. Continued on page 7

“Luke” will have another meaning for me this month. On the Feast Day of Saint Luke, Physician and Evangelist, October 18, I will have “reverse right shoulder replacement” surgery. ...Prayers, please! While I am at home recovering, using our “Prayers for Healing” and traveling the labyrinth therein with fingers on my left hand, The Rev’d Dr. Barbara Stewart will be our priest; we will be well led and cared for.

PRAYING OUR GOODBYES SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH 5:00 P.M. DR. RAY URWIN, HOMILIST CHOIR CELLO CONGREGATIONAL HYMNS God has given us each other to help us in this journey we call life. We can grow, learn and find support from one another. If you have lost a loved one, beloved pet, or job, experienced something in life which has brought sadness and difficulty, or know someone who has suffered such a loss, please attend this very special worship at Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church.

* * * MEN’S GROUP: Meets on Thursdays at 7:30am in the Davis Library to discuss questions relating to theology, science, and philosophy. All men are welcome.
The Vestry have set a goal of receiving 100% of pledge commitments from our worshiping community. We will be in intentional prayer that each of us will remain open to letting the Holy Spirit lead and guide us in a faithful response to being called to Live Generously. Thank you for joining me as we consider how we can live more fully into a generous life. May our exploration open us to a new spirit of generosity. < PLEASE CHECK THE FORWARD MOVEMENT DISPLAY RACK ON THE WALL IN MICHAEL’S ROOM. Pick up a pamphlet or two to share with family and friends. A donation box is provided. For this month: The pamphlet “Healing Prayer” contains the finest explanation of its subject that I have ever read. It answers a multitude of questions about prayer and healing. “Healing Prayer is a transformative process of inviting God to be present in our lives. You may petition the Lord for healing for yourself or intercede in prayer for others and anything in creation.” Here are a few questions the author answers: Will I be healed? Will I be cured? Will God perform a miracle in my life? Is healing just for the sick or critically ill? Do I have to believe in healing prayer? We are blessed at Saint Michael & all Angels to have a weekly healing service. Have you ever attended? It’s scheduled at 12 noon each Wednesday in our sanctuary, and all are welcome. <

et’s take a look at what’s most popular on our two parish Facebook pages – facebook.com/SMAACDM and the Daily Mike – facebook.com/ SMAAdailymike/timeline. On SMAA we post upcoming parish activities and announcements and cover significant events. On the Daily Mike, we include news about the Anglican Communion, The Episcopal Church, and the Diocese and support our Christian education, mission, and worship ministries (the Daily Office and the current meditation from “Forward Day by Day” are usually posted here each day.) We measure interest using Facebook’s “reach” figures. A post’s reach is simply the number of people who have seen it. The post counts as reaching someone when it's shown in a News Feed. Figures are for the first 365 days after a post is created and include people viewing the post on both desktop and mobile devices. Remembering that we have only 157 likes (a small number) regularly viewing the SMAA page, here are the posts with the highest reach figures so far this year: Vacation Bible School announcement (27); photo of the dedication of the new landscaping (30); Announcement of 911 services around the diocese (33); a YouTube “Navy Hymn” (#608) performance on July 3 (33); National Cathedral patriotic organ concerts announcement (40); Picture of Steve Dulson’s band at the garden party (51); two sets of photos of Bishop Bruce’s visitation and confirmations (each 55); Bishop Coadjutor candidates named (64); and, the winner is, believe it or not – Callie, our newest parishioner (525). So far, only 23 people “like” the Daily Mike page. The most popular posts this year are: A “Forward Day by Day” meditation on Joshua 4:21-22 ([Joshua said to the Israelites] “When your children ask their parents in time to come, ‘What do these stones mean?’”) had the highest reach followed by the announcement of the bishop coadjutor candidates, Saturday’s Daily Prayer for August 13, and a story about Olivia de Havilland reading the American Cathedral in Paris. Callie was also up in the pack, but not with the lead she had on the SMAA page. Both of these pages offer interesting information, and I encourage you to “Like” and follow them. (more)

Our digital ministry can always use more experienced volunteers. Clyde Dodge could use some assistance in maintaining our website – we’re running to keep up – and we always can use photographs of parish events for the Instagram page. An additional reporter or two for “For the Love of Mike” would help keep the copy fresh. If you are interested, please drop me a note at nbattin@stmikescdm.org. <

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
Christian Ed from page 4 At the Children and Youth Level, Sunday school had a big kick-off with all four rooms: Nursery, Yellow RoomGodly Play, Green Room-Formation and Corner Room-J2A, staffed and launched for Christian Education. Parents signed up their children for the 2016-2017 school years. There was an enthusiastic turn-out. This month, Blessing of the Animals will take place on Sunday, October 2 and Cavalcade of the Saints on Sunday, October 30. Every year, the children have fun picking their favorite Saint and dressing up. Anne Conover does an amazing job at orchestrating this program. She makes sure every child has a costume and is fitted and ready to go on this very special Sunday morning where we honor the lives of those who have gone before us. Youth Choir began in September. It is a wonderful blessing to have Dr. Ray Urwin and Barbara Black working again with the youth and children in music this year. If you get a chance, please thank a SMAA teacher, helper and or youth leader for taking on the educational ministry for the 2016-2017 year. You can know who these individuals are because they arrive at or around the time of the Peace and are escorted by children/youth who are much shorter or much taller than they are! Ongoing support, encouragement and praise are greatly appreciated, and if you would like to join in the delight and fun of Christian Education, please see Melinda Rader, Anne Conover or Susan Caldwell for more information.

oon you may notice our sanctuary has changed a little. We now have Stations of the Cross inside! On our parish pilgrimages to Jerusalem we have always been blessed to attend services at St. George Cathedral. While there, I admired the Stations of the Cross that grace the walls of that sanctuary. These original tile stations were commissioned for our parish and created by Neshan Balian owner of Palestinian Pottery on Nablus Road in Jerusalem. Stations of the Cross or the Way of the Cross, also known as Way of Sorrows or Via Crucis, refers to a series of images depicting Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers. The stations grew out of imitations of Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem which is believed to be the actual path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary. The object of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ. It has become one of the most popular devotions and the stations can be found in the churches of many Western denominations, including Anglican, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopal and Western Orthodox parishes. These will grace our sanctuary over the years and be a spiritual inspiration as well as objects of beauty. <

A Prayer for Guidance Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP Page 100)

NORM EWERS
TERESA OFAVILA (28 MARCH 1515-4 OCTOBER 1582)
Nun, Doctor of the Church, Mystic, Noted Author
T
eresa was born in Avila, Castile (Spain). Her paternal grandfather was a Marrona. A Jewish convert to Christianity; he was condemned by the Inquisition for allegedly returning to the Jewish faith. Her father bought a knighthood and successfully assimilated into Christian society. Teresa’s mother, Biaritz, was keen to raise her daughter in the Christian faith. When Teresa was 14, her mother died, leaving the teen-age girl grief-stricken. The experience had a lot to do with the rest of her life. After her mother’s death, Teresa was sent to the Augustine nuns at Avila for her education. The first of a series of serious illnesses ended her Augustinian studies. During her convalescence she became convinced to enter the religious life and despite her father’s opposition, she became a postulant at a Carmelite convent. After another serious illness sent her home for three years, she returned to the convent. Finding the easygoing life of Carmelite rule distracting from her customary prayer work, she then set out on the most important of her life’s work: Establishing a Reformed Carmelite order of the “discaled” religious, who wore sandals or went unshod. Despite many set-backs, for twenty-five years she traveled throughout Spain, bringing Jesus’ message to many prospective Marronas. Energetic, practical, efficient, as well as being a mystic and ascetic, she, despite imprisonment, established 17 Reformed Carmelite convents and wrote numerous letters and a memoir that gave insight into her personality and concerns. She was a practical organizer, a writer of native genius, a warm and devoted friend, and, above all, a lover of and beloved of God. Her death, following two years of illness, was peaceful. Her last sight was of the Sacrament brought for her comfort; her last words, “O my Lord, now is the time that we may see each other.” Teresa of Avila is a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church, and venerated by the Lutheran Church and the Anglican Communion. October 15th is her Feast Day. --Ref: Lesser Feasts and Fasts, 1997 Wickipedia Encyclopedia, 2016
