Lillehammer The Norwegian Festival of Literature 2019

The power of Language The discussion and revelation of structures and power-relations in language is a theme that we intend to consider during this year’s festival. Every time we express ourselves, our realities are augmented; the words we choose contribute to who we are - they contain markers of identity, class, values and political affiliation. Such is also the case with the language we find in the literature we read, or when we listen to others. Words always have an impact, but the degree depends upon who delivers them. The framework around a discussion can have consequences upon any conclusions that are drawn.

‘Madeleine Moments’ In one of literature’s most famous passages, Proust muses on how the taste of Madeleine cakes dipped in tea unleashes a flow of childhood memories. Good literature often embraces experiences that bring the past to life, both for the character and for the reader. Let this year’s festival provide Madeleine moments through the literature of, amongst others, Johan Mjønes, Han Kang, Eldrid Lunden, Mette Moestrup and Per Petterson – all of whom will be reading and conversing at the festival.

A foretaste of Frankfurt The festival will also lend a hand in Norway’s preparations for this autumn’s main event, the Frankfurter Buchmesse – where Norway will be the Guest of Honour. 16 international publishers and a group representing the German press and German and Swiss bookstores will be amongst NORLA’s guests in Lillehammer during the festival. Georgian writers who have already experienced life as Guests of Honour, in 2018, will also be in Lillehammer to talk with Norwegian authors. Whilst Norwegian PEN has arranged a debate to discuss whether large demands for export lead to realignments within the literary markets.

NORSK LITTERATURFESTIVAL PAGE 9

2019 is panning out to be a very significant year for Norwegian literature, with a year-round initiative across the country, and international exposure beyond anything we have seen before, with Norway being the country of focus at the world's biggest book fair in Frankfurt. Of course, the Norwegian Festival of Literature will be contributing to both of these events. As part of the opening performance the Bjørnson Prize will be awarded to the Danish author Carsten Jensen. The Norwegian Dobloug prize will also be presented. Last year's Dobloug prize winner, Vigdis Hjorth, is one of the authors you will see performing on the opening night, together with author and actor Gine Cornelia Pedersen, author and stage artist Fredrik Høyer and the dance duo Th´Line, who will perform a scene from Lars Mytting's epic work Søsterklokkene. Boualem Sansal is one of Algeria’s most acclaimed contemporary authors. He did not start writing books until he turned 50 and quit his Government job, and he has never looked back, something his output since 1999 clearly demonstrates. In Norway, we know him best as the author of the dystopian novel 2084: The End of the World, describing a post-apocalyptic Arab community, where nobody remembers the past and the prophet rules without competition. Boualem Sansal’s authorship is inextricably linked to North Africa and manages to blend political criticism with gallows humour and overwhelming imagination. Sansal will meet with Associate Professor in French Literature at UiO Geir Uvsløkk to discuss his writing. 150,– | This conversation will be in Norwegian and French

Fellow Man Litteraturhus Lillehammer Novels are populated by characters, and these characters relate to their own worlds and social situations. When we talk and write about books that, in diverse ways, manage to generate identification and compassion, we often use words like depth. If you read the reviews of the two authors Alice Zeniter and Ida Hegazi Høyer, it is this notion that comes up time and again. Both authors construct literary communions that fascinate and stay with the reader. We are therefore looking forward to hearing the two authors together, with Ellen Sofie Lauritzen, in conversation about literature and relationships. 200,– | The conversation is in English

Poets and translators - back to back Galleri Zink

We are fortunate here in Norway to have a corps of skilled and conscientious translators, making sure that those who cannot understand a certain language still have access to the literature written in that language. We also have a series that serves to promote these important books. The publisher Oktober has, for almost 20 years, given us poetry from all over the world, and the relatively new publisher H//O//F has, in recent years, come up with a stream of releases that we would not have missed. It is our desire to remain faithful not only to the texts, but also to the dialogues which form the translations, as such the poet and the translator will read back to back. Here Laura Vazquez and Jacques Roubaud meet their Norwegian counterparts Erlend Wichne and Thomas Lundbo for a reading. Rune Christiansen, editor of Oktobers rendering series, will introduce. 200,– | The readings will be in both Norwegian and French

In May 2018, to mark Tbilisi’s international book fair and guest of honour status at the Frankfurt Buchmesse, Erlend Loe was invited by The Georgian National Book Centre to observe the country. Now, in 2019, when it is Norway’s turn to be guests of honour in Frankfurt, the process is reversed and the Georgian author Archil Kikodze has been invited to Norway to become reacquainted with his colleague again. They will talk about literature festivals, translation, writing, nature and their own experiences. When the current French president first came to power, Leïla Slimani was one of his advisers. The French media reported that she was offered the position of Minister of Culture, but refused. Through her writing, the Moroccan author has worked for women’s rights in France and in her home country. Essentially, Slimani represents for many people a new generation of intellectuals in the Francophonic world. How does she balance her political position with her own writing? And how does she look at the ‘official’ France that she represents? These are some of the questions Leïla Slimani addresses in the conversation with author, editor and critic John Freeman.

Welcome to the launch of the anthology To Kiss a Desert. To Kiss a Marsh. This book has its origins in Azerbaijan, Egypt, Iraq and Eritrea, in Syria, Libya, Chechnya and Iran. The authors included in this collection have experiences far from everyday Norwegian life: to be unsafe in your own home, not to love the one you want or to have to leave one’s life to save it. But also the collection contains stories about the things we all have in common: unruly desires, sudden joy and vulnerability in the face of birth, love and death. Thirteen City of Refuge authors are represented

THE NORWEGIAN FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE PAGE 18

To build a society is not a simple task, nor is it to build a school. Yet, there is some inherent art, something human that drives certain individuals to roll up their sleeves and throw themselves into such schemes. Werewere-Liking Gnepo and Eldrid Lunden are two such people, people who have established something which has gelled and created the basis for development and cooperation. Liking established the theater group Ki-Yi M’bock in 1980, which, in 1985, became Ki-Yi M’bock Village. The village is located in the Ivory Coast and provides an artistic education for young people. Lunden established the Forfatterstudiet i Bø (writer’s studio) at about the same time. These two meet to discuss the role of community around literature and art. Literary Festival Evening Maihaugsalen

Han Kang

THE NORWEGIAN FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE PAGE 19

This is the evening where some of the festival’s most acclaimed writers and performers - Han Kang, Per Petterson, Leïla Slimani, Nicolas Mathieu, Maylis de Kerangal, Simen Ekern, Eirik Havnes and Ingrid Olava - gather on stage. Leïla Slimani is a truly special writer, and a writer who moves within the corridors of power. She has been an advisor to the popular but also strongly criticized President Emmanuel Macron. She is referred to as his minister for «francophonie affairs», a position which in itself is not without problems, the term is also intrinsically related to colonial history, certain values and power structures. Many in France are angry and the level of conflict is high. We therefore intend dig deep into this matter with Leïla Slimani and last year’s Goncourt Prize winner Nicolas Mathieu, when they meet the Norwegian author and European expert Simen Ekern for a conversation about what is really going on in France, about yellow vests and the mentality in the outskirts of Paris. We will also enjoy literature in the purest of forms when Per Petterson reads from his latest book Men in My Situation accompanied by musician and sound artist Eirik Havnes. The evening’s second meeting of great writers will focus on the power of literature, about how it takes on the real challenges of life, such as losing close family members and dealing with the grief that follows. Meet two of the most exciting authors of our time, South Korean Han Kang, whose book The White Book devotes itself to the narrator’s relationship with a sister she never met, and the French writer, Maylis de Kerangal, who has written the poetic and powerful novel Mend the Living, about the shock experienced by relatives at a sudden death and all the difficult questions one has to resolve whilst in the midst of grief. Author and critic Ellen Sofie Lauritzen monitors the conversation. The evening ends with a French-inspired performance from the award-winning Norwegian musician Ingrid Olava, and cellist Kaja Fjellberg Pettersen. There will also be the presentation of the Fiction Translator’s Award. 400,– | Book sale and signing | The conversations are in English.

«Dei nye kapellanane» with Jon Øystein Flink / Flinkini The tent on Stortorget

«Dei nye kapellanane» is a group that has tried many times to disband, but seem incapable of doing so. The group plays popular music in Nynorsk. The group was founded in 1992 but has been revitalized with a series of guests in recent years. Jon Øystein Flink is a writer, magician and gambler and has published seven books, conjured at the Russian embassy and, with his great guitar playing, entertained Norwegians over the whole country. When he isn’t writing, conjuring or playing guitar in the heavy rock group Desertör, he likes to roam, half-drunk around Torshov in Oslo, screaming abuse at random passers-by. The band will team up with the magician at the festival. The band members are Trygve Åslund from Aschehoug, Ragnar Hovland, writer, Lars Fredrik Beckstrøm from deLillos, Jørn Mortensen from KHiO/Penthouse Playboys, Arnt Maasø from the University, and Martin Hystad from the Univers. 250,–

The American writer Lauren Elkin has been in residence at Maihaugen since May 15th and has been working in the writing room at Bjerkebæk. She was selected by the festival for this extended stay because of her amazing book, Flâneuse: Women Walk the City in Paris, New York, Tokyo, Venice and London, which deals with the female urban wanderer. The Goncourt Prize is one of the most important literary awards in the French-speaking world. It is, of course, heavily debated, with writings about the winner and the possible motivation behind the nominations, each and every year. At the festival this year, we have two of the most recent winners. Leïla Slimani is one of only nine women who have been awarded the prize over the last century; and Nicolas Mathieu who won in 2018 with a novel that must be said to place itself directly in relation to the challenges the country faces. Mathieu and Slimani meet to talk about the importance of the prize, their own books and previous winners. Many of us know more about the literature of the Icelandic sagas than we do about contemporary Icelandic literature. To remedy this, we are proud to introduce to you some of today’s Icelandic writers that are well worth knowing. We have Stella Soffía Jóhannesdóttir, publisher and festival manager at the Reykjavík Literary Festival, and Halldór Guðmundsson, who has worked as an Icelandic publisher and author, to share their reading tips. Join an enthusiastic journey through modern Icelandic literature from Halldór Laxness to Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir. Free | the conversation is in english

Writing the dead alive Verdensteateret

Maylis de Kerangal has written a masterful and poetic book where grief, the human body and utility are central themes. In Mend the Living, a young man dies in a car accident, forcing those closest to him to decide how his body can still be beneficial to others. The book not only describes what happens to the body, but also questions how the world looks at a body that is no longer «active». The author is in conversation with John Freeman. 200,– | The conversation is in English

Post-post-colonialism Lillehammer Kunstmuseum

THE NORWEGIAN FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE PAGE 24

It is not so strange that we still see today the repercussions of colonialism, which, during the last century, defined the relationship between the so-called first and third worlds. These ripple effects have been clearly represented in postcolonial art. Languages such as English and French became battle zones for history. In recent years, we have seen that this tradition has expanded further, through new narrative inputs, creating what we, for want of a better phrase, must refer to as post-post-colonial art. This is a field which has become defined by third-generation narratives and «secondary character narratives». This last genre can be exemplified by Kamel Daoud’s book The Meursault Investigation, which takes for its story The Stranger by Camus, only it is told from the perspective of the brother, Haroun, to the nameless Arab, whose murder starts off this classic. Alice Zeniter’s L’Art de Perdre also has its roots in colonial Algerian history, even though it is set in contemporary France. The conversation between Alice Zeniter and Kamel Daoud will be about their personal experience of major world events and the struggle to take back these stories. The conversation is moderated by Synneve Sundby. 200,– | Book sale and signing | The conversation will be translated into Norwegian.

Record talk with Morten Strøksnes and Heidi Sævareid

Cafe Stift

Late evening and nighttime is a time of poetry, when darkness falls and the distinction between shadow and light becomes clearer, the poem emerges as a preferred form. Therefore, we have asked four writers to lead us into the twilight with apposite texts. Norwegians Erling Kittelsen and Anna Kleiva read together with Gunel Movlud from Azerbaijan, and Ashur Etwebi from Libya.

For a short period in the seventies, Berlin was the epicenter of pop music development. A collaboration between David Bowie, Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti set a path that can still be followed today on dance floors all over the world. Morten Strøksnes and Heidi Sævareid meet to play some tunes and talk a little about what actually happened on the west side of the wall, almost 50 years ago.

Dagny Juel, Georgia, Norge Lillehammer Kunstmuseum

THE NORWEGIAN FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE PAGE 27

While the marketing campaign behind «the big four» was in full swing, another group existed on the side of the best sellers. Today we remember this group as the Kristiania (Oslo) bohemia, avantgarde writers, visual artists and political thinkers who travelled between Berlin, Paris and the Norwegian capital. Many of us are familiar with Ketil Bjørnstad’s depiction of this environment, but it turns out that this group has aroused interest in other parts of the world. Georgian writer Zurab Karumidze has written the critically acclaimed novel Dagny, or a Love Feast, about the author and the muse Dagny Juel. These two, Ketil Bjørnstad and Zurab Karumidze, meet for conversation led by author and historian Ivo de Figueiredo. 150,– | In collaboration with NORLA | The conversation is in English

French Film Matinée - The Intouchables Lillehammer kino

The Intouchables is an uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human potential, the true story of two men who should never have met each other. Multi-millionaire Philippe is paralyzed from the neck down after a paraglider accident and must live the rest of his life in a wheelchair. He lives in a luxurious residence in Paris and must hire a new care assistant. The only candidate that stands out from the applicants is Driss, who has applied for the job purely to show that he is an active job seeker, to keep his social security benefits. This is the beginning of an unlikely friendship rooted in honesty and humour between two individuals who on the surface have nothing in common. The film premiered in 2011 and became critically acclaimed worldwide. 80,– | Host: Lillehammer kino | Age limit: 7 years (suitable for youths/adults)

Main Lecture Litteraturhus Lillehammer

How did leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump come to power? How could the systems that promised so much after the fall of the wall lead us to the uncertainty we now feel? When the Cold War finally ended, Americans and Europeans thought they were finally safe. We were convinced that democracy and globalization would bring peace and wealth forever, but they did not. Professor Timothy Snyder explains the reasons for this in his latest book, The Road to Unfreedom. These phenomena have only led to greater inequality and have paved the way for fascism and authoritarian political systems. The well-known political thinker and author presents this year’s main lecture during the festival. 200,– | Book sale and signing | The conversation is in English.

Join folk singer Margrete Nordmoen, actress Sara Birgitte Øfsti and the authors Tore Skeie and Tore Kvæven, from Haakons to Brenneriet to Mikrobryggeriet and finally to the tent, where there will be a panel discussion and singing. The last performance

Kulturhuset Banken, Festsalen

A concert performance with the songs by Edith Piaf and the poetry of Jon Fosse. Unmistakably different, but common to Piaf and Fosse is an expression of love existing as an independent force that simply exists almost independent of man’s actions. One sings it unfiltered, the other conjures it up from the depths. Jon Fosse’s poetry is set to music by Arnhild Vik and will be premiered during this year’s festival. Starring: Eline Holbø Wendelbo - lyrics and voice, Arnhild Vik composition and piano, Sigurd Tingstad accordion/accordéon musette. 300,–

To enclose oneself IN SIGRID UNDSET ’S HOUSE THERE ARE MANY ROOMS

Lillehammer Kunstmuseum

THE NORWEGIAN FESTIVAL OF LITERATURE PAGE 31

One hundred years ago, in 1919, Nobel prize-winner Sigrid Undset relocated to Bjerkebæk, a house in the town of Lillehammer. For Undset, ‘home’ was a fundamental part of life’s development; in both her literature and her life, ‘home’ played a decisive role. The title of this exhibition – To Enclose Oneself – comes from Undset herself, describing the joys of creating one’s own place of residence. In the original Norwegian, Undset played on words, creating a double meaning that referred to both the satisfaction of making a home for her family, and also in finding a place to hide away from the pressures of the outside world. The exhibition will house objects both artistic and cultural that formed the framework of Undset’s taste and ideology – including pieces from Carl Larsson, Prince Eugen, William Morris, Agnes Slott-Møller, Gerhard Munthe and contemporary artists Hedevig Anker and Christian Partos. Free with festival pass | Host: Lillehammer Kunstmuseum
