Shipyards plan moving ahead City tosses ferris wheel from waterfront vision

City of North Vancouver council is moving ahead with a slightly toned down version of its grandiose plans for the Shipyards.

The plan still has as its main features an outdoor public skating rink and covered structure, a water feature for kids (or adults) to play in, an event stage and gathering area, revenue-generating commercial space, as well as connections to the spirit trail and foot of Lonsdale.

Gone from the plan, however, is the ferris wheel at the end of the pier, which had been a lightning rod for criticism by opponents of the plan.

Gone too are Las Vegasstyle water fountains on the waterfront.

Both of those would require extensive infrastructure upgrades as well as approval from outside jurisdictions, including Port Metro Vancouver and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, a city staff report notes.

The report does, however, leave the door open to these aspects of the original plan should future councils want to pursue them.

The District ofWest Vancouver is talking to the City ofVancouver about joining forces on an independent environmental assessment of the oil spill that continued to wash up on Burrard Inlet beaches this week.

“We want to own our own data and our own processes,” said Jeff McDonald, spokesman for West Vancouver, on Thursday.

Word of an independent environmental assessment by the municipalities came as the department of Fisheries and Oceans closed harvesting of shellfish and ground fish in waters off

West Vancouver shores as a precautionary measure.

Fishing of shellfish and ground fish is currently closed throughout Burrard Inlet, including the waters off Ambleside and Dundarave beaches and Lighthouse Park.

The closure will be reviewed once lab results show whether marine life has been affected by the oil spill.

The North Shore has lost a modern master.

Fred Thornton Hollingsworth, the architect who helped pioneer West Coast modernism and shaped the post-war look of residential North Vancouver, died April 10 at the age of 98.

Hollingsworth leaves a legacy both philosophical and physical. Many of the homes he designed are still standing, including the residence in Edgemont Village he designed for his family in 1946. It’s where his son Russell grew up.

“It was very, very small.

Very simple. It was the first house he designed before he became an architect,” Russell says of the originally 1,100-square-foot, onebathroom house that accommodated their family of five.

That house launched Hollingsworth’s career.

He articled with Sharp & Thompson, Berwick, Pratt and later became an associate at W.H. Birmingham. He partnered with architect Barry Downs

in the early ’60s and ran his own firm from 1966 onwards. He designed mainly residential homes, many of them on the North Shore, but some larger buildings as well such as UBC’s Faculty of Law building.

Hollingsworth was a busy man in the post-war years, moonlighting constantly.

“He was not your average TV dad,” says Russell, also an architect, “but he taught me a lot about working with my hands, and about art and culture and architecture and philosophy.We were steeped in that kind of an upbringing.”

Born in England in 1917, Hollingsworth moved to Canada with his family when he was 12. A talented musician, painter, sculptor and draftsman, Russell describes his father as a “Renaissance man.”

“He was a real craftoriented person. He did all his own drawing and was not an executive-type architect, but a real working man’s architect.”

Beach closures extended to H. Bay From page 1 people were still crab fishing in those areas. In response to public concerns, district crews also doubled the number of signs warning of beach closures and extended them to Horseshoe Bay. Dr. Mark Lysyshyn, medical health officer for the North Shore, said skin or lung irritation is the biggest immediate health risk from coming into contact with the oil. In terms of longer-term health risks, “Some of these hydrocarbons in this mixture are also carcinogens,” he said, so it’s a good idea to stay away.

As cleanup continues in West Vancouver, “The good news is the total amount of shoreline where oil has been found is only a few kilometres in West Vancouver,” said McDonald.

“The not-so-good news is there are lots of small areas where oil has come ashore.”

In many of the areas where oil was cleaned from the shoreline during the first days after the spill, more oil later came in on the tide,

District ofWestVancouver environmental staff has been accompanying crews from the Western Marine Response Corp. to make sure the cleanup is thorough, said McDonald.

Accused trail saboteur intends to plead guilty

“They know the shoreline well and they’ve been aggressive with the (cleanup crews),” said McDonald.

“We consider any oil on any beach problematic.”

McDonald said West Vancouver has been tracking all costs involved in the spill response and will be making

a claim for those against the shipping company involved.

Researchers from the Vancouver Aquarium have also been collecting samples of water, sediment and shellfish from the area around Burrard Inlet, including Ambleside.

Preliminary results

from Ambleside showed no volatile lighter compounds from the oil spill but did show some low concentrations of heavier PAH hydrocarbon compounds in sediments from both the high and low tide line, said Peter Ross, head of the aquarium’s Ocean Pollution Research Program.

Ross said researchers will follow up and collect samples of sediments and mussels from Ambleside and Dundarave for a more detailed analysis.

Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish Nation said he’s also very concerned about the spill and its potential impact on the environment.

“We share the concern of many communities here,” he said, adding the Squamish Nation wasn’t notified of the spill until 17 hours after it happened.

“We have to question the legitimacy of the federal government saying they have world-class (spill response) standards.”

A North Vancouver woman accused of sabotaging mountain biking trails is expected to plead guilty to a criminal charge in the case.

Martin Peters, defence lawyer for Tineke (Tina) Kraal, 64, said Kraal intends to plead guilty when her case comes back to court — likely at the end of June.

Kraal faces one charge of obstructing or interfering with District of North Vancouver trails in a way “likely to constitute mischief causing actual danger to life” between Jan. 5, 2013 and Jan. 4, 2015.

The Upper Lynn Valley resident is accused of repeatedly laying branches, logs and sticks across steep sections of the Lower Skull and Quarry Court trails on Mount Fromme.

The case came to light after two mountain bikers placed hidden cameras in the trees, allegedly capturing Kraal’s actions on surveillance.

Kraal was arrested at 5 a.m. on Jan. 4 as she exited a trailhead.

Peters refused to comment Wednesday on whether the surveillance video was a factor in Kraal’s intent to plead guilty.

Earlier charges of setting a trap with intent to injure and mischief by obstructing use of property have been dropped.

Peters also refused to comment on how his client is doing in the face of intense public interest in the case.

“I will have a lot to say about this when we get to sentence,” he said.

Neither the Crown prosecutor nor Peters would comment on what kind of sentence Kraal could be facing once she pleads guilty.

Peters said the circumstances of the case are very unusual.

“Both the Crown and I had difficulty finding any precedents,” he said. “This is a real one-off.”

A date for Kraal’s next court appearance will be set next week.

RCMP denies allegations in civil forfeiture suit WestVan woman acquitted of human trafficking claims police impropriety MARIA SPITALE-LEISK Mspitale-leisk@nsnews.com

B.C.’s Civil Forfeiture Office maintains it acted lawfully when it attempted to seize a $5million British Properties mansion from aWest Vancouver woman who was facing charges, and later acquitted, of human trafficking.

The province has entered a statement of defence in response to a civil claim filed by Mumtaz Ladha in February, in which she alleges the director of civil forfeiture didn’t do his due diligence and examine the RCMP’s investigation before going after the family home.

Ladha, 61, and her family are also suing the

RCMP in B.C. Supreme Court, claiming a negligent investigation into the case caused them to suffer financial and emotional harm.

The case dates back to 2008 when Ladha brought a then 23-year-old mother from Tanzania to live with her in West Vancouver.

Ladha was later accused of keeping the woman as a slave inside her home, forcing her to work unpaid and feeding her only food scraps.

Ladha was found not guilty in November 2013 of four charges she faced under the Immigration and Refugee Act after a B.C. Supreme Court justice concluded the complainant in the case likely made up the story of being treated like a slave to stay in Canada.

“The slave narrative was repeated around the world,” said Ladha’s lawyer David Martin at a news conference in February, referring to the international attention the story received.

In its lengthy response

to the lawsuit, the province has denied any wrongdoing, saying the director of civil forfeiture was acting on a considerable amount of information provided by the RCMP when the government attempted to seize Ladha’s home.

Ladha claims in the lawsuit that the civil forfeiture office was motivated by meeting financial targets and knew the home was worth $5 million — allegations the province disputes.

During her legal fight with the province over her West Vancouver home, Ladha had to pay $160,000 for a lawyer to present her case, on top of $392,000 in other legal fees.

Among Ladha’s claims against the RCMP: that investigators ignored motives the complainant would have for lying, and an RCMP officer involved in the case befriended the complainant and spent time patching holes in her evidence rather than seeking the truth.

After charges were laid,

the RCMP held a press conference in which they presented a sensationalized version of events, according to Ladha’s lawsuit.

In its 28-page response filed by the Attorney General of Canada, the RCMP denies the allegations and defends the officers’ actions.

As part of the investigation, police officers interviewed employees at a women’s shelter where the purported victim was staying.

According to court documents, those employees told police the young woman appeared tense and distrusting, and was grateful to be receiving food.

The RCMP also spoke to Ladha’s handyman who told them he’d observed the “victim” taking on all the housework and being yelled at by Ladha.

In its statement of defence, the Attorney General added the RCMP didn’t do anything improper in making the case public.

Hollingsworth was a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright. Inspired by Wright’s organic design principles, he and contemporary Ron Thom were among the earliest initiators of the West Coast style, making use of natural materials at a time when steel and concrete

were hard to come by.

“They had very horizontal lines and they were based on open plans, which was very different from most housing,” Russell says.

As architectural writer and curator Adele Weder explains, Hollingsworth developed the neoteric style of house based on an easily replicable template.

“They all have the same kind of DNA, but they’re customized for each client, so it’s sort of the best of both worlds.You don’t have

that mindless repetition of tract housing, but you don’t have the wastefulness and exclusivity of having a completely different home for every client.”

What really sets a Hollingsworth house apart, she says, is the craftsmanship and the humanity he injected into his work.

“Sometimes modernism can be overly rigorous, overly rational. Fred’s work, though modern, was always organic and always had a sense of playfulness.”

In that sense, Hollingsworth’s character was reflected in his designs.

“He had a great sense of humanity about him and an unbelievable sense of humour,” Russell says.

One of his father’s greatest strengths, he adds, was creating homes for working people of modest means.

“He didn’t seek out or have really wealthy clients.

He was a very egalitarianminded kind of person and believed that good design shouldn’t be exclusive.”

he inside of a voting booth is meant to be the most private of places but our provincial political parties wouldn’t mind stepping in with you.

That will be the effect of a bill now before the legislature that would allow political parties to gain access to data on which British Columbians voted and which ones didn’t.

The government’s justification is that it will help address lower voter turnout as recommended by the chief electoral officer.

Except, as B.C.’s information and privacy commissioner Elizabeth Denham has pointed out, collecting data on who has voted and who hasn’t and turning it over to political parties has absolutely nothing to do with increasing voter turnout — and the chief electoral officer recommended no such thing.

More than ever, election campaigns

are run like machines — machines that are fuelled by personal information logged into sophisticated databases that allow parties to target their campaign messaging (and budgets). Knowing who doesn’t vote simply gives the parties more licence to ignore people already marginalized by the system — especially the young and people with low incomes.

Let’s not give them more fuel for the machine.

Dwindling voter turnout is indeed a distressing symptom of the health of democracy. If those in power are truly interested in growing voter turnout, they can start be changing the behaviours that keep people home on election day –— scandals, attack ads, patronage, lavish spending on things that have nothing to do with governance, putting the interests of the party and its donors ahead of constituents.You know... Record funding for health care

Dear Editor: Re: New Health Accord Urged, April 3 news story.

For your readers’ benefit, I want to take this opportunity to highlight our government’s position on this important issue, which was not included in the original published article.

To be clear, since coming to office in 2006, there have been no federal cuts to health care. In fact, our government has increased

health transfers to the provinces through the Canada Health Transfer by nearly 70 percent. Health Canada further announced in December 2011 that the CHT will continue to grow at six per cent annually until 2016-17.

Our government is delivering record funding that will reach $40 billion annually by the end of the decade.This means $4.4 billion for British

Columbians in 20152016, or 13 per cent of total spending; this is more than any other province receives except for Quebec and Ontario.This not only provides immense resources to ensure the wellbeing of Canadians nationwide, it also gives each provincial and territorial government the stability and predictability they need to implement health plans that suit their diverse populations.

Ultimately, while the federal government transfers money to the provinces, we respect the provinces’ constitutional jurisdiction over health care and the administration of its programs and services. It is important to note that since 2010, spending by the provinces grew by less than three per cent.This means that our federal transfers are increasing at a rate of double that of provincial spending.

I certainly sympathize with doctors, nurses and other health-care practitioners who, like many Canadians, have to deal with high demands while working with finite resources. I also understand that throwing more money at this issue will not address inefficiencies in the health system.

Election won’t hinge on youth vote There appears to be some increasing chatter out there that somehow, the so-called “youth vote” will decide the outcome of the looming federal election and turf Stephen Harper from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Sorry, I’m not buying that.

While the October election outcome remains very much an open question, there is little evidence to support the theory that younger voters will dominate older ones and stampede the Conservatives from office.

In fact, there is evidence to support the exact opposite thesis.

Tacked to the board beside my computer is a neat little bar graph chart that shows the voting patterns of people of various ages from the 2013 B.C. election. It speaks volumes.

For example, there were about 740,000 registered voters under the age of 35 in 2013. That compares to almost 1.3 million registered voters who were

View from the Ledge older than 54 (another 1.15 million were aged between 35 and 54).

So, on sheer volume, the aging Baby Boomer generation dominates voting (as it dominates so many other things, from health care to real estate).

But the more revealing statistic in this chart — it was produced by Elections B.C., by the way, and is available on its website — is the percentage of people who actually vote.

For those aged 35 and younger, the voter turnout was an appalling low 42 per cent in the 2013 election (it was even lower in the

2011 federal election). For those over the age of 54, the turnout was a much more impressive level of 68 per cent.

Nevertheless, youth activist Brigette DePape (she was the parliamentary page who held up the “Stop Harper” sign in the House of Commons a ways back) is trying to kick start a campaign aimed at lighting a fire under young people, urging them to vote in a bid to oust Harper from office.

DePape is targeting strategic ridings where the Conservatives are potentially most vulnerable (i.e. where they won seats by less than a thousand votes or so).

I wish her well in increasing the turnout at the ballot box among younger voters, but there is a flaw in the argument that a big jump in the youth vote is automatically bad news for the Conservatives.

Simply not voting for a Conservative candidate still requires a young, new voter to cast a ballot for another party’s candidate. And that

is where things can get interesting.

It strikes me that young voters are not a monolithic voting bloc, assigned to one particular political party in much greater numbers than any other.

For example, a number of surveys show concerns over climate change are much more of a priority issue for young adults than older ones, which in turn may suggest the Green Party would be the biggest benefactor from a big uptick in the youth vote.

But surely a youthful Justin Trudeau of the Liberal Party is an obvious attraction for young voters.

And the NDP’s Thomas Mulcair got a rock-star kind of reception from a youthful crowd on a recent visit to Vancouver.

So it’s easy to see that a surge of, say, 1,000 new young voters in a riding would cast their ballots in all directions (even the Conservatives have some support among young people), thus cancelling out much of any supposed advantage for any party.

SWEDISH LUXURY COMES AT A PRICE. A VERY SENSIBLE PRICE INDEED.

In fact, if the vote splits three ways among young voters (as it may very well do in a number of close ridings) it would ironically be Conservative incumbent MPs who would benefit the most. Their enemies’ vote totals may increase, but not by enough to be defeated, since any resurgent youth vote may be diluted across the board.

The next federal election outcome will be decided by a number of factors: how the economy is performing, whether Trudeau or Mulcair can be trusted as the country’s leader, whether enough of the electorate is tired with Harper or perhaps even if the fallout of the trial of Senator Mike Duffy convinces enough voters to wash their hands of the Conservatives.

But as much as I’d like to see a huge resurgence in the number of young people actually casting ballots, the chances of them proving to be a pivotal factor in determining the next prime minister are not good.

Still, I hope DePape scores some kind of success. Voter turnout needs to increase to keep a democracy healthy, and what better place to start than with first-time voters?

New rec centre will benefit all From page 6 live here. The rec centre provides one of our pillars in our development as a community. Lonsdale is becoming so dense in population, yet the rec centre remains as it was some 60 years ago. I swam in that same pool when I was a kid growing up in North Vancouver. I still like to go swimming there 50 years later; however, it pales in comparison to some of the other pools in the Greater Vancouver area. Why can we not have a decent and modern facility? With all the growth going on, surely the city must feel obliged to offer its citizens a proper recreation facility?

Voting to develop the waterfront will serve a very small and targeted business community. Building a

new recreation facility would serve the broader community and provide us with the means to keep fit, active and happy. It also, most importantly, provides children a chance to develop athletically and for families to have fun and play.

I think the city council got its priorities mixed up. Instead of building a new recreation centre that would benefit the greater population of the City of North Vancouver, they have decided to put our tax dollars towards a development that will benefit only a small minority of business interests at the bottom of Lonsdale.

I am asking the City of North Vancouver council to rethink this decision.

Creative inspiration can strike in the most unlikely places.

Jazz musician Laila Biali was on the subway, travelling home to Brooklyn with her five-monthold son Joshua in tow after having attended a party full of “fabulous, single NewYork folks.” As the train car rumbled forward, she couldn’t help but think how much her life had changed since becoming a mother. Joshua had been a surprise.

Just one year earlier, when Biali learned she was pregnant, the North Vancouver-raised pianist and singer was on tour with Sting. Joshua’s arrival meant she and her husband, drummer Ben Wittman, had to turn down some major career opportunities.

Reflecting on the unexpected path her life had taken, Biali looked down at her baby boy and tried to imagine life without him.

“There was really no question at that point,” she says, “I wouldn’t have traded him for anything, and that was when I started the lyrics for the song ‘Little Bird.’”

“Little Bird” is one of 11 tracks off Biali’s latest album House of Many Rooms, released April 14 under Laila Biali and the Radiance Project. It’s her first album of entirely original material and her first album that departs from the jazz genre, venturing into pop-oriented territory.

Biali went to Handsworth secondary and studied jazz with Bob Rebagliati (known to his students as Mr. Reb). After graduating from Humber College in Toronto, she moved to New York City to pursue her jazz career and made a name for herself covering the music of other artists.The Juno nominee has performed all over the world and has toured with the likes of Paula Cole and Suzanne Vega.

as they were sharing their original songs and stories, I was really compelled to begin exploring songwriting myself in the cracks and crevices of life on the road and my own solo career as a jazz musician,” she says.

For several years Biali plugged away at songwriting, finding lyrical inspiration in her personal life, current events and the stories of friends. She wrote “Sparrow” after hearing that her friend’s sister had lost her twins eight months into her pregnancy.

“I was so stunned and profoundly devastated by her news that I was immediately driven to process at the piano and I wanted to capture what I was feeling, I wanted to write a song that could be dedicated to her and that I could have the opportunity to share with her.”

One after another, Biali put these songs on the back burner until Wittman begged to hear them.

“Through tears I played this music for him because I found it so difficult to share such deep and personal music. It felt very risky to me and very vulnerable.”

Wittman encouraged her to record the songs and ended up co-producing House of Many

Heather O’Neill recently came across a great quotation by fellow Montreal-born writer Mavis Gallant.

“Perhaps a writer is, in fact, a child in disguise,” wrote Gallant, a GovernorGeneral’s Award-winning author of short stories who spent much of her adult life in France and passed away in February 2014.

“I thought that was just perfect,” says O’Neill.

The quote spoke volumes, offering insight into her own unique and celebrated approach to storytelling.

In her two awardwinning novels, 2006’s Lullabies for Little Criminals and last year’s The Girl WhoWas Saturday Night,

O’Neill wrote from the perspective of youths navigating the inner city streets of Montreal. In Lullabies for Little Criminals, 13-year-old motherless Baby finds herself in a relationship with a dangerous pimp, and in The GirlWhoWas Saturday Night, twin Nouschka, 19, tries to find her own identity apart from her erratic brother and their father, a legendary Québécois folksinger who’s fallen on hard times.

O’Neill, reached Monday at her home base of Montreal, says she’s continually drawn to younger perspectives in her writing because as main characters, they offer an opportunity to describe things in new ways. Often, a child’s perspective, in contrast to an adult’s, has yet to be categorized, allowing them to see the world through a fresh set of eyes.

“If the child sees a person who an adult would perceive immediately as a loser or a bum, or an addict, the child might see that person for their other qualities, like might see them as a storyteller, or someone’s who’s really funny, or someone who’s very generous,” she says.

O’Neill also views writing from younger perspectives as a means of enabling her to experiment with “imagistic metaphorical writing.” “(For) children, the line between what’s real and not real is kind of thin and they live in the land of make believe. With my metaphors I kind of leap back and forth from the mundane things to magical realist possibilities. I think that’s why I was drawn to a child’s perspective. I’m not always going to write from a child’s perspective. My characters are growing up,” she says.

Maybe so, however, hot off the presses and welcomed into the hands of her legions of fans is O’Neill’s first short story collection, Daydreams of Angels, intended as a “book of magical tales,” she says, for grownups.

“The collection I

kind of conceived as a whole. I wanted it to be seen like one of those old anthologies of children’s literature that I used to get for Christmas in the ’70s.

They would just have little chapters from Dickens novels and then a fairytale, and then an Aesop fable and then a story from the Bible. So I wanted it to be like one of those big children’s compendiums but then they would all be dark and for adults and with my own sort of twisted, perverted, little trademark things stuck in there,” she says.

O’Neill also set out to showcase the family storytelling tradition, casting light on the mythology that people can grow up with, hearing children’s tales from parents or grandparents and keeping them alive.

“I find that is so much in the fabric of our imagination. Not only what we read, but the stories that are part of our family lore,” she says.

Examples of short stories featured in Daydreams of Angels include: “Dear Piglet,” depicting a naive cult follower; “Snow-White and Rose-Red,” exploring the struggle of two young women in occupied Paris; and “The Ugly Ducklings,” the story of generations of failed Nureyev clones in post-Soviet Russia.

O’Neill has received a number of high-profile accolades for her works.

Her debut novel, Lullabies for Little Criminals, won the 2007 Canada Reads competition, the Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction, and was a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Fiction and the Orange Prize. The Girl WhoWas Saturday Night was shortlisted for the 2014 Giller Prize and has been longlisted for the 2014/2015 Encore Award for the Best Second Novel.

O’Neill is beyond grateful for all of the honours that have been bestowed upon her.

“It’s wonderful because it allows you to continue what you’re doing. With each thing, I feel a little more confident going back into the fictional realm. I’m working on a novel now, I do feel more confident than I did with the other ones, See O’Neill page 30

magazine Mike finds himself ejected from Manhattan and landing in Montana, where his wife Jill (Felicity Jones) has been keeping the home fires burning. He’s so busy licking his wounds and hustling for freelance assignments he misses the news that a convicted killer has been picked up in Mexico.The alias he’s been using: Mike Finkel.

Mike is curious and a little flattered, but he’s most interested in a chance to get his disgraced name back in print, so he meets with Christian Longo (James Franco) in an Oregon penitentiary. Christian is awaiting charges for murdering his wife and three young children.Two of the children were thrown off a bridge while still alive; his wife and his three-yearold — who was also still breathing — were stuffed into separate suitcases and chucked in the sound.

“Did you do it?”

Interestingly, the question comes from Christian first, referring to Mike’s plagiarism, not from Mike, who might’ve asked Christian about his horrific crimes.The convict offers Mike exclusive access to his story in exchange for writing lessons, a deal too good for the writer to pass up.

The cast is saddled with lines like “everybody deserves to have their story heard”, “the truth always matters”, and “it’s OK, tell him I’m from the NewYork Times” (the latter eliciting unintended giggles from the audience). Scenes go on too long, adding emphasis where there should be none. For example, Mike’s meeting with a detective (Robert John Burke) is so stilted it’s as if the film were shot by a foreign director new to the English language. Cliched language is the film’s first strike, but poor acting is the second.

Hill’s big blue eyes stare blankly; he is not in the least convincing as a hard-nosed journalist, despite the serious glasses and perpetually untucked shirttail. Franco’s tone never changes, and neither does his stare, whether it’s meant to convey pain, guilt or deceit.The two actors have collaborated before and given memorable performances separately

(Moneyball, Spring Breakers) but fail to connect and convince us of the “bromance” so crucial to the true story.

Jones, already miscast, wanders the film offering up red herrings such as looking at ancient manuscripts. She provides the only scene with a heartbeat, when she confronts Christian. She is also at the centre of the film’s most stylish scene (thanks to cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi) as she takes a prison phone call from Christian and wanders around her home closing and checking windows. It’s a glimpse of what the thriller might have been.

Vancouver’s Eco Fashion Week is back for a ninth season, proving you don’t have to sacrifice ethics for style.

The six-day festival, which runs April 19 to 24, is jam packed with runway shows and fashionfocused events designed to raise awareness of social, environmental and economically sustainable practices. Two North Shore residents are among the lineup of local and international brands and designers who will be presenting their responsible spring collections next week.

Lotusland Imports West Vancouver resident Susan Bibbings is passionate about two things: increasing access to education and preserving the natural environment.

In 2011, she founded Lotusland Imports, a social enterprise jewelry company that allows her to follow those passions.

“It’s quite an unusual and international collaboration of women,” Bibbings says of the company.

She has partnered with Italian fashion designer Francesca Torri Soldini, who teaches in Milan, and Swiss safari lodge owner Tati Oliver, who heads up the Lotusland headquarters

Prior to this collaboration, Bibbings says the Maasai women in the area generated income by cutting down trees and making and selling charcoal.

“Our jewelry project was really born from an innovative idea to provide this alternative income source and we have successfully shifted all 200 of the women away from logging and they’re now working with our company,” she says. “It is perhaps the only jewelry in the world that not only empowers women, but also stops deforestation.”

Couture Therapy For a lot of people, the term “eco fashion” doesn’t conjure up images of sexy sophistication.

“They think hemp, they think linen, and that’s about it,” says Lynn Valley fashion designer Sarah Couture (yes, that is her real surname).

She founded her Couture Therapy collection in 2013 with the goal of creating elegant, feminine and timeless clothing that is also sustainable.

“The major thing is keeping everything local,” she says, explaining she sources natural materials, such as silk, wool, leather, organic cotton and bamboo, as close to home as possible. She will also buy leftover fabric from other local designers that might otherwise go to waste. “I try to make everything myself,” she adds.

Her spring/summer 2015 line has a Parisian theme and features simple pants, skirts, dresses and, of course, horizontal stripes. At Eco Fashion Week, she will also be showing pieces for fall.

“I’m bringing in more

of my Scottish heritage to the fall line,” she says, noting her 100-per-cent cotton tartan. Couture’s latest designs will soon be available online at couturetherapy.ca. She is also opening a pop-up shop April 27 to May 3 at 434

So you can take risks and be more experimental. I don’t know, I just feel a little happier in my place, in my imagination. It’s sort of like people have said, ‘Yes, you may go there,’ as opposed to just feeling like, ‘Well I’m here. Nobody cares. Does that mean I’m insane?’” she laughs.

When asked where her interest in storytelling is derived, she says it goes back to her childhood and a lifelong love of books and literature.

“Since I was quite young I wanted to be a writer. I loved it when I was a kid, being able to write. I always kept journals. It’s what I did all the time. I would go to the library, I had this grocery cart, and I would come back with 15 books. And I would scribble about things that I had seen in my journal. It started off as a lot of fun. But it’s always like, that’s where the initial

impulse comes, but then to actually get good at your craft, you have to slave away for at least a decade of torturous failures and rejections. But you know, it’s like that, any profession is difficult. Now there’s just no turning back. Even if I wanted to stop, I’m qualified to do absolutely nothing else,” she says.

O’Neill’s first two novels developed conceptually as character studies of sorts, the result of her fascination with people with big, interesting or odd personalities.

“I was always inspired by that as a kid so then I wanted to create my own characters that were really full of life, and kind of philosophers. I had the desire also to create characters who came from different walks of life who weren’t normally seen as being particularly bright, or having any sort of integrity or nobility. So kind of the lower classes and to find characters from there but describe them in a way

that people would really relate to them and really understand their journeys and what was special about them,” she says.

O’Neill is currently in the throes of writing her third novel, a process she’s thoroughly enjoying. A historical work set in 1930s Montreal, she’s anticipating its release in the next year or two.

A major difference between the new book and her previous two works of fiction is her choice of narrative point of view.

Rather than continuing on using first person, she has adopted third person this time around, giving herself a bit of a break.

“Just being able to leave one person’s head, it’s kind of nice. I feel more like an author somehow when I’m writing third person,” she says.

O’Neill is among the featured authors at the North Shore Writers Festival, back for its 16th year, being presented today and tomorrow

at the West Vancouver Memorial Library. The free celebration of Canadian authors is presented by the West Vancouver library in addition to the City and District of North Vancouver’s.

Tonight’s programming gets underway at 7 p.m., featuring John Vaillant in conversation with Grant Lawrence, followed by the Third Annual Literary Trivia Quiz Night, also hosted by Lawrence.

Saturday programming kicks off at 10 a.m., with a writers workshop and local author book fair, followed by a number of author panels throughout the day; for example, Where Stories Come From: Aislinn Hunter in Conversation with Doretta Lau at 2:45 p.m.

O’Neill will cap off the festival at 4 p.m. in a presentation entitled The Writer Who Is Montreal: Zsuzsi Gartner in Conversation with Heather O’Neill. A public reception will follow.

Big hair bands once ruled the rock world ■ The Big Book of Hair Metal by Martin Popoff.

Strutting on massive heels, sweating in skintight leather outfits beneath heavily applied makeup performers in the many Hair Metal bands in ’80s and into the ’90s rocked the stages around the world.Then like worn out spandex they were discarded as Grunge became mainstream.

In their heyday bands like Quiet Riot, Poison, Def Leppard,Whitesnake and Guns N’ Roses filled stadiums with their guitar heavy power rock. It was a wild ride of indulgence and over the top lifestyles that couldn’t be sustained.

Drawing from years of interviews author Martin Popoff has put together an entertaining look back at a unique offshoot of rock ’n’ roll history. Filled with quotes

from band members of a huge range of groups, Popoff presents them connected to a timeline that coincides with their album releases.

It is fascinating to read the comments and remember the hits they produced.

Loaded with album covers, concert posters, tickets, performance photos and a variety of memorabilia, there is plenty to look at throughout the entire book.

Derek Edwards still remembers the first time he tried his hand at comedy. It didn’t go so hot.

Now one of Canada’s best known comedians, Edwards, who rolls into North Vancouver’s Centennial Theatre April 19, recalls his first time on stage. It was amateur night at a downtown Toronto comedy club, where those wanting to try their hand at being the funny guy were invited to give it a whirl before an audience. Edwards decided to do just that.

“I tried it and, it (was) like bungee jumping, I swear, it’s

so scary the first time on,” Edwards’ good humoured voice (no pun intended) says through the phone. “I had this question for the crowd, which is a stupid thing anyway when you’re just starting out, it (was) like, ‘who here is fromTimmins’ I said, knowing there’d be nobody.”

Turns out there were fellowTimmins natives in the crowd, four guys, hammered drunk in the back of the room that screamed with rowdiness at the mention of their town, eight hours north ofToronto.With that unexpected reaction, Edwards says he was caught off guard and forgot everything he was going to say.

“I dropped the ball. I waited a whole year before I tried it again.”

Founding members Rice (keyboards), Keith Sinclair (guitars) and James Wilfred Martin (saxophone/ clarinet) met five years ago while pursuing their jazz studies degrees at Capilano University. A few years later, when two other members moved on from the band, No Island found itself in rebuilding mode.

Rice recalls recruiting the drummer from Mind of a Child, another North Shore-bred band, and a favourite of No Island. “We would go see them play, and we loved their stuff,” says Rice. “And Max (Ley) was the guy and we sort of headhunted him.”

On No Island’s title

track “Better Days,” Ley seemingly channels Police drummer Stewart Copeland’s classic percussive riff work on “Message In a Bottle.”

Meanwhile, No Island also lucked out when they found fellow Cap U jazz studies grad and keyboard prodigy Jay Esplana. By age six, Esplana had already tickled the ivories on TV, appearing on The Jenny Jones Show and the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon.

“You hold up an instrument and he can play it,” reveals Rice. “He’s one of those guys who can play, drums, bass.”

With their new incarnation and newfound confidence, No Island is poised for a breakout year

on the local music scene.

“Every band goes through the awkward teenager stage — we got through it and came out on the other side,” says Rice.

The new album drops on April 21, but the band has already received accolades for another project. Earlier this month, No Island won second place for their entry — The Eagles’ “One of These Nights” — in LG 104.3 FM’s VanCOVER contest.

“We picked one that was in our wheelhouse,” explains Rice of the song choice for the contest.

“Whenever we tour and play in bars we sprinkle a few covers in there. (“One of These Nights”) is in our blood as a band. It

was kind of a no-brainer.

We’re lucky that we have a guy that can channel Don Henley.”

The cover entry was actually recorded halfway through a rehearsal session one night. One of the guys just instinctively pressed record, and then the song was mixed in a coffee shop a couple days later.

As for what No Island fans can expect from Better Days, according to Rice, the lyrics are very relatable.

Familiar narratives of love, loss and every experience in between are reflected in the music.

“It’s called Better Days for a reason,” says Rice, of the album’s central theme.

“There’s that nostalgia and optimism rolled into one.”

Rooms with her. Grand in scope, the album has an anthemic quality thanks to the addition of a gospel choir, brass quartet, bass clarinet and string orchestra.

“It was nerve-racking for me,” Biali says of putting her original music out there.

“Releasing this album was higher risk than anything I had ever done in the past and so I was both nervous and excited. It almost felt akin to the first day of school.”

Biali has formed a sextet for the cross-Canada album release tour, including herself on piano and vocals and Wittman on drums.Their son Joshua, now almost five, is coming along too.

Though she admits it may sound a tad cliché, Biali says it has always been her goal to take listeners on a journey. She hopes House of Many Rooms achieves that goal.

“My tastes are really diverse and the music is really diverse so we hope that will result in listeners experiencing a great range of colour and emotion and styles that I would love to think about as being a bit of a journey for them,” she says, adding, “We hope that the music will be cathartic for people, that it’ll reach them and connect with them.”

Meanwhile, Biali has already started working on her next jazz album, but is planning another Radiance Project installment after that’s done.

“I’ll be on an alternating schedule with both projects,” she says. “In a perfect world, our best case scenario would be that we capture listeners on both sides and that there’s some crosspollination that happens.”

The hilarious twists he puts on everyday scenarios many experience but few really think of have had audiences in stitches for decades now.The man’s voice alone is funny,

sounding as if he’s waiting to spring a wisecrack at any given moment in his prototypical Canadian accent. Edwards has won awards in both the U.S. and Canada and has been featured extensively in Canada’s Just For Laughs comedy specials. Of 36 contestants (and only Canadian) in the now obsolete Vail National Comedy Invitational in Colorado, Edwards was chosen as the winner in

1995.

His most recent tour, Baloney andWine, comes to town next week and according to the Torontobased comedian it’s supposed to contain a good chunk of new content.

“I’m trying to refurbish and keep things smelling fresh,” he explains. “Most of it’s new, there’s some of the old gems in there, if you’ll be so kind.”

When asked specifically what might be in this year’s

lineup, Edward’s response is modestly vague.To him the whole thing is just about having a good time.

“I’m just going for the funny bone . . . it’s all escapism and whimsy, just out for having fun. Bottom line: the more the merrier. It would be great to have some folks coming out there.”

One of Edward’s favourite things about standup is getting that perfect joke off at just the right timing, however he

admits replicating the joke at future shows for the same reaction is certainly a challenge.

“You have to fine tune it, tweak it, put it in just the right spot for it to come close to the first time, because you gotta have an extra raw energy when you deliver something the first time, and that energy is terror. It’s hard to, post-terror wise, to get the same feedback.”

Despite nearly thirty years on stage and reviews ranging

from “the king of Canadian comedy” to “still the funniest man on earth,” Edwards says he still doesn’t have a “real job” yet.

“I just wanted to put off getting a real job for as long as I could and really I don’t have one yet . . . I swear.”

Tickets to Edwards’ show, which starts at 7:30 p.m., April 19, can be purchased for $44 on Centennial Theatre’s website, over the phone or in person at the theatre’s box office.

The 2015 Honda Pilot is considered by many to be the perfect family vehicle.

The only unfortunate situation is that — while the 2015 model is one of the best SUVs to date — a completely revised 2016 model is on the way.The larger, longer 2016 model is already appearing at auto shows, though it won’t be out in the dealerships for some time.

It might, however, be

a great time to negotiate on a 2015 model — it is somewhat more “utilitarian” in design than the 2016 model and some people might prefer it over the new version, which I think looks too much like a minivan.

Being a midsize SUV, the current Pilot is not too big, allowing it to easily handle heavy traffic or tight parking spaces.Yet it can still comfortably seat as many passengers as a full-size.

Competing against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder and Toyota Highlander, the Honda Pilot stands alone as the only one that can comfortably seat eight.

However, the Pilot does lack some of the latest technological features available in its rivals.

According to well-placed sources, the company is in plans to release a new entry-level model, one powered by a twin-turbo V-6.

With the LaFerrari’s performance already transcending its idiotic name, Ferrari has the halo it needs to move downmarket.

Well, sorta downmarket: this new car is reportedly

a $180,000 competitor for the Porsche 911 Turbo S. Further, even though the Chinese market is a little rocky these days, a smallerdisplacement V-6 of below 3.0 litres would dodge some punitive taxation laws.

And it’s worth noting that Ferrari already developed the turbocharged V-6 used in the Maserati Ghibli.

To crown it all off, there’s the historical precedent set by the Dino.

Not actually labelled a Ferrari, the gorgeous Dino was named for Enzo’s son and values are insanely high for collectible examples at present.The swoopy pre1973 V-6 version is the best, although there’s a certain unlikely charm found in the ‘73-’80 V8-powered wedge.

With much of its range going turbocharged to get past emissions testing, a smaller Ferrari makes all kind of sense.To do it right though, it’ll have to be jawdroppingly beautiful.

Honda kills off Crosstour Speaking of jawdroppingly beautiful, here’s some news about a car that is most emphatically

not that.The odd-looking Honda Crosstour has finally reached the end of its run, with production ceasing for 2016.

Well good riddance, I say.The Crosstour was neither attractive nor particularly practical, managing to be uglier than a Subaru Outback without the go-anywhere appeal.

Sure it was as functional as a regular Honda Accord, but with the Pilot and CR-V in the lineup (and the HR-V on the way; and two Acura crossovers if you wanted to go upscale), the Crosstour remained unloved.

Sales were initially disappointing four years ago, and just declined from there.Why didn’t they make it more like a Honda Accord wagon? Or a copy of the Volvo XC70 with better Honda reliability?

Crosstour, we hardly knew ye. But get lost.

Honda fans rejoice! Civic Type-R is coming!

OK, so never mind the bulbous discontinued crossover — here’s some really juicy news. In a

surprise unveiling at the NYIAS, Honda took the wraps off a brightgreen Civic Concept and announced that turbocharged Civics were coming soon.

Honda’s concept vehicles are almost always thinly disguised production models (apart from that humanoid robot thing they have), and the limegreen model shown was pure Fast and Furious.The further announcement that a version of the Euro-spec, 306 h.p. Civic Type-R was coming in a few years sent Honda hearts racing into VTEC. For the more practicalminded Honda lover, the Civic Hatchback is returning (finally!), in the same form as the European versions, and the new sedans will have a punchy 1.5-litre turbo to hopefully produce better torque and slightly improved mileage.

I’m less super-enthused about this last bit as turbocharged engines often give decent mileage on paper and then suck down the fuel in the real world.

Mercedes-Benz pickup truck on the way You tend to forget that in most parts of the world Mercedes-Benz isn’t a premium brand; they just happen to make premium cars. For example, the Sprinter van might seem a little more upscale than a Ram Promaster, but overseas it’s just another delivery vehicle.

That’s why the announcement of an upcoming MercedesRenault collaboration on a pickup truck shouldn’t seem so ridiculous. It kind of does though — will there be an AMG version with portal axles for one million billion dollars? I kinda hope so.

Don’t expect to see this German cowboy any time soon. It’ll be built in Spain and Argentina, and kept mostly in Europe and South America with exports to Australia. However, the Nissan NP300 platform it’s based on will likely be our replacement for the Frontier. So you just know somebody’s going to

Already available as a hatchback in Europe, we’ll likely get this little turbocharged tyke as a sedan.Why? Because Americans like sedans and Canadians always get lumped in with ‘em, even though we are a totally separate and distinct market with a fondness for plaid and hats with ear flaps.

There’ll be all-wheel drive, of course, and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and it’ll likely be really rather expensive. A stick shift version is not to be expected, and once again you can lay the blame at the feet of those hosers below the 49th parallel.

Thumbs up The Pilot’s strength lies in its versatility.The second row not only reclines, but slides forward and back to accommodate passengers in the third row. Its overall

feel is more SUV-like than others with a muscular feel.

Thumbs down Those looking for the latest technological advances will need to look elsewhere.

The bottom line If you are looking for a midsize SUV, but need maximum seating capacity and flexibility, the Honda Pilot checks all the boxes with a great road feel.
