The 2020 North range is the result of taking every piece of kiteboarding kit apart, analysing it and thinking about how it could work harder, faster and stronger. We had the opportunity to look at everything from another angle, a new perspective and a new approach. Then we reverse-engineered every detail. We compiled the best of the best - attributes, components, elements, materials. We found new suppliers and manufacturers, new ways of making things more to our liking. It’s been all about recalibration – finding the right combinations and ratios for power, stability, control and balance. Our team of designers and engineers have sweated the small stuff so we get the lift, the power, the control. Every North product is about balance and harmony. We’ve asked ourselves: how can we create the strongest and the most flexible? The simplest and the most technical? The most advanced with a light footprint? The greatest performance that remains intuitive?

The North design process starts and finishes on the water. We’re always answering the question: ‘How can we make it simpler?’ A huge part of our design process has been considering what we can get rid of. At North we’re all about simplifying, about paring everything back for pure performance. With the 2020 collection, we’ve designed everything to strike the perfect balance between

We’ve refined the details with mechanical finesse right down to the noise our connections and fastenings make. Our kites are a great example of our philosophy of refinement. In designing the 2020 range we tested every product in the market and that analysis led us to fine-tune every aspect of every kite - profile, load and construction, to optimise performance. Our kites have been refined not to within inches, but to within millimetres. We want a lighter footprint for ourselves and the planet. We firmly believe that when your engineering is sharp and every detail is recalibrated and fine-tuned to the Nth degree then less is very much more.

Every product has been recalibrated so they work together harmoniously, for more direct response, more command and performance, for a more effortless experience. challenge is getting the actual kite in the sky to be the same as the one you have designed on the computer.
Using modern profile analysis software to put some data behind the engine has enabled us to go deeper into aerodynamic performance and to optimise the shape of the kites for greater efficiency. By testing different profile attack angles as well as different profile alignment to the airflow, we’ve been able to take a new direction for optimum performance, creating a premier range of kites.
If it was purely aerodynamics then all kite designers would be aeronautical engineers - but this is not the case. There’s a lot of handcrafting and understanding about building wings from flexible materials which can only be obtained from years of experience (and thousands of prototypes).
Working with woven and flexible materials is a real challenge in aerodynamics. Nothing ever comes out exactly how you design it on screen - the biggest
The stability of these materials also makes a great difference in the accuracy of your prototyping. We’ve tested some materials that are so inconsistent we’ve found ourselves judging problems in the kite that were not created from the design, but from irregularities in the materials - especially in an inflated structure.
It’s important to have stable bridle material that is accurately assembled from the very get-go. Firstly, you want it to be consistent from kite to kite, and secondly, you want it to change as little as possible over time. We’ve carefully analysed and tested our bridle lines to find the best combination of stability, strength and durability. Then we’ve introduced a new way for the factory to pre-load these as they manufacture - before they cut them. This automation allows us to greatly tighten the tolerance and accuracy, and combined with using the best quality materials, results in a very low change in either shrinkage or elongation and improved longevity. The kite should feel the same for a longer period of time. Since we don’t use any pulleys in our bridles, the need for this stable bridle line is even more important. Simplified. Less breakage. The more bells and whistles you have, the more there is to go wrong, especially on the water. All of our kites use fixed-cascade bridles with no pulleys. Removing the plastic pulleys from within the load-bearing part of the kite improves the safety and your connection to the kite. The result is less drag, more accuracy and a more direct feeling. Without pulleys, the kite powers more evenly and has improved steering and depower response. This accuracy improves your experience and helps you feel more connected to your gear.
I personally ride and test every prototype I make, and I’m the biggest critic. Before it leaves my hands, I have to be satisfied with it.

Pat’s understanding of construction techniques and the complexity of 3D kite design software make him the authority in his field. The thousands of hours that he’s clocked on the beach and the multitude of kite prototypes he’s developed over the years has given Goodman true hands-on experience in developing and testing sails, kites and their related products, which he does personally with his test team and pro riders. Goodman’s trained eye enables him to meticulously refine a kite’s bridling and performance on the spot, working alongside some of the industry’s top riders to assist the flow between rider and nature for a better experience and higher performance.

EFFICIENCY A wide span, flattened arc kite like the Orbit Freeride makes the most use of its area, so it has the best hangtime and the best power delivery for its size.
As the arc shape becomes narrower the kite uses less of it’s area to provide actual power and efficiency. A smaller turning radius kite like the Carve is fast in flight, with less power overall.

REINFORCED DACRON EXO-SKELETON A durable frame around the perimeter of the kite made from stretch-resistant Techno Force 160gsm Dacron material. The Exoskeleton helps the transition where the Kevlar reinforced strut system meets the lighter canopy material. The Connect. Our patented quick release system with intuitive single-action reload. We’ve always had this dream of the Connect System being as easy to load and release as a car seatbelt. You push, and you click. The problem is, a seatbelt won’t release when there’s a load on it.
Our North Design team has been searching for the past 15 years, but every other product with a quick reset is designed to hold with high forces. Our control system has to reset easily and be released while under high load, with a low release load. It’s a tough set of requirements. Our primary objective in evolving the quick release system is safety, but we also want the customer experience to be intuitive.
The Connect is designed to reload from any angle,
being pulled onto a reef with waves crashing over you, you’re the only one out there. If you can’t reconnect, you’re in trouble. A further design complication is the harsh sand and saltwater environment which means you need to strip everything back as much as possible. If the tolerances are too tight, and there’s sand throughout, the components will not release. So much mechanical finesse, load-testing and material knowledge has gone into the development of the Connect Quick Release, ensuring it meets our demanding safety criteria. The end result raises the industry standard as a whole. We’ve developed and refined the entire Navigator Control System harmoniously from the ground up, providing a premium user experience that is simple, intuitive and refined - right down to the sound of the closure. Hugh’s inspiration comes from being out in nature, from kiteboarding, a sport that demands you are fully present and in the moment. Hugh believes in the balance of yin and yang – the power and simplicity of nature meeting the energy and progressive push of technology. As kiteboarding matures he sees the tendency in the industry to keep adding to design and functionality but believes that can lead to complexity for complexity’s sake. He believes that the key is to identify exactly what is needed and remove what is not, crafting every detail with fine precision. PAULOWNIA WOOD CORE Lightweight and impact resistant Paulownia wood core. Paulownia is a highly renewable hardwood species, with one of the highest strength to weight ratios of any wood in the world. Ultra lightweight, with a high shear force and high impact resistance, Paulownia wood forms a non-toxic core which significantly displaces the amount of foam or resin used in manufacturing, thereby reducing carbon emissions. Each board has a customised core thickness individually fine-tuned to ensure its characteristics are consistent throughout the range, no matter your size or weight.

If you use an industry standard soft foam material underfoot, when you land hard it’s going to bottom out and bruise your heel. Instead, we’ve used a triple density foam built up in three layers: soft touch under your feet with a medium density frame to take most of the load, then for serious impact we’ve added a high-density layer which is over-moulded together with the medium density.

FUTURELITE SYSTEM A carbon fibre and Innegra wire-frame forms a structural skeleton which supports the laminates but allows the boards to flex, so as to load and release generating power from the wave and a kite.

40cm Mast: Our 40cm School mast, for those firsttime feels, is an ultra-forgiving mast height suitable for skimming just above the water line and easy recovery.
70cm Mast: Choose the 70cm mast for prone foil surfing in waves. The 70cm is also an ideal height for learning to kitefoil, and for freeride foiling in shallow waters.

GEOLOCK In traditional industry foil setups, the mast simply bolts to the fuselage. But we found foils coming back from product testing with all the screws bent. We needed to design a more effective load-bearing system to lock the mast to the fuselage.

Drawing from yacht design, and specifically keelboat racing, our Product Manager Uli Somerlatt engineered a unique geometry locking connection, using a tapered composite fuselage adaptor to sit between the mast and the fuselage. The screws engage the GeoLock, making the load transfer more effective and preventing the fitting from loosening over time.
The composite adaptor between the mast and fuselage helps to isolate the contact between the metal parts, and minimises the risk of corrosion by salt water, ensuring a more durable and long lasting connection. 99 ULI SOMMERLATT
