EDUCATION THROUGH INNOVATION FOR A UNIQUE TIME With education programs adapted to a digital format—and new programs created to meet the needs of the time—the North Carolina Symphony expanded our reach to students and learners of all ages.

Serving Students 100,000 students in 100 North Carolina counties accessed North Carolina Symphony education programs thanks to our continued adaptation to the digital format, which began at the onset of the pandemic. Our virtual Education Concert, Ensembles in the Schools videos, and online lesson plans taught elementary school students fundamentals of music like melody, rhythm, and dynamics. Over Zoom, our musicians read stories and led sing-alongs with preschool students at virtual Music Discovery programs (part of PNC’s Grow Up Great program) and coached young instrumentalists at our Tune-Up Workshops. We released six videos in our new Meet the Instruments series sponsored by MetLife Foundation and Puffin Foundation West, introducing students to the instruments of the orchestra and the musicians who play them. The series aired on PBS North Carolina, in addition to being distributed to teachers around the state and to the public online.

Inspiring Citizen Artistry: One State, One Score At the North Carolina Symphony, music education means music for life—and so, at the height of the pandemic, we invited North Carolina citizens of all ages to join in a virtual performance of the “Ode to Joy” melody from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, sponsored by UNC Health. Altogether, 1,415 people shared their talents—playing instruments, singing, dancing, and responding to the music with visual art. We received video submissions from diverse North Carolinians from the mountains to the coast, from 400+ school classrooms, and from Symphony musicians and staff. With more than 30 types of instruments represented, as well as beautiful choreography and artwork, the spectacular outpouring of creativity seen in the video compilation brought North Carolinians together even while we were apart.

Partnering with Teachers Music educators from across the state gathered at our Wells Fargo Foundation Teacher Workshop, sharing lesson plans to prepare students for the Education Concert. This year, the workshop was held online, but the inspiring exchange of ideas remained the same. To further support teachers adjusting to online or hybrid classrooms, we launched our Adopt-a-School program: NCS musicians were paired with nearly 100 schools, serving more than 17,000 students with online visits. Throughout the year, musicians collaborated closely with partner classroom teachers, tailoring their activities and teaching approaches to the needs of each school and set of students.

Thanks to all that made the Adopt-a-School program possible. It was a highlight in my students’ music education in an otherwise very challenging year.

Thank you to the State of North Carolina, lead education sustainer Truist Foundation, and many other generous supporters for making our music education programs possible.

ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE FROM NEW PERSPECTIVES The concert experience looked different, yet the North Carolina Symphony’s artistry continued to impact the lives of people across the globe.

Going Digital The North Carolina Symphony began our 2020/21 season—and it was an Opening Night like never before. The concert was streamed to more people than could have fit in any of our concert halls and featured chamber music groups representing every section of the orchestra. Thank you to Digitial Initiatives Supporter MetLife for helping make our streaming concerts possible. Our virtual concerts on YouTube allowed us to deliver the same variety of offerings found in a typical season—Classical, Pops, Friday Favorites, Holiday, and Young People’s Concerts—and the exceptional musicianship earned high praise from audience members and the press.

Focusing the Spotlight In addition to welcoming guest artists such as Branford Marsalis, James Ehnes, Natasha Paremski, and Augustin Hadelich, our North Carolina Symphony musicians stepped into the spotlight like never before, further revealing their star power. Our audience had the opportunity to hear the performers’ individual musical voices with chamber music concerts—and, when circumstances allowed us to again perform as an orchestra, with North Carolina Symphony musicians as featured soloists.

Discovering Different Views While nothing can replace a live performance, the Symphony created ways to make the online concert experience engaging for audiences. With NCS cellist Nathaniel Yaffe as film and recording engineer, thoughtful camerawork allowed for new views into the orchestra—for example, close-ups of musicians during their key moments in the music helped to guide listening. Associate Principal Oboe and English Horn Joseph Peters took on the role of concert host, providing audiences with a greater understanding of the repertoire, and NCS musicians joined Joseph in filmed interviews, sharing their unique perspectives on the programs.

Sharing Moments of Peace During a difficult year, people turned to music not just for entertainment but as a source of comfort. Hearing from educators, business leaders, and medical professionals that a focus on mental health had become more important than ever, NCS created the Musical Meditations series that, quite literally, shared music from a new viewpoint. Developed in partnershp with the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, presented by UNC Health, and sponsored by Triangle Community Foundation, the series of 10 videos paired brief excerpts of recordings from the Symphony archives with breathtaking footage from North Carolina State Parks, providing viewers with a backdrop for meditation and reflection.

Coming Back Together When the time was right, the Symphony was thrilled to perform in the company of our patrons again. An outpouring of excitement and joy was felt in Meymandi Concert Hall, Raleigh, when we first invited small, socially distanced audiences to join us in April. Returning to Koka Booth Amphitheatre in June for UNC Health Summerfest, audience members spread out with their picnic blankets to enjoy orchestral programs—and we also resumed statewide travel over the summer, performing outdoor Concerts in Your Community in New Bern and Chapel Hill.

The interviews [during the concerts] have made me feel more connected to the people and talent in the orchestra.” —THOMAS PATRICK 2 0 2 1 RE POR T TO TH E COMMU N IT Y 7

CONTINUED CONNECTIONS WITH OUR AUDIENCE Online and in the Community A loyal audience and strong marketing campaign made NCS one of the leading orchestras in the country for streaming concert ticket sales. •

2,543 households, including many from outside North Carolina, subscribed to the season.

23% of season-ticket subscribers and 12% of single-ticket buyers were brand new to the Symphony.

Our virtual concerts received 156,415 total screen views.

You are bringing back lovely memories— my wife and I heard Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed in Venice and in Prague. Spectacular execution tonight! Thank you! —MIKE PIERCE

Moved from Boston to Cary and this is my first chance to view the NC Symphony. Wonderful performance and can’t wait to sit in the hall in person in the near future! —LORI WEBBER

UNPRECEDENTED SUPPORT FROM OUR FRIENDS Above and Beyond

Corporate, foundation, and government partners stepped up in notable ways—allowing for greater flexibility with the terms of their sponsorships and even helping to increase viewership for our concerts. •

Retirement communities including Galloway Ridge at Fearrington and Penick Village streamed concerts in common areas of their residences; Young People’s Concert Series Sponsor WakeMed Children’s provided patients with access to streaming concerts from their hospital beds; and numerous corporate sponsors, such as First Citizens Bank and Duke Health, shared our digital concert links and videos with their employees and clients.

Many foundation supporters, corporate sponsors, individuals, and government partners adjusted previously designated gifts to unrestricted status, allowing the Symphony to use the funds to meet the most pressing needs of the time.

Symphony donors continued to demonstrate remarkable commitment to the Symphony’s mission through this challenging time. •

More donors made gifts to the Symphony in the 2020/21 season than in any other season over the past 10+ years.

Support came from individuals in 63 North Carolina counties—and even from 28 other U.S. states!

Repeatedly, we heard stories from Symphony friends who expressed their desire to do as much as they could to support the Symphony, despite their own changed financial circumstances.

SOUND FINANCES FOR RECOVERY

FY 2017

$18,630,365

The pandemic had a dramatic impact on the Symphony’s income—and in response to the significant reduction in ticket sales and event income, we reduced our expense budget by $5.9 million, including nearly $2 million in voluntary salary reductions.

FY 2018

$ 19,555,356

FY 2019

$ 30,308,974

FY 2020

$ 30,494,568

FY 2021

$ 37,156,358

Federal assistance programs, support from the State of North Carolina, and special contributions were important in mitigating a portion of our income loss—together with the generosity of patrons who continued to support NCS during these challenging times. Having carefully managed our finances in FY2021, the Symphony is positioned for recovery in future seasons.
