The North Carolina Symphony family pays tribute to the extraordinary life of Dr. Assad Meymandi, who passed in May 2024. Dr. Meymandi was a noted philanthropist, an accomplished physician, a dedicated lover of the arts, and a friend to many.
He played a pivotal role in the Symphony’s life, not only in providing the City of Raleigh with funds to develop Meymandi Concert Hall, but also in watching over his beloved orchestra from Box 1 (pictured on the right) at each Friday and Saturday performance since the hall opened in 2001. His desire to share his passion for the arts was evident as oftentimes he would invite community leaders to join him in experiencing the power of live orchestral music.
We miss him immensely and celebrate the music he loved through our commitment to excellence as the state’s orchestra, a legacy that will live on for years to come.

EDUCATION PERFORMANCES ACROSS THE STATE
STUDENTS SERVED THROUGH NCS EDUCATION PROGRAM
OF FRIENDS OF NOTE RAISING FUNDS FOR MUSIC EDUCATION
Week in and week out, North Carolina Symphony concerts dazzled audiences across the state with the exceptional skill and artistry of our musicians and guest artists.
Principal Second Violinist Jacqueline Saed Wolborsky took center stage to perform Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in her curated classical favorites program; guest artist William Eddins conducted and performed the iconic Rhapsody in Blue, celebrating the work’s 100th anniversary; and the orchestra gave powerful performances of orchestral masterworks including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring
In his first year as Music Director, the artistic partnership between Carlos Miguel Prieto and the musicians of the North Carolina Symphony was palpable in performances at venues large and small in counties across the state, connecting communities through music. Performances with Carlos surprised and delighted audiences as the orchestra collaborated with guest artists from around the globe. Well-known works complemented the voices of composers we have not often played. In all that we are accomplishing, we remain committed to our education mission and statewide service.
“Maestro Prieto is so delightful, so obviously loved by the players and audiences. I’ve never had so much fun at a concert.”
NCS PATRON
“The new conductor has a history of mixing styles, drawing audiences in with classical favorites like Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 (which was played during the second half of the concert), then hitting them with something new like New Orleans swing.”
JASMINE
GALLUP, INDY WEEK
Throughout the 2023/24 season, guest artists shared the stage with us, enhancing our performances with their unique talents.
• During opening weekend, audiences were treated to energetic performances with Pacho Flores on trumpet— including a triple encore.
• The holiday season included A Candlelight Christmas in partnership with the Raleigh Youth Choir.
• Augustin Hadelich’s unparalleled technique was on full display as he performed Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor with Orange Blossom Special as an encore, to the delight of our Raleigh audiences.
• Kristin Chenoweth brought Broadway to Meymandi Concert Hall with a show-stopping performance featuring selections from Wicked; Glee; You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown; and more.
• 55 PNC Grow Up Great Music Discovery programs performed in 41 counties
• More than 51,000 students attended 44 Education Concerts across the state
In November, the North Carolina Symphony recognized three outstanding educators for their meaningful connections with students, their contributions to the school and larger community, and their service as role models for music education. These annual awards are funded by the Jennie H. Wallace Music Educator Award Fund.
LEFT TO RIGHT: Li Ying Noell of Rashkis Elementary in Orange County, Colin Tapp of Brogden Middle School in Durham County, and Dr. Zadda Bazzy of Queens Creek Elementary School in Onslow County.
In May, more than 100 students from Triangle Youth Music rehearsed Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite alongside musicians of the North Carolina Symphony. This educational opportunity allowed professional musicians to offer comments and suggestions to the students as they rehearsed, fostering a collaborative and enriching experience.
Our annual Teacher Workshop engaged over 500 educators statewide, offering professional development both in person and online. The workshop provided curriculum-aligned lessons and activities designed to help prepare students for the 2023/24 Education Concerts.
THANK YOU TO THE STATE OF NORTH
“The students loved learning about the stories behind each piece and making connections to other stories they know. The workshop lessons were so good I have been using them for the whole school. It was fabulous!”
At this year’s fun-filled and sensory-friendly performance, NCS welcomed audience members of all abilities. Accommodations included quiet spaces, ASL interpretations and audio descriptions, Braille, and large print programs—everything needed to support audience members with autism and other sensory sensitivities. The orchestra dressed in colorful t-shirts to allow audience members to identify the sections of the orchestra.
NCS served all 100 counties in 2023/24 through in-person and online programs.
• The Symphony served Lincoln, Gaston, Haywood, Swain, Burke, Cleveland, and Cabarrus counties with extensive music education programs and performed free community concerts in Lincoln, Swain, and Cabarrus counties as part of our Western Residency, supported by the State of North Carolina and the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
• Students explored the science of sound at the Qualla Boundary Head Start.
“I saw so much enthusiasm by the students to get up, dance, clap and cheer.”
ORANGE COUNTY EDUCATOR
• Serving Edgecombe County through a music education residency generously supported by The Anonymous Trust/Simple Gifts fund, the Symphony performed Education Concerts and presented Ensembles in the Schools and a visit by NCS Composer in Residence Dr. Anthony Kelley, speaking with students about his life and career in music.
• NCS musicians performed an Education Concert in Windsor.
• The Filling Station food pantry hosted a PNC Grow Up Great Music Discovery program.
• As part of an extensive residency along the Outer Banks supported by the Bryan Cultural Series and the Outer Banks Community Foundation, the Symphony’s woodwind quintet performed for K-12 students at the Ocracoke School.

The Lamar Stringfield Society, named in honor of the founding music director of the North Carolina Symphony, celebrates Legacy Donors, individuals who have included the North Carolina Symphony in their estate plans, and the donors who have made significant contributions to name a musician’s chair or endowed a special fund.
For more information about the Lamar Stringfield Society or to make changes to the lists, please contact Emily Wilbourne, Leadership Giving Manager, at ewilbourne@ ncsymphony.org or 919.789.5506 or Lisa Ransom, Vice President of Philanthropy, at eransom@ ncsymphony.org or 919.789.5487.
The North Carolina Symphony remembers a dear friend and member of the Lamar Stringfield Society, Tracey Fodor Smith (August 30, 1950 – March 9, 2024). She was generous in her service as a Society Board Trustee from 2000 to 2024, in her dedication to the Symphony’s mission, and in her passionate support. She is greatly missed.

Named musician chairs are made possible through very meaningful gifts to the Symphony’s endowment. As such, these donor families are also members of the Lamar Stringfield Society.
All string players rotate stands on a periodic basis in each section with the exception of titled players: Principals, Associate Principals, and Assistant Principals.
The North Carolina Symphony is a member of the League of American Orchestras and the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians. The North Carolina Master Chorale is the Resident Chorus of the North Carolina Symphony
The North Carolina Symphony is grateful for the generous support of the many corporations across the state that partner with us to sustain and advance the mission of the orchestra
