ABOUT THE ARTISTS Sarah Hicks, conductor Sarah Hicks has collaborated with artists from Hilary Hahn and Dmitri Hvorostovsky to Rufus Wainwright, Jennifer Hudson, and Smokey Robinson. She has toured with Sting as conductor of his Symphonicities Tour in 2011, and recorded a 2019 album with rap artist Dessa and the Minnesota Orchestra, where she is Principal Conductor of Live at Orchestra Hall. Associate Conductor of the North Carolina Symphony from 2007 to 2010, Sarah has conducted ensembles including The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Pops Orchestra, Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. A specialist in film music, Sarah’s live concert recordings have aired on Disney+ (A Celebration of the Music from Coco) and ABC (The Little Mermaid). Her program of film music with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, The Morricone Duel, was released as an album in 2018 and has more than 80 million views on YouTube. Sarah was on faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music from 2000 to 2005 and Staff Conductor until 2012. Her interest in the intersection of mental health and music led to a concert titled Music and the Mind, and continues through blogs, online advocacy, and development of a Musical Mindfulness course. Born in Tokyo and raised in Honolulu, Sarah trained on both the piano and the viola and was a prizewinning pianist by her early teens. She holds degrees from Harvard University and the Curtis Institute of Music. In her spare time, she enjoys running, hiking, her Papillon dog, cooking (and eating) with her husband, traveling, and blogging. John Ilika, trombone The Thomas Warwick Steed, Jr. Family Chair North Carolina Symphony Principal Trombone since 2001, John Ilika has also held principal trombone positions with the Pennsylvania Ballet, Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware, Florida Music Festival, and the Philadelphia Brass (quintet). He played for three years with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Maracaibo in Venezuela, and has performed and recorded with The Philadelphia Orchestra.

John lives in Garner with his violinist wife, Ariadna, and their two children, Tristan and Zofia. Emily Rist Glover, violin Emily Glover joined the North Carolina Symphony in 2015. In recent seasons she has played regularly with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Colorado Music Festival. She spends her summers with the Central City Opera orchestra. She was Concertmaster of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra from 2013 to 2016, and has held principal positions with the Castleton Festival Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, and Brevard Symphony Orchestra. Emily has appeared as soloist with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra, National Repertory Orchestra, and Furman Symphony Orchestra. She has performed on chamber music concerts presented by the Symphony and has been a guest artist for the Talking Music series at UNC-Chapel Hill. A native of Lynchburg, Virginia, Emily holds degrees from Furman University and Boston University. She lives in Cary with her husband, David, and daughter, Maia. Joseph Peters, host Joseph Peters has been North Carolina Symphony Associate Principal Oboe and English Horn since 2018, and previously held Principal Oboe chairs with the Minnesota Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. To his role as host for this season’s streaming concerts, Joseph brings a great love for teaching and communication. He has also conducted the Symphony twice, most recently for Music From the Movies in March.

In 1992, with the Delaware Symphony, John commissioned and premiered the Trombone Concerto by Kile Smith, Curator of the Fleisher Collection of the Free Library of Philadelphia. He holds degrees from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts (now the University of the Arts). Teaching posts include the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem and Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, along with institutions in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Venezuela.
