presidential greeting
Welcome to our 2022 Commencement ceremony. This has been an incredible year of renewal, recovery, and rediscovery for our NCU family. We are so proud of the resiliency you have shown in your academic careers, and we believe your futures are bright. We want to congratulate you and the family and friends who have walked alongside you on this journey. Your achievement is an important moment for all of you, and NCU has been blessed to walk alongside you as we have dedicated ourselves to producing leaders with the skills, vision, and humility to impact the world. Our work as your university may be done, but your work, now as NCU alumni, has just begun—and you have our prayers. We pray that you are now prepared to live in service to God and that He will use you for His Kingdom and glory. Graduates, today you join thousands of students who have attended NCU and are dispersed throughout the world, utilizing their gifts and talents for the common good. We honor The Class of 2022 and give praise and thanks to God for the good work He has done. Looking forward,
Scott Hagan, Ph.D.
our heritage Located in the heart of Minneapolis, North Central University is operated by 11 Assemblies of God districts of the upper Midwest. Founded in 1930 as North Central Bible Institute, program offerings were expanded in 1955 to include a four-year degree. In 1957, the name was changed to North Central Bible College, and in 1964, North Central was accredited by the American Association of Bible Colleges. Recognizing its commitment to the needs of its constituents, North Central continued expanding its offerings and was accredited in 1986 by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of College and Schools. At the spring 1998 meeting of the Board of Regents, the college’s name was changed to North Central University. Today NCU offers 60+ areas of undergraduate study on our residential campus in downtown Minneapolis, plus an expanding selection of undergraduate and graduate-level degree programs and courses offered online and through academic partnerships and Jakes Divinity School.
the faculty marshal The presiding Faculty Marshal is Dr. Lon Flippo, Associate Dean of the College of Church Leadership, and Director and Professor in the School of Pastoral Studies. The Faculty Marshal is an honor bestowed upon a member of the faculty who has served North Central University with distinction and has an academic rank of Professor. The Faculty Marshal is elected by their peers. Dr. Flippo has been with North Central University since 2014. Dr. Flippo holds a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in Family Ministries, from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, a Master of Biblical Literature from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary and a Master of Communication from Missouri State University. He is a published author and respected speaker in his field and has ongoing research in the areas of spiritual training of children and families. Credentialed in 1985 and ordained in 1987 with the Assemblies of God, Dr. Flippo pastored for more than 30 years in a variety of roles. He has a passion for inspiring parents to pass their faith on to their children—and for providing information and insight to accomplish the task. He is the author of “Soul Survivor,” “iParent: Parenting prodigals and children in the 21st Century,” “Sepulcher,” “Walking through the Ruins,” “The Satan Project,” and “Flippo and the Miserable Meanies.” Dr. Flippo hails from the plains of Kansas. He and his wife, Chris, have been married for 35 years and have two children and three grandchildren. Visit his website at iparentnow.com.
commencement speaker professor larry bach, m.m.
With today’s ceremony, Professor Larry Bach, M.M. concludes his 41st and final year at North Central University. During his 41 years at the school, Bach served as Chair of the Music Department, Dean of the College of Fine Arts, and short stints as a coach for the golf and tennis teams. Bach began his career teaching several classes and the Concert Chorale. The Chorale was the only choral ensemble when he arrived in 1981, but soon after, he established another mixed choir and the Women’s Choir. Over the years, Bach was able to lead the College of Fine Arts in establishing nine different majors and realizing the growth of the fine arts program to more than 150 students. In the early 2000s, when the College of Fine Arts moved to Mensing Hall, Bach helped secure funding to establish the McPherson Recording Studio and the Liechty Computer Lab, giving NCU music students state-of-the-art music technology to enhance their education. In 2010, Bach established the College of Fine Arts Endowment with a goal of $1 million, which has since grown to more than $700,000. The endowment will bring distinguished guests to campus, support tours and technology, and help fund WOVEN, a music lesson and mentoring program for children in the Elliot Park neighborhood, which Bach helped pioneer in 2002. Bach has received recognition from his colleagues at NCU for outstanding
service, and from his peers nationally, receiving the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award for Assemblies of God Colleges and Universities. Bach was the primary worship leader for North Central chapels and oversaw all touring groups for many years. He established the touring groups Living Sacrifice, One Accord, and Worship Live. Bach also initiated the first Worship Live recording that included original songs written for worship in daily chapel services. Outside of North Central, Bach sang for more than 20 years with the internationally acclaimed Dale Warland Singers, for which he also served as assistant conductor. He has been a worship leader or choir director for multiple churches throughout the Twin Cities, served as music director for the Assemblies of God Minnesota District, and guest-conducted or adjudicated at countless festivals at the high-school and collegiate levels. While taking on an impressive variety of assignments and classes, the one constant during Bach’s time at NCU has been conducting the Chorale. In addition to concerts and events on campus, the NCU Chorale has toured extensively in the United States and overseas, performing in churches, schools, and concert halls. Under his direction, the Chorale has made multiple recordings and has toured more than 20 times overseas on mission trips. The Chorale has also had the honor to perform three times at the historic Carnegie Hall. Larry and his wife, Jerilyn, look forward to retirement and spending more time with their children and grandchildren.
chair, board of regents shawn dockter Shawn Dockter attended North Central in 1989 before transferring to the University of Minnesota to earn a degree in aerospace engineering. He then launched into a career that has taken many twists and turns, before he became the CEO of Heggie’s Pizza, a Minnesota-based food company. Dockter has been on the NCU Board of Regents since 2018 and began serving as the chair of the board in 2021. As the first chair in North Central’s history who is not a vocational minister, Dockter sees his role as striking the balance of preserving the heritage of Spirit-filled education while continuing to innovate and expand to meet the needs of 21st-century learners.

academic apparel history
The history of academic apparel dates back to medieval European universities of the fourteenth century. European universities continue to follow varied patterns in cut and color of gown and type of headdress. In the United States, colleges and universities have standardized the academic attire so its features are common and uniform throughout the country. Academic apparel lends dignity to commencement and other university ceremonies and indicates academic achievement through the style of gowns, hoods, medals, tassels, and colors. The standard attire in the United States is as follows:
gowns
The pattern of the gown varies with the degree held: pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s
degree; long, closed sleeves with a slit for the arms for the master’s degree; and round, open sleeves for the doctor’s degree. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet and three bars across the sleeves.
hood
Hoods are the most significant conveyors of degree identification. Hoods are lined with the colors of the school granting the degree. The velvet color trim designates the subject of the degree: Arts and Letters is white; Theology is scarlet; Music is pink; Library Science is lemon; Philosophy is dark blue; Science is gold/yellow; Education is light blue; Journalism is crimson; and Business Administration is drab.
cap
The standard cap is the Oxford cap, better known as the mortarboard. The cap is an essential part of academic attire and is retained on the head throughout all academic exercises except during prayer.
medals
Medals signify special honors from Psi Chi Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society, Sigma Beta Delta, ASLHS, and Alpha Chi Honor Society.
honor cords
The gold cord is worn in recognition of superior scholastic achievement.
significance of the mace
The mace is a ceremonial insignia of the university in a tradition which dates back to the twelfth century. The mace combines the scepter of royalty and the battle club of the Middle Ages. The scepter stands for lawful power and authority. Designs of academic maces vary from institution to institution, but usually consist of a shaft topped with a large ornament representing the symbols of that institution’s traditions and history. The mace stands as an example of the university’s strengths and is carried by the Faculty Marshal at official university events.
british academic attire
The standards for academic dress in the United Kingdom vary from those observed in the United States. Robes are traditionally worn open at the front, and colors may designate different disciplines than those described above. For example, a degree in Theology may be designated by an electric blue trim.
