HE VALUE OF ANY organization is rooted in the mission and history that it shares with its members. North Central University is uniquely rich in this regard, because for 81 years we have partnered with our students in the shaping of their character, ministry and careers. We have the privilege of facilitating the beginning of individual’s stories and then cheering those students on as they grow into their dreams, build families and invest into their communities after graduation. We love to hear the ongoing stories of our alumni from each decade since North Central began in 1930. Now we are excited to announce a significant development in the University that will bring added value to our partners from every era.

SPECIAL

North Central has reached a new milestone in its development into a university that is recognized worldwide. We have reorganized the University into four distinct colleges: the College of Ministry, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, and the College of Missions. Each of these colleges will be led by a dean who will provide leadership and general oversight, with particular attention given to new program development, fund raising, alumni relations, and career placement.

We are excited for all generations of North Central partners to join us in welcoming this monumental step in the growth of our institution. We are excited about this development and believe that it will enable us to move ahead with our commitment to academic excellence, spiritual vitality, and the preparation of outstanding graduates to serve in both church and non-church vocational settings. I am proud to be a part of this university, and so excited for you to join the present generation of students, faculty, staff and Board of Regents members in celebrating an even brighter future!

10 FOUR NEW COLLEGES, ONE UNIVERSITY VISION

North Central has outstanding leaders! The leaders who serve as deans will be able to provide visionary direction, guiding each college toward greater accomplishments more than ever before. The College of Fine Arts, for example, has already raised nearly $400,000 towards a goal of a one million dollar endowment fund. This Fine Arts Endowment will provide, among other benefits, the resources to bring the finest worship leaders and Christian artists to campus. The College of Missions has formed a partnership with Assemblies of God World Missions to prepare and send missionary pioneers to the most unreached people groups in the world – Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists. This college teaches Mandarin and Arabic, and has developed a curriculum that will prepare Apostolic, “tentmaker” missionaries who will be able to enter the most restricted countries in the world with a new model of Kingdom ministries. The College of Ministry is consolidating its departments to form a new structure that will enable them to strengthen North Central’s ministry preparation curriculum and partner more strategically with the churches of our movement. The College of Arts & Sciences is expanding pre-professional programs and has also integrated the Bible curriculum and the Bible and Theology major into the college as well – a great accomplishment that adds depth to the integration of faith and learning at North Central.

Chorale performs at Carnegie Hall

The North Central University Chorale performed at Carnegie Hall on May 21, 2011 as part of the Masterworks Festival Chorus. The Chorale sang with a large group under the direction of Dr. Bradley Elingboe in a performance of his Requiem. Chorale also appeared in a 15 minute solo performance as part of the evening's concert. During their week in New York, NCU Chorale had the privilege of singing at Brooklyn Tabernacle (Brooklyn, NY) and had the opportunity of working and performing at the Bowery Mission, (New York, NY) where they were wonderful ambassadors for North Central.

NCU staff aid in local tornado aftermath Staff members from North Central University fanned across the tornado-devastated portions of North Minneapolis on Friday, May 27, 2011. Working with faith-based Urban Homeworks the group of NCU staffers helped dispose of debris. A tornado hit Minneapolis on Sunday, May 22nd, damaging at least 100 homes, toppling hundreds of trees and injuring at least 29 people. Since the tornado struck, public works crews and workers with the Minneapolis Park Board have removed significant amounts of wreckage from the city. So far, dump trucks have transported 4,424 loads of tree debris and the removal will continue through June 10.

NCU Alumnus wins the Mini Blizzard Treatment NCU alumnus Nick Kallies, ('10) was presented with the keys to a new car for an online video he created as part of a Dairy Queen contest on June 21, 2011. Kallies won a Mini Cooper Countryman for his video "Marshmallow now? Or Mini Blizzard Later." The video depicted children having the chance of eating a marshmallow now or deferring it for a Mini Blizzard later. Kallies, a staff member at River Valley Church (RVC) in Apple Valley, MN came up with the concept with his supervisor and NCU alumnus, Tom Poch ('02). In April, DQ customers were asked to create videos combining their love for the Dairy Queen brand with a “mini TREATment” to submit online at DQ.com/mini. Dairy Queen officials judged all video submissions on content and creativity and posted the top 24 to the DQ Facebook page to allow fans to vote for their favorites. The six video entries that received the most fan votes during a two-week period in May were selected to win the ultimate Mini Blizzard TREATment, a new Mini Cooper Countryman from Dairy Queen. 5

Recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Educator Award* from the Alliance for Assemblies of God Higher Education, Dr. Lloyd has spent her adult life in the education field. First in the elementary schools of Saint Paul, then as an educator for North Central’s School of Education where she has served both as a professor and the department’s chair (2002-2009). Today, her research interests include studies of African-American male students in grades three through five, when many lose interest in school. *Every two years the AG General Council selects an award winner from nineteen Christian higher education institutions that are part of the Assemblies of God. This marks the fourth consecutive council that a North Central University faculty member has been selected for this award.

Inspiring his students to find their voice and develop their craft, NCU alumnus Gary Dop (1999) lives to encourage young writers. His infectious humor and genuine commitment to helping students achieve their full potential are a powerful combination. In addition to teaching creative writing and literature courses, Gary enjoys performing stand-up comedy when his schedule allows. He also founded and directs the Taproot Reading Series, which brings accomplished writers into Minneapolis’ Elliot Park Neighborhood. Gary’s award-winning poetry was recently recognized by the Poetry Foundation’s syndicated newspaper column, American Life in Poetry, and by the Pushcart Prize Anthology.

When he graduated from North Central University as a Pastoral Studies Major (2002), Justin Lathrop didn’t realize how much his education would help prepare him for relationship building in the outside world. Since that time, he has served in many different capacities that have enabled him to connect with pastors and ministries all over the world. Currently Justin is the Executive Pastor of Strategic Development at The Oaks Fellowship in Texas, and the CEO of HelpStaff.me, a firm helping churches match their specific staffing needs with qualified candidates.

PEAKING IN LINDQUIST SANCTUARY AT THE START OF chapel, NCU President, Dr. Gordon Anderson announced the formation of four new Colleges within the University. The College of Ministry, the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, and the College of Missions have been formed as a strategic advancement to better support current program offerings and continued program growth. As is fitting for any decision of this magnitude, the Strategic Planning Team and President’s Cabinet have been investigating the possibility of changing North Central University’s nomenclature for several years. Discussions on the renaming of the various entities as colleges and schools, instead of departments, have occurred in various committees, focus groups and Board of Regents meetings. “As we continued to discuss and develop plans for this monumental step forward, it became clear that the time for this historic announcement had come,” Dr. Anderson. “I believe the formation of these Colleges will bring to light the strength and quality that already exists in our programming, as well as pave the way for continued excellence and development.” Current academic departments have been placed under the leadership of these Colleges – either as Schools or as Departments. (A further introduction to each College, including the Schools, Departments, and programs now a part of each is presented in the following pages.) In practical terms, the naming of Colleges and Schools reflects how the various areas function, rather than being made on the basis of size. Representatives of the President’s Cabinet have expressed the view that the historic announcement also reflects the natural growth already happening, indicating that in many ways this formation of the four Colleges is also a recognition of functions that are already taking place within these areas of programming to set them apart. Among other benefits, the new structure of the Colleges is anticipated to facilitate a greater sense of identity for North Central students and alumni within their area of study. The Colleges provide a framework with great potential to bolster networks of alumni and future graduates around their career field and programs of study, further strengthening the sense of community and support by providing a clearer point of connection.

with contemporary titles both reflects and validates the exceptional, high-quality education that our students are receiving at North Central University,” said Dr. Thomas Burkman, Vice President of Academic Affairs. “These nomenclature changes will further add to the level of acceptance and recognition of our programs and degrees. There is no question that our students will greatly benefit by moving our university in this direction. I am very excited for them and the institution.”

ORTH CENTRAL UNIVERSITY HAS always prepared leaders for both vocational ministry and service in the marketplace, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling God’s call no matter the vocation to which that calling leads. As a result, hundreds of graduates have since been sent out as leaders who are ready to make their mark on the world in a broad range of vocations. The establishment of the College of Arts and Sciences creates a framework that will ensure excellence and growth in these exciting areas. The College of Arts & Sciences will be home to

several schools and departments. In addition to the formation of the four Colleges, the School of Business, School of Liberal Arts, School of Social & Behavioral Sciences and School of Education have been established, and will have their home in the College of Arts & Sciences. Several organizations and honor societies will come under the umbrella of Arts & Sciences and its schools as well, including Psi Chi (Psychology), Sigma Tau Delta (English), and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE; Business Administration).

INE ARTS PROGRAMMING AT North Central offers hands-on training and instruction to students in an environment that enjoys a national reputation as a top level program. Combining the academic strength of the University, state-of-theart facilities, and an award-winning faculty, the establishment of the College of Fine Arts solidifies the school’s commitment to developing the very best musicians, songwriters and worship leaders in the world. The College of Fine Arts will house the many music performance groups at North Central, including One Accord, Chorale, Worship Live

and several others. The College will also facilitate theatrical productions, which typically take place once each semester, and most recently included a fall presentation of ‘Into the Woods’ and a spring production of ‘Our Town’, both of which played to capacity audiences during their run. The College of Fine Arts will also continue the work begun in recent years to establish a Fine Arts Endowment, with a goal of raising $1 million to support program development and growth. After the formation of four Colleges and an Institute, a process to select deans began. North Central University is excited to announce the Deans of each College & Institute.

Larry Bach - College of Fine Arts Larry Bach, in his thirtieth year at North Central University, currently serves as the Artistic Director for the University. Under his vision and leadership, the Fine Arts department has grown from 30 to 200 students. Bach conducts the Chorale, the University’s premiere choir, and teaches conducting classes. The Chorale has completed 15 overseas tours; performed multiple times for the American Choral Association and has performed at Carnegie Hall. He is also a former recipient of the Assemblies of God Delta Alpha Distinguished Educator Award.

A faculty member since 1989, Dan Nelson is a multiple-year recipient of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, advises Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, and chairs the department of Social & Behavioral Sciences at North Central. Dan has also held several adjunct professor positions at other Twin Cities schools such as Bethel University and Northwestern College. Dan serves on the peer review corps for the Higher Learning Commission, and is a consultant with the American Psychological Association’s Department Consulting Service.

Dr. Paino is a believer in the value of intentional leadership and relational ministry. After serving as a youth pastor for the first 10 years of his ministry in Indiana and Ohio, Dr. Paino became a church planter and pastor. He has been an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God since 1986 and came to North Central University in 1996 to be the youth ministry specialist. Most recently, he has served as the Executive Chair of the Departments of Church Leadership, chair of the Student Ministries Department, Co-Founder of the Center for Youth and Leadership, and Full Professor.

Audiences are continually challenged and encouraged through the ministry, preaching, and leadership of Dr. Anderson. His speaking style delivers poignant truth with content-based teaching and practical application. His messages are a reflection of his dedication to the truth. In 2010, North Central University celebrated the 15th anniversary of Dr. Gordon Anderson’s presidency. Anderson’s professional experience includes fourteen years of pastoral leadership and more than 28 years as a college professor and administrator.

Dr. Menzies served as the department chair of Bible and Theology (2005-2011) and has been part of the North Central University faculty since 1990. He is a member of the North American Patristic Society, the Society for Pentecostal Studies, and Society of Biblical Literature. In 2009, Dr. Menzies was the recipient of the Assemblies of God Delta Alpha Distinguished Educator Award. Dr. Menzies also organized and led North Central University’s “Pentecostal Issues Seminar” (1998-2006) and “The Laboratory,” a forum for discussion of church issues by pastors and professors (2008-Present). Most recently, he has served as the department chair of Bible and Theology, Faculty Marshal, and Full Professor.

OR MORE THAN 80 years, North Central University has believed that a biblical and spiritual foundation is essential to success in any career arena. That’s why our curriculum for all majors includes requirements for Bible and Theology classes. As programming has expanded from the days of North Central Bible Institute, the Department of Bible and Theology continued to serve students across the whole of the University to provide the core Bible classes required as part of each major program. Now, in that same tradition, North Central is pleased to announce the establishment of the Institute for Biblical & Theological Studies, which will not only provide the Biblical Studies and Biblical Languages majors, but will continue to serve students across the University by providing the Bible core requirements for students in the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Ministry and the College of Missions.

INCE THE FOUNDATION OF NORTH Central Bible Institute in 1930, preparing and training ministers for service has been the core of who we are. As the school’s programs and offerings have expanded over the years and a worldclass university was formed, our commitment to ministry remains just as strong. The establishment of the College of Ministry provides for continued growth and development of these programs as we embrace our responsibility to raise up and send out the next generation of leaders answering God’s call

to vocational ministry. The College of Ministry will provide the central location for ministry internship programs and placements, matching students with churches and ministries for mutual benefit. The College will also oversee the Center for Youth and Leadership, and will be responsible for the continued development of the Moen Chair for Pentecostal Preaching and other coeducational programs focused on training the next generation of pastors and church leaders.

ROM ITS INCEPTION, NORTH CENTRAL has been a place of preparation and personal growth for students and leaders who have a vision that reaches far beyond the walls of the NCU campus. The world has been changed in so many ways by the dedicated students who have been trained and sent out from North Central. By establishing the College of Missions, we can remain focused on producing graduates with a strong biblical foundation, better global awareness, and a passion for missions that will enable them to continue to change the world. In addition to the missions-oriented academic

programs, The College of Missions will continue to develop the Center for Biblical Justice, as well as the Antioch Center - a partnership with Assemblies of God World Missions focused on reaching the Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist populations around the world with the gospel. The College of Missions will also continue the work done by the Intercultural Studies and Languages Department to raise scholarship money for students within the College’s programs. The College of Missions will also serve as the hub for all study abroad programs and will continue to be involved in coordinating various missions trips for students and faculty members.

STABLISHED THROUGH THE GENEROUS GIFTS OF donors, The Moen Chair for Pentecostal Preaching, named after former NCU Chairman of the Board, Rev. Ernest J. Moen, is a program designed to invite prominent leaders from around the nation to teach, model and mentor homiletics and pastoral skills throughout a given semester. Since 2002, the Moen Chair for Pentecostal Preaching has been filled by 22 capable leaders. Until this spring, one name has been added each semester, as a speaker is selected to regularly participate with the student body through a series of chapel services, as well as provide guest lectures in the classroom for homiletics students. The result is a list of noteworthy names who have contributed to the training of the next generation of great communicators and preachers. Wood has authored seven books, and is an attorney and a member of the California State Bar. Alton Garrison is the Assistant General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, as well as the Executive Director of the Division of Church Ministries and Discipleship. Garrison served as Executive Director of U.S. Missions from 2005-2006, and was the Superintendent of the Arkansas District from 2001-2005, after more than 30 years as a pastor and evangelist. Dr. Jim Bradford serves as the General Secretary of the Assemblies of God and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and the Executive Presbytery. Bradford has also served on executive boards including Vanguard University, and draws from more than 20 years of pastoral experience as he comes to North Central as a Moen Chair speaker. Douglas E. Clay serves as the General Treasurer of the Assemblies of God, a post he has held since 2008, after serving as the Superintendent for the Ohio District and National Youth Director for the A/G. Regardless of where they attend, graduating in four years is the goal of most college students. An increasing number of those students, however, find that the required amount of credit hours, combined with factors such as maintaining part-time employment or participating in extra-curricular activities, makes the four-year plan increasingly difficult. The reality of this situation, together with North Central’s commitment to strategic, quality academic programming has led to an exciting change for students. Dr. Thomas Burkman, Vice President of Academic Affairs, commissioned the Academic Affairs Committee at the start of the 2009-10 school year to review all academic programs and discuss how North Central could optimize program requirements. Their goal was to retain the quality of each program while meeting both the University’s commitment to include significant core Bible classes for all majors and the Higher Learning Association’s core general education requirements. Following nearly two years of work on the part of faculty, the Academic Affairs office and the Registrar’s office, approval has been given by the Administration and the Board of Regents. North Central is excited to announce this change in its academic program requirements. Beginning with the Fall 2011 semester, nearly all fouryear degree programs will require 124 credit hours for graduation - a reduction from the previous average of 132. The change, which will be a reduction in total credit requirements for graduation in most majors, was announced during a special chapel service by Burkman and Jeremy Sanders (University Registrar), and was met with

has spent the longest portion of her career as an educator at North Central University. During her years at NCU, Dr. Lloyd has taught numerous courses in North Central 's School of Education and chaired the department between 2002 & 2009. Dr. Lloyd’s research interests include studies of African American male students in third through fifth grades (a time when many lose interest in school), the causes of the achievement gap, and the residual effects of high stakes testing. In addition to teaching, Dr. Lloyd has been afforded the opportunity to travel to England, Israel, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Kenya, East Africa, and China in a variety of capacities for the university. 25

North Central SIFE Team Honored at Nationals North Central University¹s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team followed their second straight Regional Championship thisspring by placing first runner up in League 1 at the SIFE National Exposition on May 11, 2011. The NCU SIFE team also appeared on WCCO (CBS) morning news program, ‘This Morning,’ on May 12, 2011. The team was recognized during the telecast that briefly featured students from several teams who participated in the National Expo, which was held in Minneapolis. The North Central team presented community projects accomplished during the academic year, including: Project S.O.S., Elliot Park Night to Unite, NCU Green, Operation Lunch and InterviewME. Project success is measured on

objectives such as the number of individuals influenced and financial impact. NCU SIFE focused on influencing both the campus and the neighborhood community that has been home to North Central University for over 80 years. Bill Tibbetts, associate professor of Business Administration at NCU, is the team’s faculty advisor. “SIFE provides our students with the opportunity to partner their class room education with Biblical principles of service to our community,” said Tibbetts. “Participation in SIFE also provides our students with a competitive advantage when applying for internships and jobs in the marketplace. NCU has one of the most well respected SIFE programs in Minnesota.”

In addition to providing transcript evaluation with the goal of transferring 100% of credits earned whenever possible, North Central is also pleased to offer financial assistance to make the transfer process as smooth as possible. Students transferring directly from Bethany University to North Central University for the fall 2011 semester will be eligible for a one-time grant of $1000 applied to their financial aid package over the course of the 2011-12 school year. This will be over and above any financial aid they are already receiving. In addition to the available grant, students transferring to North Central from Bethany University will also find the cost of attendance to be less and enjoy an estimated savings of more than $3,000 per year. North Central University had the distinct pleasure of hosting the Pure Worship Institute (PWI), June 19-24, 2011. Over 120 students attended this year’s event featuring seminars, workshops, jam sessions, and listening panels led by North Central Fine Arts Faculty members and many skilled industry professionals. Founded by Jeff Deyo, nationally recognized worship leader, recording artist, original member of SONICFLOOd, and Worship Arts Specialist at NCU, the Pure Worship Institute works to train the next generation of professional musicians and singers. PWI teaches students “how to worship with an instrument, what God requires of singers and musicians, how to use the latest technology, and methods to writing and arranging songs.” “PWI 2011 was truly off the charts! God’s hand of love and favor on our students, instructors, worship leaders, and speakers was incredible as always. The softening and turn of hearts to Jesus was the stuff of dreams, as we observed miracle after miracle happening in everyone’s lives,” Deyo said. Each night of PWI also featured a Worship Encounter led by guest artists including Desperation Band, Marco Barrientos, Jonathan Lee and Brian & Ramey Whalen. On June 13th, 2011, Bethany University (Scotts Valley, CA) announced that the school would cease teaching operations for the 2011-2012 school year. As a fellow affiliate of Assemblies of God higher education, North Central University will honor the 92-year legacy of Bethany University by offering support and assistance to the hundreds of students affected by the announcement. While we are saddened by the news of such a great institution closing its doors, North Central University is committed to aid and assist the current and prospective students of Bethany University in whatever way possible. Cross-Country Teams Continue Run of NCCAA Dominance Women’s Cross Country continued their historic streak of victories at the NCCAA DII National Championship Invitational by winning their sixth consecutive national banner on Saturday, November 13 at Elvin King Memorial Cross Country Course in Cedarville, Ohio. The Lady Rams dominated the field, placing all seven runners in the top 10. Senior Catherine Mead used a career best 19:17.56 5k time to earn both NCCAA DI & DII All-American awards, becoming the first NCU female cross country athlete to achieve such accolades. She also became the first female runner in NCU history to win two individual national titles. Sophomore Michelle Hubbell ran to a second place finish for the second straight year, and

freshman Kara Montanez finished fourth. The North Central men finished with the top three runners and placed all five scoring athletes in the top ten to win the 2010 NCCAA DII National Invitational Championship The 2010 championship gives the Rams back-to-back victories and four championships in the last five seasons. Junior Jeff Winkelman ran to the individual NCCAA DII National Title and earned AllAmerican awards for both an NCCAA DI and DII. Senior David Calhoun and freshman Josiah Miller completed a 1-2-3 finish for the Rams, as each earned a NCCAA DII All-American award for their effort.

Alex Farber claimed two individual event titles and the Field Event Athlete of the Meet award at the 2011 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships. Farber followed up his NCCAA Indoor All-American 3rd place performance in the long jump with a UMAC title in that event with a

winning distance of 6.71 m. and won the high jump event with a conference indoor meet record of 1.88m.

In the 5th place game against Kentucky Christian the Rams and the Knights were scoreless until the 85th minute when Freshman Alyssa Freitag received a corner kick from Aimee Cornelius and sent it into the net for the game winner and claiming 5th place in the National Tournament. “I’m very pleased with the progress this team has made over the year,” Head Coach Jake Smith said. “They showed mental strength and determination, and everyone gave their best effort.”

North Central finished 37th in the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championship Tournament held on Tuesday through Friday, May 10-13 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. In August of 2010 NCU gained active Division III membership and a few weeks later the Rams won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championship giving them the school’s first automatic berth into an NCAA National Championship event.

The NCAA Nationals experience should be a building point for a team with four of five players returning from their conference championship season. Four Rams basketball athletes have been named to the Association of Division III Independents All-Independents teams. Sophomore guard Nathan Roeder was named as a member of the Association of Division III Independents

(AD3I) All-Independents 1st team, rounding out a season which saw him lead the team in both scoring and assists. Senior forward Levi Kooistra earned a 2nd team AD3I All-Independents selection, and Freshman guard Andrew Berndt was selected as an Honorable Mention. Sophomore guard Elisabeth Trickey was selected as a member of the Women’s AD3I All-Independents Honorable Mention squad.

NCU Women’s Soccer earned their third straight NCCAA DII Women’s Soccer National Championship appearance in 2010, closing out the fall by repeating as Regional Champions and traveling to Kissimmee, FL for the National Tournament. The Rams entered the Tournament seeded 7th but after an opening round loss to #2 seed Lancaster Bible College (Lancaster, Penn.) the Lady Rams defeated Atlanta Christian College (Atlanta, Ga.) 2-1 to advance to the 5th place game.

Kentucky Christian University to advance through the consolation bracket and earn a fifth place finish at the 2011 NCCAA DII Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament held March 10-12 in Circleville, Ohio. After their loss to KCU, NCU defeated Clearwater Christian College on Friday and Grace University. It was the Lady Rams best performance at the NCCAA DII National Tournament since 1995 when they lost to Kentucky Christian University in the national title game.
