Fall Transitions

On a recent morning, I snapped sticks. It was a pile of branch cuttings from our fruit trees that had been drying, some for one year, some for two. I was so peaceful, snap…snap…snap. This will be our kindling to start our fall and winter fires in our wood stove. As I did what some persons regard a menial task, I reflected on my contentment. I was participating in a larger rhythm, the great shift toward colder months ahead, and I was preparing. Like the ants in that proverbial tale of ant and lazy grasshopper, I was laying up goods now when the days are still warm, but getting shorter. We’ve also been laying up other goods—our garden is plentiful right now, and canning has been a rather constant event at our house lately. True, we don’t have to depend on these canned goods to survive the winter like our ancestors so recently did, but somehow knowing we are harvesting, and preparing the harvest, gives me a sense of place, connected to my human heritage and the natural world, right here, now, in Humboldt County. It was considerably darker this morning when I arose at my normal time, and last night, I was surprised that when I went outside to gather vegetables, it was already dusk. Geese have been flying over. Summer vegetation is withering. Fall transitions are here. -Harry Wells 1

Fall Favorites The Fir Cone Stitch

The Fir Cone Stitch reminds us of the life that thrives on the forest floor among the fallen leaves, conifer cones, and debris from the ancient redwood trees. This lacy stitch will make any garment your favorite for this fall season.

Wynter & Blackthorn

These dyed and undyed sister yarns by Classic Elite are both bulky weight blends of merino wool and baby alpaca fiber. Spun with a loose ply, these yarns are unbelievably soft, and are surprisingly lightweight for a ‘heavyweight’ yarn. But be warned- when you wear these plush yarns, everyone wants to cuddle up! Wynter: $15.00/120yards/100grams Blackthorn: $14.00/120yards/100grams

Natural Colors Worsted

When choosing our favorite yarns for the fall season, Swan’s Island Natural Colors was a no-brainer. Swan’s Island dyes their skeins of yarn with only natural dyes from insects, minerals, and plants. The rich earthy tones achieved in their yarns are absolutely perfect for this fall’s wardrobe. Natural Colors Worsted: $32.00/250yards/100grams

Mohawk Wool Mohawk Wool has been popular- but

rightfully so. This undyed blend Merino and Romney Wool was sourced and spun here in the U.S.A. This yarn is also 10% Nylon, which is just enough to give it the durability it needs for a lot of wash and wear... Perfect for socks or gloves! Mohawk Wool: $23.00/375 yards/100grams

Tara Tweed

The color palette alone makes Tara Tweed an instant Fall Favorite, but the lovely speckled texture from the tweed helps too. Tahki Yarns was able to mix the sophisticated look of tweed with the softness of luxury yarns- and their result was Tara Tweed. This yarn is an aran weight blend of wool and nylon, and it will no doubt be one of your Fall Favorites, too. Tara Tweed: $7.50/122 yards/50grams

Fall Transitions in Humboldt County

We find ourselves transitioning into the fall season. While the average person might mournfully pack away their shorts and swimming wear, we fiber enthusiasts are signing a different tune. It’s finally time to dust off our knitwear and thick winter projects that were too heavy to knit during the hot summer months. We have many reasons as to why we’re excited for the seasonal fall changes: Fall is harvest season, so the local farmers markets are all overflowing with top-notch fruits and vegetables. Blackberry bushes thrive and produce huge bounties of sweet berries that you can enjoy wherever you go. Bright and sunny days with cool temperatures and evening fog means we can enjoy our favorite day trips but still have a cozy evening at home with our knitting and loved ones.

Christmas at Sea Organized by the Seamen’s Church Institute, the Christmas at Sea knitting volunteer program has been providing mariners working on Christmas Day with hand knit goods since 1898. Mariners provide us with the basic goods we’re so accustomed to having, and their services and hard work are severely overlooked by society. Since the 1830’s, the SCI has been a strong advocate for regulations and laws to protect the hardworking seafarers in their tough living and working conditions. Today they are able to provide legal counseling, assistance, and referrals to welfare agencies around the world. Thousands of knitters across the country still donate to make a difference in the quality of life for mariners. There are several free patterns provided for hats, scarves, vests, and socks- but you are also welcome to use a pattern of your own choosing. There are however some regulations to keep in mind: yarns should be washable wool blends, yarns should not be heavier than worsted weight (we recommend Liberty Wool), and pompoms and tassels are safety hazards aboard the ships. The colors you choose to knit with is entirely up to you, but it is noted that bright or neutral colors are much more popular than pastels among the seafarers. We are collecting knitted garments to donate, but if you wish to do so on your own the mailing address is:
