More Than Words Often overlooked as a top priority, selecting your ideal celebrant is an integral part of creating your perfect wedding ceremony By Leisa Anderson
W
hile your flowers, cake and dress may not last, a professional and beautifully crafted ceremony will stay in your mind for years to come, and be a special experience for each of your guests. As the legally binding element of your wedding, your ceremony should be the highlight of your day — and set the tone for the celebrations to come. You only get one shot at this, so make sure everything you want to say is communicated through your celebrant — and that your celebrant is working closely with you in the weeks and months leading up to your nuptials.
LOOKING FOR MR OR MS RIGHT
Have you just star ted your search for celebrants? Don’t leave it until the last minute! It’s best to book in your celebrant as soon as you’ve set your date. In demand celebrants, like popular venues, often book out months and years in advance, so make it a priority to lock in your celebrant as soon as possible. Star t looking for celebrants in your region through reputable sources – wedding magazines (naturally!), local blogs and even industry bodies like The Australia Federation of Civil Celebrants. After doing your research, it’s then time to
make a shor tlist and speak to each celebrant to determine if they are available on your wedding day, and also, if they’re the right fit for your wedding. “Choose someone who makes it obvious that they love what they do, really listens to you and then reflects your love story on the day,” suggests Nor thern Rivers based Authorised Marriage Celebrant Lindy Cooke. “Initially, check out their qualifications, website, Facebook and Instagram pages and, impor tantly, their reviews. And, if this all checks out, check their availability and then their price.” If you have specific requests already in mind, discuss these with your celebrant first-up to North Coast WEDDINGS

see if they have the flexibility and experience to work out these details. "I often find having a one-on-one with the couple really helps the clients get a feel for who you are, and also for the celebrant to talk the clients through the process of the day and what is required," explains Michelle Shannon, Civil Marriage Celebrant from Byron Bay. "I think, if at all possible, it is always best to see if they can meet in person or by Skype, or even have a chat on the phone."
couple and wedding par ty if there is a rehearsal the day before.”) Once you’ve decided upon your celebrant, signed a contract and paid your deposit, then you can get down to the fun stuff — creating your ceremony.
20 minutes, although some could go a little longer.”
GET IT WRITE
It’s impor tant to ask an array of questions to ensure that you are comfor table with the process of creating your ceremony, and your celebrant is someone who you can see yourself working with. Some of the most frequent questions posed by Michelle's clients are: Do you have insurance? (“Most proper ty weddings now require the celebrant to have their own insurance should something go wrong,” explains Michelle); Do you stand in the middle of the couple or to the side? (“Photos are much nicer without the celebrant’s head in every shot.”); and Do you include a rehearsal? (“This cer tainly makes for a much more relaxed
With ceremonies lasting between 10 and 30 minutes, one of the key considerations is what length it should be. Have your ceremony too brief, then you may feel you’ve missed out on the moment; have your ceremony too long, then you may worry about your guests losing interest. “The length of ceremony should, in my opinion, depend on the couple themselves,” says Lindy. “I look on each conversation or email with a couple as being a connection, so that when I design each ceremony, it reflects each individual and unique love story.” “Ceremonies can be just the legals,” continues Lindy, “ or, as is the case with most of those I deliver, contain a personal introduction, one or two readings, hear tfelt vows which the bride and groom often choose to keep secret from each other until the day, with perhaps the addition of a symbolic ritual. In my experience, most would take around
For those would-be wordsmiths, this is your chance to shine. You can pull inspiration from anywhere – whether it’s a conversation you’ve had with your par tner, advice from a family member, a movie quote, song lyrics, a poem – just about anything can be incorporated into your ceremony. Usually, the ceremony will be structured with the welcome, followed by the giving away, then the introduction and readings, before the more formal par t of the ceremony – which is the monitum from the Marriage Act 1961 and declaration of intent to marry. Following this are the vows, the ring ceremony and then the pronouncement and much-anticipated first kiss as a married couple. After this comes the signing of the marriage register, the official cer tificate of marriage and the couples’ cer tificate of marriage, then the congratulations from family and friends, and finally the recessional. Your ceremony may be as shor t or as lengthy as you like, with ample oppor tunities to add your own personality and colour. The introduction or address offers a chance for your celebrant to tell your love story, while the

seamless as possible and avoid the big no-no of guests either straining to hear the vows or not being able to hear them at all. If the quality of sound is good at your ceremony, its likely no-one will even give sound a second thought! Instead, guests should be solely focused on you and your par tner, enjoying the ceremony and the many poignant moments. Whether it’s a windy hilltop or a tiny indoor venue, a seasoned celebrant will ensure that your voice is heard. If you’re a bit nervous about speaking in front of a crowd, make sure you organise a wedding rehearsal. Give the microphone a test run, and ensure that you feel comfor table with the sound equipment and the volume of your voice. Always ask your celebrant about their PA system, as a good quality, reliable, cordless PA system will mean less potential problems on the day.
MUSIC TO YOUR EARS
Have you ever been to a wedding where a family member is left in charge of the music — and accidently queues the wrong track? Instead of putting pressure on your nearest and dearest

to act as your ceremony DJ, enquire about the possibility of your celebrant running your track list. Songs that you may consider include those for the prelude, the processional, the signing of the marriage register, the congratulations and the recessional. However, like all elements of your ceremony, you can customise this to suit your tastes.
DRESS CODE
You’ll spend quite a bit of money organising your photographer for the day, so make sure that your celebrant is given a heads-up on the dress code. Talk to your celebrant about your preferred colours and level of formality, so you can make sure those precious ceremony photos look picture-perfect.
PLAN B
So, rain is predicted for your outdoor wedding, your celebrant falls ill or there’s an issue with your bridal par ty. Whatever the glitch, talk through all possible Plan Bs with your celebrant prior to the event — and put your mind to rest. There’s never a problem that’s so big it
can’t be fixed, but without careful consideration you could find yourself dealing with unwanted stress on your wedding day.
PUTTING A PRICE ON PERFECTION
“If you asked me what the least impor tant factor is, I would say price,” says celebrant Lindy. “Everyone has a budget to work to but, if you solely shop on price, you may well get a ceremony that has been churned out endless times before, with no love and only the names changed.” As with all savvy decisions during the wedding planning process, remember that this day comes around only once, and while your budget must be a consideration, it’s also impor tant to get all the elements of your wedding right. The fees charged by celebrants across the Nor th Coast are only a fraction of your theming, catering or attire costs. So, considering the significance of the wedding ceremony, paying for a professional celebrant is well wor th the investment.

Belinda & Thomas
THE MEETING
Tom and I met at the University of New England in Armidale. We both lived in Austin College, Tom was in his second year of Primary Teaching and I was in my first year of Primary Teaching.
THE PROPOSAL
It was Tom’s 27th Birthday and so I wouldn’t suspect anything Tom’s mum had arranged a long weekend at a Bed & Breakfast in Bellingen. We drove up with some nibbles and drinks with the plan to find somewhere nice for a picnic. However, it wouldn’t stop raining so we ended up with the picnic at our Bed & Breakfast. Later that evening I was getting ready to go out for dinner and Tom popped the question, it was a lovely surprise!
THE CEREMONY
The ceremony was absolutely beautiful. We stood in front of the magnificent Tallowood Tree that is the spectacular feature in the rainforest. We had family read special poems and my brother Rob Waugh was the official celebrant which made the ceremony so special and personal. North Coast WEDDINGS

their own attire, as well as travel to the wedding location and their own accommodation. Bridesmaids and Junior Bridesmaids (below) walk in the procession down the aisle, before the bride. Importantly they mingle and dance with the groomsmen at the reception and attend to the bride’s needs.
5. GROOMSMEN
The groomsmen/groomswomen have very few responsibilities before the wedding. Mainly, they help the best man plan and host the bucks night. Groomsmen need to arrive early at the ceremony, willing to greet and seat guests. Like the Best Man, Maid of Honour and the Bridesmaids, they pay for their own outfit, and are responsible for getting to the wedding location and their own accommodation if travelling from elsewhere.
6. JUNIOR BRIDESMAIDS AND FLOWERS GIRLS
There are no hard and fast rules, although a Junior Bridesmaid is generally aged between nine and teenagehood. Flower girls are younger, around four to eight years old.
Event
The Junior Bridesmaid wears a dress paid for by her family that is in the same style as the other attendants. She is the first attendant to walk ahead of the bride down the aisle, carrying her own bouquet (or petals to scatter).
7. JUNIOR GROOMSMAN
A junior groomsman is also a tweenie (9-13 years old) and are simply part of the bridal party, escorting any junior bridesmaid in the recessional. The Junior Groomsman wears an outfit paid for by his family that is in the same style as the other attendants.
8. RING BEARER/PAGE BOY/PAGE GIRL
The ring bearer is traditionally a child who carries the wedding rings on a satin pillow down the aisle, ahead of the bride. The Maid of Honour and Best Man then take the appropriate rings off the pillow and give them to the bride and groom. Like the flower girl, the ring bearer’s parents pay for his/her outfit.
7. ADDITIONAL ROLES
We also suggest couples consider delegating the following activities: 1. Bar tab and drinks service – have a person on hand who can take care of rowdy or drunk guests and make an announcement when the tab service is close to ending. 2. Long speeches – Ask one of the bridal party or the MC with a good sense of humour to time the speeches and step in to graciously grab the microphone. 3. Dietary requirements and food service – particularly for cocktail weddings with canapé service – circulating around the room and asking guests if they have had enough to eat is invaluable. Dietary requirements are now the norm – let wait staff know who requires a special diet so they can make sure they are not overlooked as often in the flurry of postceremony socialising they don’t miss out. 4. Getting home – keeping an eye on grandma and making sure all the wedding guests can get home – perhaps even calling cabs – is a great relief for the bride and groom.

THE MEETING
Dan and I first met in Sydney at work – he was based in Melbourne, but working out of the Sydney office, and I was helping his team. It took us a year to strike up the courage to actually tell each other that we liked one another
THE PROPOSAL
Dan took me to Sydney for a romantic weekend, we were having a picnic and champagne overlooking Sydney Harbour and he whipped out a crossword puzzle with questions about all our dates and favourite moments over the years. Once I had successfully completed the puzzle he told me I’d get a prize if I closed my eyes. I was expecting a kiss, but when I opened my eyes he was on one knee with a beautiful sparkly engagement ring. I burst into tears and laughter at the same time, it was an amazingly fun day.

With stunning Jacaranda-lined streets casting purple flowers across your path, as well as a multitude of scenic waterways and beautiful examples of colonial architecture, Grafton offers couples a picturesque location to say their “I dos” Located in the lush Clarence Valley, approximately 7 hour’s drive from Sydney, this provincial township is the commercial hub of the region, offering exceptional dining, enter tainment and events. With a long, rich history and natural surrounds, Grafton weddings often combine elements of country and classic style — with rustic elegance and boho two popular choices of theme. From the flourishing purple Jacarandas — which have become the town’s trademark — to the beautiful Clarence River, Grafton lends itself to outdoor ceremonies that take full advantage of the striking scenery. Popular ceremony sites include Strontium Park, which offers an array of majestic fig trees that act as a natural canopy for your ceremony, with the tranquil waters of the Clarence River as your backdrop. See Park is another lovely location for a garden ceremony, with manicured lawns, graceful Jacarandas and water views across the lake.
Alumny Creek Reserve provides a village green atmosphere, and surrounds the historic site and must-see tourist attraction, The Alumny Creek School Museum. McLennan’s Lane offers panoramic views of the river, with large fig trees that will add drama and beauty to your ceremony. You may hold your ceremony and reception at the same site, with their beautifully restored B&B cottage available for receptions. If you’re looking for a venue a little out of town, The Big River Ski Lodge at Seelands is a popular choice; offering guest accommodation, ample outdoor space and uninterrupted river views. If you’ve envisaged a more traditional ceremony, the awe-inspiring Christ Church Cathedral, on the corner of Victoria and Duke Streets, makes a grand statement — with towering ceilings, intricate detailing and an impressive facade. Accommodation in Grafton is both affordable and plentiful, with an array of motels, B&Bs, heritage-listed hotels, retreats and centrally-

We talk to
Tara Ledger, Outpost Hair & Beauty’s new hair and makeup wedding specialist
What does a hair and make up specialist do? We have to get to know the bride, what they like and what she will love, how the style will fit in with the day, the gown, the bridesmaids and flowers all in the first consult. Whether you have a trial or meeting them for the first time on their big day. We have to work magic and work with what you have and make it last till the clock strikes 12! What does a bride do if they can’t decide on a style? Most brides have picture in their head of what they want to look like on the day. I think the best option to have is a few different photos for inspiration. A stylist can personalise the style suited to the bride, a trial is always a great option if you’re not sure, that way there are no regrets – and always remember to speak up if you want something changed. That is my biggest must at the end of a wedding to make sure the bride and party are perfectly happy. Why do you love doing weddings? When I was young I was flower girl a few times. I still remember sitting in the salon under a hooded dryer getting curls. I loved the smell, the salon, the experience, and from then on I wanted to be a hairdresser. My passion was always style, I love that when you start in the morning of the big day most
brides have bed hair an hour later they are ready for the most important day of their lives and I help create that dream. Any tips for the bride to ensure they have a lasting look on their wedding day? The last thing any stylist wants to do is talk a bride out of what she wants. Be realistic of what will last with your hair type and what won’t, an upstyle will look better for longer than down curls. Using the right products and knowing how to work with them is a must, you need to have the foundations and prep work to make any style magical and last as long as possible. What are the latest trends in wedding hair and makeup? Defiantly soft elegant loose styles are in, it’s all very relaxed styles with lace gowns and mixed flowers. Soft natural make up with pinks and soft browns. Each wedding is individual and needs to be what suits the dress and the theme and more important what the bride is comfortable with. 41 Hyde Street, Bellingen / 6655 0315 outpostbellingen.com.au North Coast WEDDINGS

Katie & Michael
THE MEETING
We grew up in the same town. Michael was a year below me at school and we always knew one another but it wasn’t until we were in our early 20’s that we really connected. Michael was living and working on the gold coast and I had to move to Sydney to start my nursing career. After 6 months Michael made the big decision to move his life to Sydney and join mine. This is definitely when I knew what we had was worth something.
THE PROPOSAL
Two years into our relationship Michael and I fell pregnant with our son Willow who is now 3. We knew we were always committed to each other and marriage was the next step for our family. Michael proposed on a whim before a work function. He is definitely not the romantic type and his proposal was very him. Although I knew he was very nervous. North Coast WEDDINGS

Our fashion shoot...
T
he fashion shoots are always an exciting part of putting the magazine together. Getting to meet and work with talented locals is a great experience. Many times we bring together people they have not worked together before but go on to form great working realationships in the future. Everyone is briefed on the theme and look the week before, but a lot is still left to ‘go with the flow’ on the day. With so many creative minds together some amazing things happen. Summergrove Estate was our host, a 73 acre property with magnificaent ocean and hinterland views situated in the hills of Carool in northern NSW not far from the Queensland border. Climbing the driveway of the property the gleaming Airstream came into view, reflecting the countryside in its mirror-like finish to reveal a fabulous bar and lounge area. The Ink Gin cocktails on the bar looked every bit as inviting. Coming to the top of the rise where a table was being set up looking over the awe inspiring view. A lot of flair and dedication goes into displaying tableware to make it look just perfect. I unpack the gowns, menswear and jewellery generously donated for use on the day and head for the beauty room where the model was already being preped by the hairdresser and makeup artist. The footwear from Octavia Shoes is set up and I want to try them all on they are just beautiful. Meanwhile the floral decorations were being set up in the chapel, hours of work for just 20 minutes of photos. Flowers and greenery are being chauffered around in a golf buggy. We ease into the first shots of the day that help everyone start to work as a team. Emily our model and Alyce our photographer are firing and the first of the photos look fabulous. Costume, shoe and jewellery changes follow. Callum our male model arrives with his two horses which we are using in the shoot. Julia and her team are making a gorgeous floral harness and

headwear for the horse, they make it look so easy and we have to try and stop the horses from feeding on the delicious flowers. So far the weather has been fine and cloudy but now threatening with squalls of wind. We are conscious of rain being forcast for later in the day, but we are trying not to think of that. After simply gorgeous photos in the chapel we break for a much needed lunch to restore everyones energy level, kindly supplied by the team at Summergrove Estate. The afternoon sees us shooting the gorgeously laid table and praying the breeze doesn’t keep blowing out the candles. The beautifull hand crafted stationery adds the finishing touch to the elegant look of the setting. The pavlova is the final item to be placed and we dribble lashings of berry syrup to flow deliciously down the sides, all of us are waiting for a taste at the end of the shoot. The horses are next and first time rider Emily does a fabulous job of staying in the saddle and looking like an experienced rider. Callum has them well trained and the myth of don’t work with animals doesn’t apply, we coax them with food and they preform perfectly. Luckily it is daylight saving in NSW and the shoot stretches into the early evening till at last we are finished and packing up starts just as it begins to lightly rain. Everyone is tired but on a high. The day has gone better than planned and the photos we look through on the back of the camera are just wonderful. The weather finally breaks as we all say good bye, some of us with a short journey home others with hours to travel. The day is finished for most of us, but Alyce still has to process the photos in the coming week and send me the proofs. Sometimes the hardest part of all is picking the final photos to make it into the magazine and choosing the cover photo. But that is all to come... On the following pages, read about the team that put it all together.

Jenna & Aaron
THE MEETING
I actually fell in love with Aaron’s other half, Agnes. Agnes is a mustard yellow Kombi van. As soon as I saw that Kombi, I had to know who owned her. Aaron and I met soon after, and the rest is – as they say – history.
THE PROPOSAL
Aaron asked me to marry him on Christmas Eve, on one knee, in my mother’s garden in New Zealand. My entire family was home for Christmas, so it was a very brave move! But, he knew how much I was missing home, and how much it would mean to me to share that moment with them.
THE CEREMONY
The ceremony was full of special moments! Arriving to the aisle in Agnes was the obvious choice. We chose to have the ceremony on an almost island that is created by two dams. Gum

THE MEETING
We first met at a mutual friends 18th birthday party
THE PROPOSAL
We went away for the weekend to celebrate our 4th anniversary to a small little country cannons called Ripples on the Creek just out of Kyogle. We were told there were platypus in the creek, so we walked down to the beautiful creek looking for the platypus. I turned around to say something to Shane and there he was down on one knee. The sun was setting through the trees, it was beautiful. We went back to the cabin where there were rose petals and candles leading to the outdoor spa. It was very beautiful and so romantic.
THE CEREMONY
I arrived in a helicopter which my family had arranged and wore cowboy boots with my dress which were a gift from Shane. The day was overcast and threatening to rain but a patch of sunshine shone on us through the clouds during the ceremony. We got married on top of my favourite hill.

THE MEETING
We met at a friend’s party- Caitlin was the quiet one and Nick didn’t know many people and we just spoke for hours. Talked for another year before we actually got together but it was never going to be any other way.
THE PROPOSAL
We went on a Holiday to Daydream Island to get away from the winter cold. On the second night of our holiday, Nick found us our own spot to watch the sun set over mainland Australia. The colours of the sky were splendid and the last of the sunlight shone off the water. Nick got on one knee and proposed with the bright orange sun just sneaking behind the mountains.
THE CEREMONY
Caitlin arrived to the reception in a 1956 F250 owned and driven by a close family friend. The ceremony was held at the end of Sealy Lookout overlooking Coffs Harbour on a perfectly clear day. We released butterflies at the end of our ceremony. North Coast WEDDINGS

Sarah & Matt
THE MEETING
We met while filming a TV commercial for Matt’s parents business. It was advertising their catamaran cruises in Yamba. While we were on the boat, the camera crew wanted a couple for showing off the ‘sunset cruise’ that Rockfish offered. Matt and I were chosen and had to pretend to be a couple even though we had never met.
THE PROPOSAL
We are both teachers and finished school on Friday 18th December 2015. As we were leaving on Sunday to go to NYC & Iceland on a trip, Matt had planned on proposing while having a picnic that afternoon. However I invited other teacher friends over that afternoon to celebrate so it didn’t go to plan! The next morning we went for our early morning walk to get coffee and once home we got ready to go out to breakfast with family. Matt proposed on our front deck that he was very proud of building that year.

Kendal & Shawn THE MEETING
We met through mutual friends in 2006 however, we had known of each other all through high school. This year we have been together ten years - this was why we decided to wait until 2016 to get married.
THE PROPOSAL
The proposal was at the end of our six week trip around the US and was on the eve of Shawn’s Australian 30th Birthday and New Year’s Eve 2014. We were in New York City on ‘Top of the Rock’ whilst watching the sunset. Straight after the proposal snow starting to fall – it was very romantic.
THE CEREMONY
Our wedding day was very family oriented from start to finish. We didn’t have a specific theme as such we just wanted to incorporate the textures of the barn we built and the rolling green hills. If I had to describe the day I would say raw romance. I had my two brothers drive our cars to the ceremony, my niece and nephews involved in the wedding party and the Grooms Father looking after and walking our Dogs down the aisle. We wanted our ceremony to be simple and personable on top of a hill. We were surrounded by close family and friends and our two fur babies – Frankie and George.

Amanda & Etienne
THE MEETING
Etienne was the poster boy for the accounting firm where Amanda’s senior accounting class went to for an open day. The next year she started at the same firm as an intern and a great friendship started. They thought they had kept their relationship discreetly under wraps but a year later when they announced they were an official item everyone commented, ‘haven’t you always been?’
THE PROPOSAL
Etienne had being trying to organise a surprise dinner for Amanda at the same place they had their first date. But she kept having to reschedule. So instead he organised a picnic and told her to meet him one street away from the park at a day spa. He said he was in need of a massage and had booked Amanda to get her nails done. Unknowingly ruining his plans once again, Amanda decided that she too would like a massage instead. Afterwards, they strolled to the park and Etienne started unloading all the goodies he had packed. Amanda was making jokes about how overboard he had gone, when he pulled out the last item which was the most beautiful diamond ring! Needless to say she was quite disappointed in herself for not taking up the offer to have her nails done! North Coast WEDDINGS
