Well spring has definitely sprung and the wedding season has well and truly commenced. I just love the spring blooms they just pop with colour after the gloom of winter. We have really enjoyed putting this issue together, it amazes me how many talented and creative people work in the wedding industry on the Nor th Coast and it is such a pleasure to meet them and to feature their fabulous work. On page 25 we kick off this issue with a look at wedding receptions and how to plan them, it may seem a daunting task but when you know what’s involved the planning process can be exciting and fun. We take you through the basics to get you star ted. There are also some fabulous vendors ready and waiting to help with your reception plans so check them out after the story. The range of open days and wedding fairs seems to be ever increasing, but wedding fairs are not just about a goodie bag and free products. Wedding fairs can be a great way to help you plan your wedding. In our Wedding Fairs story on page 65, we have put together the top 10 reasons you should attend a wedding fair. Not only are they a great oppor tunity for couples and businesses to connect, but with a little planning and decision making, you can save money as well! This issue we stayed local for our fashion shoot, rediscovering places I hadn’t visited for ages. I love being able to showcase the beautiful places we have here on the Nor th Coast and this was no exception. I also love introducing you to new teams of talented locals each issue that work so hard on the day. I hope you agree the photos are amazing, the location was just spectacular and what about the view from the headland! Get ready to drool over these pics star ting on page 50. Lots of couples love their fur babies and want them to be par t of their big day. We look at the practicalities and options of this new trend in our story on page 79. THE MEETING Ben and I first met through a mutual friend of ours. THE PROPOSAL Ben is known to be a bit of a joker and in true Ben style this is exactly how he did the perfect proposal. For months before Ben kept pretending to propose to me on many occasions. Then one weekend we went on a road trip to Byron Bay. We went on a beautiful scenic drive in through the Hinterland before making our way along the coast stopping at several beaches. We then stopped at Cabarita Beach, Ben was walking behind me, when I turned around Ben was down on one knee like he had done on many occasions when he was pretending to propose. THE PROPOSAL

We were travelling through Europe and were in Venice when Ian organised a Gondola ride. As we cruised across the Grand Canal the sun was setting and Luca (the gondola driver) was singing in Italian when Ian got down on his knee and asked me to marry him holding the most beautiful ring I had ever seen (a rose gold diamond band engagement ring) .

My Dad passed away when I was 7 years old so to have my step dad walk me down the aisle with my family watching was one of the highlights for me and of course looking up and seeing my husband to be waiting for me at the end. My step dad, Yogi built the arbor that we stood under and because my florist couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it, my two brothers decorated it for me so to stand under that while we got married was very special.

Everything You Need to Know to Plan Your Dream Reception By Emily Marquart

You’re excited to start planning your reception, but where do you begin? There’s so much to do—from booking the perfect venue, to organising the right food and music. Fortunately, this is a tried-and-tested process, and once you know everything involved in planning a reception, you can begin to have fun with it! CHOOSING YOUR VENUE

Once you and your partner have decided on the ideal wedding date, it’s time to start scouting venues. This should begin sooner rather than later, ideally 9-12 months in advance of your chosen date. Locking in the right venue is one of the toughest planning choices you’ll have to make as a bride-to-be—but it’s also one of the most exciting. For this step, it’s important to know your

budget and have a rough guest count in mind, as well as the type of reception you prefer, such as formal sit-down vs. cocktail party (more on this a little later). Answering these questions will help you create a short-list of venues to work with. If you’re deciding between an indoor and outdoor reception, there are pros and cons to both to keep in mind. For example, indoor reception venues often offer plenty of décor options, while outdoor receptions sometimes

allow you to ease up on decorating and let the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape create your desired atmosphere. Important note for outdoor receptions: even the most meticulous planners can’t control the weather, so it’s best to have a back-up plan in place. This could mean reserving a tent or opting for a venue that has an indoor alternative in case rain ruins the party. Fortunately, there are many venues that offer the beauty of an outdoor

things to consider. First, do you envision your wedding reception as an all-night dance party? Don’t have time to dedicate to create to a long playlist? Then a DJ is for you. The great thing about DJs is they have a wide selection of music at their fingertips and are skilled at making quick adjustments based on the crowd’s mood. They’ll also be able to easily troubleshoot any technical issues and adjust volume levels during the toasts. If you’re super choosy about the music you want, or just want to keep costs down, creating your own wedding playlist is the way to go. It’s best to create separate playlists for each part of the reception—you don’t want to spoil your first dance song during cocktail hour. Perhaps the most important tip of all—have a backup! Technology has a knack for failing us when we need it most, so don’t leave the fate of your reception music to chance. A minimum of two fully charged devices, along with their power cords, is recommended.

Pack Comfy Shoes Yes, your wedding shoes are incredibly beautiful, but let’s face it: they’re not exactly the most comfortable shoes to wear all day long, especially if you plan on spending quite a bit of the night on the dance floor! Pack some pretty but practical footwear for the reception, and your feet will thank you. Make a Timeline After you’ve figured out what happens when, write out a detailed timeline and give it to the people who need it, such as your photographer, caterer and the venue manager. This will keep everyone on the same page and help make sure everything runs smoothly. Consider hiring a wedding planner Planning a big event like a wedding reception can be stressful, and frankly, not everyone has the time! If this is you, you might consider hiring a wedding planner to cut down the stress and guide you through the process of planning your reception, as well as all other aspects of your special day. Wedding planners are especially useful if you’re

having a destination wedding and aren’t as familiar with the location as you’d like to be. But that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit if you’re getting married locally; wedding planners have insider knowledge of the industry and have often worked with most of the venues and suppliers in town. There are also “day of ” planners that will get involved in the planning during the final stages, usually a month before the day. They will coordinate the wedding day schedule and touch base with suppliers to ensure everything is in order. This is a great option for couples who are happy to do the majority of planning but want the comfort of knowing someone is there to make sure everything falls into place on the day. Don’t forget… Finally, try not to get too attached to your plan. It’s impossible for everything to go to plan—and you wouldn’t really want it to! It’s those unexpected moments (like when the flower girl crashes your first dance or your dad gets a little carried away and his speech lasts longer than it should) that will make your wedding reception one of a kind.

April Werz, wedding photographer shares tips in creating beautiful artisitc images

April Werz is a well established wedding photographer covering the east coast of Australia from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast. April produces some of the most beautiful artistic images with a real uniqueness to them. With hundreds of weddings to her name, April has seen and learnt more about weddings than just photography. New brides often tap into her wedding industry knowledge to help organise other aspects of their wedding. Two brides sat down to interview April and see what tips they could pick up... So what is it that brought you the Northern Rivers April? AW - I’ve always loved this area from summer holidays as a kid when we would pass through or stay nearby for a night or two. It was hard to find somewhere as stunning as the Hunter Valley so I was picky about where to move to. There is something quiet magical about the north coast. Do you think getting ready shots are a good idea? AW - Oh definitely...It can be quite an intimate moment for people. Its one time in the day when close family and friends are all together and emotions can run high. I’ve taken some really special shots with parents and their children. Do you think it’s worth getting an album? AW - Definitely. Digital photos have their place but they can’t match a gorgeous coffee table album to flick through. I know many brides regret not ordering one as part of their package as it is

so much nicer to see the album in the flesh as a final product rather then just digital files on a computer screen. Now I know I’m going to stressed on the day, any suggestions to help me relax and not look like a frightened rabbit? AW - Well it can be a stressful day and you really just have to have faith in your planning and your service providers, which is why its so important to thoroughly check everything and consider all your options ahead of time and make the right decisions, especially photography. How long do I need to book you for on the day? AW - It really depends on the day of course but you should factor in more time than many people do.Time of year, time of day, it all has a bearing but once you have worked out your exact times then book a photographer in at least 12-18 months in advance for the busy months.

I’m worried it might rain, how does that effect the pictures? AW - You should have a wet weather option for everything, simple as that. It doesn’t have to spoil the day if you are prepared for it and I’ve got some of my favourite shots on wet weather days... if it rains I just make the most of it. If the bride is up for it we have fun and get the best shots…. bring your gumboots

I was in cooking dinner on a Sunday afternoon and our son Hendrix came in with a little box, Shaun was right behind. I opened it and knew straight away lol, I cried and cried.

They were incredible, I more or less ask my florist Fran to just let her creative flare run wild. They were the most beautiful soft colours but still with that country feel. The arrangement on our arbor was so spectacular it was later used for guests as a photo prop. THE DRESS I tried something a little different in that I had a two piece top and skirt. The skirt was from Made With Love and the top was sourced elsewhere and altered. Something old was a great aunts ring, my dress being new, borrowed was a beautiful pearl bracelet from my amazing bridesmaid.

Carole: I know from having the pleasure of having jewels and fashions from Le Dain Designs featured in a number of your amazing shoots, that your team are unsurpassable, do you always utilise the same people? Lynette: You would appreciate how each photo shoot is highly individualistic, we have an amazing team that all bring their artistic skills together for the specific theme. Some team members are core to each session. Loyalty and friendship comes about as a natural outcome but in each session we are all motivated by the newness, which generates a creative expectation for the next shoot. Carole: How long have you two been working together and what drives your passion for the fashion industry? Lynette: Our association began five years ago…we met at a Caulfield Race wear event. When a Stylist and a Fashion Designer work in harmony, it’s a match made in heaven. Judith and I are in sync with almost every detail. We share the love of exquisite fabrics, embellishments and accessories. Our passion for the fashion industry stems from discovery. Each project is like a first combination of concepts, ideas and research that will yield new colours, styles and a look that will evolve into highly individualistic images. Judith: Oh! I remember our first meeting like it was yesterday, I agree with Lynette, our meeting was coincidental but it was a match made in heaven! We both have an overwhelming amount of creative

such as the Spring Racing Carnival and there are also those inspirational projects which evolve from a light bulb moment. For example I was captivated by a particular house within my neighbourhood. The Greek inspired architecture motivated a call on the owner who is a retired artist.There are wonderful portraits and murals throughout the property. Thankfully the owner shared our enthusiasm and creativity, so we will be shooting there next week! Judith and I have also been busy beavers working on a project launch in 2018.Top secret for the moment but Carole from Le Dain Designs will certainly receive a VIP invitation to the launch. Judith: It is certainly an exciting time for Lynette and I. We are preparing for our product launch in 2018! We also have a number of exciting photo shoots to keep us well occupied….Imagine scenes in Europe, the US and other fabulous places in the world…say no more! Carole: I have seen so many diverse bridal inspired shoots that have been created by you and your team. With this magazine being a bridal publication, I would like to touch on the fact that not all brides wear traditional gowns and not all brides wear white! What are your thoughts Judith?

Judith: If we look back in time, the white wedding gown was only popularised by Queen Victoria in the 1840’s. Before then, brides would choose a more colourful wedding gown and in other cultures brides to this day, do not wear gowns, As a couturier, it is important for me to totally understand the brides taste and style. As we have stated, not all wear traditional and some steer away from wearing white. Some adore the whole princess look, others adore the vintage touch and many just love the natural style with a touch of Boho! I recently styled and designed for a bride that had chosen to wear a beautiful top and skirt but wanted to use exquisite golden shoes as the fashion focal point...everyone is different, everyone is unique. Carole: Tell us a bit about the talented photographers used in the two shoots featured in this interview? Lynette: The photographers behind these images are Sam Tabone from ‘The A Listers’ and An La with whom both Judith and I have been associated with for a number of years. With Sam our favourite catch phrase is “THATS THE SHOT!” then we all scream with wild excitement. It is a typical scenario

when working with the A Listers. Sam regularly travels the world for inspiration and to extend and update his catalogue of images. He is well known within the Fashion and Event Industry and he is also a photographer for Getty Images. Sam is fun, but cool and calm amongst...us hyped up maniacs! An La is the more introspective character. I have introduced him into the world of ‘Kookie Kool Shots’ and even though its not his usual style...I think he enjoys it !!! I also adore working with An, his style is sublime and unique. An’s passion for photography stems from studying the great masters and their preoccupation with light. His photographic style is based on Fine Art, conceptual and minimalist photography. The final edit is culmination of all the wonderful collaborative efforts to produce the masterpiece. THE MEETING

We met in Wyoming. The snow was falling as he stepped off the plane and it was possibly the most romantic moment of my life, I knew he was the one right then.

THE PROPOSAL

We went to Hawaii, where I was living at the time and spent 10 days together. He arranged all my friends to meet for dinner at a little beach restaurant with Tiki torches. Before we ordered our meal, he stood up and proposed to me in front of all of my friends, under the moonlight and tiki torches as the ocean lapped in the distance, it was magical.

THE CEREMONY

Our ceremony was really laid back and people were laughing a lot through out which I loved! Tim who is Dannyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best friend was so good at just keeping it all cruisy and fun. The most special moment for me was when we exchanged vows we had wrote for each other. 64

THE PROPOSAL Dan organised a surprise getaway to the sunshine coast for my birthday, he had a pile of envelopes with times and dates on each one and I had to open them on that time and date to see what he had planned for us. He had planned things like surprise dinner, winery tour and winery lunch over 4 days. He knew I loved horseriding, and one of envelopes was a Saturday horse trail ride, but while he had only been on a horse once in his life he still jumped on the back of this giant horse called Toby. We had a 2 hour ride through the beaches and dunes. I was so happy I hardly noticed him wishing it was over, and then afterwards he was getting flustered when he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find a deserted beach After he found the right beach with no-one around he was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring that he had designed from scratch with a jeweller. HOW TO INCLUDE PETS IN YOUR WEDDING

You’ve invited your family and your closest friends to be part of your special day, but are you forgetting someone? Here’s a hint: this someone is four-legged, loves treats and adores you more than anything in the world. By Emily Marquart Your wedding day is a chance to surround yourself with those you love most, so it makes sense that some couples want to include their pets. If you’re thinking of inviting your fur-baby to the big event, here’s everything you need to know for it to run smoothly.

WHERE TO START

Whether your animal companion is of the canine, feline or farmyard variety, there are various ways you can include them in your special day. Your pet’s personality will help decide what role they have on the day—are they calm and

obedient, or excitable and mischief-loving? If you have a well-trained pooch, they can stand with the wedding par ty or next to you during the ceremony, or they can have a starring role as a ring bearer, flower girl, or even best man! But if your pet is uncomfor table in large crowds, they may prefer to sit out the ceremony and keep you company during your photo shoot instead. This will create some pretty adorable photo-ops and you’ll have lasting memories of your pet’s involvement in your big day. In addition to wedding shoots, you can also include your pet in engagement photos, savethe-date photos and invitations. While a dog seems like the most obvious

choice to join in the wedding festivities, don’t dismay if you have a different type of pet. Outdoor cats can roam the ceremony venue, while inside kitties can be brought outside for some quick snaps. If you’re a horse lover, you can consider riding into the ceremony on your horse. Chickens, bunnies and birds aren’t out of the question, either. No creature is too big or small. Just remember, there’s no guarantee your pet will behave exactly how you want them to on the big day, so you need to be prepared for any and all scenarios—but every pet lover knows they wouldn’t have it any other way.

THE MEETING Billy and I first met when we were both 18 at a mutual friends Birthday Party. Even though we grew up in the same town we had never crossed paths until that night. THE MEETING We first met at Southern Cross University in Coffs. We were both studying to be primary school teachers and we were introduced by one of my best friends. We star ted hanging out and very quickly became inseparable. THE PROPOSAL We had talked about getting married for a while and we actually put a ring on layby together. After paying it off, Nick secretly picked it up, but couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help himself and spilled the beans as soon as he got home that the ring was hidden in the house somewhere. He asked if I wanted to go to a nice restaurant for dinner on Friday, but I knew what that meant and I told him I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want a public proposal. THE MEETING Our modern day love fest began when James did work experience at my office back in 2011. We immediately hit it off and chatted frequently around the office. After his work experience was over, I often thought about him and wondered what he was doing. Eighteen months later, our paths crossed again at Fridays Nightclub in Brisbane. We spotted each other from across the bar but neither of us made a move…He took me out to dinner two nights later and we’ve barely spent a day apart since. THE PROPOSAL James took me for a weekend away at our favourite resort at Noosa. After a full day of pampering at the hotel spa, James hired a scooter and took me for a ride down to the water. When we arrived, there was a 1950’s speed boat waiting to take us on a private cruise of the Noosa canals. On the way home, the boat moored on a sand island and we cosied up on a picnic blanket with a bottle of champagne as we watched the sun go down. Just as the sun was about to set over the horizon, James pulled out an album of photos from our relationship, each captioned with a different reason why he loved me. On the final page it said ‘Kathleen, will you marry me?’ He then pulled out a ring box. It was a special, private moment and will go down as one of the happiest of our lives! 94

n Early 2017, the Award-Winning Bonville Golf Resor t began to re-align their wedding offer, casting a set of fresh eyes over a product that was already one of elegance and sophistication. Well, it seems as though the team at Bonville is not content unless their product is continually improving and perhaps this is what makes the property so endearing to so many brides and grooms. “After taking a good look at what we had achieved over the course of 2016, we began 2017 by asking ourselves what it was that made Bonville really stand out as a wedding destination. What was it that made it special and how is our team a par t of creating something really special for our clients.” Said Stephanie Kesby, Bonville Golf Resor t’s Sales Manager. Bonville has long been known for their unique golf course setting, stunning vistas out across the green grass and into The Great Dividing Range, as well as their beautiful rainforest ceremony setting, but it seems as though the focus has shifted elsewhere this time. “I engaged the team here at Bonville including our Functions

Manager, Restaurant Manager and Marketing Manager and the consensus was unanimous. Our point of difference is our people and the experience they create for our clients” said Stephanie. The next step was to build new story for Bonville Weddings that positioned the brand correctly. “We wanted to build a new story so after a lot of brainstorming, we developed a key line that would cement our position.” ‘Precious Memories, Uniquely Yours’ now accompanies Bonville’s wedding materials. “It surmises our product perfectly. Weddings are all about creating precious memories, and we feel that it’s our responsibility to help create these memories. Beginning with the customer service at enquiry, through to planning, styling and executing, every step is as impor tant as the next – it’s all a par t of the guest experience” “ ‘Uniquely Yours’ is all about the little things that we make a big point about getting right” She added.
