Banyan Batiks Spring 2022 Look Book

MESSAGE FROM THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR, KAREN GIBBS

Is spring actually going to show up this year!? As I’m writing this, another snowstorm is hitting Colorado and the Banyan Batiks Design Studio. I’m super excited for spring this year, anticipating all the beautiful colors planted as bulbs last fall—same with collections we’ve been working on! I am thrilled for you to see the beautiful color combinations we’ve achieved in batiks!

Check out the Banyan Batiks Block of the Month, designed by Bound to Be Quilting!! Pat and Mimi bring years of experience to this BOM with a traditional feel. It uses our beautiful array of Essentials in a medallion style quilt with a fantastic border treatment. The dynamic color combinations are sure to please. For December delivery, I thought I’d try something a little different. When constructing quilts, we’re always trying to find those interesting borders that are just perfect to tie everything together, but have you also thought about how many different ways you can color a background?! To make those rich, gorgeous batiks sing, the perfect background is a must. Quilt Inspired Backgrounds & Quilt Inspired Borders are the perfect collections to address those dilemmas. Have you ever started with the background? There’s a fun challenge! It’s also very easy to tie these into our wonderful array of Essentials! Check out a fun way to showcase these with the Madison’s Star Marathon Giveaway! By purchasing a “Sweet Sixteen” of these, you will automatically be entered to win a program taught by me! It’s a weekend retreat-style program, where a queen-sized project will be taught and completed in that weekend – lots of fun, fabric & inspiration! – all tied together with a batik lecture, giveaways, and a class that all levels of quilters will enjoy.

In January, we’ve got some amazing new Color Me Banyan collections! I love to get in a creative mindset and explore all the abilities my wonderful partners in Indonesia have!

First, Color Me Banyan Botanical – Look at how it’s layered! And it’s totally backward. Color is first applied for the color inside the leaves and dots, and then a special bleaching process to achieve the veining in the leaves. Cool, right? Then the tjap is applied to hold that bleached out background and the rich background colors are applied. Love how interesting this makes the design! With its home dec appeal, simple pillow projects are a fabulous way to show it off.

Second, Color Me Banyan Swirls – Same concept as the Botanical one, but this time I kept the color that was applied first as the main color of the design and used a hand done screen for a detailed bleach out, used it again for the over printing of the dynamic Swirls motif. It gives the feel of a panel, but is running yardage. Add in some Essentials to easily create kits.

Also delivering in January is the Crossroads collection. Named for that unique batik feature design, with the double tjap, a nod to lattice. Makes a great backdrop, just like lattice fencing, for any floral display! What about an applique class with this, maybe featuring some trapunto, beading and embellishments?

February is all about going to your wild side! All over home dec trends right now is the use of animal prints in bold ways. Play it safe with traditional colorations, but then witness unexpected colorations in both home dec and apparel; On the Wild Side is a nod to that. We’ve developed some amazing tjaps depicting some beautiful and exotic animals. All within a useable size for piecing, for fussy cutting, to feature in center blocks or even as stuffed animals that are so very popular projects right now!

And since animal prints in unexpected colors are all over apparel, let’s try them in rayons too! 10 amazing colorations in our latest Love to Wear Rayons that just make you smile! I’ve chosen some that can be paired together in a swing coat, others that stand alone beautifully in a tee or shell. And what about those infinity style scarves? We’ve grouped these gorgeous rayons into two options for you to bring in on 6 yd bolts each, with the idea in mind of running a “Love You to Infinity” class or two! A fun project offered to keep those new sewists coming in and add color to everyone’s wardrobe! One sample takes less than an hour to make, but you’ll need to order an extra bolt of that sku as samples always sell!

Also delivering in February is the debut collection from Guest Designers Pat Syta & Mimi Hollenbaugh of Bound to Be Quilting! It’s called Stargazer, with a nod in color to the Northern Lights. Love the depth of color applications, the feel of looking up at the night sky, the nostalgia of those glow in the dark stickers of moons and stars on the ceiling of the kids’ bedrooms. Both Pat & Mimi have extensive experience in the quilting industry, and it's been a lot of fun navigating through the batik design process with them! We’ve made sure to offer precuts in this collection as this palette is always a favorite in those! Check out the projects in this Look Book created by them, for their collection. Stunning!

Delivering in March, to round out the release, are two collections: Memory Lane and Garden Party. Memory Lane has those warm saturated dark earthy tones that we’re embracing right now as we turn away from the stark grays and whites. Different scales in designs make this collection an easy fit for projects, therefore easy to kit. Garden Party shares that theme as well! Color combinations just in time to embrace all those blossoming colors you are anticipating seeing in your garden this year! Love the contrasts provided by some of the designs in this collection, color combinations you see in nature, unexpected in batiks. Of course, a palette of reds and blues in celebration is always welcome! With Garden Party, we’ve also provided some precuts for you to be able to create an amazing merchandising opportunity.
