2016 Operation of the Year!

Congratulations to GPN’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2016!

Growing quality perennials that develop the relationship between people and sustainable outdoor environments has been our mission since the first order shipped from North Creek 28 years ago. It is both an honor and privilege to be recognized by our industry for working hard to chase this goal. The entire team at North Creek Nurseries would like to thank the members of the selection committee at Greenhouse Grower Magazine for the privilege of being awarded 2016 Operation of the Year with special distinction for Excellence in Sustainable Production. Our team is proud to share this achievement with the industry. Awards and recognition like this may not be the “why” of what we do, but it recharges all of us at North Creek to do more, be more, and give more to each other and to our customers. It invigorates morale and sharpens our focus on the future of sustainable crop management and supply while renewing the challenge of our vision + values, “To be, in our customers’ judgment, a leader in the development and practice of sustainable horticultural systems, producing world-class plant material.”

Take advantage of our excellent spring availability, pre-book your 2017 potting program today!

Erin Kelly, Production Manager Ryan McGinty, Oxford Farm Manager

Annually, Greenhouse Product News (GPN) recognizes 40 industry professionals under the age of 40 who are contributing to the future of our industry. This past May, two Creekers were fortunate enough to have been inducted into the 40 Under 40 Class of 2016! We’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks and congratulations to our Production Manager, Erin Kelly, and Oxford Farm Manager, Ryan McGinty, on their achievements. Erin’s production team keeps our plant factory fed. Together they produce and monitor over 525 crops on open availability in addition to our custom grow program. Ryan manages our 28acre farm in Oxford, Pennsylvania. From finishing to shipping, Ryan’s team works tirelessly to deliver the quality plant material you’ve come to expect from North Creek. Join us in celebrating the contributions and achievements of Erin and Ryan!

New Introductions Agastache 'Blue Boa' PP24050

Carex oshimensis EverColor® 'Eversheen' PPAF

In addition to appearing more saturated when compared to Blue Fortune, the longer and wider inflorescences make this selection a standout in the perennial border. The flower spikes bloom from June well into October, keeping a small army of pollinators fulfilled! 24-32”│ Z 5-10 │ 72

We added this new selection to round out our EverColor® collection and could not be any more satisfied by its performance and grace. It is not only evergreen, but also ever-beautiful. There is not a single season in which this grass does not look garden worthy. 12-18” │ Z 6-8 │ 72 + LP32

Andropogon gerardii 'Red October' PP26283

Caryopteris × clandonensis Blue Empire™ PPAF

Two words: fall color. Deep green foliage emerges in spring with notable red tips. This selection comes alive as chilly October temperatures trigger an alarming transition to vivid red towers. Attractive, scarlet red inflorescences bloom above the blades. 6’ │ Z 3-8 │ 50 + LP50

According to our friends at Plantipp, the motto of this stunning, new Caryopteris is big, blue & beautiful! We found that to be 100% true in our own trial gardens. Long flower wands have extralarge blooms that last weeks on end. Superior low growing habit; excellent landscape and cut flower appeal. 30-40” │ Z 5-8 │ LP32

Asclepias tuberosa 'Gay Butterflies'

Chelone obliqua 'Tiny Tortuga' PPAF

The vivid orange flat-top flowers with red overtones and yellow centers are the perfect landing pad for all sorts of pollinators. Not only is it nutritional and highly attractive to beneficial pollinators, it is also wonderfully aromatic during its entire blooming period. 24-28” │ Z 3-9 │ 72 + LP50

Good things do come in small packages! The floriferous, pint sized presence of 'Tiny Tortuga' is a quick turn for 1-gallon retail programs with undoubted garden worthiness. Summer flowering, the hot pink blooms are a favorite of butterflies. Very compact, slow to spread and disease resistant. 18-24” │ Z 4-9 │ 72

Asclepias tuberosa 'Hello Yellow'

Coreopsis tripteris 'Gold Standard'

Aptly named, this selection has a glowing yellow color that welcomes and commands the attention of butterflies, hummingbirds and garden visitors. A unique host plant owing to its finger-width foliage rather than the traditionally narrow foliage of other varieties. 15-24” │ Z 3-9 │ 72 + LP50

North Creek is thrilled to introduce this fabulous Mt. Cuba Center selection! 'Gold Standard' shows better garden performance than the straight species, and is approximately 1’ shorter and blooms for an additional six weeks. Flowers borne on shorter, secondary growth distribute the floral display throughout the entire habit.

Athyrium otophorum eared lady fern

Coreopsis palustris 'Summer Sunshine'

The new foliage presents in a limeypastel and adds drama to the overall appearance of this fern. The fronds mature to a medium green creating a unique two-toned appearance through out the season. A fresh new look for shade that we think you’ll enjoy just as much as we do! 15-24” │ Z 5-10 │ LP32

Awarded 5 stars from Mt. Cuba Center Coreopsis trial as one of the MOST disease resistant tickseeds. Vigorous mounds of foliage reach up to a sturdy 30” in height with a bright and sunny end of summer bloom that lasts a full 6 weeks. C. palustris is slower to spread and can tolerate wet roots for extended periods. 3-4’ │ Z 6-9 │ 72 + LP50

5-6’ │ Z 3-8 │ LP32

New Introductions Coreopsis 'Gilded Lace'

Monarda punctata spotted beebalm

Another knockout as seen in the Mt. Cuba trials, the entire plant is covered in blooms from end to end during late summer through fall. Unique lacy, fern-like foliage is mildew resistant. Prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun. A Peter Heus selection brought to market by Plants Nouveau. 4-5’ │ Z 5-9 │ 72 + LP50

We adore the genus Monarda for so many of its wonderful properties including fragrance, ease of growing, willingness to naturalize an area reliably and all of the wonderful things that it can do for beneficial insects and pollinators. Excellent for meadows and naturalistic plantings. 24-30” │ Z 3-9 │ LP50

Geranium 'Azure Rush' PP22684

Muhlenbergia UNDAUNTED®

'Azure Rush' is low, tidy and gently fills an area with its fragrant foliage. ‘Azure Rush’ is generously covered with light blue 2.5 inch blooms. Everything that you have come to love and anticipate from 'Rozanne' is true + improved by her lighter blue daughter. 14-16” │ Z 5-8 │ 50

An aura of reddish mauve flower spikes bloom late summer into fall and will stop you in your tracks - a performance that intensifies when backlit by the rising or setting autumn sun. Striking when planted en masse. Fine-textured, soft green foliage forms a tidy, well-behaved mound. 15-18”│ Z 5-10 │ 50

Hakonechloa macra 'Albovariegata'

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head'

An elegant and noble addition to any shade landscape, this Japanese tree grass softens any major focal point in the landscape such as mature trees, boulders or stone patios. A truly graceful coloring with its creamy white margin.

This fountain grass cultivar produces feather plumes from August to September, a entire month earlier than other P. alopecuroides cultivars. Traditional bottlebrush plumes hold beautifully for months and mature to a beautiful deep purple.

30” │ Z 5-8 │ LP32

48” │ Z 5-8 │ 50

Heuchera 'Stainless Steel' PP23349

Penstemon × mexicali RED ROCKS®

One of the parents of this hybrid is H. pubescens, an especially hardy, drought-resistant species native to rocky slopes in the Appalachians. ‘Stainless Steel’ has been a showstopper since we started trialing it here! Bred by Charles Oliver and introduced by Plants Nouveau. 8-12” │ Z 5(4)-8 │ 72

A Plant Select® introduction selected from crosses between Mexican and American wild penstemons. Upright spikes of bright, hot pink flowers rise above mounded foliage throughout summer. Colorful, adaptable and able to thrive in a wide range of soils and conditions. BEEautiful! 14-18” │ Z 4b-8 │ 50

Hydrangea arborescens 'Haas’ Halo' PP24783

Schizachyrium scoparium 'Standing Ovation' PP25202

Since incorporation into our trial gardens, this Rick Ray selection has been drawing attention from customers and pollinators alike! Deep, bluish-green, leathery foliage and 14” wide, pure white lace cap blooms make for a stunning combination in any setting. Simply put, it’s a show-stopper! 3-5’ │ Z 3-9 │ LP32

A North Creek introduction worthy of applause. It keeps a tight, upright habit throughout the entire season and has stood strong even in the rich soils of our trial gardens. A industry favorite, it’s sure not going to let you or your customers down!
