Five assistant professors were honored with the prestigious NSF CAREER Award in 2008. This brings to 17 the number of current COE faculty members who are CAREER awardees (nearly 20 percent of the total COE faculty). We also celebrate our new national Center of Excellence in Homeland Security, one of just five nationwide. The Center for Awareness and Localization of Explosive-Related Threats (ALERT) joins our NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center, the Center for Highrate Nanomanufacturing, our NSF Engineering Research Center, the Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems, and our Department of Defense-funded Center for Microwave Magnetic Materials and Integrated Circuits as our fourth major national research, education, and technology development center…
