neiu.edu

Letter from the President I proudly present to you the 2018 President’s Report, which encapsulates the latest developments, top achievements and other noteworthy bits of news from the 2017-2018 fiscal year. And there were so many of them. It comes as no surprise; this is one of the most energetic places I’ve ever worked. It is full of promise, momentum and potential. I see it everywhere I look. From an historic capital campaign that is on track to meet or exceed its fundraising goals, to the launching of new academic programs and services that match the needs of our students, to an extraordinary group of people for whom Northeastern is a place to learn or work. Let me give my heartfelt thanks to all of you for all that you do. Please let me also take a moment to acknowledge my presidential predecessors for the valuable inheritance they have left us. Northeastern is an institution that has served and endured for more than 150 years under strong, capable leadership, and I strive to live up to that legacy. For their interim leadership prior to my arrival, I especially want to acknowledge Dr. Richard Helldobler and Dr. Wamucii Njogu. We all know that the success of the University isn’t just determined by the person in the President’s Office; it is the result of an engaged community working alongside one another to propel ourselves toward our next great aspirations. It takes hard work, dedication, confidence and strong support, be it financial or moral. Can we continue to count on you for all this? I hope so. Northeastern needs you more than ever, and if you need proof of how your support is transforming lives, then I invite you to keep turning these pages. Many thanks to you for your commitment to Northeastern Illinois University. Very best wishes,

Gloria J. Gibson, Ph.D. President

MEET THE NEW

President of Northeastern Illinois University

Gloria J. Gibson Seventh President of Northeastern Illinois University Dr. Gloria J. Gibson began her

first day as the seventh president of Northeastern Illinois University on June 1, 2018, having just moved from Charm City to the Windy City. Formerly the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Morgan State University in Baltimore, she spent the first few months of her presidency learning about the institution and meeting some of the thousands of people who make this university known as the most ethnically diverse in the Midwest.

NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

We sat down with the president to get a better understanding of her views regarding the University, her role as president, her leadership style and her plan to build a pathway to the future. Q: What do you think makes Northeastern so special? Gibson: For me, the answer is very obvious. It’s the people. First of all, our students are an inspiring group of individuals. They possess the characteristics that I strive for in myself: hard-working, compassionate, curious, dedicated, caring and ambitious. Many of them, like me, are first-generation students, and some have had to overcome obstacles in order to pursue their academic goals. So, I feel a special bond and connection with them. Some of the students I’ve met here at the University have been so kind to say they admire and respect me in my role as president. But it’s really the other way around. I admire and respect them for what they do and what they’ve had to overcome. It’s what makes me walk into my office every morning with a smile on my face. It’s also what keeps that smile on my face when things get tough. I am also so proud to have met so many alums who are living examples of how Northeastern transforms lives. I’m grateful to them for proving to the world that their Northeastern credentials matter and for demonstrating to our current students that their hard work will be worth it. Then there’s the faculty and staff. The thing that struck me about them from the very beginning was not just their strong commitment to students but the fact that they’re multi-talented and most of them wear many hats at the University. This level of engagement by the faculty and staff says a lot about them and their dedication to our institution. I want to empower faculty and staff to do their best to serve students.

Q: What does the presidency mean to you? Gibson: I would love to say that being a University President was something I dreamed about since I was a little girl. The reality is that the presidency happened to me as a result of my hard work and also strong support from my peers, mentors, friends and family. It didn’t become a dream for me until they helped me gain the confidence that such an important role would be within my reach. When I was asked to be president, I experienced a variety of strong emotions. It was a mix of

NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

excitement and joy. But it was also a deep sense of gratitude. So, when I think about what being a University President means to me, I think mostly of the people who worked with me, coached me, supported me and had confidence in me. I will forever be appreciative to them. When the Board of Trustees first announced that it would honor me with the privilege of serving as your president, they were really honoring my parents, teachers, family, colleagues, mentors, friends and well wishers who helped to bring me to this point in my career. None of the successes in my career is solely of my own doing. It was always because someone helped me. This is what I need our students to know. That they can succeed if they let us help them. I am the beneficiary of this type of kindness, so I feel strongly compelled to do what I can to help others attain their goals as well.

Q: What is your leadership style? Gibson: My training in leadership spans decades. That training was formal and informal, acquired through years of observation and emulation. I’ve read books about management and enrolled in seminars, but the most valuable lessons I’ve learned about leadership came from simply watching accomplished administrators at work. By the same token, I’ve learned a lot from watching those who were not effective leaders because they taught me not to repeat their mistakes. My years of experience in academia have provided me with a much clearer understanding of the special brand of leadership I want to practice. It’s a form of leadership that is open, forthcoming, empathetic and collaborative, and it is also fair, responsible and decisive. These also happen to be the traits that I want to foster and to continue within our own University culture, and I hope our University Community will help me promote them.

Q: What are your goals for the next year? Gibson: I’ve always thought one of the best ways we can live up to our University’s Mission is by ensuring the success of our students. First, we must improve our student retention rates and guide them through the completion of their academic goals, which in most cases involves helping them meet the requirements for graduation. Second, we must help those new students who might be underprepared for college-level learning and instruction. Also, we must fully implement the student success strategies that currently exist as well as challenge ourselves to come up with new ones that are effective and appropriate for our students. Our focus on students will be an obvious goal. However, there are other areas I expect to be priorities. One should be an expansion and elevation of enrollment and recruitment strategies. We must continue to identify areas and markets with growth potential, and we will aggressively recruit the area’s top students. I also want to enhance academic instruction in ways that make sense for us. Finally, I want us to identify the ways that we can amplify our engagement with our surroundings. That could mean stronger community and corporate partnerships that are mutually beneficial, and initiatives that position us as a steward of place. There is so much potential at Northeastern, and I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working together.

Highlights Goodwin Distinguished Lecture Series speakers bring star power

Legendary journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein participated in a lively conversation about their Watergate reporting, the current political climate and the age of instant news in a Daniel L. Goodwin Distinguished Lecture Series event in February. In the early 1970s, Woodward and Bernstein broke the Watergate story for The Washington Post, leading to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. The story set the standard for modern investigative reporting, for which they and The Post were awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Woodward has written 18 books and serves as an associate editor for The Washington Post. He was the main reporter for the Post’s articles on the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that won the National Affairs Pulitzer Prize in 2002, and he won the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency in 2003.

4

Bernstein, the author of five best-selling books including biographies of Hillary Clinton and Pope John Paul II, also is an on-air contributor for CNN and a contributing editor of Vanity Fair magazine. In the late 1970s, Bernstein spent a year investigating the CIA’s secret relationship with the American press during the Cold War for a groundbreaking Rolling Stone article.

In October, the series brought nationally recognized financial expert Terry Savage for a discussion titled, “The Savage Truth on Money, Markets and the Economy.” Savage writes a weekly personal finance column syndicated in major newspapers by Tribune Content Agency, and her columns also appear on Huffington Post. Savage makes frequent appearances as a money expert on CNN and other national television and radio programs, commenting on the financial markets and current economic events, and she is featured on WGN Radio and WGN-TV in Chicago with a weekly personal finance segment.

Northeastern awards honorary doctorate to U.S. Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez United States Congressman Luis V. Gutiérrez encouraged students to honor the trailblazers who made their education possible and to in turn open doors for future generations during Northeastern Illinois University’s Commencement Ceremony on May 7, 2018. Northeastern awarded Gutiérrez an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his achievements. Among his many accomplishments, Gutiérrez played an instrumental role in advocating for executive action by President Barack Obama to provide deportation relief to certain long-term undocumented immigrants and their families. Gutiérrez’s advocacy helped lead to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that protects some immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation. Gutiérrez, a Northeastern alumnus who earned his Bachelor of Arts in English in 1976, is in his 12th term serving Illinois’ Fourth District and in November announced he will not seek a 13th term. His career is one Gutiérrez said he could never have imagined when the graduated from Northeastern. “If you’re sitting there with a clear path for yourself, congratulations. You’re a lot further along than I was at that point,” Gutiérrez said. “For those of you who don’t have a plan for what’s next, I say don’t worry. You will figure it out because you have a degree from Northeastern Illinois University, and that I can assure you from my experience is a great foundation to build upon.”

Alice McGee brings gift from Oprah Winfrey to Commencement Adapting a moment made famous by her former boss and mentor, Northeastern Illinois University alumna Alice McGee announced she had a special gift for the graduates during the University’s Commencement Ceremony on Dec. 17. “You get a book! You get a book! All the graduates get a book!” McGee told the graduates, borrowing from the unforgettable words of Oprah Winfrey. “I hope it touches your lives.” With a little help from her friend, McGee concluded her address to the graduates by informing them they all would receive a copy of Winfrey’s new book, “The Wisdom of Sundays: Life-Changing Insights from Super Soul Conversations.” “It was my honor to work with Oprah all those years, but I would not have had the career I have had were it not for Northeastern,” she said.

University Highlights: Distinctions One of the safest campuses Northeastern has been ranked the country’s third-safest campus in a report released in August 2017 by College Stats, an organization that uses statistics to help students make informed decisions about where to attend college. Using data from the FBI, the U.S. Department of Education and a student survey, College Stats found Northeastern has the nation’s third-lowest crime rate. Clemson University in South Carolina topped the ranking. Northeastern’s University Police Department operates 24 hours a day and is one of only three college or university police departments to be accredited by the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program.

Sesquicentennial anniversary prompts Universitywide celebrations, resolutions, history book

Founded in 1867, Northeastern has endured for 15 decades, serving students and preparing them for leadership and service in a dynamic, multicultural world. And that’s cause for celebration. Much of the 2017-2018 academic year was spent acknowledging our institution’s rich history with events and contests to engage the University Community.

Elected officials near and far took part recognizing our 150 years. Both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives issued resolutions congratulating the University on its milestone anniversary in September. The City of Chicago also passed a congratulatory resolution in November. To commemorate our first 150 years, Alumni Association Board member Richard C. Lindberg (B.A.’74; M.A.’87) published a new book “Northeastern Illinois University: The First 150 Years.” He signed copies of his book during the NEIU Weekend celebration in September. For more information about the book – as well as Northeastern’s 150-year history – please go to neiu.edu/150.

Super Bowl ads aired in spring In February, Northeastern launched its first major TV ad campaign in eight years on Super Bowl Sunday. The regional TV advertisements aired before and after the big game, and were produced to build awareness of the University’s brand in the marketplace. The ads, filmed in both English and Spanish and aired on NBC5 and Telemundo Chicago, were a part of a larger marketing campaign called “150 Strong.” Do you want to learn more? or Deeloo, money isn’t about being rich—it’s about freedom and survival.

Now on the verge of becoming the first member of his family to earn a college degree, Deeloo is proud of what his education can do for his family and his community. “I have learned that helping people save money or make money is the best thing I can do for them,” said Deeloo, who moved to the United States with his mother and two sisters in 2009 before his father came to join them a year later. “At church, people will ask me for advice on securing a mortgage or building credit. It gives me a great feeling. It makes me feel really proud of myself that I’m able to help in the slightest.”

“Outside of this school we didn’t have much in common, but now he has grown to become a dear friend of mine,” Deeloo said, noting that his own native language is Assyrian Arabic while Brian speaks English and Spanish. “Northeastern introduced me to people who have helped me. Brian has been pushing me since the day I met him, whether it was scheduling or competing with me on grades.” That mix of students was a major part of what attracted Deeloo to the University. “What I really love about Northeastern is the diversity, this common struggle that most students have gone through,” Deeloo said. “You can easily relate to other students. The ones you can’t relate to, you can learn from.”

“What I really love about Northeastern is the diversity. ... You can easily relate to other students. The ones you can’t relate to, you can learn from.” Steve Deeloo, Finance major While Deeloo is on track to earn his Bachelor of Science in Finance later this year, he already is moving up in the business world. Recently promoted into a private client banker position with JP Morgan Chase Bank, Deeloo introduces clients to bank products and benefits, and refers clients to private and business banking specialists. Later this year, he plans to sit for the CFA Level I exam on his career path to becoming a financial analyst. “Every week he helped other students in class to better understand the materials and where they could find information in the text,” Management Instructor Patrick Delaney said. “Steve is goal-oriented both in his career potential and in his immediate certification efforts to become a Certified Financial Analyst. He is a serious student and represents the school well.” Deeloo arrived at Northeastern in 2013 after graduating from Mather High School in Chicago. In one of his first classes, he befriended a Marketing major named Brian.

NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Deeloo’s “zeal for learning” was an inspiration to English Language Program Instructor Christine Swanson and the other students in the two classes they shared together. “Steve was a model student, and honestly, I especially looked forward to teaching these two courses because his interest in learning was contagious,” Swanson said. “Steve proved to be an empathetic listener and an important contributor to class discussions and group activities. I found Steve’s greatest strengths to be his willingness to listen to others, to analyze every concept with a critical eye and to jump on every opportunity to apply what he was learning.” As much as his instructors appreciate Deeloo’s contributions to class, he equally appreciates what he takes away from those classes. “I couldn’t have asked for anything better or been any more proud of my school,” Deeloo said. “The fact that Northeastern supports the community, it helps the community do better, it gives them the chance they need. You can’t put a price on that.”

NEIU Foundation What an Amazing Year! In April 2017, we publicly launched Transforming Lives, the Campaign for Northeastern Illinois University. At that time, we had already raised more than $6 million toward our goal of $10 million. With tremendous support from alumni and friends, we reached that $10 million in January this year. However, the campaign does not officially conclude until December 31, 2018. What is one to do in such a circumstance? The answer is obvious: Keep it going! And we did. Northeastern announced a stretch goal – to raise $12 million by the end of 2018. As of June 30, we surpassed $11.6 million. That number was helped by an extraordinary year in fundraising. The following pages provide some highlights and statistics from the 2018 fiscal year, including names of our generous donors who made gifts between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. As we conclude the Transforming Lives campaign, my fellow Board members and I want to thank every one of you. Every gift – of every amount – has been the reason for our success. In particular, we recognize campaign co-chair Daniel L. Goodwin for his leadership campaign gift. Through his Goodwin Gift Challenge, Mr. Goodwin has inspired current and new donors to double the difference they make for NEIU.

of knowledge and experience in higher education to Northeastern and is enthusiastic to work with the NEIU Foundation in our fundraising efforts. As you read about the Foundation’s results from this past year, we hope you will continue to keep Northeastern as one of your philanthropic priorities. You make a world of difference! On behalf of my fellow Foundation Board members, thank you for your continued investment in the students, faculty and staff of Northeastern Illinois University.

Margo Odiko-Pim graduated in December 2017, but her work with Northeastern Illinois University did not end there. As a Psychology major, Odiko-Pim conducted research on black children’s perceptions of who is fit to be a leader. That effort earned her a $1,000 Student Travel Award scholarship from the NEIU Foundation to present her research at the 48th Annual Conference of the Jean Piaget Society in Amsterdam in the summer of 2018. The experience was cultural, educational and unforgettable.

“I received a lot of positive feedback,” said OdikoPim, a native of Ghana. “A whole lot of people were asking questions, like whether I would continue to research that topic to include other races or other countries or states or cities.”

A leader in the study of leadership

The answer is yes. Odiko-Pim will pursue a master’s degree—and continue researching—at Roosevelt University and ultimately hopes to work in the field of industrial psychology as an expert in conflict resolution, workplace mental health and workplace psychology.

The experience in Amsterdam was transformational for Odiko-Pim. “I had put in so much work. That was a crowning moment,” she said. “This has paved the way for me to know how to do a poster presentation, how to mingle with people from psychology backgrounds. I met a lot of intelligent, learned people. It’s set me up for a great future in the field.” Odiko-Pim’s mentor is excited about her potential in academia and beyond.

“Margo is a great combination of being kind, bright, resourceful and hard working,” Psychology Professor Saba Ayman-Nolley said. “She is intent on improving her knowledge and skill and is dedicated with persistence needed to accomplish challenging tasks. I believe Margo will rise to any academic occasion and opportunity that will be given to her and meet the challenges with her quiet smiles and commitment to excellence and success.”

Odiko-Pim started college in Africa before moving to the United States in 2015. She took a few classes at Harry S Truman College, then transferred to Northeastern. “I didn’t know what to expect at Northeastern, but it was a good experience for me,” she said. “I learned a lot in class and out of class. My time at Northeastern was a constant learning process.” Looking back as she now prepares for graduate school, Odiko-Pim has no regrets about her time at Northeastern. “Northeastern has some of the best instructors I have ever met. They take their time to make sure you’re OK academically and personally,” she said. “Choosing Northeastern was one of the best decisions of my life.”
