150 Strong Northeastern Illinois University

Letter from the Interim President The President's Report that you have before you records the most noteworthy events and the remarkable achievements of the 2016-2017 year at Northeastern Illinois University. It has been a challenging year that has tested our limits and endurance. We've learned to adapt and evolve, yet we have never strayed from our mission in spite of an unprecedented lack of state funding that lasted for more than two years. As we always do, we have banded together as a community and have taken the steps to secure the future of our institution. Naming just two examples, we've cleared the hurdles to earn specialized accreditation for our programs, and we launched an ambitious, comprehensive fundraising campaign. All of this, of course, is done with our students in mind. As you know, we have the best students around; but for some, the deck is stacked against them. We continue to be earnest in our resolve to provide all our students with the wherewithal to thrive academically and graduate so they can make a resounding impact on society. We have done this since we started in 1867. Here at Northeastern, we are the in midst of University-wide conversations and town hall discussions to determine how we can chart the next 150 years.

How will we know if we are successful? You tell us. I see our potential for shared leadership in this pursuit of growth and excellence. This is, after all, the spirit of the “exceptional environment for learning, teaching and scholarship" that is as well-ingrained into our Mission as it is into our psyche. So when accrediting bodies approve our curricular offerings, trusted sources acknowledge our diversity, value and safety, and friends and donors like you support our fundraising campaign, I am especially proud. You'll read more about this in this year's President's Report, which I hope will make you, too, proud — not only of our venerable 150year history but also of the impact we're making today that will build our University's future. Thank you for your continued and unending support of Northeastern Illinois University. Sincerely,

Richard J. Helldobler Interim President

Accounting adds up for

Anna Davydova She’s now laser-focused on her next goal: the CPA exam

On track to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Northeastern Illinois University in 2018, Anna Davydova is focused on only one thing: passing the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. “Once she passes the CPA exam, there will be no stopping her,” Associate Professor of Management Information Systems Charletta Gutierrez said. “Anna has that drive, that potential. She will be very successful in whatever she chooses to do.” While Davydova hasn’t chosen a career path just yet, she is not concerned. She could work in tax accounting, public accounting or even launch her own business. As she eagerly looks ahead to preparations for the CPA exam, Davydova is confident in her decision to enroll at Northeastern, an affordable, AACSB-accredited university with evening classes that accommodate her full-time job. “This has been a great opportunity for me,” said Davydova, who moved to

NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2017 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

“They’re brilliant people. They teach in a way that accommodates every student—not only the ones that are already doing well in class but also the ones who are falling behind.” Chicago from Izhevsk, Russia, 10 years ago. “I’m doing well in class, and I enjoy Northeastern a lot.” Davydova came to the United States with an education in mechanical engineering but found that the Russian degree was not the equivalent of a degree from an American institution. At a crossroads, she decided to pursue accounting, which is not as big of a leap as one might imagine.

“Accounting has a very close feel to engineering,” Davydova said. “I really like logic and numbers, so this made sense.” She quickly learned to love her professors, whom she said “encourage students to pursue their goals in life.” “They’re brilliant people,” Davydova said. “They teach in a way that accommodates every student—not only the ones that are already doing well in class but also the ones who are falling behind.” A top student in the College of Business and Management—she even sits in the front row of every class—Davydova has earned the mutual respect of her professors for her quiet but unwavering work ethic. “Anna takes pride in the work she does for every assignment and every class,” Gutierrez said. “She just has this desire to succeed. She knows that if she gets an education, she’ll be successful.”

More on accreditation Do you want to know more about what AACSB accreditation means for students, parents and potential employers?

Visit neiu.edu/aacsb for all of the details.

Accreditation: COBM earns AACSB In August 2016, the University’s College of Business and Management earned initial accreditation by AACSB International -- The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools that offer undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees in business and accounting. AACSB accreditation has been earned by less than 5 percent of the world’s business programs, which includes more than 775 business schools in 52 countries and territories. “This is an historic moment in the nearly 150-year history of Northeastern Illinois University,” Interim President Richard J.

4

Helldobler said. “I commend College of Business and Management’s Dean Michael Bedell, the college’s faculty and staff, and the students for their efforts in achieving AACSB accreditation.” Northeastern’s College of Business and Management offers Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Accounting degrees. Undergraduate students may pursue the Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Accounting, Finance, General Business Administration, Management, and Marketing. The college also offers undergraduate minors in Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, and

International Business for those who wish to supplement or expand coursework in other disciplines. The College of Business and Management emphasizes learning through a variety of teaching methods, research and service. “We have always taken pride in the value of a degree from the College of Business and Management, and this accreditation further enhances that value for our diverse community of current students, future students and alumni in an increasingly global business environment,” Bedell said. “This accreditation is a testament to their leadership and constant pursuit of excellence.”

National Association of Schools of Music reaccreditation Northeastern has earned reaccreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) through 2024. Accreditation symbolizes “a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between the work of individual institutions and the work of the entire community of institutions that prepare musicians at the collegiate level,” according to the NASM website. The accreditation applies to Northeastern’s Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Bachelor of Music in Performance and Master of Arts in Applied Music Pedagogy. “The renewal of our National Association of Schools of Music accreditation is a tribute to the hard work of our faculty

and staff, and especially our former and current students,” said Travis Heath, acting chair of the Department of Music and Dance. “We are proud of this status and look forward to serving our students with world-class music instruction for years to come.” The NASM Commission on Accreditation applauded Northeastern for its continued support of the arts during the state’s financial crisis. “The Commission commends the institution ... for the institutional support provided to the music unit particularly given the current challenging financial circumstances,” the Commission wrote in its reaccreditation letter.

Council on Social Work Education reaccreditation The University’s Bachelor of Arts in Social Work program received reaccreditation in December 2016 by the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Commission on Accreditation through 2024. Accreditation of the baccalaureate social work program indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for the assessment of program quality evaluated through a peer review process and demonstrates compliance with all sections of the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards. Additionally, Northeastern’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program was granted candidacy for accreditation by the CSWE. Candidacy applies to all program sites and program delivery methods of an accredited

NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2017 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

program. Accreditation provides reasonable assurance about the quality of the program and the competence of students graduating from the program. Accreditation allows students to be eligible for advanced-standing MSW programs such as Northeastern’s as well as pursue state licensure. “This is great news for the program, the students and Northeastern as we continue to be one of the most affordable public universities in the Midwest,” Professor and Social Work Program Chair Jade Stanley said. Students who enter programs that attain candidacy in or before the academic

year in which they begin their program of study will be retroactively recognized as having graduated from a CSWE-accredited program once the program attains initial accreditation. The CSWE is a nonprofit national association representing more than 2,500 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Founded in 1952, the partnership of educational and professional institutions, social welfare agencies and private citizens is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in this country.

University Highlights Northeastern Distinctions 2016-17 Midwest’s most diverse university Northeastern is the most diverse university in the Midwest, according to data released in November by The Wall Street Journal/ Times Higher Education College Ranking. Nationally, Northeastern ranks 22nd. The rankings were calculated by tracking diversity measures such as the racial and ethnic mix of students, the number of international students and the number of students from less fortunate financial backgrounds.

boasts the most diverse student population among Midwest regional universities and graduates its students with the least amount of student debt. This marks the third year in a row that Northeastern has earned the No. 1 spot for students who graduate with the least amount of debt among Midwest regional universities. Only 48 percent of Northeastern’s 2015 graduating class incurred debt, and those students borrowed an average of $15,713.

One of nation’s best for adult learners

Northeastern students graduate with the ninth-lowest student loan debt nationally among public four-year colleges and universities, according to a report released in August 2016. Among all four-year colleges and universities, Northeastern ranks 28th. The report was released by LendEDU, an online student loan and student loan refinance company. LendEDU’s first Student Loan Debt By School By State Report was created using licensed Peterson’s financial aid data that is provided by the institutions.

Washington Monthly magazine named Northeastern one of the nation’s Best Colleges for Adult Learners in its September/ October 2016 issue. Northeastern ranks 32nd on the list of four-year universities.

Distinguished Teaching Award goes to Dr. Ana Fraiman In October 2016, Northeastern selected Chemistry Professor Ana Fraiman as the 2016 recipient of the Audrey Reynolds Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Emerita of Linguistics Audrey Reynolds established the award to be given annually to a tenured member of the Northeastern faculty who best demonstrates distinguished teaching. “It is a pleasure to see Dr. Fraiman honored for her relentless dedication to our students,” former Acting Provost Vicki Roman-Lagunas said. “She serves as a wonderful example of the commitment to our student body that our faculty members demonstrate every day.” The finalists showed evidence of excellence in teaching, and in each of the dossiers the committee found evidence of innovation, high standards and a positive impact on students at the University. After careful review, the committee recommended Fraiman as the recipient of the award, which was formally presented to her at the December 2016 Commencement Ceremony.

Dr. Tony Adams earns NEIU research professor award Associate Professor of Communication, Media and Theatre Tony Adams was honored in April with Northeastern’s 2017 Bernard J. Brommel Distinguished Research Professor award. Bernard J. Brommel, Professor Emeritus of Communication, Media and Theatre, established the award to be given annually to the tenured or tenure-track member of the Northeastern faculty who best demonstrates excellence in research and scholarship. Most of Adams’ research focuses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer concerns such as identity management, stigma and social support. For his first book, “Narrating the Closet” (Routledge), Adams interviewed lesbians and gay men, analyzed texts about sexual identity, and documented his own experiences as a queer man to identify struggles with disclosing same-sex attraction -- often referred to as “coming out of the closet.” “The Brommel award is a tribute to Dr. Adams’ body of impressive research during his tenure at Northeastern Illinois University,” former Acting Provost Vicki Roman-Lagunas said. “He is a great asset and a wonderful colleague, and we look forward to his future contributions to the field.”

Jarrett, White deliver Commencement addresses Chicago lawyer and civic leader Valerie B. Jarrett, the longest-serving senior adviser to President Barack Obama, was Northeastern’s May 2017 Commencement speaker. Northeastern awarded Jarrett an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of her achievements. During her time working for Obama, Jarrett oversaw the Offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs and chaired the White House Council on Women and Girls. She worked throughout her tenure at the White House to mobilize elected officials, business and community leaders, and diverse groups of advocates. “Over her many years of service in Chicago and in Washington, D.C., Valerie Jarrett has consistently demonstrated herself to be a champion of equality and opportunity for all,” Interim President Richard Helldobler said. “Those values are at the root of who we are at this institution.” During the December Commencement ceremony, Northeastern alumnus Thomas White gave the keynote address, touching on themes of diversity, social responsibility and giving back. In his address, White noted Northeastern’s ranking as the most diverse university in the Midwest. “I want each of you to be a guardian of diversity and inclusion,” he said. “I want you to be inclusive of all people to drive innovation. Understanding and harvesting the power of diversity and inclusion is a key to a better future for you. Take that as a gift that Northeastern has given you.” White, who graduated from Northeastern in 1981 with a degree in Physical Education, was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Students inspired by ChicagoCHEC experience As Northeastern Illinois University prepares for the Fall 2017 semester, six students will bring the summer fellowship learning experiences of a lifetime back to class with them. The Chicago Cancer Health Equity Collaborative (ChicagoCHEC) Research Fellows Program provided a diverse and talented cohort of 16 students from Northeastern, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the City Colleges of Chicago with eight weeks of full-time, hands-on learning from some of the nation’s leading researchers. In addition, three of last year’s students served as senior fellows, mentoring and helping new students navigate the program. The goal: help students from underrepresented communities with the development of academic, technical and professional skills in preparation for careers in social, behavioral and biomedical research and in health care. The fellowship program is in its second year as part of ChicagoCHEC, a National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer partnership led by Northeastern, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and UIC, whose mission is to advance cancer health equity through meaningful scientific discovery, education, training and community engagement. University Highlights

Transforming Lives: Northeastern launches $10 million fundraising campaign What can $10 million do for Northeastern Illinois University? We’re about to find out. The University publicly launched the first fundraising campaign in its 150-year history on April 7 with a kickoff event attended by presidents past and present, trustees, students, alumni, faculty, staff, NEIU Foundation Board members and close friends of Northeastern. “Now, on the eve of our 150th anniversary, we are here to celebrate the light and education that Northeastern Illinois University provides,” Interim President Richard Helldobler said. Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Northeastern Illinois University centers around two initiatives: Extraordinary Scholarship Support and Exceptional Learning Environments. Through the effort, Northeastern will build strong resources for scholarships and for colleges, departments and programs that are necessary for the future. During the kickoff event, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Liesl Downey unveiled the campaign’s official website and a video that was narrated by retired WGN TV news anchor and alumnus Robert Jordan (M.A. ‘94 Speech). “There’s not one person in this room who doesn’t believe in the power of this university to change people -- to transform lives for the better,” said Downey, who also serves as Executive Director of the NEIU Foundation. “You represent thousands of Northeastern’s biggest fans and supporters.” While the campaign kickoff was focused on the University’s bright future, NEIU Foundation Board President John Roskopf reflected on past successes, highlighting the fact that the Foundation has doubled its charitable support to Northeastern since 2014, boosted the number of endowed scholarships from 103 to 136 and increased the average scholarship from $990 to $1,065.

“A successful campaign needs a strong body of internal support, alumni, friends, and national recognition for quality academic achievement by faculty and graduates,” said Steinberg, who served as president from 1995 to 2007. “And, we want to make campus visitors stop, notice and wonder as they take in our campus culture and student achievement, our rich diversity among students, faculty and staff, and our overall distinctiveness. We are ready for this campaign. We are already traveling on the road.” While the campaign was publicly launched on April 7, its roots trace back to 2014, when Hahs recognized the University’s 150-year anniversary as an ideal time to launch a campaign. As is typical for university campaigns, the NEIU Foundation quietly raised $6 million toward the campaign before the public kickoff. The goal now is to reach $10 million by the end of 2018. Transforming Lives launched as Northeastern and the rest of the state’s public universities approached their second full year without a state appropriation. Helldobler acknowledged the changes in the reliability of state funds but did not shy away from the challenge. “Now is the ideal time to publicly declare this campaign -- when our students, future leaders and taxpayers need it the most,” he said. “Northeastern is the light and education. Our students are the future of this country and the leaders we so desperately need. Yes, Northeastern transforms lives, and it has never been more important than right now to help us continue that work.”

Much of that success can be attributed to the Goodwin Gift Challenge, in which alumnus and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees Daniel Goodwin pledged an unprecedented $2.5 million. Goodwin presented Helldobler with a $500,000 check for the successful first year of the matching challenge. “I give this check as an expression of my confidence that Northeastern is ready for great things,” Goodwin said. “I am proud of everyone who has contributed. Let’s keep this going.” Goodwin serves as one of three honorary co-chairs for the campaign, along with Presidents Emerita Salme Harju Steinberg and Sharon Hahs.

NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY I 2015 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

NEIU Foundation Greetings! On behalf of the Foundation Board, I want to express our deepest appreciation to the more than 4,500 donors who have invested in the Transforming Lives campaign during the course of Northeastern Illinois University’s inaugural campaign. In fiscal year 2017, your collective donations came to more than $1.74 million and have raised the NEIU Foundation’s endowment to $10.2 million up from $8.6 million in fiscal year 2016.

Your support and gifts of all sizes continue to bring us ever closer to the campaign goal. Together, we will reach $10 million.

We publicly launched the campaign on April 7 with three honorary co-chairs: Distinguished Alumnus Daniel L. Goodwin and Presidents Emerita Salme Harju Steinberg and Sharon K. Hahs. As of July 2017, we are making excellent progress with $7.8 million raised, and of that number, $6.2 million in cash. Together, we will reach our goal of $10 million by December 31, 2018. Your support of Northeastern’s pioneering Transforming Lives campaign provides critical resources to leverage this special university’s wealth of assets: diverse, ambitious students; a talented, dedicated faculty; rich, relevant programs in the arts, sciences, business and education; and a vast community of talented and distinguished alumni. From many gifts of $20.17 that graduating students made to the Class Gift Scholarship fund to the early completion of the $500,000 Goodwin Gift Challenge that was subsequently matched by Mr. Goodwin, your support and gifts of all sizes continue to bring us ever closer to the campaign goal. More importantly, you provide strong support for the success and

persistence of our students and vital resources for our faculty as Northeastern embarks upon its next 150 years. In these next several pages, we are pleased to share with you a few highlights of the NEIU Foundation in fiscal year 2017. You will find a list of generous donors who have made gifts between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017, and information about the NEIU Foundation’s scholarships and fundraising progress. We hope this is helpful as you consider how Northeastern fits into your philanthropic priorities in the coming years. On behalf of my fellow Foundation Board members, we are sincerely grateful for your investment in Northeastern.

More than that, he loves to lead student groups on study tours. In fact, during his 31-year tenure at Northeastern, Stuart has led 17 study trips to cities such as Barcelona, Warsaw and Munich. Committed to teaching and learning through travel, Stuart believes it is important for students to travel and study abroad as part of their college experience. Exposure to places far from home is the kind of life lesson that can’t be learned in the classroom. In addition to the sights, food and culture, travel abroad prepares students for an increasingly global employment landscape. “Having some study abroad experience is really a step up in just being able to expand their employment possibilities,” Stuart said. “Once they get employed, having had study abroad experience helps them move up the career ladder with whatever organization they happen to work for.” Since 2001, the NEIU Foundation has offered the Student Travel Award, which provides funding for major travel expenses to undergraduate and graduate students who are presenting their work at academic conferences, but no such fund existed for economics- and business-minded students who wanted to study abroad. Until now. Stuart’s study tours caught the notice of a colleague, Associate Professor of Economics Michael Wenz, whose first trip abroad was in 2014 to Madrid, Spain, where he presented a paper at a conference.

“Two years later I spent my sabbatical semester in Poland working at Politechnika Czestochowa and the Warsaw School of Economics, and I had the chance to meet up with Ed’s study tour group while they were in Budapest,” Wenz said. “It was easy to see how much the students appreciated the opportunity.” Wenz became a champion of Stuart’s study tours, encouraging his students to engage in travel-study. But he wanted more. After discussing it with his Department of Economics colleagues, Wenz took a new idea to Stuart. “Ed retired from the full-time faculty a few years ago, but he continues to teach and lead our travel study group. I wanted to plan for the future and make sure that travel-study remains a part of the Economics Department and that Ed’s good work lives on,” Wenz said. “We are excited to create a scholarship in his honor. I can’t think of a more appropriate way to help prepare our students to lead in the world.” Stuart’s reaction to the proposed Edward F. Stuart Legacy Fund: “I was thrilled.” “It’s a great combination of philanthropy and helping students at Northeastern in general, but specifically students who need to study abroad but don’t have all of the necessary funds,” said Stuart, who himself was unable to travel as a student due to financial limitations. “I think study abroad for students at Northeastern is really valuable because they don’t usually come from families that do that, so it’s really crucial.” Together, Stuart, his family and the Economics Department established the fund with a matching grant. Stuart will match

the first $5,000 in donations. In addition, Wenz will contribute $25 to the Economics Department Foundation for each of the first 20 contributions of $25 or more, and Economics Department faculty will contribute $100 for each of the first five donations of $100 or more. “It all came together like things do in life. Things happen together sometimes by chance, but the right chances happen at the right time,” Stuart said. Once the Edward F. Stuart Legacy Fund is fully established, it will be used to support student travel, both in study abroad programs and academic endeavors. Application and eligibility details will be announced soon. The scholarship fund is not the only way Stuart is giving back to students. He also has decided to include Northeastern in his will. “At the same time we were setting up this scholarship fund, my siblings and I had taken over my father’s estate and I didn’t have a will. My sister, who was the executrix, said, ‘You need to have a will,’” Stuart said. “I thought, now’s the time to give some money to my family members, but they are otherwise taken care of. Northeastern was the logical choice as to what to do with the other parts of it.”

It’s money well spent, Stuart said. “In terms of getting a return,” Stuart said, “I can’t think of any other university students anywhere in the country that are more deserving and will be helped more than by donating to one of Northeastern’s scholarship funds or the Leader Fund.”
