DAWSON CREEK – Shell Canada confirmed last Thursday, Feb. 2 that they have agreed to sell 20 per cent of their interest in the 100 per cent Shell owned Groundbirch Upstream project, to state-owned PetroChina. Executives at Shell and PetroChina have not released the cost of the sale. The deal is the latest in the Shell-PetroChina partnership. In the past the two oil and gas giants have partnered in countries like Australia and Qatar, and have jointly acquired Australian gas company, Arrow Energy Limited in 2010. “PetroChina is an important strategic partner for Shell globally ... together we are developing our
business in China, which is around shale and tight gas – including wells management and many other initiatives... We are also cooperating in a global drilling venture,” said Patty Richards, communications with Shell, in an email. Shell owns approximately 160,000 acres in their Groundbirch asset, and can output 125 million cubic feet of natural gas a day. Richards, says the sale results in approximately 31,350 net acres being sold to PetroChina. “The deal includes lands with production but does not affect any of the lands where we share interests with others nor any exploration lands,” Richards said.

With the deal, Shell will remain the operator of the site, and altogether the area will see little change. “Shell remains the operator of Groundbirch. Our employees will not be impacted nor will you see much difference on the ground. We can expect a few PetroChina employees to join our team in Calgary,” Richards said. “We will hold to our current field development plan - a plan that is reflective of the nature of the gas and focus on safe, responsible, staged development which maximizes the use of our production facilities. Our current pace also reflects other factors affecting field development plans such as the gas price and other economic considerations,” she adds.

Helping non-profits achieve ‘family friendly’ status By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN – To ensure all venues are meeting their highest potential of being inclusive, non-profit organizations spoke to members alike on what it means to have a family friendly atmosphere.

Coun. Trevor Bolin opens up the Family Friendly Environment Kit launch at a luncheon on Jan. 31.
“Family friendly is a culture that we want to instill in the community … to make sure that their needs are being addressed,” said Lynn Locher project consultant for the Family Friendly Initiative. Making sure that businesses and non-profits are standing by that mantra, Family Friendly launched its second tool kit. It is designed for non-profits to self-assess their venue and HR policies addressing work-life balance issues with their employees and clients. “This kit that we’re launching right now is aimed at not-for-profit and it looks at seven different components,” said Locher. The Child Development Centre, Friendship Centre, North Peace Community Resource Centre, the Literacy Outreach Program, School District 60 and Andrew Tylosky from Big Ideas educated fellow non-profit organizations on each of the components that make up a true Family Friendly environment. To see if your organization is on the right track, you can take the survey at Familyfriendlycommunities.ca, which will be availbable on the website in the near future. “If they meet a certain score on the family friendly checklist they can earn a family friendly designation so that they can use it in their recruiting materials,” said Locher. Family Friendly is a national initiative funded by the Government of Canada’s Social Development Partnerships Program. It covers the geographical region of the North Peace and Northern Rockies.

SD 59 considering four calendars for 2012/2013 school year By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- School District 59 is asking for input on proposed school calendars for the 2012/2013 school year from parents, teachers, Parent Advisory Committees, as well as other individuals and groups. Four calendars are being reviewed, including the Ministry of Education’s Standard calendar, two alternate calendars, and a Balanced School Calendar. The standard calendar and the two alternates differ slightly from each other. The Standard Calendar has 194 days in session with 187 days of instruction and seven non-instructional days set aside for professional development for teachers. Alternate Calendar (1) has 190 days in session with 183 days of instruction, and like the Standard Calendar has seven days for professional development. The Alternate Calendar (1) also features a two-week spring break. Alternate Calendar (2) also has a two-week spring break, with 190 days in session and 187 days of instruction. Four of the seven days scheduled for professional development in this calendar are during the month of Aug. when students are not in school. The Balanced School calendar has 194 days in session, 187 days of instruction, and seven days of professional develop-
ment. This option sounds much like the Standard Calendar, but the difference comes in number of school breaks. The Balanced School Calendar has four breaks during the school year: 11 days to break for Thanksgiving, a three week break for winter, another three week break for spring, and approximately four weeks being scheduled for summer break instead of the traditional eight weeks. The School District provides a report done by the Vancouver Board of Education, listing schools that have switched to this type of calendar along with their positive and negative experiences. “Advocates for a balanced calendar feel that many aspects of learning improve in a year-round schedule, including student attendance, attitude, and academic achievement, and that teachers have greater job satisfaction, as well. They state that teachers, students, and parents seem to like this system. To add to these
PRRD to present plan for SP Fringe Area at open houses By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- The Peace River Regional District will make its way into three communities next week to present a draft of the South Peace Fringe Area Official Community Plan. The plan includes objectives and policies to guide decision making and planning in the area concerning resources, agriculture, commercial ventures, rural places, industrial areas, the environment, and Parks and Recreation; covering approximately 95,900 hectors in the fringe area. Residents of the fringe areas in the South Peace including, the rural areas surrounding Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe, and residents of Tomslake, Tupper, Briar Ridge, Bessborough, Upper Cutbank, and Arras are encouraged to participate in the
“Confirming Community Direction,” open house. Residents of these communities provided feedback, offering their voice to the community plan and to the PRRD in Feb., Oct., and Nov. of 2009 through school visits, open houses, and community surveys. The upcoming open houses are opportunities for the residents to see if the plan reflects their views, and for them to provide more feedback. Continued on Page 15.
benefits, the balanced calendar can be highly effective in reducing school operating costs,” the report states. Not all experiences with the calendar were positive, however. “Opponents to the balanced calendar argue that there is no substantial increase in academic student achievement when students are on a year-round schedule as opposed to a traditional schedule and that the research proposing the benefits of a balanced calendar is limited and inadequate. In addition, students, parents and caretakers must deal with schedule challenges and adaptation to change,” the report states. Community members in School District 59 can complete an online survey, or email or write to principals or superintendent Kathy Sawchuk by March, 6. The Board is expected to make their decision on March, 7.

13-year-old boy wins $11,000—gives Taylor Curling boost By Kyla Corpuz
TAYLOR – Point zero three of an inch was the determining factor to $11,000. Thirteen-year-old Kyle Kimmie won the Junior Draw to the Button at the Grand Slam in Dawson Creek. He advanced to the final after nailing the rock 35.5 inches to the pin beating out his component, Jayden Giesbrecht who was 35.8 inches to the pin. He took home the win in the finals garnering $1,000 for himself and $10,000 for his home curling club in Taylor. “We’ve been struggling,” said Kyle’s mom Wendy Kimmie, regarding the Taylor Curling Club’s recent state. The Kimmie family does the rink’s ice maintenance. Curling isn’t as prevalent as it used to be. “It has been dropping off everywhere, it costs us money every year,” said Taylor Curling Club president Greg Haugen. But the game has turned around thanks to volunteer efforts. “We have good volunteer work, people are really making a commitment

to the club.” Wendy also testified to the club’s teamwork. “I know our club has really pulled together this year,” she said. “Our volunteers have been working very hard.” The money won was just the “icing on the cake.” “The $10,000 … will give us money to operate for a couple of years and it’s a real bonus that’s for sure,” said Haugen. Wendy added that the funds would go towards upgrading their ice shaving equipment and water system. As for Kyle, he’s put his share into savings that will one day buy him a Ford truck. “We were all very excited for him, he’s worked very hard at his curling game so it was really exciting to see him do that for himself and our curling club,” said Wendy. Asides from playing on the competitive Junior Team for Skip Sterling Middleton in Fort St. John, Kyle also plays with his dad and helps him make ice at the Taylor Curling Club. The club hosts an array of fundraisers, and volunteer efforts are what keep the club alive said Wendy. The Taylor Curling Club has been a part of the community for 32 years. It is a venue for local bonspiels and a gathering place for residents to relax at the end of their day. “It’s a fun atmosphere, curling is a big part of Canada’s game, it would be sad if that history was lost,” said Wendy. A number of events will be hosted to continue to raise money for the club and draw attention to the sport. On Feb.11 and 12 the local firemen will be hosting a bonspiel for the Taylor Curling Club and the Taylor Elementary School’s local playground committee; a ladies bonspiel will be on Feb. 18 and 19; the Peace Curling Association will host a mixed district Playdown on Mar. 2, 3 and 4; and on Mar. 17 and 18 is the No Sleep No Sweep bonspiel, a two on two all-nighter to raise money for the club.

It also opens doors for them to get the connections to play future shows in and around our community. Our festival has something for all ages and

The festival will also feature a magic show, an art opening, movie presentations, circus workshops, knitting sessions, and art classes. “We chose February because generally that’s a month where we don’t have a lot of things going on in our community. Because it’s such a long winter, we decided to give everybody kind of a special treat between Christmas and spring; this year is not the norm. Everybody is not complaining about the weather but that’s generally how it is,” Casselman said. With the help of a grant, the Council hosted a Spirit Festival last year, celebrating one year since the Winter Olympics. “Last year we focused on visual artists, so we were in local businesses and they had the art displayed and it was a really really nice effect for the whole month, everybody really enjoyed it. This year we decided to go with performing artists, and just support a lot of our local musicians within our community,” Cas-

selman said. Casselman says that the Council hopes to make the festival an annual event in hopes of enhancing the cultural experience in the community. “We’re going to switch it up every year, probably next yearwe’ll always have music, music is something that is one of our main focuses anyway- we’ll have more poetry, and a little bit more visual artists, we’ll kind of have a blend next year,” she said. The festival hopes to provide social opportunities and a way of curing the winter blues, and is very affordable, so more people can enjoy. “I think it helps people get out and get a break from everyday life, it’s just something to go and experience and music always seems to lift people’s spirits this time of the year is usually when people have problems with depression and stuff like that, so it would be giving them something to do,” she said.

The T-Bar: The great equalizer
Northeast NEWS
EDITORIAL
Standing in line waiting for the first skiing or snowboarding session of the season and watching kids a quarter of your age in brand name matching gear, speeding down the hill, while doing all sorts of jumps and other tricks can be intimidating, especially for a beginner. Adding to the intimidation of the hill, and the reluctancy for beginners is a very important hill staple: the dreaded T-Bar. The only way to go down is first by getting up, and unless you prefer walking up, the T-Bar must be faced. For those who have had the luxury of only being escorted by chair lift before, the T-Bar is exactly as it sounds. The upside down T, can either be sat on by skiers then ridden forward, or one of the bars can be placed between the legs of a snowboarder and sideways. Behind one hip is another option for snowboarders. These options sound perfectly reasonable, but like most things, it’s easier said then done. Try not to get too caught up in admiring the scenery while riding to the top, as you’re required to steer your equipment out of snow banks, and hold on for dear life, as the bar tends to shake aggressively every now and then. Also be sure to watch out for those who couldn’t hang on and have fallen before you. Those cautious of using the bar can take comfort in one thing: along with being an unstable mechanism for getting to the top, the T-Bar is also the great equalizer. No matter your skill level on the hill, at one time or another, everyone falls while riding up. So don’t feel bad if you end up face first in front of a long line, after only traveling a meter on the T. Chances are, the riders texting with one hand and smoking a cigarette with the other, during the ride up will too eventually end up face first. So don’t let the chance of embarrassment deter you from enjoying the local hill and the winter season- while it lasts. Jill
Prince George-Peace River MP Report ~ A Whirlwind Start to 2012 By Bob Zimmer, MP Prince George-Peace River With the House of Commons on winter break, this past month I took part in several events and meetings throughout the riding. Starting off in Fort Nelson, I met with the District Council to discuss infrastructure needs in the region. I will be bringing these needs to the attention of the Infrastructure Minister as we resume Parliament. Next up was the annual BC Natural Resource Forum in Prince George. There I had the opportunity to meet with industry leaders and officially thank former federal minister Stockwell Day for his key note speech on the need for regulatory reform. Following the Forum, I met with the Prince George City Council to discuss the city’s priorities moving forward. Then, I was back in Fort Nelson to announce an investment in upgrades to an eight kilometre stretch of the Alaska Highway in the Fort Nelson area. Heading back to Prince George, I met up with the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue,
to take part in an economic consultation with the Prince George Chamber of Commerce and then a visit to the Pineview Firehall to promote the new nonrefundable tax credit for volunteer firefighters. From there, it was off to Fort St. John to announce $980,000 in gas tax funding to assist the Peace River Regional District in constructing a gas management facility at the Fort St. John Landfill. While in Fort St. John I met with the City Council to discuss future plans for the city and gave a speech to the Chamber of Commerce highlighting our Government’s priorities in 2012 and to discuss important initiatives we have introduced to assist small business owners. I also met with the North Peace Rod and Gun Club to talk about the Ending the Long-Gun Registry Act and to address other concerns. I then headed to Dawson Creek, where I held my first passport clinic. That afternoon we were able to help approximately 70 residents with their passport
applications. The clinic also provided me with the opportunity to meet with constituents one-on-one to answer any other questions they may have had. While my offices in Fort St. John and Prince George offer help with passport applications every day, with a riding as large as ours, I will be providing similar clinics to residents throughout the riding in the near future. And finally, it was off to Tumbler Ridge where I announced $265,000 in funding for the Palaeontology Research Centre and tour the facility. It’s been a busy month, but I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and spend time with so many people – whether it was during a scheduled meeting, or while standing in line at Tim Horton’s – and I am looking forward to doing similar tours in the future. As always, if you would like to get in touch with me, please feel free to contact my office in Fort St. John at 250-787-1194, Prince George at 250-5617982, or Ottawa at 613-947-4524.

Protecting the Pensions of Canadians Site C Sign installed on Peace River Dear Editor, I know many seniors have been asking one question recently – will my Old Age Security cheque stay the same? Many Canadians close to retirement have also been asking whether Old Age Security will be there for them when they reach 65. The answer to both questions is yes. The Harper Government is committed to protecting retirement income for today’s seniors, and for future generations of retirees. Canadians receive retirement income from a variety of sources, including the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security. The Canada Pension Plan is funded by premiums from each of our paycheques and it is on a safe, secure, and sustainable path. Old Age Security, on the other hand, is funded from general government revenue and is not sustainable in its current form. In 1975 there were seven working taxpayers for every senior. Because our population is getting older, today there are only four working-age Canadians for each senior. By 2030, the total number of seniors will nearly double, leaving only two working-age Canadians for each senior. Amidst these changing demographics, the annual cost of the Old Age Security program is projected to increase from $36 billion in 2010 to $108 billion in 2030. As a country, we cannot ignore the demographic challenges we will face. By focusing our efforts on making Old Age Security sustainable in the long term, we can ensure that future generations will have access to this program. I can guarantee you that any changes to Old Age Security will never affect anyone currently receiving benefits, nor will they ever affect any individual now nearing retirement. Other Canadians, who are not near retirement, will receive substantial notice of changes to Old Age Security, to ensure they have ample time to plan for their future. The Harper Government will take a fair and responsible approach to ensure that Old Age Security will be sustainable well into the future. Dear Editor, The last location of this sign was installed on the Peace River. The B.C. Government ordered it to be removed because they don’t want any opposition to Site C. This sign is now on private property at a turn out on the Hudson’s Hope Road overlooking the Peace River Valley. The B.C. Government should think twice about having this sign removed or destroyed. We will make two more if this one goes missing and four more if two goes missing, and etc. If the City of Calgary can build a new state of the art 1,000 megawatt gas fired cogen at $1.4 billion, BC Hydro or other want to be power producers could build 6 equally large 1,000-megawatt cogen for 6,000-megawatts of power for $8.4 billion which is far less than the cost of Site C and producing more electricity crossfield Alberta building a $150 million 120 megawatt cogen. Downtown Calgary building a $100 million 50-megawatt cogen. Why is the Calgary area doing this. Because this will have less impact on the environment and they are not vulnerable to long distance transmission lines. I am sure the $45 million of our money (The residents of BC’s money) that BC Hydro has wasted over the years could have been spent building showcase quality cogens that would have been producing power as needed where needed. No longer do we have to flood river valleys to have an abundance of electricity. Gas producing companies in the Horn River area need to be the end user of their own commodity Natural Gas to create their own electricity and they could always sell the excess to BC Hydro. Penny Gagnon, executive director at the CDC talked about the importance of a facility that caters to families like having an area to store strollers, free from obstacles and proper signage to welcome families.
Parent Involvement
Public Awareness
Stephen Petrucci from School District 60 spoke about the need for parents to be involved every step of the way by interacting through emails or social media.

Administration
It is vital to have staff that are skilled in supporting children and families, said Karla Marsh from the North Peace Community Resource Society. She added that flexible schedules for employees to fit in time for family needs is important.

Does your organization celebrate cultural diversity? Clarice Eckford, literacy outreach coordinator shared that it is crucial for employees or clients who are new to Canada to feel comfortable sharing their culture. One of Eckford’s colleagues shared her experience when first moving to Fort St. John. During a conversation with a man, she mentioned she was from Mexico. The man then asked: “Oh, so do you speak Mexican?” Eckford emphasized that it is important to be knowledgeable of other cultures, as well.

The most important thing to improve one’s work force is to communicate with the community, and find out what their needs are, said Anita Lee, executive director at the Friendship Centre. “If we are going to be accessible, we need to change our atmosphere.” Accessibility is key to any business. Lee said while renovating the Friendship Centre, she asked Lori Slater, chair of the Mayor’s Disability Advisory Committee to help identify the barriers. “Unless you’re willing to go out there and ask, how are you going to know?” Her last piece of advice was to work as a team and stick to priorities.

“Marketing and promoting your organization requires multiple platforms,” said social media expert and project coordinator of Big Ideas Andrew Tylosky, therefore it is vital to make sure content is up-to-date. Embracing and managing public feedback will help your organization grow as well as determining who your target audience is.
“Work on how you can create the parent/child interaction,” said Pam Lillico from the NPCRS and CDC. Having programs that address social gaps is key to creating a family friendly environment, said Lillico. She used the example of Daddy and Me Nights and Family Fun Nights, these programs are aimed to strengthen parent/child relationships.
Local takes on world stage By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN – A local woman was in the international spotlight on Feb. 6. Helen Knott, 24, from Prophet River First Nations was one of six Canadian Indigenous Youth Ambassadors who spoke to the UN Committee on children’s rights in Geneva, Switzerland. “It is a great honor to be chosen to speak about the inequities in child welfare, health and education that are facing Indigenous children and families,” said Knott in a press release. Knott is an active member in her community, late last year she organized a fundraiser to help her “brothers and sisters” in Attawapiskat, a northern Ontario reserve that gained attention for it’s harsh living conditions and poverty. “She has achieved and accomplished so much in her young life … she is a great role model for our youth,” said Prophet River First Nation’s Chief Lynette Tsakoza in the release. Knott is a mother to a fouryear-old son and recent graduate of the Social Service Worker and Diploma program and an Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program.

Northern Health celebrates a healthy ten years in D.C. and P.C. By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK — Northern Health celebrated their 10-year anniversary in Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe on Jan. 31 at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery. “Northern Health is truly coming into it’s own now and becoming a really well oriented entity, and that’s worth celebrating. So when we hit that ten year marker, it’s worth having a bit of cake,” said Jaret Clay, health services administrator for Northern Health. Accomplishments of Northern Health in the region over the last 10 years include the opening of Rotary Manor and the new hospital in Fort St. John, expected to open this year. Northern Health is currently working on a master plan for Tumbler Ridge’s health care services, and is in the middle of completing a master plan for Dawson Creek. “Master planning in Dawson 10611-101 Ave., FORt St. JOhN Creek is something that we need to say, ‘Hey, we have a huge oil and gas population here, what • Belts • Body Jewellery • Necklaces does that mean? health care in terms of the primary care delivery in the home. However, amidst celebrating the 10-year milestone and future endeavors, Clay noted there are still obstacles that lie ahead. “The real big challenge that we have, is to try and make sure that people get the same level of care, depending on the catchment area that they’re in, so people in a similar size community to Dawson Creek anywhere in the north would have similar types of services that we would be able to offer,” he said. Before the transition to Northern Health, health care was run by the South Peace Health Council. Northern Health changed when the province wanted to move regions that were controlled by health authorities into one health authority. The northern half of the province was then turned into Northern Health, and separated into three regions: the northwest, the northern interior, and the northeast. PRRD
Continued from Page 3.
“Community involvement was a large component of the SPFA OCP process. The PRRD hosted public engagement events…in order to collect public input from a diverse range of residents. Through comments received, residents provided a ‘voice’ into the OCP planning process,” the PRRD news release states. Among many policies, strategies, and objectives, the OCP lists some goals for the area. Under the environment the PRRD hopes to preserve and protect natural resources and rural identity and beauty of the areas; promote water conservation; protect wildlife; harmonize development and the natural environment; reduce environmental impacts of resources while maintaining a vibrant economic base; protect and enhance wildlife and wilderness connectivity opportunities; and promote the reduction of air pollutants. Economic goals include encouraging agriculture industry; support growth of rural communities; promote income diversification; recognize agriculture as a major industry; and achieve a balance that protects the well being of residents while ensuring a sustainable level of resource development. The PRRD also lists establishing guidelines to manage commercial and industrial development as a goal. They hope to work well with all levels of government to reduce conflicts caused by resource extraction activities. The OCP also sets goals for residential and commercial uses. Goals for residences include encouraging a variety of housing types to meet the needs of the diverse population in communities, while supporting a diverse economy and providing broad employment that is mindful of achieving a sustainable healthy community. When the PRRD conducted their open houses and surveys in 2009, they found that most residents were unsatisfied with the quality of life in the area. “Throughout the public input process, quality of life was one of the most pressing issues in the SPFA with an increasing number of people noting that they would not retire in the Wellness & Esthetic Services SPFA or in the PRRD because of the reduced quality of life,” the report states.
In order to rectify, the OCP sets out these goals: support access to sound primary healthcare for the community; support the monitoring of air quality; support the adoption of policies that contribute to the reduction of air pollution; minimize risks of life and property from natural hazards and disasters; minimize the bioaccumulation of human-made products and compounds into the surrounding biosphere. Open houses will be hosted on Feb. 14 at the Devereux Elementary School in Arras, Feb. 15 at the Tupper Community Hall in Tomslake, and Feb. 16 at the PRRD head office in Dawson Creek. Presentations start at 7p.m. for all open houses.

Annamarie’s delicious science By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN – As a teenager she decorated cakes for Dairy Queen, now she has plans to open her own bakery. At 22, Annamarie Desfosses has taken the art of baking and crafted it into a career. In her mother’s open kitchen, with wide counter tops and stainless steel appliances, Desfosses finishes the ultimate dessert for a client: Chocolate ganache and a light, fluffy mousse sandwiched between two layers of chocolate cake. Baking is Desfosses artistic outlet. “I decided that I wanted to do something with art, and I needed to make money,” she said while peeling open chocolate squares ready to be melted into ganache. “My mom was a baker … it’s definitely something I wanted to get into, so that’s why I chose to go to Here is my 6 month school for it.” She honed her skills at the Pacific Institute of old kitten named Culinary Arts in Vancouver. She is very Now Desfosses is onto a lovable & energetic! new endeavour that will let her put her teachings into practice. “I had thought previously Email your pet’s photo about working overseas, but in to the end Fort St. John is really editor@northeastnews.ca my home and this opportunity for a chance to win a came up, and I thought I would seize it.” That opportunity is to special prize from the open up a stand-alone bakery this summer. She’s hoping to North Peace settle into the heritage barn that Unforgettable Memories once Veterinary Clinic lived in, now located near 100 Avenue and 104 Street. From 1 pet will be chosen each week and will be breads, to pastries, muffins featured in the Northeast News. and cakes, Desfosses hopes to Each pet chosen will be entered into a draw satisfy the sweet and savory for a monthly prize supplied by the tooth.
She said chocolate would be a specialty made for holidays like Valentines. Chocolate is the diva of treats, it requires high-maintenance to get it perfect. Just one drop of water in the mixture could throw off the right consistency said Desfosses. But for the first time since school, she will try her hand at tempering the delectable dessert to make amaretto chocolate truffles for the Chocolate Festival on Feb. 11. “I’ve never worked with tempering chocolate down here.” She noted that the climate plays a big role in making chocolate. “There are rules with a lot of pastries, but with chocolate there are guidelines that you have to stick to … it has to be at a very strict temperature set to get it to the hard, crispy chocolate.” She refers to baking as a “delicious science”; and though it may seem daunting because precision cannot be gambled, Desfosses said it comes with practice and diligence. “Timing is everything, try things a number of times—persistence is key.”

Brownlee to open for Bentley By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- What started out as a hobby and a way to escape for ex-pro hockey player, Chad Brownlee, eventually turned into an unexpected career path. Brownlee will open for Dirks Bentley on Feb. 18 at the Encana Events Centre, four days after his second album, “Love me or Leave Me,” is scheduled to be released. The Kelowna, B.C. native spent most of his childhood and young adulthood preparing and dreaming of playing in the NHL, his hard work finally paid off when he was selected to be a defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks in 2003. Two shoulder surgeries he had approximately two years before being drafted, and another shoulder injury during his first and only year of playing pro hockey caused him to rethink his career choice. “I was out a couple of months and then I came back and that was the start of the slide for me, I just wasn’t able to play the game the way that I used to, and I think that was a huge reason on why I lost the passion for it because I wasn’t the player that I used to be and it seemed that my career was going in a different direction…it kind of worked out for the better. The injuries seemed like a bad thing at the time, but looking back on it was all apart of the story and it was all meant to happen,” Brownlee said. Brownlee became interested in country music when he was growing up, attributing his influence to Garth Brooks, as he was a big fan when he was younger. “I was very drawn to music, the emotional side of it. You’d hear certain songs that would bring out certain emotions and I was just so curious and drawn to that side of it, it kind of kept me pursuing it along side hockey…hockey was definitely number one up until I started to lose the love for it, and my passion for music just leap-frogged,” Brownlee said. Hockey was always his main priority, and music was just something he loved to do in his spare time. “When I was 17, I decided to pick up a guitar and that’s when I self taught myself and I started learning covers, and started writing after that, more of a musical journal more then anything. I really wasn’t thinking of taking it anywhere career wise because I was so focused on hockey. It started to progress and my love for hockey started to diminish and as soon as that gap started to increase I made the decision to change careers,” Brownlee said. Though he had the support of his family, adjusting to a new career was not as easy for Brownlee. “It was how I identified myself, it was who I was, I was a hockey player, everybody knew me as that, and all of a sudden you take that out of me and I have to redefine myself in a sense so there was definitely an adjustment period, and it wasn’t an easy decision to make, at the same time it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders,” he said. After living in the states for a few years, Brownlee moved to Vancouver to pursue his music career and to be closer to family. He played in bars and performed at open mic nights for a while, and recorded a demo that stuck the interest of his current manager, Mitch Merrett, which he met through the engineer who worked on his demo. “It was one of those moments where the stars just aligned, it was meeting the right people, and having the right songs and good music to catch their eye, I’ve jut been really lucky to be associated with the people I am right now,” Brownlee said. Brownlee’s first album was self-titled and released on Aug. 31, 2010. He played festivals and house concerts promoting the album, until he got back in the studio to write and record his current one. Brownlee’s songs are influenced by a variety of different subjects. “Well my inspiration comes from so many different places, it’s not like there’s just this one well of inspiration, I wish there was then I could continually go back to it. It’s drawing from everyday life, because if you do then people can relate to it so much more because I’m human just like everybody else and if we can speak on that same level then you can relate to your fans so much easier. It’s drawing from past events, and emotions, and loved ones, and lost ones and finding a creative way to send out that message,” he said. Brownlee is proud of his new album, Contributed photo but is looking forward to constantly learning more about himself as an artist, improving, and involving. “I think that a lot of artists and song writers will tell ya, they always want to improve and involve, make something different with a little bit of familiarity I guess is the key, and there’s definitely that in this album” said Brownlee. “I’m constantly learning that, you can never come to a plateau or a place where you know it all” Besides his new album, Brownlee says that fans may also look forward to a possible music video in the future.

Canadian blues artist tells tall tales of life on the high road By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN – Stealing the attention of southern Memphis blues fans, acquiring three prestigious awards, this year alone, and laying down a record in a week, this Canadian man is no stranger to musical success. Andersen just got off the Caribbean Blues Cruise when the Northeast News caught up with him. “It’s just like a floating blues cruise down the Caribbean. It’s a bit of a luxury,” says the bellow-toned gentleman. Before hitting the tropics Andersen played in Australia, he has been promoting his new CD, Coal Mining Blues. Now, he’s back doing a Canadian cross-country tour. Andersen has found himself playing for audiences around the world, but home is certainly where his heart is. “East coast of Canada is my favourite spot to play,” said the New Brunswick native. Thus, it is no surprise that his favourite song to perform, She Comes Down, has to do with the familiarities of living on the east coast. “It’s about professionals leaving on the road and having someone waiting at home,” he said. For him it’s from a musician stand point, but he said lots of people in eastern Canada can relate to leaving loved ones behind for work but knowing they will be there when they return. All his traveling eventually led him down south, the home of rhythm and blues, soul and jazz. In 2010 he earned his stripes by being the first Canadian to win the Memphis International Blues

Challenge. “There were a lot of surprises that the winner came from Canada, I guess they didn’t think blues went that far up north so it was really nice.” While some may not recognize Canada as a gem for blues, it recently hosted its 15 Annual Maples Blues Award in Toronto, where Andersen picked up three awards: Entertainer of the Year, Acoustic Act of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year. His accomplishments have earned him attention worldwide, but it was thanks to an uploaded YouTube video that caught the ears of the famous folk band, Old Crow Medicine Show. While one of the members of OCMS was sifting through YouTube covers of their acclaimed single Wagon Wheel they came across Andersen’s version. Impressed by what they heard, they gave Andersen a ring and asked if he wanted to open for them. Andersen accepted the offer Stubbyfingers.ca photo and the rest is history. Of all the places Andersen Matt Andersen, Canadian blues artist, will perform at has played it will be his first the North Peace Cultural Centre on Feb. 12. time in Fort St. John. On Feb. 12 he will take the stage at the North Peace Cultural Centre, stirring up tunes from his latest album. It is hard to believe that Andersen finished the 12-track record in a week, but he hands the applause to his back-up band. “We had a pretty strong team, that sped up the process a lot. It was just a band playing together, instead of separate rooms and coming back and me just singing the vocals over and over again,” said Andersen.
