The new $301.8 million Fort St. John hospital opened the doors today as of 6 a.m. Construction began back in June 2009 and over the past few years, more than 360 dedicated construction workers and contractors, along with approximately 20 local construction companies have helped to build the new facility. The hospital project was a public-private partnership between Northern Health and ISL Health. See page 5 for more info.

from across Canada the representatives will produce a Business Outlook Survey to be presented to Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of Canada. “We then put everything together and we have a good picture of what’s going to happen in Canada and then present that to the government,” Novin said, adding that the survey that will be presented in July gives an early reading of how the economy is going to perform over the next year. “This is a sample, and we can get all sorts of responses… fortunately it seems that the majority of businesses are trying to invest more and that’s a very good sign and really we need investments, you never lose by being more productive especially when you are in this province where you have the ingredients, all the commodities are here so you can really invest,” he said. Novin believes that the diversity in northeastern British Columbian industries including mining, manufacturing, oil and gas, forestry, tourism and agriculture puts residents in a good position for future growth and development. “The region is producing literally many base metals, we have pulp and wood products, and we have a lot of Freshwater Salmon, agriculture, mines. We are very very diversified so the best place really to be is this place,” Novin said. DAWSON CREEK- Owners from a variety of different industry businesses and secondary economy businesses will help to illustrate to government the financial development in the region through a series of interviews conducted last week. Many businesses in the area sat down with Dr. Farid Novin, a senior representative at the Bank of Canada’s regional office for British Columbia and the Yukon, to talk about how they feel about the economy, if their services are increasing at a greater rate or a slower rate, if they are at capacity, if their business is hiring and if they are investing. Novin also presented to Chamber of Commerce members in the area to answer any question and give them an idea of how the world economy is performing. Novin has worked for the Bank of Canada since 1999 and directs research and analysis on economic and financial developments in the region. BCAS adds paramedics to Peace region BCAS’ response to staffing shortages after a Hudson’s Hope woman died on Jun. 8 By Kyla Corpuz
HUDSON’S HOPE – BC Ambulance Service announced they are working towards additional coverage in Hudson’s Hope following the death of a woman on Jun. 8. There was no ambulance service in Hudson’s Hope at the time of the 911 call. It is likely the woman experienced a heart attack, said Hudson’s Hope Cpl. Darren Woroshelo, but that has yet to be confirmed by the BC Coroner. “When we arrived on scene shortly after getting the call … she had no pulse,” said Woroshelo. He added the husband and RCMP continued to give CPR until additional help arrived, but concluded that she was unresponsive. “Whether or not she had passed as her husband was making the 911-call, it’s hard to say. Had the ambulance been in town, would it have made a difference? I couldn’t speculate on that,” said Woroshelo. A week after the incident BCAS said two staff members will be moved from Prince George and stationed in Tumbler Ridge and an additional paramedic will be coming from Vancouver to provide coverage to the Fort St. John-Dawson Creek areas. “This incident indicates that we do not have adequate medical service in the district,” said Hudson’s Hope chief administering officer John Locher. According to BCAS a local first responder attended the scene providing CPR and an automated external defibrillator. A local off-duty paramedic arrived within 27 minutes, only two minutes longer than the average response time in Hudson’s Hope. “It took just about … an hour for the ambulance from Chetwynd to arrive,” said Locher. The ambulance originally stationed in Hudson’s Hope was sent to Tumbler Ridge. “That left us with one attendant with no vehicle with the appropriate equipment, so we are in a position with no ambulance and no physician,” Locher added. In his presentation at the Dawson Creek Chamber of Commerce breakfast on June 13, Novin outlined the recovery of the recession among major economies, unemployment rates in European countries, historically low inter-
est rates in central banks and how large deficits remain a problem for many countries. He says that Canada has been able to keep it’s deficit low in comparison to other countries because of the government’s decision in 2005 to make cut backs with fiscal policies and government expenditures; with the cut backs the government was able to reduce debt and re-stimulate the economy when the recession hit. Novin admits that there is some uncertainty in the European economy, but believes that with the right actions it can be fixed. He believes that Canada may feel a little impact through the banking systems if the situation in Greece spreads to other European countries. “The chance that it’s going to effect Canada is through the banking system, because banks in Spain are very much related to banks in France and Germany and our banks are in turn has a connection to the banks in France and Germany…In the worst-case scenario of course, if
these countries in Europe start to disintegrate and they are just going into a recession and China has slowed down then the consumer is going to suffer from that, but that’s a very low probability,” he said. Novin says that even in a worst-case scenario, the Canadian economy can perform well in comparison to other countries as long as we adopt the right policies. “We are still going to be one of the best performers in the global economy, but in terms of what we are seeing some slow downs and some stagnation it’s not going to be rosy but compared to what’s going to happen in Europe in the worst case scenario everybody would love to be here,” said Novin. “So these sorts of things are happening, it’s really bad, the situation is biting and we don’t see that…we are talking about growth, while they are talking about recession,” he said.

FORT ST. JOHN - As of 6 a.m. today, the new Fort St. John hospital opened its doors. The new facility replaces the original hospital that was built in the 1960s. The new two-storey hospital will be approximately 23,000 square metres in size with 55 acute-care beds, of which 85 per cent will be single patient rooms Highlights include an expanded emergency room and ambulatory care department, an intensive care unit, larger operating rooms, endoscopy suite, a birthing centre and significant academic space to support the University of Northern B.C.’s Northern Medical Program. This week, our senior liquor officials attended meetings in Quebec with their provincial counterparts where the direct shipment of wine was discussed. The meetings provided the first forum since Bill C-311 passed in the House of Commons where jurisdictions across the country could discuss the growing interest surrounding ecommerce and the direct shipment of wine. Our government recognizes direct sales are important to our wine industry, and we are prepared to champion further changes and reforms. That being said, it is also important for people to understand this is a very complicated issue, which will require the co-operation of other provinces and territories. Contrary to some public reports, Bill C-311 does not allow for the direct sale of liquor. To allow this to happen, we need the co-operation and support of other provinces because Bill C-311 simply clarifies a province’s right to set limits to the quantity that can be imported and in what manner. It’s worth noting that debate by federal MPs in the House of Commons also clearly articulated that the purpose of Bill C-311 is to remove restrictions overseen by Ottawa and allow provinces to set policy that they feel is appropriate. Lawmakers in Ottawa have recognized that liquor importation should be a provincial responsibility and each jurisdiction should be free to set their own policies. On June 7, 2012, we set our personal limits for the importation of tax-free liquor into British Columbia. This move aligns our rules with Ontario, Nova Scotia and the

Yukon, which are among the highest in Canada. It was a step forward and much more work will be required together with other provinces and territories to en-
sure we create a more open, level and competitive playing field for B.C.’s wine industry. Once again, I want to assure your readers that work has begun in earnest.
RCMP Enforce New Motorcycle Laws in the Peace Region
Every year with the arrival of spring, motorcyclists make their come back onto Peace Region roads. Although this year’s riding season is well underway, the Peace Region RCMP would like to remind the public to use extra caution on the roads. Motorcycle fatalities continue to be of serious concern in BC. According to provincial data, motorcycles make up about 3% of insured vehicles yet they make up approximately 10% of road fatalities. On average, 42 riders are killed and 2,200 crashes involving motorcycles occur on BC roads every year. Recently, the Provincial Government has made amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act in an effort to improve motorcycle safety in BC. NEW Motorcycle Safety Laws (Helmet and Seating): Starting June 1, 2012, motorcycle riders and passengers are required to wear Snell, ECE or DOT compliant helmets. For a one month period starting June
1, police across the province will help ensure a smooth transition to the new laws by carrying out an educational enforcement strategy. If you are caught without a proper helmet, police, whenever possible, will ensure you have safe alternative transportation rather than issuing a ticket. Full enforcement will begin July 1, 2012. In addition to improved helmet laws, new seating laws will require motorcycle riders to keep their feet placed on the foot pegs or floorboards or be seated in a sidecar. Violation of seating requirements will be treated as stunt riding and will result in motorcycle impoundment and fines. Impoundment is mandatory and is in effect as of June 1, 2012. Safety Tips and Best Practices: - Wear an approved helmet. DOT, Snell or ECE approved helmets are now law in BC. Ensure you display the proper label in order to avoid being checked by police. - Look for an expiry date and update your helmet if necessary.
- Always carry out a visual inspection of the motorcycle (Tires, oil levels, brakes, gas, etc) - Wear highly visible protective gear including jacket, pants, gloves and riding boots. Choose clothing that has fluorescent material and reflective striping. - Make sure all riders are properly seated and can reach the foot pegs, this is now the law in BC. - Double your awareness, particularly at intersections. Visual contact with all other road users is a must and remains a highly effective way to avoid collisions. More collisions occur at intersections than anywhere else. - Always respect speed limits, adjust your speed for the conditions and when approaching road curves in order to negotiate them properly. Motorcycle safety starts with the rider and flows through everyone on our roads. Police have a duty to protect the public, including violators of traffic or Criminal laws that put themselves and others at risk.

Dawson Creek Literacy Now: Keep Kids Reading in the Teen Years
By Michele Mobley ~ Literacy Outreach Coordinator It can sometimes become a challenge to keep kids reading into their teen years. The trick is to find a topic that is interesting to them. Fiction or non-fiction, there is bound to be something for everyone. Comic books, graphic novels or fantasy might appeal to teen boys; while comedy, romance or a more dramatic series may be more inviting
to teen girls. Whether ghosts a ghouls come packaged in a fanciful tale or in eye-witness accounts, most people (young and old) love a good story from ‘the other side’. Encouraging teens to read for pleasure can provide them with a place to ‘escape’. The opportunities that books allow teens are truly endless, so let a book take them away to another world, or teach them how to bake the perfect

June is Electronics Recycling Awareness Month for NEAT By Tammy Hrab - NEAT FORT ST. JOHN – NEAT is continuing to focus in the different stewardship services available to the residents of British Columbia. A steward is given the responsibility of providing options of disposal for products at end of life. June is Electronics month. Thanks to Encorp, British Columbians have access to the Return-It Electronics Program. Computers and their accessories to not need to be thrown away. They can be taken to an Encorp collection facility where they are packaged and sent for recycling. Electronics contain various hazardous materials that we do not want contaminating the environment. The Peace River region is lucky to have access to 3 collection facilities in our area. You can choose from Eco-Depot in Fort St. John, DC Recycling in Dawson Creek, and Chetwynd Lions Recycling in Chetwynd. The question that usually comes up is,
“What can I recycle?” This program includes desktop computers, laptop computers, monitors, desktop printers, desktop scanners, desktop fax machines, and all peripherals. Those are the items that you may have already known. The items you may not have known are personal and portable, audio and video, recording and playback devices. That is the long way of saying radios, stereos, cameras, video players, and music players. This is actually a long list of items that should be recycled. If you think about it, throwing these items in the garbage is a waste in more than one way. Because these items have an environmental handling fee (EHF) attached to them at the time they are purchased, you have already paid for the recycling service. By not using the service, you are throwing your money away too. Just something to think about. Recycle those electronics and waste nothing.

FORT ST. JOHN – After one family lost nearly everything to a house fire, a family friend and North Peace Secondary School are helping to rebuild some of the pieces. The fire took the home of NPSS graduating student Brooke Copeland, where most of her family’s belongings were destroyed. “The tragedy is one difficult in any time but it is compounded by how close this event occurred to Brooke’s graduation,” reads a letter by NPSS vice principal Craig Brownlee. The family friend, who asked not to be named, started the initiative to raise donations for the soon-to-be graduate. “I went through two fires myself when I was younger, and I thought it would be a good idea to try and help these folks out,” she said, adding the money will be used to buy things for Brooke’s graduation that are not “easily replaceable”. “To give her a better graduation, like help her out with accessories, things that she needs. Most kids are going to bring a camera … to graduation for their pictures, so possibly get her a camera and try and replace her graduation ring that she lost in the fire,” she said. “That’s what I’m trying to work towards.” While the family deals with the repercussions of the incident, their friend said, “They’re very appreciated for it, they’re happy that I’m doing it for Brooke.” NPSS is also supportive of the fundraiser. “Friends of her family are looking to gain any donations that help Brooke enjoy a memorable graduation at this time,” states Brownlee. Donations can be dropped of at NPSS or can be arranged for pick up by Rhonda Gray at 250787-6811. On Jun. 8 at approximately 4 a.m. the Copeland residence in Rose Prairie was engulfed in flames. According to police nobody was in the house at the time of the fire, and the inferno already spread throughout the house by the time Fort St. John RCMP arrived. The house was located outside fire protection area, so there was no fire department in attendance. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but according to police it appears not to be suspicious.

Dawson Creek RCMP to ride in annual charity bike tour By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- Two members of the City’s RCMP detachment have volunteered to ride in this year’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North charity bike ride. Const. Greg Hall and Cpl. James Rutledge will cycle in the tour’s 15th annual ride traveling over 850 km in seven days from Prince George to Prince Rupert, starting on Sept. 8 and finishing on the 21st. Hall and Rutledge will just be two of the 24 member team trying to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Last year’s D.C. detachment rider, Const. Rachel Geenes raised approximately $46,000 in the D.C., Pouce Coupe and surrounding communities. “It’s a lofty goal but I think that the community will rally around that and come together,” said Rutledge, hoping to meet or exceed Geenes fundraising efforts. Together all four Cops for Cancer bike tours in the province including Tour de Coast, Tour de North, Tour de Rock and Tour de Valley raised approximately $2.5 million for the cause. The money donated goes towards pediatric cancer research, caring support services and Camp Goodtimes, the medically supervised camp in Abbotsford for children and families battling cancer. Besides a triathlon that Rutledge took part in, neither officers has any experience in long distance biking and both men admit to letting their physical fitness slip while working in the serious crimes unit for the last three month. As apart of their preparation regiment, they both ride anywhere from 20 km to 40 km almost on a daily basis. During the tour they will be riding anywhere from 100 km to150 km daily for four to five hours a day. Each year the route alternates between Prince George and Prince Rupert traveling east to west and Fort St. John to Williams Lake traveling north to south. Along the ride the cops will be stopping into communities
to talk about the cause. “It’s going to be a grueling, grueling week and I think that’s going to be the challenge really, the rest of it I think is just going to be a fantastic opportunity...Part of it is the experience and the other is the huge physical demand but it allows us to visit communities all the way from Prince George to Prince Rupert and along with the physical demand we get to meet with the public we get to meet with schools we get to do talks and lots of fun opportunities with the community,” Hall said. “Not only are we helping by raising funds for pediatric cancer and cancer research and assisting families we’re also meeting with the people and the communities and spreading the good will of cops for cancer and giving the opportunity for the community to meet another side of the RCMP,” he adds. Both men have lost an aunt to cancer and have watched friends struggling with the disease, and will ride in their memories. “I know that since that time friends, family, several of my friends have battled with it and survived it and I’m just watching them struggle and the courage that they have has really motivated me to help this cause and obviously it’s one of those things that effects so many people and anything that I can do to help out is just a bonus for me,” said Hall on why he wanted to take part. “For me, the causes are right it has the potential to effect everybody and anybody and therefore as a community I think rallying together with corporate support and volunteers to make this a whole community event is something special and a unique opportunity,” Rutledge said. In an effort to raise money Hall and Rutledge, along with other detachment members, are organizing three events the community can take part in. The first one will be held on July 1 at the Canada Day celebrations in Pouce
Coupe, community members are invited to attempt to dunk their favourite (or least favourite) member of the RCMP at the dunk tank while wearing vision impairment goggles. Small gifts at this event donated by Dawson Creek Canadian Tire and the Lakeview Credit Union will be awarded to those who contribute to Cops for Cancer. They will also be hosting the 2nd Annual Cops for Cancer Jail n Bail on July 25 with help
from the D.C. Lakeview Credit Union. Local businesses can submit an application form to have their bosses or their co-workers arrested for the day, the arrestees are then to raise a minimum bail of $300 or whatever amount their peers have set for them. Last year one individual raised $13,000 to get out of ‘jail’. The credit union will also be hosting a BBQ that day to raise extra funds. Continued on Page 17.

FORT ST. JOHN – Deciding on a career in high school isn’t always the easiest task. To help students excel and guide them towards a career path is a program called Shad Valley. “Our mission is to provide a transformational experience to unleash the innovative potential of exceptional youth,” said Mary Dever, Shad Valley’s national director of development. “So we’ve got kind of a core base of science, technology, engineering, math and entrepreneurship.” Shad Valley is a non-profit organization that started in 1980 in Waterloo, Ont. “We’re trying to open minds and broaden perspectives and help them get a really good sense of what they might like to pursue in university and in their careers,” said Dever. There are 539 students across Canada, some of whom are international, that will attend one of 10 prestigious post-secondary schools in North America for a four-week excursion. Four of the 539 students chosen to participate in the program are from North Peace Secondary School. After completing a long application process, Erin Robertson and Mandy Wuth, Grade 11 and Gina Clark and Alyssa Sampson, Grade 12 were selected into the program. Clark and Sampson were unaware of the program until being nominated by one of their teachers. But Wuth has been eyeing this opportunity since last year; however the cost to attend was her drawback. It wasn’t until some of her peers, who went in previous years, encouraged her to apply. “They said, ‘It’s such a great program; you should apply.’ So I did, and what I’m hoping to gain out of it is more knowledge and a chance to learn more and meet with other people who like learning too.” The cost to attend is $7,000 and students are subsidized $3,500 through the government. To make up the rest, Sampson applied for bursaries while Clark and Robertson gained sponsorships through local companies, and Wuth did both. Wuth and Clark said North Peace Credit Union was a big help, as well as MNP, Trojan Safety, Northern Metalic and others. At a young age, they all agree that they’re not certain where the future lies, but are highly optimistic the program will open doors to achieve big dreams. “…I have no idea what I want to do with my life, like I know I’m interested in the sciences … but hopefully this will give me a taste of different things,” said Robertson. “To say you’re

This year’s role models will be the program’s last, as the program has lost federal funding and cannot operate without it. “It’s beneficial to Aboriginal youth, it’s highlighting Aboriginals that have done some accomplishing or have done some very interesting stuff that most aboriginal people wouldn’t know existed or would have thought that they’re own people can’t do…it’s just time for their own people to realize they can grow out of it and actually be who ever they want instead of following stereotypes given to them,” Jones said.

The role model program was created in 2004 and has recognized 96 Aboriginal youth aged 13-30 whose characters have shown innovation, achievement and leadership. “Each of these role models is uniquely worthy of this accomplishment. These twelve role models are great ambassadors of not only NARMP and NAHO, but First Nations, Inuit and Métis. This program has been a tremendous success over the years due to youth like these,” said Simon Brascoupe, NAHO’s acting CEO. Some of Jones’ achievements include being enrolled into Northern Alberta’s Institute of Technology in Edmonton working to complete his Bachelor of Business Administration and Marketing and hoping to enter a career in corporate marketing. He was also involved in the “Find Your Passion in Sport” poster series by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, aimed at getting youth involved in sports and living health and active lifestyles. Jones was also a flame attendant for 30 days while the Olympic flame was being carries across Canada. He also plays on NAIT’s varsity curling team and volunteers his time coaching a curling team of 16-17 year old girls; he also volunteered his time coaching soccer while he was in Dawson Creek. Each of the students will be spend the month of July at a different post-secondary school, learning and meeting with like-minded people. “We’re also trying to help them experience the excitement of breakthrough results in a short period of time when you’re surrounded by a bunch of people who want to achieve just as much as you do,” said Dever.” Wuth will be at Carleton University, Sampson at Dalhousie University, Robertson at McMaster University, and Clark will venture her career and post secondary options at the University of Waterloo. Shad Valley is aimed at Grade 10 to 12 students who excel in different parts of life. “It’s a very competitive application process. We get hundreds and hundreds of applications all across the country and we ask them to show us not only their academic achievement but their initiative, drive and creativity, and interpersonal skills.”

Annual BBQ promotes accessibility, awareness, action By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- June 12 the Dawson Creek Society for Community Living and the City of Dawson Creek held their annual Access Awareness BBQ in Kin Park beside the outdoor senior’s fitness centre to raise awareness about community accessibility. “It’s about access for all British Columbians everybody should be apart of the community and celebrating that there is an awareness that people of all ages and abilities have something to contribute,” said Marla Reed, executive director for the D.C. Society for Community Living. All members of the community were invited to attend the free BBQ; Reed says that a BBQ was chosen as the event to raise awareness because it attracts a lot of people. “Food brings people together. People, many friendships are built around food, the Canadian culture is based on food, and food is good fellowship and a good way of getting to know each other and it equals the playing field,” she said. Besides the opportunity to enjoy a free meal, it was also an opportunity for the community to celebrate and educate themselves about all types of accessibility and accessibility issues in the city. “Each year it’s grown and we’re getting more people and more people asking about what it is, so that’s the educational piece and the awareness piece is to see all members of the community out and about celebrating, it’s not just people with disabilities, it’s seniors, low-income families, moms with strollers. Accessibility is not just physical accessibility, accessibility is attitudinal, societal, environmental, it’s more then just a physical thing,” Reed said. The D.C. Society for Community Living helps to support adults to live an independent and dignified life. Reed hopes that attendees at the BBQ walked away with the view that everybody in the community has something to contribute and to not judge someone by the outside but what’s on the inside. Tammy Walter is a self-advocate who used to use the society’s services but now is in their access program, cleaning and
visiting with seniors twice a week and making deliveries when needed. “I’ve really enjoyed it. It gets me out in the community, I get to know people, make friends with them, it’s really awesome… they make it easier for me to go out in the community and interact better with others, and I think it works out well for us, because some of us, we don’t have skills and they help us get the skills we need,” Walter said. To address accessibility issues in the city, the society and the city have partnered to create a committee in a provincial initiative called Measuring Up The North. The committee applies for grants for projects aiming to increase accessibility in the city. Building the senior’s outdoor fitness centre was one initiative completed by the committee as well as paving approaches to some bus stops and circulating a public survey about the barriers to access. Results of the 2010 survey indicated uneven sidewalks, unnecessary curbs, heavy doors, lack of elevators, lack of wheelchair accessible washrooms, poor enforcement of public bylaws, able bodied people parking in handicapped parking spaces, poor lighting in parks and a long list of many other potential problems as accessibility issues in the city. The committee continues to work on projects that are of a high priority as indicated by the results of the survey. “Just different projects that effect people with varying abilities and just try to improve that gap... we look at ways that we can increase accessibility and just look at options so that people with varying abilities can participate in the community and can be combined with community events,” said Duncan Redfearn, deputy director of community services with the city. Though the committee still has many more projects ahead of them, Reed says accessibility in the city has definitely improved. “I think it’s come along way in the last few years... The committee was able to do the seniors park over there with the access grant, and that was one of the things that we did. We also got money for the retrofit of Sudaten Hall, and made it more accessible for all people, so there’s a couple of projects that we’ve done,” she said.

Though Hall and Rutledge will be the ones riding, they realize that they couldn’t make this happen without the support of their RCMP peers and community volunteers. “It couldn’t happen without the dedication and volunteer work from all of the members

in the detachment to make our fundraising events possible and making the awareness for the campaign possible but above and beyond that it really reaches out into the community... This is more then an RCMP event this is really a community fundraiser,” said Hall. “We were talking yesterday about how quickly we realized that although we are the two that are riding, we are a very small percentage of why this has been successful, it really is the community that makes this a success and we can’t thank them enough for the support that we’ve already received and this is a detachment, the detachment comes together every year for this and dedicates there time as well, it’s a great opportunity that’s a lot of fun,” Rutledge said. S.P. road improvements announced By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- The next project in the province’s $54 million highway improvements initiative in the South Peace will be Stewart Lake Road. The $5.4 million project will help to improve the side road off of the John Hart Highway leading to the Shell plant, approximately 50 km west of Dawson Creek. The improvements to the approximately 9.8 km of road include seal-coating as well as widening and strengthening the road with geogrid and gravel. The project aims to limit the amount of dust on the road with the increased volume of traffic. “This is a busy road and the traffic volumes over the past few years have increased significantly. Having a safe and efficient road network is important to both residents and industry users who travel Stewart Lake Road daily, so these improvements were a priority on our South Peace highways program this year,” said South Peace MLA and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Blair Lekstrom in the press release. 3 km between kilometre 2.5 and 5.5 will also be aligned to make the road shorter and safer. “We’re going to widen it anyway and the cost of widening that particular portion of road would be about the cost of straightening it, there’s a big round corner out there and so their shortening it to make it straighter, it’s safer,” said Willie Dobbin, president of Wiltech Developments, the successful bidder for the contract. Dobbin and his staff will also replace the current culvert with a larger one crossing Sunset Creek to allow for the improvement in stream flow and fish passage. The project is expected to be finished by March and there will be a detour for residents and Shell employees while construction is underway. Though Dobbin admits that long hours and being away from their headquarters in Kelowna, he is excited to get the contract. “We’re just happy to have the work,” Dobbin said. DL#5247

Community is blown away on Global Wind Day By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- On June 16 the Peace Energy Cooperative and community members celebrated Global Wind Day. This is the first year that the cooperative, dedicated to the adoption of renewable energy sources, has participated. “It’s a relatively new event, regardless, 2009 is not that long ago for the event and this year just seemed to be a good year. We’re starting a new project selling wind turbines and we wanted to be able to promote that along with this kind of general educating any residents of the Peace Region about wind energy…that has been incredibly important to this region and it’s a booming sector right now,” said Brigitte Schilds, executive director of the cooperative. Celebrated by most of the 40 countries involved on June 15, there are more then 230 events held worldwide. Wind Day was started in Europe in 2007 and went global in 2009, coordinated by the European Wind Energy Association and the Global Wind Energy Council. A young designer with an eye for classy wear, Bourgeau is also passionate about catering to the graduating clientele. “I am absolutely in love with working with the grad gowns,” she said. Her show featured four brightly coloured grad gowns with a fitted bodice and mermaidlike tails, made of layered tulle. From the runway to local retail shops, Bourgeau anticipates her line, Redkarr, will continue to grow. Redkarr is currently featured at Scoop Clothing on 100 Avenue. “It’s really awesome, and [they] have been an absolutely amazing support and always encourages me to work as far as I can with my line. They are really interested in helping me as a young woman in the community.” With the birth of her new son, Bourgeau has also been inspired to tackle a baby line, which is featured at Bees Kneez Baby Boutique in Fort St. John. At an age where most 20-year-olds are still figuring out what they want to pursue, the upbeat brunette is already setting her eyes on the future of Redkarr. “My optimal is that I want to own a chain of stores and shops and I’m hoping that by the time I hit the five year mark I’ll have my own store and have more stores selling my clothes and in 10 years I would like to open my own shop internationally.” The local designer said she would like to continue to make custom clothes and plans to stray away from mass-produced designs. “I want women to feel like they’re the only ones wearing that,” she said. “Each collection is going to be more limited and more tailored and I always wanna have that feel that it’s very unique no matter how big it [Redkarr] gets or how far it reaches.” Bourgeau graduated a year earlier than her peers in high school to get a head start in pursuing her dream as a fashion designer. Instead of enrolling into fashion school she took on an apprenticeship with a local seamstress. Social work professionals from throughout the Peace Region gathered on May 3 for a joint workshop designed to bring together members of the agencies and provide them with an opportunity for professional development. Northern Lights College and the University of Northern British Columbia partnered for the event to raise the profiles of their respective institutions as providers of high quality professional training for social workers in the region. Sixty-five attendees participated in the interactive workshop that also explored how issues such as physical abuse, substance abuse, and mental illness impacts women’s lives and examined how these issues intersect to create risks to women’s health and safety and barriers to accessibility of service.

A band called Acres of Lions put on a lively set for its Dease Lake audience on May 15 as part of the provincial government’s Jobfest 2012.ca tour. Two Dease Lake employment and training fairs were attended by Northern Lights College’s recruitment team last month. The Tahltan Central Council hosted its second annual job fair on May 11 in the gymnasium of the Dease Lake elementary and secondary school.
The Northern Lights College band kicked into action at the Fort St. John Campus Trades and Apprenticeship department’s annual barbecue that took place May 25. Rocking good music and the sunny day was enjoyed by all. This year’s event was hosted to benefit the Canadian Cancer Society’s ‘Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer’ and a ball hockey tournament was

Many thrived in Canada but others suffered abuse, poor working conditions, and loneliness. 2010 was designated as the Year of the British Home Child. Three quilts were made in Canada with squares submitted by descendents of these British Home Children. This quilt comes to us from Alberta and was lovingly put together by Hazel Perrier, a descendent of British Home Children. It depicts the experiences of these children across the country. He said there might be faults to the program if it isn’t. “But I think the weakness in the air monitoring and the 18-month time frame, as the first phase report points out, is that people believe they are already experiencing health impacts, and that the sooner the government can take to address those concerns the better. “If the air monitoring shows that the emissions have health impacts, they would then move to the regulation and implementation phase and not wait until studies are done,” said Simpson. Hardy Friedrich, Oil and Gas Commission communications manager, said that this is not the only case in which health issues would be taken into consideration and investigation, but every case that comes across the OGC.
