DAWSON CREEK - Some technologies have become so sophisticated, that users are barely aware of more than the basic functions. This makes users of those technologies vulnerable to those that would take advantage. Last week the Dawson Creek RCMP received a report from a local resident of a possible computer scam. The person received a fraudulent call from the “Window’s Centre” instructing them to log on to their home computer and was then navigated though a series of websites, one of which is suspected to have installed a virus. The fraudster then requested $100 payment in cheque or money order to renew the computer’s warranty and fix the problem, warning that if the problem goes unfixed the computer will crash. The victim suspected it was a scam and then hung up. Sgt. Scott West of the Dawson Creek RCMP suspects that this is not the only recent case of computer fraud. “Often what we see is the tip of the iceberg. Don’t be embarrassed to report any type of crime. You aren’t the only one, somebody else out there is a victim too,” West said. Jeff Coleman, field repair technician at the Three Monkeys Intelligent Systems, has also seen a rise in this activity. “A lot of people have been complaining about it. If anybody calls them saying they’re Microsoft or any other big company like eBay or Pay Pal, their security doesn’t contact the customer, even by e-mail and if they do they will provide a secure link,” Coleman says. Secure sites will have https in the address instead of http. Coleman also suggests keeping anti-virus software up to date, and running virus scans at least once a week. He also cautions against music sharing sites which often contain harmful files that once downloaded, may have the ability to change the security settings on your computer. The RCMP suggest following these tips to keep your computer protected: • Use different passwords and usernames for different accounts with a combination of letters and numbers • Activate your firewall • Use anti-virus software • Install and update anti-spyware software • Keep your system current • Make back ups of important files • Protect your wireless network • Delete e-mails from unknown/suspicious senders • Exercise caution when giving out personal information online • Call local police if you suspect cyber-crime

Local will go in front of council to propose a dog park By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN - Amanda Wilms is preparing a proposal to city council to give canines in Fort St. John a play park of their own. Wilms said after speaking with a city councillor she was told there hasn’t been a proposal to the city for a dog park. The idea for a dog park in the city has been floating around for quite some time now. “It’s been three weeks that I’ve been looking into it,” said Wilms, adding that since then she has been phoning other cities to ask what stages they went through to build a dog park, she

also confirmed a time to address the idea to city council. Ears have perked since the news spread about Wilms’ idea of a dog park. “Oh wow, I can’t believe how many people support it, I’ve heard others say that they have had plans to suggest a dog park,” said Wilms. Her motivation to spearhead the project came after tirelessly being howled at by others during walks at Fish Creek Trail with her dog Mickey, a cross breed of an American bulldog and mastiff, who she walks off leash for safety reasons. A dog park would be helpful for dogs to socialize, a pertinent skill that canines need in order to be a good member of the public, said Wilms. She added most dogs develop a vicious personality if they aren’t social with other dogs and people. “It’s not in them to be aggressive, it’s what they learn,” believes Wilms. Wilms has compiled a list of standard rules for a dog park that can be viewed on a website she created: fortsaintjohndogpark.
weebly.com. One of the expectations is that a six-foot fence would enclose the area and owners will be expected to clean up after their dog’s feces. She created the page to engage members of the public to input their ideas on thoughts about a park and it’s location. “I want people to go on the blog and say, ‘I don’t want it here’,” said Wilms, so the community can collectively come up with an appropriate site, which council has encouraged her to add to the proposal. According to Wilms, a dog park would promote responsible dog ownership and allow dogs to act on their instinctive: interact with other dogs and people. Wilms doesn’t call herself a dog expert, but she does own two, trained, two-year-old dogs, Mickey and Mallory who is a Presa Canario, both dogs resemble features of a bullmastiff. She hopes to see fellow dog owners at the city council meeting on Sept. 12.
Criticism follows BC Hydro Review By Kyla Corpuz
Black, president of COPE, four days after the BC Hydro Review was issued, he accused the deputy ministers for providing inaccurate information. “You chose to undertake a blatantly superficial analysis,” he wrote. Black’s conclusion that the information was misrepresented stems from his conspiracy that they used statistics from the fiscal year 2005/06 to show the increase in labour work force. He suggests 2006 was “the multi-decade nadir of employment at the Crown corporation,” when 1,800 employees were removed from payroll. “BC Hydro’s work-force by 2006 was at its lowest level in well over a decade,” he added. He questioned why a year like 2004 or 2007 wasn’t used. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Mines said statistics from 2006 were gathered because it is a standard practice to use information from a five-year interval. From 2006 to 2010 employment skyrocketed by 41 per cent. “[BC Hydro] acknowledged this expansion wasn’t always monitored and controlled,” according to deputy minister Cheryl Wenezenki-Yolland. 10267 West Bypass, Fort St. John, BC Despite Black’s request for a revised report, the spokesperson for the ministry said that Phone: 250-787-8888 it was confident in it’s panel’s Fax: 250-787-8887 review. “We stand behind the work
The BC Hydro Review is being called “deeply flawed” and “most hypocritical,” by an employee union and the BC Federation of Labour. The review, compiled by three deputy ministers, is being urged by the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union to see some revisions. In a letter written by David

And we’ll change the world...
Words of Opinion by Brent Hodson Monday was a sad day for Canadian politics and for all Canadians. At 61, Jack Layton passed away and ended his battle with cancer. Before his death, he led his party to unprecedented new high of 103 seats in the House of Commons making them the official opposition. This made Layton the most successful leader electorally in the party’s history in terms of seats won. Before his death, Layton wrote a letter to all Canadians. In his words he says that: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world’s environment. We can restore our good name in the world. All of Canada will remember Jack Layton not only for his politics, but also his stride in life. During the last election, he was battling cancer, a hip replacement and was using a cane. His cane became a lightning rod as the party’s support grew and grew. No matter what your beliefs are in politics, Layton has to be admired for his achievements in politics and in life. Ending his letter, he left a few words of advice... My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.
What is the line between fashion that is appropriate and inappropriate CNN, The NY Daily News, ABC and the Daily Mail quickly picked up the story about a ‘loungerie’ line for girls aged four to 12. Jour après Lunes has been dubbed by news headlines as “another fashion controversy.” The French fashion company, who recently debuted their latest collection, By Kyla Corpuz Créateur Loungerie Enfant, is designed by Sophie Morin and has quickly gained a rough reputation, being criticized for the indecency of “sexualizing” young girls. Before continuing, I think it’s pertinent to make clear that, in France lingerie means the entire field of underwear, including men, women and children; and ‘loungerie’, in Morin’s designs, is the make of underwear and training bras with lingerie material. Morin is originally a lingerie designer for women and, in an exclusive letter to Fashionista.com, she wrote, “At no point: did Jours après Lunes meet any criticism, neither from other professionals in fashion, nor tradeshows organizers, nor from buyers or clients.” Until that is, Fashionista.com broke the news of the ‘loungerie’ line in an article on their online fashion magazine.
On the Jour après Lunes site some of the young girls are posed in two-piece triangle training bras, minimal makeup and hair big enough to hold a beehive. Little girls should “lounge” in a pajama set with their favourite cartoon character not a silk two-piece. Little girls should advertise sleepwear without make-up on hugging a teddy bear, fully clothed. In Morin’s response letter, she said her line was designed “as a first brassiere for girls and even young women who aren’t looking for real support, since these don’t have underwire.” Which is fine, at some point girls will need that type of undergarment, but what I think causes the uproar, for me at least, is not so much the product — but the portrayal of the product. It’s understandable that girls at the age of 10 to 12 will need to buy training bras, and Morin has come up with designs that she sees fitting for them. However, is it necessary to photograph children in it; wouldn’t it be more appropriate to simply photograph the pieces? Morin also noted that her line has successfully been on the market for the past two years, with the exception that the children’s line is not sold in the United States. So maybe the two continents are just on completely different fashion hemispheres. But it seems that this is normal for the French culture as headlines smeared across newspapers earlier this year concerning a photo shoot in French Vogue of a 10-year-old
model dressed in a skintight dress and leopard print heels, posing like a young Lolita. Morin also noted her ‘loungerie’ line is not the first and that there are others: “The transgenerational mother/ daughter aspect of my brand doesn’t offer anything new and is identical to what lots of ready to wear brands offer” — well, I guess it’s just unfortunate that hers caught the eyes of curious fashion writers, questioning the age-appropriateness of it. But who wouldn’t raise a slight eyebrow to photos of young girls with big hair, lipstick and lingerie-like pieces, a photo shoot you’d expect to see in a grown-woman’s fashion magazine with grown women modeling it? Morin continued to defend her label stating, “I’d like to specify that the articles in which they appeared were taken out of their context and were laid out to imply a sexy dimension that didn’t originally exist.” The Facebook page for the children’s line has gathered more “haters” than “likes.” Many have condemned the brand for being “disgusting” and “shameful.” Those who begged to differ, which were all women, called it “tasteful;” one said she would buy it for her own daughters and another user said she was considering making a line similar to Morin’s. As for me, I think it’s less than tasteful, a little girl marketing anything as revealing as something her mother would wear to bed is over-the-top. Maybe I’m being old fashioned, but at the end of the day morals should never go out of fashion.

Congratulations Peter MacKay Pages from the Beatton journals - August 1911 This letter was provided to us by Brian Ruddell for publishing.
Dear Peter Mac Kay: It is with great pleasure that I am able to write this letter of “Congratulations to you for restoring our Navy and Air Force’s full and proper Royal Heritage Name.” I am very proud of you and your staff. I wish this day could have come sooner as my father would have been beside himself with joy. As you may have guessed, he was a R.C.A.F. Sargent air frame mechanic and hydraulic specialist. As having proud farmer values he would not even watch Royal Canadian Air Farce as it hurt him so much to have the R.C.A.F. name dirtied weekly. I have been a proud volunteer search and rescue spotter since 1972. I have also been a proud volunteer and member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, Canadian Conservatives and the BC Conservatives for equally as long in most cases. My mother was a war bride from North England and my eldest sister was born in England. All of our siblings are very proud of Canada, Great Britain, the British Empire and the Royal Family. We thank you dearly for upholding these traditions and royal names. Yours Truly Brian H. Ruddell, Fort St. John, B.C.

Dwayne Hart, vice president of fianance and administration, looks out onto the piece of land behind the fence where B.C.’s first-ever simulated oil rig will be erected.
The college pumps out info on B.C’s first simulated oil rig By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN - The public was invited to an information session to learn about the full-size triple cantilever oil rig that will make it’s new home at the Northern Lights College. The oil rig is a simulated instrument that will be used strictly for learning purposes at the college. It will stand permanently erected at 120 feet as part of the simulated well site, where a mobile rig is currently operated from, along 120 Avenue. Two fences will wrap around it for extra security, the one closest to the rig will stand 12 feet with razed barb wire, to ensure safety at all times. The rig will be powered by diesel energy to emit sound as little as 90 decibels, the equivalent of a lawn mower. “Noise for the neighbours is not going to be that noticeable,” said Dwayne Hart, vice president of finance and administration at Northern Lights.
The rig will have an enclosed drilling hole reaching 200 metres into the ground, meaning there will be no environmental impact. Extra lights will be installed around the simulated well site and will all face towards the college so neighbouring houses will not be disturbed, said Hart. In addition, lights will be out after class hours, in an effort to be an “environmentally-sound” college. Nabors Canada and Shell Canada donated the retired oil rig to the college earlier this year. Its assessed price was $6 million, and its arrival is expected to be a milestone at the college. “This is not a new vision, this vision has been around for the past ten years,” said Hart. For the first time, students learning how to operate this type of machinery will be given the hands-on experience needed, instead of merely a textbook. “You’ll be safe on your very first shift and you’ll know how to operate,” said Hart. With 63 per cent of natural resources coming from around
the Peace region, the college found it crucial to have a firstclass training facility. The simulated oil rig is the first in B.C., and the college has gained the reputation as B.C.’s oil and gas training centre in the province. The rig is anticipated to go up this fall. An additional $1 million is expected for labour costs and the overall set-up of the rig. Though this session was intended to inform the public, there were no local residents that showed up, among the attendees were city councillors Larry Evans and Don Irwin. “Now they can come to school and learn how to be a rough neck...they’re concentrating around the rig and the activity around it — and I think that’s great. But somewhere along the way I’d like to see a school that teaches how to move the heavy equipment,” said Evans. However, Brad Lyon, communication manager at Northern Lights said information pamphlets were given out to residents of proximity to the college.

Tupper celebrates 5th annual Corn Roast and Music Festival By Jill Earl TUPPER – Country western fans found their way to Tupper last weekend to take part in the sounds, sights, and tastes of the fifth annual Corn Roast and Music Festival. Hosted by the Tupper Community Club at the Tupper Hall, followers of country western music enjoyed the line up of 68 musical acts throughout the entire weekend, 24 on Friday and Saturday, and 20 on Sunday. Along with the copious amounts of corn served on Saturday, the club also served a large variety of other items such as perogies and kabasa, chili, hamburger soup, cheesecake, pies, and ice cream as well as the usual popular items. A pancake breakfast was also served on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Turnout numbers are not official yet, but last year 104 RVs filled the hall’s parking lot to enjoy the music. People came from Edmonton, Prince George, Topley, Quesnel, Vanderhoof, and Kelowna to take part in the festivities. Pat Buller, who has been president of the Tupper Community Club for 13 years starts
preparations for this event at least a month before hand. The festival is the hall’s biggest annual event, Buller says that people know it always happens on the third weekend in August and mark their calendars. “The turnout has been excellent every year, excellent,” Buller said. What’s more remarkable then the turnout is the fact that it is all put on by volunteers. Organizers, cooks, cashiers - not even the bands- are paid. Some volunteers are even from out of town returning favors from when Tupper has lent it’s volunteers elsewhere. “Here it’s different, everyone pitches in and helps. We’ve had excellent help, everyone has been so helpful, and it will be like this next year as well,” Buller said. “It’s our love for music and what it does to the people who listen and enjoy it,” says Earl Leer, one of the musicians on why he chose to perform. The community club doesn’t charge either; not to enter, not to park. They only make a small profit from food sales and could you ad hydroponic systems to Indoor and Outand donations. This year two

quilts, an afghan, a jacket, and a chip bowl (all donated) were raffled off and a 50/50 draw was held to raise a little bit of money to go towards the hall’s expenses, which now currently runs off regional grants, donations, and hall rental profits. The corn and onsite porta-potties were also donated. Tupper Hall has had a long history of volunteers. Volunteers helped rebuild it when it was brought from Swan Lake Provincial Park in the ‘60’s. Buller and her husband even donated their labour to add a deck, stage, new siding, and put in a new floor and ceiling, ‘just to keep the hall going’. Whether volunteering or notmost make sure to make room for a dance or two. “There’s a couple here from Fort St. John, they dance from the time they get here to the time they go to bed,” Buller said. - Hot Dogs - Face Painting - Hand Massages Sharing the floor with the Fort St. John couple, are - Balloons for Kids newlyweds Bruno and Ruth Pohl, who married last March. Free Hair Cuts for a Year (max 6) The couple met at last year’s A Moment For Yourself (Facial & Body Massage) corn and music festival, and Bruno proposed four days later. “I didn’t know what to say, so I said yes!” Ruth says, a decision she does not in the slightest regret. The festival offers food, music, and a little romance to keep the crowds coming back. “It’s so much fun, you see so many people, it’s excellent. It’s 10440 100 Street very...I don’t know, I just love 10442-100th Street 250-787-1553 it,” said Buller. 250-787-1552

Extreme Sports Camp delivers extreme fun in Dawson Creek
By Jill Earl DAWSON CREEK – A group of young daredevils signed up for the most dangerous summer camp offered by the City this summer. Extreme Sports Camp was one of many themed camps run this summer and over the five-day period the camp introduced these courageous participants to skateboarding, BMXing, rock climbing, and archery. Caution was exercised however by Sports Coordinator, Nikki Sander, who has been in her role for four years during the summer months. Participants had to sign a waiver to climb the rock wall, and wear appropriate safety equipment like helmets, knee, wrist, and elbow pads. Safety was also insured with a low instructor/student ratio, approximately 4:1. Sander also enlisted the help of local experts to ease the participants into their sports. Calvin Sexsmith introduced BMX, Tyrel Supernault taught skateboarding, and Allen Hickey offered his expertise in archery at Riley’s Crossing. “They’ve been awesome. The instructors have been excellent with the kids,” Sander said.
It’s clear some of the instructors have had just as much fun as the participants. Tyrel Supernault for example, clearly passionate about his sport, enjoyed not only teaching the campers how to ride but also making them feel welcome and build their confidence-no matter if they decide to continue skateboarding or not. “I’m just trying to show them it’s not about being good, nobody is good at anything when they first start. The best part is to see them get excited about it, but the most important thing is getting kids to have fun and enjoy it,” Supernault says. Supernault’s methods definitely worked on camper Tanel Boeckman, 12, who had never been to the skate park before and appreciates the non-threatening environment of a new class. “It gives me a chance to learn and actually come to the skate park,” Boeckman says. Many camps are geared towards a particular sport or activity, but Sander wanted to provide variety to the program’s participants, the goal of having fun always as the main focus.
“It’s nice to get the kids involved in everything Dawson Creek has to offer. Having fun is the highlight of the camp, not so much the skill aspect,” Sander said. “You’re doing something different everyday. There’s something for everyone,” said camper Dryden Hommy, 11, whose favourite sport was rock climbing despite his admitted fear of heights at the beginning of the week.

Summer Skating at The Pomeroy Sport Centre – These are the dates and times the rink will be open to public: Aug. 27: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m., Aug. 31: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There is a cancelled session on Aug. 26. Helmets to be worn and supervision is recommended for children under eight. Mountain Pine Beetle Tree Collection, Fort St. John – After a resolution was passed by council, there will no longer be free curbside pick of mountain pine beetle waste starting Sept. 30, 2011. The city will provide a disposal site for waste until Dec. 31, 2012. Vision Decision, Fort St. John – After approximately 200 residents casted their votes, the vision statement for Fort St. John remains: Fort St. John, where nature lives, business prosper and families flourish. Hudson Hope RCMP – On Aug. 17, Hudson Hope RCMP called off the search for missing person, Joseph Rene Cote, after receiving information that Cote was in Prince George. He is wanted on a BC wide warrant for sexual assault, according to a press release. Police are still following up with leads on Cote’s location.
36.6 per cent salary hike between the years 2006/07 to 2010/11. Each of the three deputies is making roughly $240,000 to $300,000 annually. The attacks by COPE and BCFED came after the 2011 BC Hydro Review was revealed. The review determined that rates would increase to about 16 per cent over three years, 50 per cent less than the expected rate increase. In order to lower costs BC Hydro was also recommended to decrease expenditures by $800 million and suggested by the panel to cut up to 1,000 employees. On a more local perspective, with Site C now a ‘go-ahead,’ and despite BC Hydro’s current financial conditions, the $25 million-Dawson Creek/Chetywnd transmission line is not anticipated to see any delays. “Given BC Hydro’s obligation to provide reliable service and the high demand growth in this area, we would not anticipate that this project would be deferred or cancelled,” said the ministry of energy and mines spokesperson.

News In Brief...
Story continued from Page 4 of the panel members and their thorough and comprehensive report on the workings of BC Hydro,” according to the ministry’s spokesperson. COPE Local 378 represents approximately 14,000 union members at public and private sector companies in B.C. It is apart of the COPE National Union, which is affiliated with the BC Federation of Labour. Furthermore, in a press release through the government’s Public Accounts, president of BCFED, Jim Sinclair, brought to light the pay increases of John Dyble, Peter Milburn and Wenezenki-Yolland — the three deputy ministers appointed by premier Christy Clark to write the 2011 BC Hydro Review. “It’s hypocrisy of the worst kind when three senior public servants — all of whom have enjoyed massive pay increases over the last five years — call for the dismissal of more than one thousand BC Hydro workers to cover the cost of BC Liberal policy mistakes,” said Sinclair in the release. Dyble, Milburn and Wenezenki-Yolland saw a collaborative

A time capsule opened up at the North Peace Museum By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN - A travelling exhibit, The Barbed Wire Solutions, made its way to the North Peace Museum earlier this summer. An archway that stands at the back of the museum is the starting point into a history lesson that dates back to the First World War: the internment of “enemy aliens” in Canada. Along the sides of the pillars were the names of internees, mostly Ukrainians. Lori Akerman, a second-generation Ukrainian-Canadian and city councilor of Fort St. John, pointed out a name on one of the the giant pillars, coincidentally, that surname also hung on her family tree. Since her father passed away, Ackerman became interested in her family roots. She researched though Ancestry.com the names of past relatives and learned where they came from and how they made their way to Canada.

As she walked through the exhibit of giant displays she pointed out that the reason why some Canadians never get to hear this story is because for those who lived it, it was a past they would rather not talk about. Ackerman’s grandparents never spoke about the internment, she only knew it happened through history classes at school. “They came to a country for a better life … but how could they be a contributing person to society when their new country was doing this to [them]?” she asks. From 1914 to 1920, 8,000 prisoners, known as “enemy aliens” of various ethnics (mostly Ukrainians) age and gender

were interned and the rest carried around citizenship papers. This moment in history eventually led to Canada’s first use of the War Measures Act. “This is part of Canadian history, and as human beings we have not been successful in treating our fellow men in the nicest of ways,” said. Ackerman “We have to look at history and learn from it, in order to move forward.” The exhibit is made up of 24 board displays that showcase the settlement, daily life, internment camps and life after the internment. Artifacts are included, like a miniature display of what a house in the early settlement years looked like. Ackerman hopes school children and families will be able to take advantage of the exhibit, she said. Even though it may not directly affect certain audiences, she still feels as though it’s an incredulous part of Canadian history. The exhibit was travelling for 15 years before it was brought to Fort St. John after one of the museum members saw it in Fairview, Alberta. This is the largest exhibition to ever be displayed at the North Peace museum, according to Heather Longworth, museum manager curator. The Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre developed the Barbed Wire Solutions and it will be at the museum until the end of October.
