FORT ST. JOHN - Imagine a learning space that breaks the norm of a traditional classroom. Desks no longer promptly lined in front of a chalkboard, even the learning strategies have taken a turn. This vision slowly manifested into reality earlier this year when School District 60 in partners with the city leased out part of the Pomeroy Sport Centre as an additional campus to the only secondary school in Fort St. John. The Energetic Learning Campus was the solution to alleviate the population of students at North Peace Secondary School. But it’s not just the campus that’s new; the school curriculum will also showcase a fresh approach to learning. “Instead of just building another school,” Larry Espe, School District 60 superintendent said, him and his colleagues also asked: “Was there something different we can try?” Project Based Learning is a new concept to the high school, but it’s a method already offered in numerous schools across the globe, according to Espe. NPSS adopted the idea of Project Based Learning from High Tech High, a school in San Diego, California. Several teachers and administrators from NPSS went to HTH this past year to study their learning curriculum. The ideas were then brought back to the North. “The cool thing about this campus is that all of the teachers here work together and they started last September and they planned the whole curriculum as a

group,” said NPSS vice-president Sheldon Steele, who will now be located at ELC. “What they’ve built and are planning to do, they’re so passionate about it and what they’re going to deliver to the students,” he added. ELC will have seven teachers. Together they collaborated to create a number of themed projects. Each project will ask one essential question that students will answer using information they’ve already learned that year and incorporating their own interests. “The idea of the theme is to reach kids’ passions,” said Steele. Students then present the projects to their peers, teachers, parents and other adults who helped them develop it. Espe said it is a part of personalized, hands-on learning experience — a break from tradition. “We’ve been asking questions about our teaching for some time. Is our model being affective? And even though a lot of kids were graduating I don’t think we were getting them to the potential they could achieve. They weren’t as engaged as they could be,” Espe said. The campus is on the first floor of the oval-shaped Pomeroy Sport Centre. Classrooms, hallways and lockers will line the perimeter of the centre in an enclosed space, forming a J-shape. Large windows will look out onto the NHLsized ice rink. Story continued on Page 3

The community centre is neighbours with the curling rink, leisure pool, skate park, and outdoor volleyball net — all at the students’ disposal for physical activity classes. Fort St. John’s population growth is steadily increasing, it is expected that the school district will see an increase of 1,000 more students within the next few years. The school, city and Ministry of Education looked at a number of ways to deal with the growth. There was an option to build 11 portables at the cost of roughly $440,000 each, according to Espe. But when the school district discovered the sport centre had 12,000 square-feet of unused space — at the cost of about $5 million, approximately $1 million for a one-year lease and the rest covering capital costs — it became clear what direction they would take.
“If we rent this space and put classes in there that will be a way to connect with the community and also have space for our high school to alleviate some of the pressure at North Peace,” said Steele. It’s a new concept for the school, from the learning strategies to the campus. “It’s not going to be perfect, it’s a new school,” said Steele. “I think it’s a huge step in education.” The classrooms won’t be ready until Sept. 19, but that doesn’t mean teachers won’t be ready for classes. Despite the delays in construction, students will use meeting rooms as temporary classrooms. To date, 161 Grade 10 students have registered and only students attending ELC will engage in Project Based Learning. The ELC was not selective in which students could register; it was open for any Grade 10 who showed interest in transitioning at ELC from middle school to high school, said Espe.
New playground for Wonowon By Kyla Corpuz
PEACE REGION – Wonowon Elementary is one of the 44 schools across B.C. that will get a playground facelift. It was the only school in School District 60 to receive $50,000 in provincial funding for a new playground, an amount former principal, Dave Burridge, was quite thrilled by. “Woo! $20,000 will get ya barely anything — $50,000 will do some good work,” he said. Burridge was the principal at Wonowon for two years, and only recently left last year. During his time there he tried to get grants to upgrade the playground. “I had applied for several grants through different organizations,” he said, but his applications were unsuccessful. “Grants are a funny thing, like you’ll get a list of people you can apply to, but a lot of cases they want PACS involved … that was really difficult because we didn’t have an active PAC,” he said. Upon hearing the news about the new playground for Wonowon, Burridge said the school was in definite need for one. “[The current playground] wouldn’t meet standards and I’ll tell ya, it wouldn’t be acceptable in Fort St. John,” said Burridge. The premier announced on Sept. 2 that it would commit $8 million for school playgrounds in B.C. “Learning continues outside the classroom and playgrounds are a venue where kids come together and learn from each other through play,” said Premier Christy Clark in a press release.
Over 1,300 public elementary and middle schools in B.C. are able to apply for the funding, but 44 schools were recognized as first priority because of its lack of current playgrounds. “There’s a lot of kids…it’s going to be a great opportunity [for them], it’s so exciting,” said Burrige. Wonowon has upwards 50 to 60 students.

above provincial average. For the 2010 FSA writing test, Grade 7 Aboriginals were 18 per cent above the province for meeting or expecting standards. Non-Aboriginal students in the district were 10 per cent above provincial standards. “That’s excellent news,” said Darwin Stump, youth program support worker at Rising Spirit Youth Centre in Fort St. John, in regards to the FSA results. “We would welcome to support them and get those stats even

higher,” he added. Larry Espe, superintendent at School District 60, believes part of the success of students’ writing has to do with the Wireless Writing initiative that started in 2003. George Abbott, Minister of Education, called Fort Nelson a “success story.” “In the last five years the Fort Nelson school district began using its Aboriginal dollars to fund more support that works directly with Aboriginal students,” said Diana Samchuck, superintendent of Fort Nelson’s school district. “Our academic measures for Aboriginal students actually exceed the provincial average, and we’re seeing more of our Aboriginal students graduate as well, so we’re very pleased,” she added. The Ministry of Education also released Education by the Numbers at the end of August. For the upcoming school year, 283 fewer Aboriginal students were enrolled in classes throughout B.C. But Aimee Chalifoux, youth and family program coordinator at Rising Spirit Youth Centre, saw quite the difference. “I’ve been here for two years. A lot of kids that I’ve met were drop-outs and now they’re going back to school,” she said. Rising Spirit not only caters to Aboriginal youth but youth and adults of all demographics. The centre recently added three new tutors to their programs. “We also keep track of our clients coming in and out, and there has been a rise in youth coming in, status and non-status First Nations,” said Stump. The centre also offers holistic help such as cooking, counseling services, youth group and recreation programs that Chalifoux said “absolutely” influences success in academics. D.C. City councillors clarify commitment to new candidates By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK - Another three years has nearly passed and the next round of municipal elections are right around the corner. Although Coun. Marilyn Belak was unavailable for comment, all councillors excluding Bud Powell are seeking re-election, and Theresa Gladue is still undecided. Powell, 71, on council for 12 years (four terms) has decided not to run again. He is pleased with accomplishing the multiplex and Calvin Kruk Centre initiatives. Powell will however remain on the Dawson Creek Tourism Board. “I think it’s time for me to step aside. Twelve years is along time, it’s time to do something for myself,” Powell said. Whoever is voted in Powell hopes they support the mayor’s vision and that they understand their responsibilities. “I hope they realize it’s quite a commitment, I hope that they maintain the momentum that we’ve had at the moment,” Powell said. Theresa Gladue can attest to this, as the tremendous time commitment may effect her decision to run again. “People need to realize you’re a councillor 24/7,” Gladue said. Mayor Mike Bernier also stresses the responsibility involved in becoming a part of council. “We encourage everybody in the community to get involved and to get the information. The biggest thing whether it be for running for mayor or running for council is we want people to know what they’re getting into. What the rules are, the regulations, the legislation of what you can and can’t do. There’s always a misconception out there of what a mayor or council
can do and the authorities that they have,” Bernier said. He notes that power in city hall comes from the united group, not individually. The 2011 civic election nomination package states that council and mayor positions do not receive benefits or vacation pay, and highlights that evening and weekend commitments are occasionally required. These commitments could be anything from representing the city at functions or attending committee meetings. “In order to be a productive city councilor you have to be out there and engaged and not just about the things your passionate about,” said Coun. Cheryl Shuman Shuman and other first term councillors Kenny and McFadyen are hoping to represent the city for an additional three years. “My work is not finished…I know there’s still lots to be done in D.C. and I think you need to have a council that can think big picture who can look at making decisions that are best for the community overall and not for specific stakeholders or groups. It’s very important for me to continue having the city move forward in a positive, progressive way,” Shuman said. “One term is not enough, you need to do two, one you’re just getting your feet wet really. I’ve been involved in so many decisions that are key to the community and I feel a responsibility to see it through,” Kenny said, on why she’s seeking reelection. “I’m definitely, 100 per cent running again. I would like to serve at least one more term…It’s been an exciting challenge and I’m hoping the citizens of Dawson Creek will give me the Collin Budd, representing Epscan Industries, Coun. honour of serving them again,” said Bernier, on his election plans. McFadyen was unavailable for comment, but if his “Reelect Terry McFadyen” float in this year’s fall fair parade is any indication of his intensions, McFadyen will be running. Nomination packages can be picked up at City Hall and are to be submitted by Oct. 16 for Election Day on Nov. 19.

Internation Literacy Day is Today! by Michelle Mobley
Did you know that about nine million Canadians do not have the minimum literacy skills needed to fully engage in the workplace, at home, or in their community? Having strong literacy skills helps us to understand information and gives us the skills to make better decisions. Literacy also allows people to have a voice in their community, and gives them the tools to shape their lives. Since 1966 many countries around the world have recognized September 8th as a day to celebrate and improve literacy skills. This year’s theme of International Literacy Day is “Literacy and Peace”. What will you do on September 8th to celebrate International Literacy Day? Why not participate in our photo contest? Since we live in The Peace, we thought it would be nice to see your “Piece of the Peace”. Submit a photo taken in the Peace Country, and tell us what the Peace Country means to you! Simply post your photo on our Facebook page “Dawson Creek Literacy Now”. The photo with the most ‘likes’ will win a prize! Contest closes September 30th. Do you really need to rake all the leaves in your yard? By Charlie Lake Conservation Society CHARLIE LAKE- It’s that time of year when we’re called away from the couch and the football game to take part in the erroneous task of leaf raking. Neighbours and friends can be seen busily raking summer’s discards, only to bag or stuff the gathered leaves into coloured plastic garbage bags leaving yards displayed with over stuffed pumpkins and white plastic ghosts. After the bags have sat in the yard for a couple of weeks, they usually end up in a landfill or the city dump with little regard into what’s a missed opportunity for composting. How many of these bags actually sit under a blanket of snow all winter long only to be tossed into the garbage in the spring? By leaving the leaves in your yard, you’ll discover that you’ll not only save time and money, but you’ll be helping mother earth as well. Leaf debris or leaf litter is good for healthy living soil. The leaves provide huge amounts of good soil bacteria, fungi and nematodes to work in the soil. Oak leaves and aspen leaves are the recommended leaves to till into your vegetable garden. You can also blow or rake leaves to an unused part of your yard to compost during late fall and winter before adding them to your flower beds and gardens in spring. Leaf debris is important for critters to eat or hide in and the leaves serve as nature’s blanket during winter.
In the fall, use a mulching or rotary lawnmower on your lawn to shred the leaves and then leave them on the grass to nourish it. Leaves and leaf litter provide food and shelter for: earthworms, bugs, bees, birds and amphibians. This in turn attracts toads, frogs and small animals which are welcomed guests to any garden. Almost all backyard birds require protein from worms and insects to feed their young and suddenly your backyard is alive. Now, you don’t have to make your backyard a wildlife habitat - but remember to NOT completely clean up everything when your garden stops flowering or the leaves have fallen. Plant large shrubs where wildlife can live and eat. Allow some flowers to turn to seed and let your lawn grow tall in certain spots. Create a compost heap and use the leaves as a mulch or suppressant to discourage the growth of weeds. Illuminating your garden with lights will disturb some nocturnal creatures and most importantly, remember that concentrated fertilizers kill bacteria, fungi and drive the earthworms away. So, leave the leaves and enjoy that Saturday afternoon football game. Some of your friends and neighbours might not thank you - but Mother Nature will! Thank a trucker for the goods we ship and receive - National Trucking Week Sept 4-10
By Blair Lekstrom Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Thank a trucker the next time you pick something off the store shelf. Just about every product we use or consume arrives by truck. Everything from Blackberries to blueberries, whether it was manufactured overseas or produced in British Columbia makes its way to our homes via plane, ship or train through B.C.’s transportation network - and, ultimately, by truck. Our exporters depend on trucks, too - and our mining, forestry, agricultural and fishery products would not reach customers abroad without the support of B.C.’s vibrant trucking industry. That is why the provincial government is working with truckers to move products to and from and within B.C. more smoothly. B.C. already has a world-class transportation network that ensures the free movement of people, goods and services, but we have to plan ahead for future growth in our economy. That means investing $12 billion since 2001 in road and highway infrastructure that moves truck traffic away from
neighbourhoods to more efficient routes. The Nelson Rd. Interchange on Highway 91 is the latest addition to our Pacific Gateway Strategy to streamline trucker access to Port Metro Vancouver. Ultimately the goal is to boost domestic, cross-border and global export opportunities. It’s about bringing new investment into all regions of the province - accelerating job creation and growing revenues which support B.C. families. The B.C. Trucking Association plays a key role in helping us achieve these goals. Reducing red tape is another great way to make trucking more efficient. The New West Partnership program is a prime example. The three western provinces have agreed to align trucking regulations to remove economic barriers and move products between B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan more seamlessly. This makes our region more competitive internationally and generates more jobs for B.C. truckers. We are taking advantage of modern technology too. In co-operation with B.C. truckers, we have developed the
Weigh2GoBC system to keep trucks moving with fewer stops. Rather than pulling every truck over to the side of the road for inspection, a registered vehicle carrying a transponder can be identified and checked electronically for height, weight, insurance and safety credentials at highway speed. If a truck receives a green light, it rolls on down the highway without unnecessary stops. If a driver receives a red light, the driver is asked to pull over, keeping our highways safe and reducing line-ups at weigh stations. I am proud to promote National Trucking Week in association with the B.C. Trucking Association. Together we are working to make our provincial economy more competitive internationally. B.C. is Canada’s Pacific Gateway to growing markets in China, Korea, Japan and India, and we are in a position to lead the national economy out of today’s economic turmoil and secure the jobs of tomorrow. This week when I sit down with friends and family for dinner, I am going to think about the truckers who brought it all home.
Letter from Canadian Building Trades (unions) in support of Enbridge Northern Gateway
National Energy Board Letter of Comment VIA NEB Website Submission August 30, 2011 The Northern Gateway Project is a game changer for construction workers in the coming years. It opens new markets for “Made in Canada” oil products not only for North American customers but now to another large economic region. Canadian construction workers will benefit not only from the initial build but also from oil and gas infrastructure expansion in Alberta of Canada’s reserve of petroleum products. As we already know, when oil and gas investment is made in Alberta, all regions of Canada benefit. When the Gateway is finished it opens up new markets to Canadians in every industry. An expansion of pipeline will not only increase the petroleum production capabilities of Canada, but will further cement our place as an oil-producing country in an increasingly energy
hungry world. There are an estimated 315 billion barrels of oil available in the oil sands - the continued expansion of this resource will contribute to Canada’s energy super power status. Economic prosperity does not have to come at the expenses of environmental care for future generations. Our members are implementing and using new technologies developed by industry to minimize the carbon footprint of the industrial process in Alberta. The men and women of the Canadian Building Trades live, work and play in Alberta and British Columbia and have a vested interest in protecting the land. Our members raise their families in the communities the pipeline will pass through this piece of Canadian infrastructure is more than a few pay cheques to our members. The permanent nature of the facilities along the pipeline provide long term jobs and careers. The development of the Northern Gateway project does not put
British Columbia’s natural beauty at risk. The regulation of the oil and gas industry as a whole ensures that the impact to the environment and native peoples will be minimal and the benefits should far exceed any possible drawbacks. The job opportunities associated with construction of a pipeline of this nature are enormous. Pipelines provide opportunities for young Canadians to pursue an apprenticeship program and gives valuable on the job experience for local labour markets. The Affiliates of the Canadian Building Trades have a large economic and social interest in this project receiving approval to proceed from the National Energy Board. Robert R Blakely Director of Canadian Affairs Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO

A heartfelt thank you to our little brown bats By the Charlie Lake Conservation Society CHARLIE LAKE – Many enjoyable nights were spent this past summer sitting around a campfire, either in your back yard or in one of the numerous parks on Charlie Lake. Did you notice that most of the nights were virtually mosquito free? Now that fall is approaching, it’s time to pay tribute to our friends - the Little Brown Bats, and thank them for their diligent work. Bats are good friends or neighbours to have around. A single bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in one hour. Their activity begins shortly before nightfall as the bats prepare for the evening feeding period. The bats return to roost late evening, but leave again for another feeding period near dawn. All of them return to roost before sunrise and remain inside during the day.

They are one of nature’s best pest controllers and you can lend them a helping hand by setting up a bat house in your neighbourhood. Two features appear to be critical in attracting bats – the distance you are from water, no more than a quarter mile away, and the amount of solar radiation received. A minimum of fours sunshine is required. Bat houses should be placed south facing in full sun and around 12 to 15 feet off the ground. In northern B.C., bat houses should be painted black to absorb the sun’s heat and poplar or aspen trees work well as a mount for the houses. Once again, mount them with a southerly exposure in mind. Arranging bat houses in groups of three or more will improve the number of bats you want to attract. After all, they enjoy their own company! It’s also a good idea to erect bat houses now and increase your chances of having them move into the bat house before they move into your attic or your house. There are hundreds of ideas for bat houses online so make bat houses your winter project this year so that you’ll have a welcoming home for our Little Brown Bats next spring! Graduation rates Gibson Energy donates $1,000 to NPCC need improvement Story continued from Page 3. The graduation rate of Aboriginals within six years starting at Grade 8 is below 50 per cent in B.C. “That to me is entirely unacceptable and we need to improve on that…over the decade there has been an eight per cent improvement in Aboriginal graduate rates. We need to keep building on that more quickly than we have in recent decades,” said Abbott. In the North Peace region it doesn’t escalate much higher than that, as 51 per cent of Aboriginal students graduated in 2009 and non-Aboriginals had a 79 per cent graduation rate. Results in Grade 10 math throughout the region for general and Aboriginal students were significantly below provincial results. “[This] has been a challenge and it’s not just a challenge this year or last year but it has been a challenge literally for decades in aboriginal education,” said Abbott. “We’re working with school districts through an instrument that we call Aboriginal education enhancement and we’re increasingly seeing districts continually focused on Aboriginal students,” he added. In 2009 a number of First Nations bands, society groups, and North Peace residents acknowledged that Aboriginal students were performing at a much lower level than non-Aboriginals. As a result, the Enhancement Agreement was created with a purpose to work with Aboriginal students and close the educational gap.

Conference focused on community future By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- Community Futures is committed to helping its members foster economic development by offering their expertise in entrepreneurship. This year, their Peace Liard branch was awarded the opportunity to hold the association’s annual conference that will take place Sept. 11 to 13. General manager of the Peace Liard branch and organizer of the conference, Sue Kenny, has extended the invitation beyond membership and welcomes all community members interested to register. “The conference is usually closed to Community Futures organizations, living in the north we look for opportunities to allow people those opportunities to attend this type of conference and this type of professional development education,” Kenny said. The conference is entitled “Embracing Change” and hopes to help businesses and organizations adapt to an ever-changing market, and succeed in it. “Change is never easy no matter where you are, whether in your work space, your family space, no matter where you are. Change is good when you’ve prepared for it and when you’ve adapted to it,” said Kenny. Arlene Dickinson, entrepreneur and member of the CBC series the Dragon’s Den, will speak to successful business. Trevor Linden, retired hockey player, will speak on leadership. “Trevor Linden has been huge as a philanthropist and in economic development. He’s a leader. He’s in pretty big demand as far as a speaker, speaking on leadership, and all of us as community development practitioners we have to lead. We have to foster confidence within our organization and it’s a leadership role,” said Kenny. Different workshops will touch on: working with different generations in the workplace, social media and how to market with those tools, and business succession planning. “These are all great tools that we’re bringing to businesses. We also have people coming from local government, federal government, and the province because it’s also a great networking opportunity for government to find out what’s going on in the community,” she said. The conference will also showcase organizations that have demonstrated innovation while embracing change, and include

Dr. Charles Helm will also speak to the success Tumbler Ridge has had embracing change. “With the mines closing, that community had to embrace change. They could have locked the door or they could have looked forward and they looked forward and supported tourism and paleontology and used those forms to create a new economy in their community so now their not single industry...that’s embracing change,” said Kenny. Roundtable discussions are also scheduled. “We take away best practices, and networking, and professional development. Things that are going to help our businesses, that’s what we bring to our conferences so that we learn and we can pass it on,” Kenny said.

Why We Support The Public Review Process More than 850 members of the Northern Gateway Alliance support a comprehensive, fair and transparent regulatory review of the proposed Northern Gateway Pipelines Project by the federal Joint Review Panel - which has been given authority to review the project on behalf of all Canadians. 7he public review process is designed to thoroughly test the project¶s engineering, bene¿ts, planning and safety procedures and to ensure that appropriate consultation has been done with communities and individuals including Aboriginal communities. It enables everyone to have their questions answered and concerns addressed. %ased on its hearings and information ¿led on the public record, the Joint Review Panel will assess the project¶s environmental impact and decide whether the project is in the public interest. Not all Alliance members have taken a position on the project, but we believe the bene¿ts and opportunities associated with Northern Gateway should be given serious consideration. I will continue to inform Alliance members of ways they can participate in and be informed about the project’s progress. 1RUWKHUQ *DWHZD\ 3LSHOLQHV SURYLGHV ¿QDQFLDO VXSSRUW IRU WKH 1RUWKHUQ *DWHZD\ $OOLDQFH DV SDUW RI LWV FRPPLWPHQW WR SXEOLF HQJDJHPHQW www.northerngatewayalliance.ca Sincerely,

Rogers Communications to build new communication facility
By Jill Earl DAWSON CREEK – City council heard a proposal from Rogers Communications Inc. last meeting, notifying the city of their intentions to build a radio communication facility. The cell tower proposed site is located at 1100- Alaska Ave. “They say they’ve chosen that location because it’s technically suitable for their network, it’s in a non-residential zone, and it’s therefore appropriate in the location that minimizes visibility from residential areas and will accommodate other telecommunication providers in the future,” said Jim Chute, Chief Administrative Officer summarizing the proposal. The suggested tower would be 40 metres in height and improve service and coverage to Dawson Creek, those along the Tupper highway, Spirit River highway, Northern River, and Water Route. “The tower will be visible to the traveling public along Alaska Avenue and to the surrounding commercial neighbourhood. The visibility from residential properties to the east and southwest will be minimal, as the proposed tower is more than 300 metres
away from the closest residential property,” the proposal stated. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association estimates that approximately 40% of antenna sites in Canada are stationed on other tall structures other then cell towers. Site surveyors considered other tall buildings in the area, but none were sufficient for the height required. Concerns over esthetics arose during the meeting, that and other questions brought up by council regarding further intentions and safety will be submitted to Standard Land Company Inc, the company representing Rogers in municipal and land affairs. “I believe it’s in an area right down town, right near where we’re trying to develop and beautify,” said Mayor Mike Bernier. “I just think it looks ugly,” added councillor Cheryl Shuman. Rogers is to respond to the City’s and public questions before work begins on the site, as apart of the proposal process. Ultimately Industry Canada has jurisdiction over whether or not the tower gets built and the City’s concerns will be forwarded to Industry Canada for consideration.

PEACE REGION - Paws for a Cause hopes to see tails wagging and hands donating for animals in need. A walkathon hosted in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek welcomes every man’s best friend. All the proceeds raised during Paws for a Cause will fund the local SPCA. Paws for a Cause has inspired some to go above and beyond for fundraising. “The creativity and passion that people show each year are remarkable,” said SPCA director of development Denise Meade in a press release. “People from every region of the province … gather together each September to go on walkathons and hold many interesting all ages events and activities to raise money to help animals in their community.” In Fort St. John volunteers showed their support. “There are core individuals who believe in animal welfare and helping them out. [Paws for a Cause] raises so much money locally to help local animals,” said Brittany Bennett, animal health technician at the Rivers Animal Hospital. RAH opened their facility to host the second most successful fundraiser for the Cause — doggy day spa organized by Team Muttz. Bennett said they had to add an extra doggy day spa to accommodate all the pet owners interested. The spa raised $5,000 a significant difference from the previous year that raised just under $2,000. “The funds go to the SPCA, the Rivers Animal Hospital doesn’t benefit from it, the benefit we have is getting it out there and spreading the word,” said Bennett. She added the hospital regularly attends to SPCA animals. Though Paws for a Cause pays particular attention to dogs, the fundraiser doesn’t focus on helping only canines but all animals in need. “The funds aren’t centered around dogs its centered around any animal that’s sheltered at the time,” said Bennett. Bennett said the involvement of dogs is a way for animal lovers to engage with interactive pets. This is the single largest event in B.C. that helps animals in need. In Fort St. John the event will take place on Saturday at the Centennial Park. Registration starts at 11 a.m. and the walkathon is at 1 p.m. In Dawson Creek, the walkathon will start at Kin Park on Sunday. Registration also starts at 11 a.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m.

FSJ: Iron Man time
By Pat Ferris, Ferris Fast Cycles Barb Polehoykie led the way for the Blizzards at the Penticton Ironman, this past Sunday. Her excellent 12:15:09 hour finish was good for eighth spot in her age class. Other local finishers were Darrin Guliov 12:27:40, Sandy McDonald 12:43:26, Rob Churchill 13:19:04, Floyd Polehoykie 15:47:38 and Bob Andrews 15:52:28. Brody Garrison did not continue after the end of the bike portion. Sandy McDonald was the local groups’ fastest swimmer with 1:07:51; Darren Guliov had the fastest bike split at 6:02:04 and Barb Polehoykie the fastest run at 4:38:37. Those not familiar with this epic event should consider the distances of ‘The Ironman’, in the Okanagan sun. Each triathlete starts with a 3.8 km massed start, open water lake swim, followed by a 180 km open road bike ride over Richter Pass and finishes with a 42.2 km marathon. A good ‘age class’ time is 10-15 hours of non-stop effort. An optional ambulance ride and a stay in the famous medical tent await those who fail to finish.
Today is Literacy Day in Fort St. John

By Kyla Corpuz FORT ST. JOHN – Sept. 8 was recognized in the ‘60s as International Literacy Day, but only recently did city council proclaim it in Fort St. John. The numbers of illiterate persons around the globe are staggering. One in five adults is not literate, two-thirds of whom are women; more than 700 million adults lack the minimum literacy skills and 75 million children are not in school, these numbers were presented to council on Aug. 22 by Clarice Eckford, Fort St. John Literacy outreach coordinator. Scale down the scope from international to local statistics: Twenty-five per cent of the city’s population aged 18 to 25 years have not completed high school. Evidently, illiteracy begins with the lack of education at a grass root level. In an effort to remove that stigma, Eckford’s position, the outreach coordinator was created. “The reason they wanted to create [the position] was to supplement what was going on in the schools,” said Eckford. “The thing about the schools is that they’re already so busy. The teachers are already burnt out. So the teachers can’t be everything to everyone. If the supports aren’t there, like the early childhood support, the supports for youth outside school, then kids will drop out. Kids won’t perform as well in school.” The Fort St. John Literacy Society has a number of organizations under its wing that supports different aspects of higher learning. From programs that reach out to adults, families, immigrants and single dads, its purpose is to promote literacy for all individuals and groups. “It’s not just a school issue, it’s a community issue,” Eckford said. “That’s what my position is, to go out into the community and support the school district and the community by having programs that will keep kids in school to graduate and succeed.” As part of celebrating International Literacy Day, Eckford is encouraging employees to take part in the Literacy Day Workplace Challenge that will last from now to the end of the month. This years international theme is Literacy for Peace. Last year, council proclaimed Family Literacy Day in Fort St. John on Jan. 27.

Open House hopes to inspire Rage in the community By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK - In an effort to reach out to the community the Dawson Creek Rage hosted an open house on Sept 1. The Junior A team which officially started it’s season last Friday with a game against Grande Prairie, season ticket holders were welcomed to pick up their tickets, meet members of the team, and take a tour of their locker rooms. “The purpose was to get the community in here and show them around,” said player, Jared Crema, 19. “It’s a chance for our ticket holders to meet the players, to shake hands, and so we can show our appreciation and tell them about the perks. It’s a way for them to get a little more in touch with the team. I always say the first half of the season
they want to learn more about our team, and the second half they all turned into fans,” said head coach and general manager, Scott Richmond. The team has also made an effort last season reaching out to the wider community by visiting schools and speaking about being role models, reading to kids, and playing pond hockey. “It’s important for us to be involved with little kids and being positive in the community. We have big group of young fans, that’s most of our fan base. Meeting us is always exciting for them; they’ll always have smiles on their faces. It’s good for us,” said Crema. Community involvement initiatives such as the open house and the Rage Summer Hockey Camp are ways the team tries
to meet and connect with fans. “When the fans see the individual players, they have a connection and then they’ll want to come out more,” said Rage player Carter Page, 19. Last year the team won 25 games out of a 58-game schedule, and had the best record out of all four expansion teams last year. The team is hoping to give the fans reason to watch, as they are very optimistic about their second and upcoming season. “We have to think we can do better, simply, we expect to win every game,” Richmond said. “We have some pretty big expectations, and expect nothing less than the championship,” Crema said.

The donation received that afternoon would go towards the next two months of their commercial rent, said treasurer Sonja Butts. “[Bourassa] did not have to do this,” said council member Rosemary Landry. “Obviously, he sees the values of the art,” said Popesku. The Arts Council is an umbrella organization of around 29 member groups from dance, pottery, painting, choir, theatre and literacy. Chances Casino Fort St. John opened its doors in 2007, since then it has donated over $200,000 through the Bingo Association and the ‘found money’ box, but it also benefits the Community Gaming Grant. Though the casino has been a positive asset to funding non-profit organizations, the social issue around gambling has its own downsides. “You have what they suggest are the benefits — the money that comes in — but the social costs and families destroyed far outweighs this,” said Area C director, Arthur Hadland, in a previous interview with the Northeast News.
Volume Loss is a Key sign of Aging Possible effects of volume loss: As we age, soft tissue in the face may atrophy, resulting in a thinning of the skin and a loss of firmness, plumpness and elasticity. This may lead to sagging, sinking, and a general flattening of facial features.

Master Your Money
What Makes One Person Rich And The Next Person Poor? The Principal, The Welder, and the Protege Know
Have you ever wondered why two people from almost identical beginnings can end up so different later in life? Both of them raised in a good family with decent schooling and opportunities. Both of them intelligent people who understand the fundamentals of investing and wealth. Yet one of them goes on to create millions of dollars in net worth by the time they are 45... while the other continues to struggle with money every single payday. Why is that? My name is Darren Weeks and I am fortunate to have created a substantial amount of wealth for myself and my clients. I certainly wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. I had a humble beginning, but I discovered some very important lessons early on that helped me become a multi-millionaire by the time I was 35 yrs old. I was born and raised in Edmonton, earned a University degree and learned it doesn’t make you wealthy. You need to study money in order to become rich. Come to this FREE event and learn two things: how to save taxes and get better returns on your investments. My company, The Fast Track Group was just ranked 40th Fastest Growing Company in Canada by Profit Magazine for 2011. In 9 years I have taken it from 5 employees to over 100. I have helped 50,500 Canadians save $898 MILLION in taxes alone in the past 9 years. Those who I helped also donated $1.6 billion to charity in this same time. My greatest pride in all of this? Seeing my clients, students and peers succeeding and thriving in the current economy. A true story of 3 unlikely underdogs who mastered the money game. They each came to me at different times for unique needs in creating, growing and protecting their money.
philosophy and ultimately discovered my events in Canada. One thing led to another and Rick ended up investing in real estate and starting a few businesses on the side while maintaining his job as a principal.
The real estate business grew quickly thanks to The Fast Track Group. Today, Sam continues to help run the family businesses, as well as his own rapidly growing portfolio of investments and businesses.
Now Rick and his wife operate a very successful real estate investing company and Rick has entered into an agreement with the Fast Track Group to share his own strategies and formulas for getting rich in uncertain economies.
Sam quickly learned that his upbringing and nonreliance on a career-based paycheque was the only way to create true financial independence. “Learn about money and leverage, and you will never again worry about your future, your freedom, or your independence. Anyone scared of their financial future NEEDS to understand the proper mindset of those who have created real wealth in the current economy.”
As Rick says: “I am just an Average Everyday Canadian who educated myself on the right kind of money mindset that creates financial independence, and took massive action to make it a reality. I am VERY concerned about all the people who will be at retirement age in the next 10 years, yet have nothing saved for their retirement. Learning about money from those who have made lots of it was the greatest investment I ever made in myself... and it’s now my turn to pass that knowledge and experience on.” The Welder: Rob Chaulk came to one of my events in the Spring of 2008. He grew up in a family with a poor dad, and a rich dad (his uncle). So Rob had been given a good start on his money education. But it wasn’t enough. Rob Chaulk was a blue collar worker that knew his job wasn’t going to make life any easier. He held careers as an Ironworker, a welder, a heavy equipment operator and a crane operator. He dabbled in some businesses along the way in the restaurant and towing business. When Rob read the Rich Dad book, he took it serious and within 30 days he bought his first rental property. He was hooked. He put together a plan for 10 properties in 10 years... his key to retirement. Right around this same time he had lunch with his rich dad (his multi-millionaire uncle). Not exactly an easy guy to talk to, his uncle “Frank” was self-made and not easy to approach about money. But Rob did approach him - and Frank told him how stupid he was being and how little he still understood about money and leverage. Frank then went on and shared with Rob one of the greatest lessons he had ever learned. Money is ALL about leverage. When your money makes more money for you than your job does... then you are well on your way to financial freedom. If you make $20 an hour at your job - true financial independence begins when the money you invest is making you $25 an hour, without you having to do anything more. Frank showed him how to turn his rental property into 10 properties in just 12 months. Rob then came to a Get Rich event, hosted by myself... and was able to create a $4 million dollar property portfolio in just 24 months. As Rob says “Money is just the scorecard. When you understand the rules of the game - and how the game works - the money will find you!” While he was building his portfolio of properties, Rob
Note one thing about the education system... ...the lack of focus on money, investing, leverage and business. The Principal: Rick Seutter grew up a hard working boy on a dairy farm. Rather than dreaming of his son taking over the farm, Rick’s dad encouraged him to go to school and aim for a good solid career. Being a good son, Rick did just that. He finished high school, went on to get his Bachelors degree, and become a school teacher. The perfect ‘secure’ career as many would like to think. Rick spent 22 years in the education system as a high school teacher and then as a principal. As the years got on, Rick started to see the cracks in the traditional school => career => retirement plan that everyone was so convinced on. Note one thing about the education system... ...the lack of focus on money, investing, leverage and business. ...Which explains why Rick soon became so frustrated with this ultimate lifestyle his father told him to pursue. The pension plan offered to teachers and principals was hardly enough to live a life of relative freedom. Rick started reading about the Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad
also took his health very seriously. Rob was overweight, had high blood pressure, sleep apnea and was sluggish every waking hour. After dropping over 100 pounds, Rob found a new lifestyle that had been long lost, and a money mindset that continues to help him and his family with all of the retirement and dreams. The Protege: Sam Ammar grew up in a very unusual family and location. Sam’s dad moved to Canada speaking very little English, a grade 8 education, and just a few dollars saved to start his new life. Sam’s father ended up starting a janitorial business, which then opened the doors to investing in a hotel, which his mother helped run. They were quick to leverage the janitorial business and hotel into a portfolio of businesses that now includes a Laundromat, a liquor store, a fencing company, commercial real estate investments, and a number of residential real estate companies. One of Sam’s interests was the real estate side and Sam was able to take their 2 residential properties and quickly leverage them into 18 properties.
Is it your turn to master the money mindset? I am proud to share that my system has worked for everyone who aggressively applied it. You could be the one with a large real estate portfolio and a business or two that runs without you. ...Most people are broke, and will stay that way for the rest of their life. My company has organized an event coming up in your city and I would like you to join us. Commitment needs follow through and my team is here to make sure you get the tools you need for creating the independence you crave. Which of these would you like to put a permanent end to? • Worrying about how you will EVER get ahead when the government continues to take what you make. • The fear that your children will not have solid opportunities to create wealth, as the present generations seem to be wasting it all away. • The jealousy you feel when someone else ends up doing exceptionally well financially, knowing FULL WELL you are as smart, or smarter, than they are. • Arguing with your spouse about money and the
Is it your turn to master the money mindset? challenges that come with growing and protecting it. • Constantly fretting over the fine balance of saving, investing and playing with your money. • Dreaming about that long vacation you have always wanted and needed, yet knowing it may never happen at the rate you are going now. Give us 3 hours of your time and we’ll give you powerful strategies that are guaranteed to change your life. Find out how to get out of bad debt and into wise investments. Discover how anyone, no matter how dire their circumstances, can go from rags to riches in 5 years or less. My students and business partners are
prime examples of how you can start with nothing and build a very healthy investment portfolio and business in 5 years or less. The best part? We don’t just show you what to do... you get the formula to go as fast as you like, and can handle. Most seminars share the what – not the how. We show you both with specific examples, formulas and resources to get you there on your own pace. Don’t go it alone! Bring a friend or family member with you and enjoy the journey to wealth as a team. When you reserve your seat at this event and bring a guest, we will also give you a CD that sells for $39.95 on our site. Nothing good is ever FREE... right? Wrong. I know you may be sceptical because we aren’t charging you for this event. Think about this. Each one of the 3 I have talked about in this started off at a free event just like this. They heard about an event just like this put on by my company. They attended and absorbed every ounce of information shared, and took MASSIVE ACTION. Each of them is now financially independent and able to live life on their own terms. What should you do next? Pick up your phone and dial 1-877-742-4236 or visit our website at www.GetRichInDawsonCreek.ca or www.GetRichInFortStJohn.ca and reserve your seat there. Find one or more friends or family members who want out of the rat race like you do... and get them a seat booked as well. Last? Don’t let anyone discourage you or get in your way. Real independence starts when you learn to ignore all the negative people in your life who don’t want you to succeed. Make sure you show up, take lots of notes, and immediately start putting these ideas into action. If 3 completely unknown individuals can be in the same situation you are and become financially independent in 5 years or less... why can’t you? This is the real deal and I have gone from $0 to $100 million in revenues in just 9 years using these strategies... my students are proof that my techniques work everywhere, for anyone who is willing to take action. Stop what you are doing right now and get your seat booked. Dial 1-877-742-4236 or visit our website at www.GetRichInDawsonCreek.ca or www.GetRichInFortStJohn.ca and reserve your seat there. Did you know or remember ? St. Martin’s church turns 80 By Jean Gammage FORT ST. JOHN – Do you remember the St Martin’s in the Field Anglican church from 1931? It used to sit where the shared church of St Martin’s Anglican and St Luke’s United Church sit today next to the Credit Union.
Pet Photo of the Week This is our dog Henry. Henry is a very lovable dog. Henry loves car rides and hanging out at the Charlie Lake cabin.
Email your pet’s photo to editor@northeastnews.ca for a chance to win a special prize

North Peace Veterinary Clinic
St Martin’s 80th anniversary, open house will be held on the museum grounds Saturday 17th September from 1 pm to 4 pm. Refreshments will be served, music by local artists, old photos and information displays a time to reminisce. When we talk of the North Peace Parish, of course we don’t mean just Fort St. John, indeed when the first Anglican pioneers arrived it seems Fort St. John was barely visible, and even when I first saw it, I thought it was just a farm! Quotes from Monica Storrs book. St Martin’s in the Field (like the church in Trafalgar Square London) and the St John’s church hall in Baldonnel (now a private home) were consecrated in August 1931 eighty years ago. The real development of church life began with the ordination of the First Minister, the Rev George Wolfendale 1931- 1935, fondly known as “Brother Wolf” who helped build the church. Again quoting Monica Storrs “He was a small man but very active and strong, he was eager and fearless, and entirely unselfish he traveled continually--- first on a tremendous horse, suitably called Miles but also on foot, on skis on a raft and in a poor old car which he took where no other car would go –until it fell to pieces around him. George Wolfendale enlisted as a Stretcher Bearer in the Second World War, then a Chaplin with the Royal Canadian Engineers he died of wounds on June 11th 1944 he was awarded the (O.B.E.) Order of the British Empire the same year. His name was
remembered in the Wolfendale Memorial Hall, together with those of four young men from the Peace Parish that also died in the War. The hall was quite a community centre, it sat a few yards from the old church next to what is now Patch Java coffee shop. It was still in use when our family arrived in 1968 my girls went to Sunday School there, meetings, Brownies, Girl Guides and Scouts, potluck suppers, bazaars and teas to name a few of the functions this well used and loved old hall. The old church that had so much character was in use when we came to town did not fare so well and was in poor shape, it was moved down to the old Fort to be part of a park but sadly before repairs could be made it was destroyed by fire by vandals in 1970. The Peace country parish has some colorful characters who were strong supporters of St Martins Anglican church including the well respected surveyor, Duncan Cran who has a school named after him. For further interesting reading, copies of a brief History on the North Peace River Parish including a forward by Duncan Cran and an article by Monica Storrs (who died in 1968) will be available on Saturday 17th September from 1pm to 4 pm at the museum grounds, look forward to seeing you there.

Master Your Money 3 Unlikely Underdogs Have Proven
We Are Right SMACK in the Middle of the Perfect Storm For Wealth Driven Investors Meet The Principal, The Welder, and the Protege If you watch too much news right now you’d think the world is ending in just a few days. Markets down. Gold up. Real estate bubbles have permanently burst. All of it is ABSOLUTE NONSENSE. Everything we are seeing right now we have seen before. Everything the media is feeding the public is fuelling the fire and only making matters worse. The worst part is... those who are blindly following the media’s lead, are the ones who could be making the most money right now. Yes, it’s true... as the sky falls around us (according to the press), everyday Canadians are making a mint and building their wealth. They aren’t doing anything you couldn’t do... in fact they are just following a step-by-step formula that I recommended to them, and they are finally living the lifestyle that they dreamed of. My name is Darren Weeks and I am fortunate to have created a substantial amount of wealth for myself and my clients. I certainly wasn’t raised with a silver spoon in my mouth. I had a humble beginning, but I discovered some very important lessons early on that helped me become a multi-millionaire by the time I was 35 years old. I did exactly what my parent’s wanted me to do after high school. I went to the University of Alberta in Edmonton and got a degree in Commerce. Much to my disappointment, getting a degree didn’t make me rich. I soon realized that you have to study money in order to become wealthy. The more time you direct towards your financial affairs, the more money you’ll have. Come to my FREE event and I’ll teach you two things that will make you wealthier right away: better returns on your investments and saving taxes. They haven’t fallen for the doom and gloom. In fact, the ignore it and have taken charge of their own financial future... knowing full well the media can be morons when it comes to financial advice. A true story of 3 unlikely underdogs who mastered the money game. They each came to me at different times for unique needs in creating, growing and protecting their money. The perfect ‘secure’ career as
Note one thing about the education system... ...the lack of focus on money, investing, leverage and business. many would like to think. Rick started reading about the Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad philosophy and ultimately discovered my events in Canada. One thing led to another and Rick ended up investing in real estate and starting a few businesses on the side while maintaining his job as a principal.
Now Rick and his wife operate a very successful real estate investing company and Rick has entered into an agreement with the Fast Track Group to share his own strategies and formulas for getting rich in uncertain economies. Rob then came to a Get Rich event, hosted by myself and was able to create a $4 million dollar property portfolio in just 24 months. As Rob says “Money is just the scorecard. When you understand the rules of the game - and how the game works - the money will find you!” While he was building his portfolio of properties, Rob also took his health very seriously. The real estate business grew quickly thanks to The Fast Track Group. Today, Sam continues to help run the family businesses, as well as his own rapidly growing portfolio of investments and businesses. Sam quickly learned that his upbringing and non-reliance on a career-based paycheque was the only way to create true financial independence. “Learn about money and leverage, and you will never again worry about your future, your freedom, or your independence. Anyone scared of their financial future NEEDS to understand the proper mindset of those who have created real wealth in the current economy.”
• Constantly fretting over the fine balance of saving, investing and playing with your money. • Dreaming about that long vacation you have always wanted and needed, yet knowing it may never happen at the rate you are going now. Give us 3 hours of your time and we’ll give you powerful
Is it your turn to master the money mindset? strategies that are guaranteed to change your life. Find out how to get out of bad debt and into wise investments. Discover how anyone, no matter how dire their circumstances, can go from rags to riches in 5 years or less. My students and business partners are prime examples of how you can start with nothing and build a very healthy investment portfolio and business in 5 years or less.
Pick up your phone and dial 1-877-742-4236 or visit our website at www.DawsonCreekGetsRich.com or www.FortStJohnGetsRich.com and reserve your seat there. Dial 1-877-742-4236 or visit our website at www.DawsonCreekGetsRich.com or www.FortStJohnGetsRich.com and reserve your seat there. To your newfound success and money mastery! Darren Weeks Founder, The Fast Track Group of Companies PS: The definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!” Your success demands an investment of your time and money... and we are handing you a grand opportunity to improve your odds of success many times over. Back-to-school tips to improve studying, literacy
VICTORIA - As students get ready to head back to school, here are some tips to help them have a successful year and get the most out of their study time: Parents of Primary Students: * Let your children see you read, and set aside time each day for family reading. * Ask your children to read to you while you prepare a meal. * Get your children excited about reading by taking turns reading pages or acting out characters. * Talk to your children about what they read. Ask them questions that require them to read between the lines and think about Set up a daily homework routine. Designate a homework area away from distractions like the television and Internet, and with adequate lighting and supplies. CO-OP CARDLOCK - AIRPORT ROAD FORT ST. what they have just read. This will help improve their reading comprehension. For some tips, check out this video http://www. youtube.com/watch?v=9WqFPWSBG18&feature=player_profilepage * Introduce your children to a variety of literary genres and see which one they most enjoy. * Introduce your children to Aboriginal culture and history through stories and other learning opportunities. * Help your children get a library card and take weekly trips with them to the library. Parents of Intermediate/Middle School Students: * Set up a daily homework routine. Designate a homework area away from distractions like the television and Internet, and with adequate lighting and supplies. * When it is time for your children to do their homework, reinforce strong study habits by also doing yours: balance your chequebook, pay your bills or immerse yourself in a book. * Let your children read comic books in their spare time because comics can encourage positive reading habits and can play a role in improving literacy. * Help your children identify difficult and easy homework tasks and get them to tackle the most difficult subjects first. * Make yourself available to answer questions and offer help, but do not do your children’s homework for them. Wishing our them explain what * Ask your children questions and have they have just read or studied.
* Encourage your children to write stories, poetry and songs. * Keep an assignment calendar on the fridge for quick reference of due dates, exams and how they fit with other activities. Parents of Secondary Students: * Continue with an established homework routine. Make adjustments as needed, such as after-school or weekend time set aside for working on big projects. * Encourage your teenagers to take 20 minutes each night to read over their notes from that day or rewrite them using colours to highlight important information so they retain it longer. * Have your children take regular breaks to help alleviate eye, neck and brain fatigue while studying. This will help them be more productive and retain more of what they read and study. * Encourage your teenagers to explore magazines or appropriate websites on subjects that interest them to keep them reading. Most local libraries carry selections of magazines on a variety of topics, including sports, science, mechanics and politics. * Keep an assignment calendar on the fridge for quick reference of due dates, exams and how they fit with other activities.

Grand opening of Paisley Tree sees strong family roots By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- With a passion for art and her employer going into retirement, starting her own business was just the next step for Caily Oldershaw. When the store Oldershaw previously worked at, Picture It & Naked Canvas, closed down in late June, she opened the only fine art supply store in Dawson Creek, The Paisley Tree: Fine Art Supplies and Gallery. It opened in mid-July but had its grand opening Thursday Sept. 1. Friends, family and members of the local art community came out to congratulate Oldershaw on her new venture, and enjoyed a musical performance by Iyan Bruvold of Folky Strum Strum. “It just seemed like the next logical step because my job was ending and there was going to be no arts supply store in town,” said Oldershaw. Her old employer and owner of Picture It & Naked Canvas, Audrey Nelson, played a big role in the making of the store, not only selling Oldershaw some stock and other equipment
for her store but also gave her business tips. “I really loved working for Audrey, I really liked that job a lot and I didn’t want to go and work for someone else, she’s that person who helps me remember the things that I need to get done in a very loving way,” Oldershaw said. Oldershaw will take on a lot of Nelson’s suppliers, but will also carry new items. “I’m selling consignment things, like handmade local artisan stuff. Like my sister’s hula-hoops and my dad’s beeswax candles, and there are local jewelers that are bringing stuff in. There’s going to be a bunch of pottery in here too,” she said. Her mother, Dori Brawn, will be supplying most of the pottery pieces for sale. She intends to showcase a local artist each month as well. Besides your typical supplies and artistry done by family, Oldershaw carries popular items such as feather earrings and hair extensions. She plans to offer art classes and workshops, herself teaching beginners oil painting and charcoal drawing. She’ll also enlist the help of fellow artist Tabitha Logan

and almost positive Laine Dahlen, a retired art teacher from Northern Lights College, will also be teaching. Besides a business course in high school, and the tips that Nelson gives her, Oldershaw has never had serious instruction on running a business, but has done quite well on her own, and has found the transition and balance between artist and entrepreneur easy. “I just opened and started figuring it out. I really like it, I have both sides of that happening with me like I love crunching numbers and that sort of stuff to. I also want to continue on with my art, a lot, I think it’s probably the most important thing in my life- of course besides my children,” she said “It’s [art] more important than business but I’m trying to incorporate the two things together. I was so stressed out last night because I was so busy trying to get everything done and organized for the opening and also for having stuff for sale at the Sweetwater festival… and I was starting to get overwhelmed and then I stopped and was like, I’m stressed out about painting and ordering art supplies. Wait a minute I love my life, this is so great, this is exactly what I want to be doing with my life,” Oldershaw said. Paisley Tree is located next to Tabitha Logan’s yoga studio. “I talked to Tabatha and she said she had a space that would be available that would be perfect,” Oldershaw said.
