DAWSON CREEK – Thanks to the initiative of a local health-conscious couple, Dawson Creek residents may soon be enjoying access to fresh, locally-grown tree fruit. Crystal Squires and her husband Loiel, both Dawson Creek natives, have started the Dawson Creek Community Orchard project, with cooperation from the Mile 0 Park Society. They are also receiving assistance from
local farmers Kevin and Barb Knoblauch, who have long been advocates for such a project. The Squires are asking the community for hands-on help getting their initiative going, which will involve sourcing fruit-bearing trees which can be grown in this region and planting them, to start, at the Walter Wright Pioneer Village. They hope to begin putting trees in the ground in the Spring of 2016.

COMMUNITY MINDED
DAWSON CREEK - It took two years for Kelly Smeeth’s mother to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and when she was, at the age of 76, Smeeth says it was a relief to finally know what was wrong so the family could move forward and get her the help that she needed. Smeeth’s mother, Coleen Titmus, had endured two years of misdiagnoses, from one doctor who medicated her for a heart problem, and then another who medicated her for late-onset bipolar disease. “They both medicated her until she was in the hospital,” Smeeth said, but it was this hospitalization which allowed the physicians treating her to realize that there was something else going on. Even her mother was relieved at the diagnosis, Smeeth says: “She said to me, ‘I’m not crazy, it’s a disease.” Smeeth, who before helping to care for her mother was a home caregiver for 18 years, including five years of palliative care, says that the most important thing in caring for Alzheimer’s patients is early diagnosis. “If there’s issues, have somebody check into it early, because they can only do things early. Once it’s fairly advanced there’s not a whole lot they can do with it.” This advice is strongly echoed by those who work in the healthcare field. Taylor Council talks modular homes and sewers JULIA LOVETT reporter@northeastnews.ca TAYLOR - Modular homes and sewer systems were the topic of conversation at the Tuesda Sept. 8 meeting at the District of Taylor council meeting. The council heard a presentation from two representatives from Jandel Homes about opportunities for Parcel Z—a 22-acre area of land located on the west side of Taylor to develop the area as a sustainable subdivision community of affordable, attractive, single-wide modular homes. "We are one of the few full service modular homes retailers in western Canada," said Jennifer Hilmer, business development manager with Jandel. She explained that with their homes, it would make the area more affordable to people who are moving to Taylor and surrounding areas for work but do not want to be tied down to a 10-year mortgage. She noted that the company has a proven track record in building sustainable homes and have won awards for best show homes and best commercial structure from the Modular Housing Association-Prairie Provinces. "We have a thorough understanding of the Peace River Regional District (PRRD), we've been selling homes into this region for several years," she said, adding that they liked the market and that the company wanted to explore opportunities in Taylor.
Hilmer noted that there would be an appeal because the home ownership is attainable, there would be private and spacious landscaped yards and freedom from sharing common walls like apartments or condominiums. While she and Rolf Williamson, Operations Manager, made their presentation, the council had some concerns regarding the plans. "Right now, we're losing people out of the community, they want to stay but they want a bigger house and that's not available here. So one of my visions for Parcel Z is that we would build houses that have foundations or basements," said Brent Taillefer, councillor. "That five bedroom house for the expanding families and those people because we already have that (single level homes), the entry level in Taylor, and while we need that position, we also need the next step for people so they're not having to leave Taylor," he added. Williamson explained that the company can do multisection homes as well but Taillefer said he still has other visions for the space. "What I envision is people that are already here that need or want a bigger house to be able to move to that and then people can fill their houses that are starting out," he responded. According to the council, they will be taking the proposal under consideration and will keep Jandel apprised of any further development although it is for sale to an open market, however Jandel can put in an offer. Along with the Parcel Z development opportunity, comes phase two of the Pine Ave., East sewer replacement that has just received funding under the New Building Canada Fund-Small Communities Fund (NBCF-SCF). They have been approved for a maximum of $398,666 and will begin phase two next year. The total cost of phase two however, will exceed $600,000. The line in question is the main sewer line in the town which runs from the centre of the community and takes effluent from the west side to the

Should I fully shut down my computer each day or just let it run all the time? This question has been around for years with varying answers. Here’s my thoughts on whether to shut down your computer or leave it running: If your computer is a tower or desktop style computer, I recommend shutting down the computer at the end of your workday. Here at Computer Emporium we shut down all computers at the end of each day. There are 24 hours in a day, our store is open 9 hours each day. We are saving electricity, and wear and tear on the computer and the monitor for 15 hours each day. All electronics equipment wears out eventually, especially any moving parts like the fans inside a computer.

If your computer is a laptop, I like to recommend simply shutting the lid and letting it go to sleep or hibernation. When a laptop goes to sleep it shuts down all the fans and the hard drives and consumes very little power. When you open the lid of your laptop it is ready to go much faster than if you did a full shutdown each time. About once a week I like to perform a full shutdown of my laptop just to clear out any remnant files that might be slowing down my computer. In summary if it’s a tower style computer, YES. If it’s a laptop, NO.

Head Coach Flying away from Flyers volved in my hockey growing up," said Dicaire. He explained that he wanted to be able to show her tricks and help her learn the basics just as his parents showed him. Dicaire said that being with the Flyers helped hone his coaching skills and because of his leadership, he led the team to a victory in March when, for the first time in almost 60 years, the Flyers won the 2014-2015 BC Hockey Senior AA Coy Cup championship. Dicaire explained that although he will miss the team, it was the right move made at the right time. "Walking away from the Flyers, it was a tough decision, I mean I enjoyed being around the guys and I enjoyed teaching and everything but my thoughts are if I'm not there 100 per cent of the time, you know, to give a full effort, it's not really fair to the guys to come in and teach one thing and then have somebody else there teaching them something else," he added.

A hope for ALR exclusion Dear Editor,
An interesting notice is posted in Alaska Highway News August 21 on page B6. It announces intent to exclude the NW quarter of section 27 of township 83 from the ALR. The new plan for this land is not mentioned so I tried the contact given: Ric Peterson Developments of #207 10139 100 St. in Ft. St. John, V1J 3Y6. Won’t be in, but agent’s Alberta phone number might help. Doesn’t ring. So now I am hoping the plan is not for more emissions into our air traffic control zone to increase the disruption, costs, risks, environmental foot print, and make it ever more difficult to accurately forecast our aviation weather. I can hope for that. G.N. Thompson Ft. St. John, BC
Honouring Terry Fox with a ban on wood smoke The Editor,
September – Terry Fox Run – and Cancer have been a triad for many years throughout the world and this also gave Port Coquitlam worldwide exposure, as his hometown. Perhaps its time for Port Coquitlam’s Leaders to honour Terry by eliminating cancer enhancing air pollutants from its neighbourhoods! As the City already has adopted the purpose of the Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot Tour, (which is, that every person has the right to live in a clean environment) this could be fairly easy and most everyone would welcome a Clean Air Bylaw and would support City on this policy. Because most people have become aware that breathing clean air does matter. Especially those who had to breathe wood smoke polluted air from this summer’s wild fires and with the approaching fall and winter season most people are not looking forward being bombarded with smoke emissions from neighbouring fireplaces. Port Coquitlam could be the first municipality on the Lower Mainland to initiate a Bylaw that makes it illegal to pollute neighbourhood air through wood smoke or any other cancer causing smoke. And implementing such Law would be a perfect way to come many steps closer to help fulfilling Terry’s Dream to stamp out cancer. Brie Oishi Port Coquitlam

U-17 details Continued from Page B3. iconic NHL guys . . . that was the fabric of our communities, that brought this alive for us, and hockey as such an important component,” said Dale Bumstead, mayor of Dawson Creek. “So when this opportunity to host a world event in our communities, players from all over the world, and for us to be able to showcase the volunteers, the sponsors, the calibre of our communities, in terms of what we can do, and to be able to demonstrate that, I believe is just an unbelievable opportunity.” TransCanada Corporation was announced as the first main sponsor, as the title sponsor of the volunteer program for the event. According to a Hockey Canada press release the event will likely utilize 300 volunteers between the two host cities. “Nothing brings together a community quite like hockey and cheering for Canadian athletes,” a representative of TransCanada said. “At TransCanada we believe it is our responsibility as a good neighbour to support local events like this. We understand the benefits this event will bring to Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and surrounding communities, as well as the opportunity to profile B.C.’s northern communities to the rest of Canada. TransCanada is a proud member of the northern B.C. community, with more than 12 billion dollars in proposed natural gas pipeline projects in northern B.C., we want to help generate long term economic opportunities for communities throughout the area.” The 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge brings together the top players from around the world born in 1999 or later, and is the first step for many players before moving on to national teams and also the NHL. DC RCMP warn hunters STACY THOMAS news@northeastnews.ca DAWSON CREEK - Dawson Creek RCMP have issued a reminder to the public to be aware of B.C.’s hunting regulations, after illegal hunters abandoned a dead bull elk on a farmer’s land on September 4. A farmer had observed individuals trespassing on his property, using a vehicle to hunt elk, and when he attempted to confront them verbally, they drove away at high speed. The bull elk was found when a search of the field was completed. RCMP and the BC Conservation office were involved in the search for the suspects, and Conservation is continuing the search, according Photo Credit MetroCreativeto Sgt. Ed Reinink Connection.com of Dawson Creek RCMP. Police stress that hunting cultivated land without permission can result in a fine of $230.00 under Section 39 of the BC Wildlife Act. Additional criminal code charges and wildlife charges can also be brought against individuals if they are found using firearms on roadways. Further, individuals causing damage to crops by driving vehicles through them are susceptible to mischief charges under the criminal code. Hunters are encouraged by RCMP to please respect the rights of property owners and to seek permission before hunting on private land. Any persons with information about this incident are

Orchard Continued from Front. Both vegans who subsist mainly on a diet of raw food, the Squires eat mostly fruits and vegetables, and were considering a move to the Okanagan, where a fresh food is plentiful and varied. A conversation with the Knoblauchs convinced them to stay and plant trees closer to home. “We’re passionate about health, we’re really into eating lots of raw foods,” said Crystal. “I wondered, why aren’t there any fruit trees in Dawson? It would be really cool if there were fruit trees in Dawson.” Contrary to popular belief, Dawson Creek is in hardiness zone 2b, which allows for a wide range of fruit and berry cultivation, such as various types of pears, plums, apricots, apples and nuts. Even a type of pine nut, expensive to buy in stores, can be grown in this zone, Loiel pointed out. Growing some plants suited to zone 3 is also suitable in sheltered areas, he said. The Squires have created a Facebook page and have put out a call for help, with the aim of establishing a formal group or society which will maintain and care for the trees after they’ve been
planted, and once that group is created, it will go forward with fundraising efforts around the community; “before we start fundraising we want to make sure we have people interested,” said Crystal. Bert Goulet, general manager of the Mile 0 Park Society, said the trees will be a welcome addition to the Village. “Our vision for the Park here is to have a real living working village, and having fruit that people can pick adds colour,” he said. “We’d like to maybe someday have a community garden here, and maybe teach students how to grow food, which is important, and fruit trees would add to that.” For more information about the Dawson Creek Community Orchard project, visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ dcorchard?fref=ts, or search for “Dawson Creek Community Orchard” in Facebook.

SEPTEMBER 20 -26
Theme: Wildland Fire
Wildland fire is a powerful natural force.
Fire has shaped Canada’s forests, prairies and parklands for countless generations, and brings healthy renewal to diverse ecosystems. But some fires can have a devastating impact on public safety and property.
During National Forest Week, Canadians are invited to learn more about Canada’s forest heritage and to raise awareness about this valuable and renewable resource. Forests are fundamental to our economy, culture, traditions and history – and to our future. Communities, families and individuals depend on forests for their livelihood and way of life.
You can make a difference! – identify all the things at home or school that are made of wood – learn about organizations that demonstrate sustainable forest management – tour a forest sector industry or processing site – learn about the prevention of forest fires
History Established circa 1920 as Forest Fire Prevention Week, the intention was to encourage greater public awareness towards Canada’s forests. At the time, there was no apparent shortage of trees for industrial expansion – the greatest threat came from forest fires, due mainly to human causes. Since then National Forest Week, as it was renamed in 1967, has evolved to encompass the many and varied human and environmental aspects of Canada’s forest resources – past, present and future. Although special activities are promoted across Canada, National Forest Week remains first and foremost a challenge to individual Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource. National Forest Week is observed annually during the last full week of September, Sunday through Saturday. National Tree Day is observed on the Wednesday of National Forest Week.
How to Participate in National Forest Week – arrange a tree planting: www.treecanada.ca – take a walk in woods nearby and get to know your forest
– care for a newly planted or neglected tree, and study its species
Celebrate National Forest Week September 20 - 26, 2015
It’s National Forest Week, a time for all Canadians to celebrate our forests. Plant a tree, tour a local mill or take a walk in the woods – these are just a few ways you can take part in National Forest Week. For a list of events happening around the province, check out our website: www.bcnfw.ca or find us on Facebook: BC’s National Forest Week

Coach moves on from hockey Continued from Page B5 Dicaire, who had a professional hockey career playing in the Tampa Bay farm team system in the American Hockey Association (AHL), returned to Fort St. John in 2006, to play on the Flyers team. He said that after his body wouldn’t allow him to do the things it once could, the player threw his name into the proverbial ring, or rink as the case may be, in order to be considered for the position of coach. He said that during his tenure with the group, it taught him patience and he enjoyed the team because they were a younger crowd between the ages of 21-34. Although it could be challenging at times because of the players' life commitments he said it was a great experience and looks forward to the next phase of his life. "It's disappointing to see him go but I completely understand, I know how people's lives and worlds change and that (moving on), you know, is part of it," said Paul van Nostrand, president of the Fort St. John Flyers Hockey Club. The team is a Fort St. John institution, having been started in 1958. Van Nostrand explained that the age group, which is 21 years and over, have given sports fans plenty of exciting action in its 57 year long history. He said that now they are without a coach they are looking for someone to fill the gap and are hoping that they will find one at the end of the month. "Ideally, we certainly want someone who's familiar with senior hockey, either has played it or involved in one way or another with senior hockey, that would be ideal. We do have a fairly young team, so someone who can relate to younger players would be certainly on our wish list," van Nostrand said. Anyone wishing to apply for the position can contact Lee Hartman, the club's general manager at 250-261-9865.

ASBC workshops Continued from Front. Services for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. (ASBC), is in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John this week giving workshops for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. She says workshops such as hers, and more education about the early signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, are vital so family members can get their loved ones diagnosed early. “We try really hard to educate the general public on, what does this look like? What are some of the things that you’re noticing with your family members, and getting that diagnosis so we can move forward and put plans in place, to protect that person with dementia and help provide them with a better quality of life,” said Hildebrand. Early signals of dementia or Alzheimer’s include memory loss, which can be confused with the normal aging process, but Hildebrand says it goes much deeper than that. “You or I might lose our keys, that’s normal memory loss,” she said. “But the problem is we can retrace our steps, and a person who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, they can’t retrace their steps, so they’re misplacing objects and they might not be putting things away in their right spots.” Further, judgement and decision making skills begin to fade. “Once in a while, you or I in our life are going to make a decision, and think that it seemed like a good idea at the time, but maybe it wasn’t a good solution,” said Hildebrand. “But we also learn from that and we learn from our mistakes and we move forward, and a person who is suffering from even early stage dementia or early stage Alzheimer’s disease . . . they might be making questionable financial decisions, giving money away, to the point where they’ve got nothing left. They are at a greater risk for financial abuse where people are calling them and wanting them to send money and those kinds of things.” Hildebrand also says that it is very important to diagnose early so that the patient can get his or her official paperwork in order and appoint trusted family members or friends as managers of their affairs. Otherwise, a committeeship may need to be appointed once the individual can no longer make important decisions, which is a costly option. There are various programs including home care, respite and residential care available to Alzheimer’s patients, offered by the ASBC and Northern Health. However it is stressed again and again by health care providers that the health of the home caregiver is equally as important as the patient’s and is often overlooked. “One of the biggest reasons that a person with dementia transfers into care before they’re ready is because the health of the caregiver is at risk, or the caregiver’s passed away because they’ve neglected their own health,” said Hildebrand. “If you neglect yourself, not only are you going to be facing some real health issues yourself, but then what is the quality of care that you’re actually giving this person when you’re so worn out that you have nothing left

September 17, 2015 to give?” Health issues for the caregiver are not only physical but mental, as the person deals with their changing role to the patient, and the frustration and grief that are an inevitable part of the disease. Smeeth’s father, who was in his eighties when he was the main carer for Coleen, dealt with this on a daily basis. “He didn’t get that she wasn’t connecting the dots,” Smeeth said. “He would get mad at her. But he dealt with her 24/7. You’re not only dealing with the parent who has Alzheimer’s, you’re dealing with the other parent who is the 24/7 caregiver who is frustrated and tired and overwhelmed . . . It’s a lot of work, it’s a lot of heartache.” Her advice to those who have a loved one who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia? Love, she says. “Make sure they have all the patience and love and kindness that you can give them, because those dots are starting to fade,” Smeeth said. “Take the moments and run with them, and if they don’t rememPhoto Credit Submitted ber who you Kelly Smeeth (right) and her mother Coleen Titmus are, it doesn’t It in 2014, the year before Titmus passed away after matter. her “seven year journey” with Alzheimer’s disease. doesn’t matter. That’s something I had to keep telling my dad—she recognizes you as someone she loves, as someone that’s hers, that has to be enough, cause that’s all she’s got.” On September 17 a Transitions along the Dementia Journey talk will take place at 1:30 at Northern Lights College, room 1338 in Dawson Creek. Two workshops will take place in Fort St. John on September 18: Life in Residential Care at 1 p.m. at Fort St. John Hospital, and Self Care for Caregivers at 9:30 a.m. To register, call 1-800-886-6946 or e-mail thildebrand@ alzheimerbc.org.
