Dawson Creek community supports Take Back the Night By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- Dark clouds and a constant downpour of rain, didn’t stop community supporters from taking back the night. The South Peace Community Resource Society’s Community Awareness Committee organized Take Back the Night, a march through the downtown core and Kin Park to raise awareness for domestic violence last Thursday, Sept. 15. Sign carrying attendees started their march at the senior’s hall at 6:30 p.m. and ended in Kin Park for a free BBQ. Though the weather was bad, organizers were thrilled with the large turnout. They estimate nearly 100 people came out to show support. “We were worried, honestly,” said committee member Karen Mitton. “I am stoked at how many people turned out tonight. I saw the sky and I thought really? It hasn’t rained in three weeks and the one night we have an outdoor event…I was so excited to see how many people were waiting at the senior’s hall. It was such a huge outpouring of community spirit, it really inspires me. This turnout, according to a woman on our committee whose been doing this for 15 years, she says she doesn’t think we’ve had a turnout like this ever,” she said. The event started in Brussels Belgium in 1976 and since then has generated support worldwide. Not only does the event raise awareness, but also dispels apathetic views that violence doesn’t happen in the community. “I’ve certainly heard some women say there are certain places downtown or even in the parks that they won’t walk at night, it’s not safe…Tonight we’re just supporting the awareness of the fact that domestic violence, and violence in all its forms, not just the physical violence that’s punishable by law, but all other forms of violence including: verbal, spiritual, financial, and any other form of violence. It occurs right here in this community and we’re all here tonight to take this stand and to take back this night,” Mitton said. The march that used to be a women only event formally invited men to par-
ticipate in 2009, and last Thursday saw many men in the community support the cause. “That’s what the Community Awareness Committee is about, bringing the community together for a common goal. The fact that we have men and boys here supporting this, that used to be a women only event, is fantastic,” said Mitton. Along with free BBQ, drinks, and snacks, attendees were entertained by family roots/rock band, Revolution Sonics, along with the Northern Lights Drummers who performed a Cree Ojibway healing song. Mitton says the Mizpah Transition House, a shelter for women experiencing domestic violence and personal crisis, receives tremendous support from the community and considering the turnout on Friday, this is a cause the community is committed to. “We have such an outpouring of

donations to the transition house… it’s something the community really believes in. Thank you to the people and businesses who donated their time and effort and talent, and sometimes prizes to make this event a success, it
doesn’t come together all by itself, it doesn’t come together with 10 people meeting around a table, it really took a community to make this happen,” Mitton said.

Klukas brings abstract expression in new exhibit at D.C. gallery By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- The Dawson Creek Art Gallery’s latest exhibit is the work of one woman’s expression. Carrie Klukas was invited to have a show by the gallery’s past director, and has been working a year and a half on her 38 abstract expressionism pieces. Although from Grand Prairie Klukas is a prominent member of the Dawson Creek art community she has juried three local art exhibits, taught at the gallery and is the visual arts coordinator for a few institutions in town. Klukas admires the work

of her students and great artists like Joseph Turner and Mark Rothko, but developed her own style. “Although I don’t paint like Rothko I certainly believe in the spiritual content abstract expressionism. I do feel that there is something that you can get from the pieces...I always admire other people’s abilities, and stuff that there doing. I find that we all have our own unique voice, and if we try to copy somebody elses it’s usually a sad duplicate. It’s always best to do your own thing,” she said. Her mother introduced her to art at a young age. By taking art classes in high school Klukas found she was good at it, and now considers painting essential to her happiness. “For me, I realized a few years ago that if I’m not creating I get very depressed, so it’s definitely kind of a life line for me really,” Klukas said. Though her parents encouraged her creativity, it was not seen as an appropriate career choice, which lead her to becoming an interior designer. “It’s OK to be creative as long as you can make a living out of it,” Klukas mimicked her parent’s sentiment. In the early 90s Klukas attended the Alberta College of Art and Design, and since graduating has worked developing her style. “It probably took about 10 years after I left school to come up with this style. It came to me gradually...This style is something that just happened, this style wasn’t taught. Sometimes things have to perk a bit,” she said. To make her pieces, Klukas layers acrylic paint and sands it back and repeats the process. She says she uses a lot of sandpaper and sometimes will use varnish as well. “It’s a very seductive surface because it gives the allusion of a lot of texture, it’s actually completely smooth,” Klukas said. Critics of abstract expressionism may believe that the style requires very little skill, but according to Klukas many abstract artists have formal training. “It was funny, the last symposium that the Artists of the Peace had we were supposed to draw something, and all 15 people kept running over to me, and “ah she can draw,” she said. Klukas’ show entitled, “Just Breathe,” is more colourful than
Page 3
what she’s done in the past. She’s also chosen to title her pieces, which is traditionally not done in abstract work. “My work a lot of times people will see stuff in it, I will see stuff in it. Which prompts me to title. That doesn’t mean that that’s what it is, it can be whatever you see. It doesn’t have to be hung that way, it can be hung whichever way you want it to be hung,” she said. “Just Breathe” comes from Klukas’ method of not planning her artwork, and “just going with it.” She won’t even extenuate objects she finds early on in her paintings, to her, it would look too contrived. “Being in the moment. Allowing yourself to be lead. When I get all bogged down in the mind, then I start to produce stuff basically. If you just be in the zone, it comes. It comes down to just breathe, just breathe,” she said. “I think there’s something about abstract work that can hold you, it’s always changing, there’s an interest to it, and certainly there are things out there that look very simple, I defy anybody to try and do it...lucky on my part that they turn out the way they do.”

Debate still lingers on connection plan By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN - Council endorsed three new subdivisions, but controversy still lingers between developers on how and if they will be connected. Sunset Ridge, West Ridge and Garrison Landing were approved in principle. They are now in the second phase of planning, the Detailed Engineering and Design phase, said Horacio Galanti, director of planning and engineering for the city. The challenge lies between Sunset Ridge and West Ridge. A narrow strip of land that sits under the Peace River Regional District separates the two — and developers have mixed visions on how the connection will play out. There are three options on how to connect that were presented to council and the public as a means to keep everyone “in the loop,” on Sept. 12 The connection, a full road with all utilities, is a “highly desir-
able” opportunity, but not necessary. “As a technical staff we highly recommend a connection to simplify…water distribution and sewer distribution on those two subdivisions,” said Galanti. Option A, supported by the West Ridge developer David Toews and two land owners, would like to see straight North and South access points. Kim Henry and Tracey Bloor own land between the two proposed developments and were initially opposed to a road cutting through their properties, with the exception of Option A. They are thinking of developing their properties and would want to “maximize that potential,” which Option B would hinder. Horacio Galanti, director of planning and engineering also advocates this alternative. “My support…is my recommendation on Option A, which is the straight alignment, because of technical reasons: proper fire protection, easy pedestrian, vehicle movements.” Project manager of Sunset Ridge, Ron Brar, supports Option B; a connection that would meander through the

A diagram that shows the different options for connection. property. “We are able to provide connectivity to the North of our development…it is not going to provide a true ‘straight’ road,” read a letter he sent to the city. However it added, “It proved more direct connection that will allow traffic and pedestrians to navigate.” Also, Option A would “seriously hamper” higher-end homes and land value in the area, according to Brar, some of which were already being looked at by potential buyers. The last resort is Option C, where properties would remain untouched. Upon its final approval, the subdivision would be built in the northwest quadrant of the city over a span of 10 to 15 years. Neighbourhood Structure Plans is a result of the Official ® Community Plan, and the first steps to creating the subdiviRadio Frequency Treatment sions. Garrison Landing is already moving steadily into the Detailed Engineering and Design phase with engineering plans already received by the city. Once that phase is approved the execution of the subdiviBody Contouring sion begins. How long it will take for Sunset Ridge and Facial Sculpting West Ridge to begin that level Skin Tightening depends on how the developers and the city will come to an agreement on the option to connect. “Now it’s a matter of calling the developers to sit down and talk about pros and cons of Renewal of Body & Spirit different options. It’s a matter of having a conversation with 250-785-0263 the developers to see if we www.serenityspabc.com can reach an agreement,” said Galanti.

D.C introduces new fund to cut pollutants By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- The Dawson Creek Carbon Fund is a new initiative launched by the City aimed at cutting back on the greenhouse gases they produce annually. The City will give $100 for every tonne of carbon emissions they generate to the fund. The Carbon Fund should receive a sizable amount from the City as they emitted approximately 3,600 tonnes of greenhouse gases in 2010, if they produced the same amount in 2011 the fund would secure $360,000. The money the fund is granted will go towards making municipal buildings and vehicles more energy efficient, in hopes of reducing operating costs and reducing the City’s carbon footprint. The fund is apart of the City’s initiative to make their operations carbon neutral by 2012. The Dawson Creek RCMP Foundation presented a cheque for $8131.00 to the Words on Wheels bus, a bus that travels throughout the South Peace Region. The bus supports early childhood learning by providing books and toys for children and resources for parents. Gloria Cleve, the Early Learning Project Manager, received the cheque that will be spent on books, backpacks, and other resources.

Dawson Creek is in for a unique event on October 1 as the first annual Photo Walk will be taking place downtown from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This event is being co-organized by Fort St. John’s Kyle Thomas (@kylewith on Twitter) to coincide with the fourth annual Worldwide Photo Walk. This event is to get anyone from the point n’ shoot photographers to the ones with Nikon cameras around their necks. The goal of the event is to get people to talk about photography. With getting people together, they can talk about their troubles and success with their camera and also get to meet some of the other photographers that are in their community. The Facebook event page has sixteen people already marked down for their attendance with a possible twenty more. According to the organizers, a photo walk is a social photography event where photographers get together (usually in a downtown area or trendy section of town) to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun with other photographers. So mark your calendar for the event happening on Saturday, October 1 in Dawson Creek. You can also visit http://worldwidephotowalk.com/faq for more information and maybe you will get motivated to organize a photo walk in your community.
Canada Starts Here: a plan for every British Columbian
By Jill Earl NORTHEAST B.C. - Premier Christy Clark announced a significant investment into the B.C. job market with a contribution of $50 million towards the Road Rail Utility Corridor project on Wrigley Island. CN Rail is investing $30 million into the project as well. The investment is the first stage of Canada Starts Here, an initiative that will give $300 million to projects supporting job growth. The announcement was made Monday morning on the Port of Prince Rupert with Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell and Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Blair Lekstrom. Clark plans on investing in the infrastructure of Port of Prince Rupert, so that the province can readily meet the demands of the growing Asian market. Clark sees opportunity in the western-most port city in North American, as it is two-to-three days closer to Asia then any other city on the North American continent. “There is no better place in Canada to talk about our future, to talk about the future of this country than here on the shores of Prince Rupert…we are on the pacific edge of this country…We are facing Asia, we are facing the future of the world and of Canada, and I am optimistic of our future…Our location and geography are an incredible asset. That’s just one part of what makes British Columbia so great and what positions us to take advantage of this
opportunity,” Clark said. Canada Starts Here rests on three pillars Clark says: supporting a private economy, good infrastructure, and knowledge of emerging markets and producing what they need. In the press conference, Don Krusel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Port of Prince Rupert, said that the infrastructure would open up approximately 1000 acres of prime waterfront industrial land, expanding the port 6 times its current size. The expansion would mean 70-100 million tonnes of capacity for the port, and more jobs in the area. “Once all those terminals are up and operating, we’ll add about 1500 full time well paying jobs in this community alone,” Krusel said. This number is in addition to the 576 jobs Clark predicts construction will create. Bell and Krusel both spoke to the growing Asia pacific market, and how British Columbia could benefit being the shortest land-sea link. “So far this year, B.C.’s exports are about 18.7 billion dollars, that’s up 2.2 billion over last year…that challenges the trends across North American right... We’re making a difference and it’s putting people back to work in this province…So far this year, B.C. sent 8.2 billon dollars worth of goods to Asia. That’s up 29% over last year,” Bell said.
“In the next ten to 20 years we are going to witness the largest migration of people in the history of man kind. It’s estimated that over 350 million Chinese will move from their rural agricultural land and move into the major cities of China…” said Krusel. The migration that Krusel says will look like 35 cities the size of New York City, along with the rising Chinese middle class will put a heavy demand on resources that Clark intends on meeting. “This means that we can meet the increasing demands for coal and other goods in the Asia Pacific market, and this is so critic because jobs don’t just depend on how much we can produce here in British Columbia, they also depend on being able to get our goods out of British Columbia to the markets that want them,” Clark said. Clark predicts the investment will open up the job markets in communities all across the province, increasing the demands for coal, lumber, and wheat. “It’s plan for our entire province, this is not a plan for one party, it’s not a plan for one city, it’s not a plan for one group vs. another, it’s a plan for every British Columbian no matter where they live…if we can come together united and recognize that if we are united…our province will be better off,” she said. Clark will announce full details of the B.C. job plan later this week.

Fire chief Fred Burrows speaks to council about the fire department’s role in medical aid response at city council on Sept. 12.
Fire Department taking on more than necessary? By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN - The City raised concerns over the fire department taking calls, at “considerable costs,” that they say the B.C. Ambulance Service should be answering. Fire chief Fred Burrows said his department is spending most of their time responding to medical aid by providing basic life support until proper transportation arrives. Forty eight per cent of calls received this year from January to July were medical-related. “The number of calls we have done have totally escalated from what the anticipated average in the past,” said Burrows during council. In 2009, an administration report noted the fire department attended to 25 requests for service. Last year it jumped to 99 requests where the fire department stepped in because ambulance service had all its resources committed and could not respond. City manager Dianne Hunter said that the BCAS should be the sole-responders. In September 2009 BCAS reaffirmed their responsibility as the first-responder and the fire department as the last resort to medical aid incidences, according to a council report. “We are responding on a level we cannot sustain…If we are not in the ambulance service and we are not getting paid, then we will not do it,” said Hunter during council. “B.C. ambulance is not able to provide service so they call the fire department. Tax payers money should be going to fire services,” said Hunter. “Right now we are providing assistance without recognition.” However, Michael Michalko, executive director of BCAS said, “In November 2010, in consultation with the fire chief, the department advanced their first responder status to include all first responder calls regardless if the ambulance unit was available or in the area.” He added that first responders act on a voluntary basis. “They made the decision to increase their response capability.” Michalko said the decision on what level a fire department wants to participate was up to the municipality, not the BCAS. Prior to 2010, Michalko said the Fire Department was a level three responder, meaning they only attended medical aid when

NEAT and Encana team up for NLC trees By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- The Northern Environmental Action Team teamed up with Encana, on Thursday Sept. 15 for TreeTember. The public was invited to plant trees along 8th St. on Northern Lights College’s eastern property. One hundred Blue Spruce trees were provided by Encana, 50 to plant and 50 to give away. Tree planters could enter to win a tree, by bringing a non-perishable food item to be donated to the food bank to be entered into the raffle. Encana provided the food for a BBQ by donation. Members of NLC’s student body attended, as well as the Grade 8 and 9 class of Dawson Creek Secondary School’s central campus. “It’s taking the carbon dioxide out so we don’t have global warming. I think it’s important keeping oxygen clean for future generations,” said Josh Miedema, 14. Grade 8 teacher Shaun Henry decided to take his class to the event. “I thought it was important for my student’s to gain awareness of what’s happening in terms of environmental

stewardship in our community, and generally to be involved in their own community, I feel like it’s a good part of their education,” Henry said. Henry plans on assigning his class a project where his students plan their own environmental stewardship activity. His class did a scavenger hunt at the event based on things they learned that day, they also painted 25 bird houses Henry built himself that will hang in trees at the college and at the hospital. “I think there’s a lot of different activities that NEAT does and I hope to get my students out to more of them. Having them out in the community and learning hands-on and just doing and being involved in these things even if they aren’t the most enthusiastic about it to start eventually they get involved and take something out of it,” Henry said. NEAT program coordinator Karen Mason-Bennett said the event was aimed at bringing nature and people together and increasing peoples appreciation for nature. MasonBennett was pleased with the turnout. “We’ve opened it up to anybody at the college, it is a public event. We’ve had a steady trickle of people in and out of the college, we’ve had an impressive amount of food come in actually, more then I was anticipating. We definitely have seen quite a few people in and around and a few people rubber necking as they drive by, which is nice,” she said. NLC visual art student Jessie Rintoul, 17, was happy to help a good cause and believes she will look back fondly on her volunteering experience. “Now when we’re driving down the street and see the trees, we’ll remember and always know that we played a part,” Rintoul said. NLC removed part of the fencing that was outlining the perimeter of the school to make room for the trees. Facility worker, Jack Napier, believes the trees will be more visually appealing for the property. “It’s nice to see the trees being planted. The fence looked awful, the trees are a good alternative. It’s going to look a heck of a lot better,” he said.

Energy Expo in Fort St. John
By Kyla Corpuz FORT ST. JOHN - The second annual Energy Expo kicked off in Fort St. John on Sept. 21. The two-day exhibit hosted by Energy Services BC and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers is aimed to open up opportunities for local business and the natural gas sector to connect. The trade fair provides a forum of information on procurement, insight to health, safety and environment requirements and industry operations that both sides can engage in. “As an industry, we recognize that we need a competent local competitive service sector that benefits the industry and communities which we offer,” said manager of B.C. operations for CAPP Steve Dunk. “Our industry is forecasting growth in production and that growth is mostly through unconventional gas,” he said. According to Statistics Canada, mining, oil and gas extraction is the biggest employer in the Northeast region. “Goods-producing industries account for a larger share of total employment in Northeast than in any other region.” Thirty-nine per cent of the region was employed in the good sector in 2008 compared to 22 per cent for all of B.C. The two main areas that service this industry are the Fort St. John and Dawson Creek area and Fort Nelson, said Dunk. “That’s why we’re holding it in Fort St. John because that’s one of the centers for the local services.” Fifty-five booths are set up at the exhibition and is anticipated to fill it’s seats with CAPP members, producing companies and suppliers as well as local sectors. “The concept is that we have those booths so that people with local businesses can talk to our members, our major suppliers and find out how to bid on work, what kind of insurance requirements and safety training they need— that kind of stuff,” said Dunk. “It’s really to share information on how you’re business can support our business,” he added. Councillor Lori Ackerman said the Energy Expo is an opportunity for local businesses to market themselves to the explorers and producers group and network amongst each other. Ackerman said last year’s turnout was “very good,” and is an indicator as to why it’s being repeated. The expo is at the Pomeroy Hotel and ends on Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.

20 individuals throughout the region. She said she wanted it to be an event to motivate others as well. NENAS has been around for over 20 years assisting with training, employment and funding various groups to build relationships with others, said Sam. “We’re supporting people in their dreams and moving them forward.” Gerry Attachie, former chief of Doig River First Nations and currently sits on the board of directors at NENAS, said he was proud of the turnout. “We came a long ways in the last few years,” said Attachie. “We start fighting together for our children.” But despite that, he added: “I would like to see more unity.” Recipient of the Special Elder Award, Maisie Metecheah, shared the same view during her acceptance speech. “Our tradition was unity — but now, people are here and there,” she said as she plotted her hands in different directions. But that night, Norman Napolean, from the Saulteau First Nations said there was a “good mixture” of all the bands gathered together. “There’s quite a range of people here,” he said. “It’s quite common when there’s a big gathering to have all the bands come out.” The event brought down a member from the Kaska First Nations in the Yukon, said Attachie. The evening was hosted by comedian, Don Burnstick, who kept laughs rolling throughout the night and later in the evening for a comedy show. Burnstick is a Cree from Alexander First Nations outside of Edmonton, Alta. Local acts also took the stage: Doig River Drummers opened up the gala, Spirit of the Peace Powwow dancers performed a traditional dance followed by local singer, Shawna Lizotte. It was a full-house with nearly 400 seats filled. The categories of awards recognized education achievements and life advancements from Aboriginal youth and elders. Kathi Dickie, urban representative at NENAS, took home the Aboriginal of the Year Award.

Fire dept. took on role as first responders: BCAS Story continued from Page 9.
the BCAS were significantly delayed or it was a case of a motor vehicle accident. There are three ambulance cars servicing the vast area and the recruitment and retention of part-time paramedics are slowly de-
clining, according to an administrative report. “[Part-time] employees are the back bone of the ambulance service in smaller communities…but they are also the staffing pool used to fill full time vacancies in the Province,” read the report. Michalko said even though it is difficult to keep staff on board because of the competitive industry in the region, he doesn’t consider his staffing to be low with four full-time staff and 12 parttime — but noted BCAS is always looking for candidates. Burrows said in a phone interview that despite his department receiving a higher volume of non-fire related calls, there hasn’t been an incident where their servicing clashed between attending fire and medical requests.
But Hunter firmly believes the fire department respond only to fire-related calls. “The equipment we purchased is meant for fire fighting “The fact that we’re providing this service to B.C. Ambulance Service takes away from all of that, and it takes it away at considerable costs.” The city asked council to address this issue with BCAS during the next Union of British Columbia Municipalities conference in Vancouver later this month. “The greater issue is dealing with the B.C. Ambulance Service to the point where they can manage to have more people, more personnel, more equipment on the road so it doesn’t result in so many call outs to local fire departments,” said Mayor Bruce Lantz.

In his two-hour one-man show, Red Green creator and actor, Steve Smith, delivered life lessons with witty anecdotes fans have come to love and expect. In true Red Green fashion, Smith talked about the challenges of love and marriage, communicating with women, being Canadian, cars, being a handyman and getting older. “It’s not exactly Possum Lodge, but we’ll try to make it work,” said Smith, who would not give the exact location of the lodge but offered an approximate guess. “The real Possum Lodge is in Ontario, about 148 beer stores north of Toronto,” he said. Before continuing much further into his ranting of the male psyche, he had the entire audience say the man’s prayer and stand up to take the Possum Lodge oath - which Smith believes is Latin. The translation being, “If all else fails, roll over and play dead.” The Red Green Show started its first season in 1991 and ended in 2006, in its 15th season. The show inspired books, box sets, and a full-length feature film, and now to satisfy adorning fans, Red is on tour. The tour visits over 80 stops across Canada and the United States, many of them being sold out. Over the years, the show has amassed a large following evident by its 431, 587 “Likes” on Facebook, and over 120,000 Possum Lodge card-carrying members. “Most of whom share the same DNA I believe,” Smith laughed. Young fans also attended on Tuesday, Smith alluded that their presence at the show was some sort of punishment from their parents. He offers advice to those adolescence regarding tattoos and piercings. “Try to end life with as many holes as you started with,” he said. He reminisced over old projects that he’s done including turning a stove into a reclining chair, and tapping feed troughs together to make a slide. He also described projects that fans had done and

shared with him, like fans that put a possum-shaped coat hanger on the front of their Chevrolet Chevette and duct tapped winter gloves on the trunk so their hands wouldn’t get cold in case they had to push it. Smith offered handyman tips, like “Never get between electricity and where it wants to go.” He described a picture of what the world would be like with no women: largely unshaven with no bathroom doors and taking out the garbage would be more work Jill Earl photo then getting used to the smell. He concluded the show with the Handyman’s Prayer, a parody of the Lord’s Prayer. The show was filled with one-liners and the twisted wit and wisdom that has made Smith famous fans found humour in his jokes that although bizarre, often share some universal truth.

DiVerseCities: A Voice for the Peace By Kyla Corpuz
NORTH PEACE REGION – Inside Retro Relics sat a glass counter, shelved with novelty nick-knacks, jars of hacky sacks, stacks of rock n’ roll records and the newest addition: two freshly pressed copies of DiVerseCities II. Behind the counter stood Henry See, the man who initially suggested the idea and fabrication of the book in 2009. The second volume of DiVerseCities debuted its release at the Cultural Centre with live readings on Sept. 12. The book is a compilation of writers and poets from Fort St. John to Dawson Creek. For a majority of the 26 writers whose work is featured in DiVerseCities II, this is their first published piece, said See. There are only two writers featured in the book who are previously published authors: Greg Lainsbury and author of Fatty Legs Christy Jordan-Fenton. Though the authors vary in age, See said he wanted the book to be an outlet for high school students who had an interest in writing to showcase their talent.
“It’s a way of building the community,” said See. He also felt there was a gap between local influences and literature and entertainment. “There’s not many TV, movies and books that talk about people here, or whose lives are similar to ours,” said See. “We’re still kind of a pioneering spirit out here.” He sees the book as an element to bridge the two together. Though not all the short stories and poems featured in DiVerseCities II are based on experiences from the North, See said: “The main impetus about it is to have a voice for the Peace.” See is also the owner of Retro Relics and the Rabbit Hole in Fort St. John. On every second Tuesday of the month the shop holds an open mic. Some of the spoken words that were heard during those open mic sessions are now bound between the pages of DiVerseCities II. The mandate of the store is to promote local culture. He added that the financing and publishing of the book was funded through the store. The first DiVerseCities came out in 2009 with 11 authors.
