The North Peace Justice Society hosted their annual Rocky Horror Picture Show fundraiser at the Lido for the volunteer-based organization. The theatre filled up with Rocky Horror fanatics and those who were watching it for the first time. It was an interactive night, with prop bags to play along with the movie. The NPJS helps first-time offenders face their victims and helps them come up with an agreement to repair the harm done. The NPJS Scan Me to Check Us Out Online! relies on community support, said Michelle Laboucane and Candace Peever members at the NPJS.

Co-op Mall announces Pharmasave will walk into Dawson Creek By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- Co-op Mall announced exciting news Thur. Oct. 20, the addition of Pharmasave and a walk-in clinic to their existing space. Construction will begin in a few weeks for an anticipated early January opening. General manager of Co-op, Rod Hillary, Mayor Mike Bernier, Francis Obeta, pharmacist and owner and operator of the Dawson Creek Pharmasave, and Dr. Harry Neveling, who will manage the walk-in clinic, all agree it is long over due in Dawson Creek. “The need for a walk-in clinic in Dawson Creek cannot be overemphasized, this city is due to have a walk-in clinic. When you look at what’s going on around us and you see that people have to drive from Dawson to Grande Prairie because a child has a flu or from Dawson to Fort St. John because a child has a headache to get a prescription you realize that it’s not, with the kind of system that we have… it’s not really humane,” Obeta said. “It’s been far over due, to start a walk-in clinic for the benefit of the public because if you go down there (hospital) the sickest guy gets seen first and then the not so sick person gets three hours in the back of a cube, so I’ve always seen a need for some place where you can comfortably sit and not pick up millions of other germs...more of a relaxed atmosphere,” said Neveling. Pharmasave is leasing the space from Co-op and plan to have a 6,000 square foot pharmacy, a 2,000 square foot walkin clinic with seven examination rooms, it will also have a compound lab so doctors can individualize prescriptions. Dr. Neveling hopes to have the store open 12 hours a day with approximately four doctors on staff at all times. General manager of Co-op, Rod Hillary, believes this will be a great partnership for everyone involved. “We are building our community with a service that is needed and is long over due, this project will be mutually beneficial to everyone involved, it will benefit the citizens of the City as we take the strain off Jill Earl photo the local hospital and health care systems, Francis Obeta unveils the floor plan for the new pharit will benefit the tenants of our mall as macy and walk-in clinic. we’ll see increased customer traffic, it will also benefit the pharmacy and walk-in clinic itself as they enjoy our already established customer base, and finally it will also benefit our Co-op members as it will give a huge boost to our on-going efforts revitalizing our food floor to the grocery store in town that is completely member owned,” Hillary said. Obeta and Neveling are inviting all doctors in the area to become a part of the walk-in clinic. “We have the opportunity to bring in more doctors, local or otherwise. It’s an open clinic for everyone to come in…we are inviting every doctor to come in and be a part of it. It’s our community, we have Wellness & Esthetic Services to help our community,” Obeta said. Obeta says that he’s always wanted to provide the people in

Dawson Creek with better health care. “The vision to start a walk-in clinic has always been in my heart, and to see this come to fulfillment is joy…It is our vision to provide you with not another pharmacy, we are implementing a pharmacy that will provide a family atmosphere, for you to come in. I promise to the residents of Dawson Creek, to provide you with genuine care re-elect and love in your time of need, it is our professional belief that patients are hurting individuals that require love and care to recover and we also believe that that love and care is part of the prescription for recovery,” For Dedicated Service to the Obeta said.

ing that I don’t want to let go and I want to be apart of it,” said Thompson. Thompson owns an oil and gas service company. Telizyn was not available for comment before press. Linda Sewell, Zone 1, Heather Hannaford, Zone 2, Susan Stark, Zone 3 and Ida Campbell Zone 4 were all acclaimed trustees in this year’s election. Representative of each zone don’t necessarily have to live in the area they are in charge of, but their nominators do. Last election, all seven positions were filled by acclamation.
One zone in SD 60 to see election By Kyla Corpuz
SCHOOL DISTRICT 60 – This year’s school district election has four candidates running for three positions in Zone 5, the trustees for the other zones were acclaimed. There are five zones that cover the school district and zone five takes up the most populated area. Current incumbent Jaret Thompson is joined by three new names: Linda Nielsen, Adrian Telizyn and Darrel Pasichynk. School District 60 elections officer Sherry Hunt said one of the reasons why the majority of the trustees were acclaimed is because they have been long-standing representatives on the school board. “We had long-term trustees,” said Hunt. “Our trustees have been here for 19 to 21 years, so I guess people think they’re doing their job and don’t run against them. We don’t have a lot of turn over on the board and we don’t get a lot of new faces.” That is, except for zone five because, even though it may be one of the smallest areas — it takes in the city and has the highest population, according to Hunt. Some of the things school board trustees are responsible for are: decision-making, bargaining with unions and approving and preparing school district operating budgets. “I don’t think people realize the responsibility of a board member,” said Hunt. She added that every district is run differently so some board members are more hands on than others. The role trustees play in the school district is important, especially when it comes to parents. “They’re always the go-to for any parent that has concerns or issues. They [parents] can always go to them and talk about the issues they feel are not being answered somewhere else, perhaps,” said Hunt. Nielsen, former commanding officer of the Fort St. John cadets, is now planning on using her time and effort in helping the community youth once again. If elected she would like to focus on preventing bullying. “My big thing with running for school board is to see bullying addressed and discipline. I would like to see schools in power
so that there’s consequences and parents are involved with it.” Nielsen said she’s heard stories about youth who commit suicide because of the taunting act and wants to make sure it “never gets to that point.” Pasichynk works for DGS Astro Paving. His three sons are his motivation on why he’s running. “Mainly the reason is because my oldest son is in Grade 6 right now and I have a second who will be in Kindergarten next year and my third is two,” said Pasichynk. He hopes to partake in being a voice on what goes on in the school system. He said his background in working with financial issues with DGS Astro Paving would give him a “leg up,” when it comes to school budgets. This is the second time current trustee Thompson is looking for a spot on the school board. His zeal for education is a key element to why he’s running. “Just a passion for education and lots of work that is ongo-

City Council approves transit service proposal By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- Johann van Schaik, Regional Transit Manager for B.C Transit made a presentation about how the City could improve its transit system, during the City Council meeting last Monday. After reviewing concerns and complaints by users, Schaik concluded that most riders were unhappy with trip times due to transferring buses, buses often being late or early, and expressed difficulty getting to and from the Co-op due to the way current routes are designed. Van Schaik presented two service options in his final report, council approved option one; adding an additional route that will
focus on improving service between 13th Street and both malls. This option will also provide two way service between Co-Op Mall and the Dawson Mall, and will reduce the amount of time in between transfers at the Co-Op Mall. Service will increase to approximately 9,100 hours annually from 6,800 hours. “We want to solve these issues that they’re having, and we’re committed to maintaining our transit, we don’t recover a whole lot, 11% recovery is pretty minimal…sometimes the city has to eat up those loses in order to provide a really important service,” said Counc. Cheryl Shuman.

Elections are underway...
Northeast NEWS
EDITORIAL
By Brent Hodson The 2011 municipal elections are now underway. After the nomination period closed on October 14, the candidates have been well underway with their campaigning. Each community will be hosting an All-Candidates Forum and this is a great opportunity to come and meet the candidates, hear what each one has to say and have an opportunity to ask a question. Even if you don’t have a question to ask, this is still a great opportunity to have a listen to the candidates so you can get a sense of what they are wanting do if they are elected. Fort Nelson / Northern Rockies Regional Municipality hosted their forum last week, but I have been told it will be made available online at www.fortnelsonstuff.com. The Fort St. John Arts Council will be hosting a forum for all the candidates that will be dedicated to arts, culture, heritage and tourism. This forum is held on November 3 at 7pm in the Carpet Room at the Cultural Centre. The Fort St. John & District will be hosting the forum on Wednesday, November 9 at 7pm at the Pomeroy Hotel. There will also be a dinner with the mayor candidates at 5:30pm and tickets are available from the Fort St. John Chamber. The District of Taylor will host their forum at the Peace Community Church at 10556 - 100th Street on November 7 at 7pm. In Hudson’s Hope, the Lions Club is hosting one at 7pm on November 2 at the Community Centre. In Chetwynd, you will find their’s on November 3 at 7pm at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites. Tumbler Ridge will host a forum on November 2 at 7:30pm in rooms 4 & 5 of the Community Centre. I hope to see you out and about learning about each candidate in the upcoming elections.

Movember proclamation
By the Charlie Lake Conservation Society
CHARLIE LAKE – Autumn brings that chill to our mornings, heavy dew on our lawns and frost to windshields. It is hard not to notice that smell in the woods that almost has you checking your shoes! For those new to the woods, this is a chance to become acquainted with the highbush cranberry (latin name: Viburnum edule, also known as squashberry). At this time of the year it is a beautiful plant to discover. As a shrub, 0.5 to 2.5 metres in height, its leaves are similar to a maple leaf but have three distinct lobes; however, upper leaves may be elliptical. Leaves, coarsely veined with teeth or serrations, turn red or pinkish at this time of year. The berries ripen in August as a soft, translucent clusters of red fruit. It’s these same berries that have been described as musky or “old socks” smelling. While the berries are not a favourite of many birds, they are a very important survival food as the winter progresses. Grouse, cedar waxwings, robins and grosbeaks are among the birds that feed on its fruit. Like the birds, people have also enjoyed the berries – with lots of sugar that is, in sauces and jellies. Mammals such as deer, moose, squirrels and beaver may feed on the various parts of the high bush cranberry. In addition to food, the bushes also provide birds with shelter from the elements and hiding places from predators. Native highbush cranberry plants, found thoughout the woods in North East British Columbia can be also found across Canada. So this season, let your nose lead you to a wonderful treasure in the woods! For more information go to info@ charlielakeconservationsociety.ca
At Monday’s Fort St. John City Council meeting, the council made the proclamation to make the month of November 2011 as “Movember” in the City of Fort St. John. Brent Hodson and Neil Evans were on hand to accept the proclamation from Mayor Bruce Lantz. This proclamation was made to benefit the upcoming Movember campaign that involves men growing moustaches and raising money for Prostate Cancer Canada. Last year in Fort St. John, over $27,000 was raised. Visit http://ca.movember.com/ for information about Movember and to sign up. The Lido Theatre will be hosting a Movember sign up party on November 1.

Fort St. John steps closer to Mixed Martial Arts events By Kyla Corpuz
According to Goodman, the sport accentuates unnecessary violence. “It is a horrifically unhealthy message for youth … and unsafe for the general public that is subject to the rage that will spill onto the streets,” read an email she submitted to the city. The city also received responses from the RCMP, Pacificsport Northern BC, Fort St. John Chamber of Commerce and the city’s District Sport Council. Though none of the organizations opposed to an Athletics Commission for MMA events, the Fort St. John Chamber of Commerce was the only association with members willing to sit on the board. “We support it as it’s an opportunity to regulate the event,” said Brent Hodson, president of the Fort St. John Chamber of Commerce. “This Kyla Corpuz photo sport can be quite violent … this is an opportu- Shellie English, 33, practices in the cage at a training facility, Iron nity for a commission to be made up by different Rhino, with trainer Justin Donnally. community members, to establish how to regulate how these types of sporting events can be ticipants carry the risk. FORT ST. JOHN – City council deemed there was enough community support for Fort St. John to hold mixed martial art events, despite less than 0.2 per cent of the city’s population voting. On Oct. 11, council gave the city rights to draft a bylaw to allow MMA events. An Athletics Commission, a group that will regulate the sanctioned events, will then review the bylaw. Through polls created by the city, 63 people voted on whether or not they were in favour of MMA events in the city. Forty-five supported the idea and 18 opposed it. Ten residents sent emails that expressed their acceptance of the cause and six individuals volunteered themselves to sit on the Athletics Commission. Stephen Beard, a local fire fighter, sent his consent to the city. He is a trained jiu jitsu fighter and practices MMA. “The type of people who are involved locally in MMA are not fighters looking to prove anything outside of the gym or competitions,” Beard wrote in an email. “They are talented athletes looking to test their skill in the same way as any other competitor.” Though the mainstream sport may have garnered popular attention there are still residents who are opposed to hosting such events. Emily Goodman, local resident, sent the only email that stated an opposition.

School District 59 will see one election this November By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- There will only be one election in School District 59 this November. Trina Commandeur, Richard Powell, and Tamara Ziemer all want the opportunity to represent Electoral Area 3, Dawson Creek as school trustees for the next three years. The area only has space for two board members. Trina Commandeur has lived in Dawson Creek for 24 years, and has seven grown children. She is an advocate of children with special needs and hopes to introduce a Special Education Advisory Council to the board that will meet with the board to discuss concerns and resources for students with special needs. “I am running for school trustee based on accountability, credibility, meaningful consultation, protecting the rights of our most vulnerable students and our students identified as having special needs. I am concerned that for years the current board has been breaking their Oath of Office by bringing in their personal beliefs, traditions and biases against School Act Laws into the publicly funded board room,” Commandeur said in an e-mail. Richard Powell has served as the Chair of the Board for two terms, and was a teacher and a principle before that. He remembers being encouraged to pursue a position on the board and is interested in continuing his work. “I was approached by several people to run because of the expertise I had and the knowledge I had, with that I thought I could probably contribute to the board I also have a vision of where I believe education should go and that’s changed and it’s not going to continue to operate in the little red school house but to be more looking at change because people change, kids change....I’m just interesting in continuing, and I think that we’re leaders in some areas of the province with duo credit programs, and project based education and I think I’d like to see that continued...We’ve started it, I’d like to see it finished and I think over the next three years that we’ve would have a strong foundation of how education is to be handled in School District 59,” Powell said. Tamara Ziemer is also interested in continuing her work as a trustee. Ziemer was elected in to her position in March of last year during a by-election that was due to a trustee leaving the area. She was the PAC president of Ecole Frank Ross before becoming involved on the board. “I was interested because I have kids in the system…at the beginning it was just purely to learn about it...I love it, now I’m starting to be passionate about it. The whole 21st century education stuff, the personalized learning, I mean the way that our district is run and the things that are going on in our district and the teachers that we have, it’s amazing. I like being involved because there is so much change happening right now with the 21st century education that I feel like it’s addressing all the ways that I feel the system failed me when I was in school, so that’s exciting to be apart of,” Ziemer said. Electoral area 1 (Chetwynd and area) will once again be represented by Sorene Kampen, as well as newcomer to the board Anita Prescott. Prescott has been a teacher for 29 years, and is now retired. “I’m retired and I’ve spent all of my life working for the betterment of children so I thought well I’d like to continue in a smaller way so it seemed like a good idea at the time and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. My main concerns will be working for children of course; I’m hoping to be able to possibly look at areas in special education and counseling that sort of thing. I know that our district does very well, but at the same time nothing’s perfect so hopefully we can work together and create a little bit better system for the students... I’m hoping to bring a lot of cohesion there although I think this board is fairly good from what I understand,” Prescott said. Though happy to be representing the area, Prescott wishes the position was not out of acclamation. “Well I’m happy about it certainly, I guess it would have been nicer if more people had applied I think the political process is really valid but I’m certainly really happy that I have gotten in and I’m very pleased that I will representing the school district for Chetwynd...I’ve actually worked with some of the people on the board when they were teachers as well so I think that’s going to help too,” she said. Electoral area 2 (Tumbler Ridge) will be represented by Sherry Berringer, area 4 (Pouce Coupe) by Wayne Ezeard, and area 5 (Sunset Prairie) by Judy Clavier.

Dawson Creek Literacy Now: A love of reading
By Michele Mobley ~ Literacy Outreach Coordinator I got to thinking about where my love of books and reading came from. As an only child, I read a lot! Both my parents were avid readers, which without doubt, fostered my love of books. That led me to wonder why other people never develop that love of reading. For some it’s because reading took a low priority in the home, for one reason or another. Some adults feel overwhelmed by busy lifestyles, and they no longer have the time or the energy to put
towards the pursuit of a good book for themselves or their children. No parent or caregiver sets out to deny their children a love of books and reading, but unfortunately those types of roadblocks set the stage for the rest of a child’s life. Research shows children have a better chance of becoming fully literate adults if reading is encouraged in the home. When a parent or other caring adult reads aloud to children, it helps develop listening skills, vocabulary and language skills, as well as imagination and creativity. Children
raised in literate households are likely to enter grade one with several thousand hours of one to one pre-reading experience behind them; and all it takes is 15 minutes a day! Contact your local literacy society, municipal library, or visit www.literacybc. ca/directory for a list of literacy supports in your area. Michele Mobley is a Literacy Outreach Coordinator for Dawson Creek. She can be reached at literacy.dc@gmail.com or join their Facebook group “Dawson Creek Literacy Now”.

Council supports proposal by potential taxi entrepreneur By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN – The third taxi entrepreneur-hopeful got the support it was seeking from council on Oct. 11. Bernard Thompson wants to start his own business, Bernard’s Taxi Service. If approved it will go against Fort St. John’s near monopoly taxi-giant Teco Cabs that owns two of the three taxi licenses in the city. Energetic HD Cab Company holds the other. Twenty-four cabs are operated in Fort St. John and Teco drives 23. Bernard wants to start off with one taxi cab. He proposed the idea saying his services were much needed in the city, to provide “exemplary taxi service.” He proposed that his service would have a $3 initial flat rate, and if approved would have direct taxi phone lines at the mall and airport. He added that he would provide rates as low as $10 fares to the airport. With the current taxi service, lifts to the airport cost approximately $30.

He ensured that it would be child accessible, but not handicap accessible. He did add that if he was approved and had a steady fleet, handicapped accessible taxis would be taken into consideration. Thompson provided 126 letters of support, and with the reaction of council members, there were a couple of more names to add to the list. “I appreciate your initiative to provide better cab service to Fort St. John,” said Coun. Lori Ackerman. This is Thompson’s first attempt at starting his own taxi business, but as Ackerman recalled there were two entrepreneurs prior to him that also wanted to start a taxi business but were not approved. According to Coun. Bruce Christensen the City of Fort St. John and Tourism Fort St. John considered whether or not there should be a more competitive taxi market. They found that the amount of cabs currently servicing the city is considered to be “more than enough” for the size of Fort St. John.
CITY OF FORT ST. JOHN NOTICE OF ELECTION BY VOTING PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY given to the electors of the City of Fort St. John that an election by voting is necessary to elect a Mayor, six Councillors, and three School Trustees, for a term commencing December 2011 and that the persons nominated as candidates and for whom votes will be received are:

A group of 16 kids ages two to nine gathered at Lilies and Lavender for a free crafts workshop for Family Week on Oct. 21.
“And though that may be true, there are only three or four cabs out on the street,” said Christensen. “They denied the request for another taxi individual for a taxi license, so I whole heartedly support Bernard’s application to get this. I don’t know how we can convince the individuals down south on how we can get another taxi.” Coun. Dan Davies suggested that council address this issue as soon as possible instead of waiting for the new council to be sworn in, as originally suggested earlier in the meeting. Ackerman said if any city business trips were going to be made to Victoria, Fort St. John’s taxi industry would be addressed to the Ministry of Transportation. Last month local shuttle driver Mike Brewer’s application to provide handicap accessible taxis and shuttle and limousine services was turned down by the Passenger Transportation Board. The PTB concluded that it wasn’t confident Brewer could provide the services he was proposing and was unsure how it would provide “sound economic conditions” in the BCPT industry.

Wiebo’s controversial documentary shows in Fort St. John By Kyla Corpuz
FORT ST. JOHN – Last week in Fort St. John and multiple cities across Canada Wiebo Ludwig’s protest against oil and gas industries made it to the big screen. Director David York, an atheist, documented the Ludwig Christian family in Wiebo’s War. In the opening scenes of the documentary, York said he thought he would be telling a story of Ludwig’s life after his sentence in 2001, when he was convicted of multiple charges related to oil and gas well bombings in Alberta. Wiebo accused the sour gas plants that leaked onto his property as the culprit to his livestock aborting and the women in his family having miscarriages. As York’s days with the Ludwigs progressed, York found himself documenting more than he bargained for. He captured the events when Wiebo was suspected as the man behind the 2008/2009 EnCana bombings. In 2010 Wiebo was arrested but never charged. The documentary also recapped the shooting death of 16-year-old Karman Willis on the Ludwig’s property, Trickle Creek. Throughout all of Wiebo’s accusations of alleged crimes, he did not plead guilty. The Lido screened the movie in Fort St. John and before it aired — many people took to a local news website’s comment section, expressing their thoughts on the theatre showing Wiebo’s War.
On Oct. 13, user DrdDrt wrote: Are you sure this is the type of sensationalism the Lido wants to be associated with? I know the comedy tour is growing old but this kind of anti oil patch propaganda Lido really? I hope all your seats are empty and you reap the repercussions of this poorly thought out programming glitch. Just sayin. Shame on you. The night of the showing however, Brian Kirschner, owner of the theatre, stated that The Lido is non denominational and that it doesn’t support or oppose different viewpoints. He added that the theatre is merely a place for the public to experience different forms of entertainment. Wiebo was supposed to be at the showing for a question and answer period, but that is now postponed to a later date, according to Kirschner. Wiebo was sick during the showings in Fort St. John and in recent news reports he revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer. Wiebo’s War was supposed to show for two nights but only showed on Oct. 19.

Peace River Regional District to renew 34 year-old parks and trails master plan By Jill Earl
over the years we’re starting to find a little bit through the surveys and through the open houses that some people are not aware of them, so I think it’s important even as a region to let our residents know that we’ve got parks that are here for them to use, in the past we didn’t advertise them but we need to do some work now,” said Morgan about the 34 year-old plan. “In some ways it was a management plan too, it did talk a lot about keeping the parks very rustic, which I think through some of the surveys people have said ‘yeah keep them rustic’ we don’t necessarily need power and water and things like that, we have to look at what is the definition of rustic, does that mean that we maintain the roads? We’ve found that in some arFacial aesthetics eas that maybe we need to do a Medical Botox little more work on that sort of Cosmetic Botox thing, but still maintaining that, Fillers it’s supposed to be an outdoor Laser place it should look like the outdoors,” she said. Book online at To entice more feedback, the www.mediskin.ca Region is drawing two names or email for iPod shuffles for people mediskin@ymail.com who have filled out surveys.
DAWSON CREEK- For the past two weeks the Peace River Regional District has hosted information sessions in ten communities throughout the region. The region is looking for feedback on their parks and trails, the information gathered by talking to attendees and analyzing paper and online surveys will help contribute to the Regional Parks and Trails Master Plan. The Region currently has five parks: Blackfoot Park, Montney Centennial Park, Minaker River Park, Spencer Tuck Park, and Sundance Lake Regional Park. “We wanted to find out if people are using those parks, what they think about the parks also if there is a need or opportunity for more parks and also how can we support trails in our region there’s a lot of user groups that develop trails and maintain trails and they are important for recreation and for tourism and for a lot of other reasons. We haven’t really been involved in that as a regional district and so we are looking to see if there is a need or want to support those groups that do that work,” said Trish Morgan, Manager of Community Services for the district. The Region maintains the parks, mostly addressing safety concerns and doing roadwork. “Just maintaining... fix a broken board on a picnic table, you run a grater over in the spring to make it nice for the summer, things like that, staff members giving a regular check-out, clearing a bad tree out or something like that... just simple maintaining...The parks have just soldiered on, being given maintenance and being kept pretty neat and watching the safety concerns and when there’s such a demand on the Board there, the entire Regional District Board for this or that and money and everything, it just gets over looked and it’s working, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Now we’ve decided it needs, to be not necessarily fixed, but improved,” said Parks Committee member and Mayor of Pouce Coupe Lyman Clark. The last Parks and Trails Master Plan was done in 1977, 34 years ago. “Staff actually brought the idea to the committee the idea of having a master plan, we wanted to have a long term vision for where our parks are going because this isn’t something that we’ve done in a very long time in the Regional District...it was time to do another one and create a long term vision and rather then being reactive to things in our parks like a broken picnic table, or Contributed photo it might be nice to put this in here or that in there, Fran Haughian presents first winner of the People. and then we thought let’s create a proper plan iPod draw Tracey Goodman and her daughter Above Evangelina with their all. prize. that guides us over the next ten years on where we’re going to go with it,” said Morgan. The Region is looking for 250.228.4231 information about: different joanne.ferreiro@shaw.ca uses of the parks, who uses the parks, and opportunities for growth. According to Morgan, over Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island the last couple of years the region has had other priorities and an updated master plan wasn’t one of them until now. “It was kind of interesting to see the perspective, the perspective at that time was that we didn’t want to advertise our parks because then people from outside our region would know Have it all.. an ‘industrial scale’ workshop as a base for your Have it all... an ‘industrial scale’ about them and come use them, home business, a lovely home and room for your horses too! workshop as aacres, base your well we want people to use our • Multipurpose property; 2.68 offersfor country living, pasture magnificent workshop. a lovely home and parks, I think the perspective andhome business, has just changed now. BizPal helps local business
Five municipalities in the Peace region now have access to an online source, BizPal, meant to make starting a business easier and faster. Dawson Creek, Hudson’s Hope, Fort St. John, Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge are among the 40 B.C. cities and districts able to use BizPal. Minister of State small business and tourism Maxime Bernier and B.C. Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell welcomed the launch of the online tool on Oct. 19. “Our government is committed to providing small and medium-sized businesses with the tools they need to succeed,” said Bernier in a press release. BizPal gives entrepreneurs access to information on the permits and licences needed to establish and run a business. According to the press release, the online service benefits Canadian businesses by helping them identify what permits and licences are needed and how to obtain them. Though the service is primarily online, it can also be reached through the telephone or in-person. In the 2011 budget, BizPal was allocated $3 million annually in funding.
Man who died in RCMP custody FORT ST. JOHN - In the early morning of Sept. 10, Cheryl Ackerstrom, a Fort St. John local, was advised by the RCMP that her long-time boyfriend Brett Lohouse, 46, died. Lohouse died in custody of the RCMP on Sept. 9, 2011. Ackerstrom and Lohouse met in Calgary and moved up to Fort St. John nine and a half years ago. She described him as someone who enjoyed having fun on the streets and being with friends. “I loved his laugh,” said Ackerstrom. She said he enjoyed playing cards and swimming, but that he hated “farm life”. Ackerstrom recalled the days when they would go out and have dinner. She said he talked about his family a lot and she plans on going back to Alberta sometime next year.

Legislation tabled to make Canadian Wheat Board voluntary By Jill Earl
DAWSON CREEK- Minister of Agriculture Gerry Ritz tabled the Marketing Freedom for Grain Farmers Act earlier last week that would make the Canadian Wheat Board voluntary. If the Act is passed, farmers could market their own grain as early as August 1, 2012. Since 1943 western Canadian grain farmers have had to market their grain through the CWB, the only entity in Canada in which to do this. It was first introduced to control inflation and to provide a cheap supply of grain to Europe for WW2. MP for Cypress Hill and Grasslands, Sask., and Parliamentary Secretary of Natural Resources and Parliamentary Secretary for the Canadian Wheat Board, David Anderson has been a farmer for 25 years and has been campaigning for a voluntary CWB ever since he was elected 10 years ago. He says that the Board has always been expensive for farmers. “Even from it’s initiation when the Wheat Board was put in it was expensive for farmers it’s continued to be expensive for farmers and many farmers across Western Canada for decades have felt they needed to get free of that and make their own choices about how they want to market their own product,” Anderson said. Only organic farmers have the ability to market their own grain, but the Board still charges each farmer for every bushel they sell. Anderson believes that the board provides an uncertain future for farmers, as they do not have to buy all their grain, or even sell it for the highest price. “Their mandate has been that they are to orderly market the grain in western Canada, there’s no mandate there to get the highest price or anything like that, it’s just to make sure they have the mandate of marketing the grain, so there’s an obligation by the farmers to supply the grain to the Wheat Board and the Wheat Board can take whatever amount they want or reject whatever amount they want. On one hand the farmers have to deliver everything to them, on the other hand the Wheat Board does not have to take all of it, they just take what they want,” he said. “Typically you would sign a contract with the Wheat Board for a certain amount of money and then they would decide if they would take it or not and if they didn’t take it then you were stuck with the grain and I guess my question over the years to people is how can you run a business when you have 30-40% of your inventory sitting in your storage area for a year or two at a time, it’s just impossible. That’s why we’re saying we need to give famers the opportunity to market their own grain, make their own choices, if they want to deal with the voluntary Wheat Board they can do that,” Anderson said. In September the Canadian Wheat Board had a plebiscite, the results being that majority of grain and barley producers want to keep the current single-desk system. “They voted to maintain the single desk and that’s the key element of the Canadian Wheat Board as it exists today, and the single desk is the primary asset that the Canadian Wheat Board has, without the single desk which means that it’s the ultimate seller of all wheat and barley to the export markets, without that primary asset it will be the weakest player in the grain industry, and we as a board have said is that you’re going to go to an open market and to have the Wheat Board voluntary it will become a grain company without any chance of survival or sustainability,” said Bill Toews, an elected Director of the Canadian Wheat Board. Toews believes that few farmers would be interested in maintaining contracts with the Board
as they don’t own any facilities, and will soon be rendered obsolete by it’s competitors if the act passes. “The Canadian Wheat Board doesn’t own any facilities whatsoever, so it’s reliant on the primary elevator companies and terminal companies… these will be our direct competitors, so what the legislation is saying is that the Wheat Board will have to somehow move and buy grain using our competitions facilities to handle that grain, that’s just impossible to do... The Wheat Board will essentially be in a situation where it would be competing with the grain companies and the grain companies are not going to give it an opportunity to take any more then they want to give them in terms of profitability,” Toews said. Toews also believes that the price of grain will go down, and that farmers will be getting less money for their investment if the Board becomes voluntary. “The reality is that right now they operate through the single-desk which means that if a customer in Asia or in Europe wants to buy Canadian grain, which is a particularly good quality product, they have to come through the Board. In the future these customers will be saying well there’s five or six or seven grain companies that will sell me this grain, I’m going to see whose going to give me the lowest price obviously, and ultimately the price to return to farmers will be lower,” Toews said. Fluoride Information Presentation Wednesday, November 2, 2011 Lido Theatre 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The City of Fort St. John will be hosting an information session on the use of fluoride in drinking water at the Lido Theatre on Wednesday, November 2, 2011. This session is being held to provide residents with information regarding the pros and cons of adding fluoride to the City’s drinking water. A question regarding whether the City should continue to fluoridate the water supply will be on the City’s local government election ballot on November 19, 2011. Dr. James Beck, from the University of Calgary, will do a presentation in favour of fluoride removal and Dr. Arthur Conn, Assistant Chief Dental Officer, Health Canada will be making a presentation in favour of fluoride retention. There will be a moderated question and answer period after both presentations to allow residents to obtain additional clarification. Please contact Janet Prestley, Chief Election Officer or Grace Fika, Deputy Chief Election Officer at (250) 787-8153 for additional information regarding the upcoming election.

DAWSON CREEK- Students enrolled in the Residential Construction program at Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek are building towards their futures, and also the community’s future in their latest project. The students have been assigned to build a house for the South Peace Community Resources Society’s Reconnect program. The students have been hard at work since mid-September and will continue until the projects’ completion in late April. Sub-contractors will work on electrical, plumbing, and heating. The skills gained will help students more readily enter the trades. “They get level one and level two of their carpentry technical training as well as hours towards their apprenticeships and from there they can go out into the field becoming apprentices and come back for level two and level three for their technical training,” said Jeff Lekstrom, Dean of Trades and Apprenticeship. The Residential Construction program has taken on big construction projects like this one since it started seven years ago. The program has completed a number of residential homes in the area, and an airport terminal in Chetwynd. “It’s a great community partnership program for us to be involved in, with the youth of Dawson Creek and SPCRS as well. It’s a win-win for everybody, we find that it’s a great program for the students, it’s a great program for the community and by the end of April we’ll have a nice building standing here and SPCRS can occupy it and help the youth of Dawson Creek,” said Lekstrom about the school’s involvement in the project.
Continued from Page 21 However, Anderson believes that the change will only help farmers. He gives Australia as an example of a country that has moved from private to voluntary and has benefitted from it. “Grain acreage has gone up so there’s been more value added and the farm economy has been strong, so I think we’re in a good position to take advantage of people’s ability to make their own decisions,” Anderson said. He also thinks that the move will mean more opportunity to the industry. “We believe that this will open up a ton of new opportunities for farmers, they’ll be able to, for example, be able to contract on

Kaylee Herrington is one of the eight students enrolled in the program. She likes the hard work and looks forward to completion. “I’d like to think that it’ll be a great thing because I’ll always be able to look back and say I built that,” Herrington said. Reconnect served 127 youth between the ages of 13 and 19 last year in their drop-in and outreach program. The program provides support to teens who may be at risk of dropping out of school, or are having difficulty transitioning from childhood to adulthood. “The supports she (staff) provides to the youth are many, it might be they have some concerns they need to take care of, they need to connect with say a drug and alcohol worker, or might be a ministry staff person and sometimes they just need the support to get those things done,” Arden Smith said, Department Manager for Family Safety Counseling and Support Services for SPCRS. The new house is located at the same address as the old house on 103 Ave. The new house will offer a more spacious setting, additional storage, an office, and an up-to-date kitchen; a big improvement from the old one Smith says. “The old building was very small, it was a one bedroom house initially I think, and it had very tiny little kitchen space where they tried to do some of their cooking projects, and it was just really cramped, it had plumbing issues and it heaved and shifted so much with all the rain last spring that we couldn’t even open the spare door anymore, it was in pretty bad shape,” Smith said. niche grains so smaller amount of grains… Another one is last week in Regina one of the Pulse, specialty crop processor announced that they want to set up a processing pasta plant, that’s the first grain pasta plant that has been proposed in western Canada for decades but they said it’s dependant on them being able to go directly to the farmers to buy their product. So there’s already some opportunities becoming evident and we think there’s going to be lots more of that,” Anderson said. Besides the economic wealth Anderson expects the Act will bring, he believes the underlying issue is freedom. “So it’s really an issue of freedom to be able to do your own business, run your own business the way that they want and if other farmers want to support the Wheat Board they should be

FORT ST. JOHN – Halloween is just around the corner and for those looking for a one-night costume, Fairy Wings and Things is ready to suit you up. Amber Lindley has an array of rental costumes from villains to super heroes and storybook characters. Her costume haven, as she likes to call it: her happy place, is also stocked with props and wigs to complete different looks. “I buy more costumes every year, it’s kind of my addiction,” said Lindley. Aside from Lindley’s full-time job, she uses her vacation time to manage Fairy Wings and Things. She helps customers play dress-up and assists them in finding their perfect alter ego for all sorts of Halloween festivities. “Typically the people who come here aren’t as passionate about Halloween, so they want help,” she said. “I like helping people find that perfect costume or that thing that makes them enjoy Halloween as much as I do.” A rental costume store comes in handy, especially for Glenda Sterelaev’s daughter who was on the hunt for the perfect bridal look. Sterelaev said they were on the look out for quite some time but other options were too expensive for a one-time wear. “We just wanted something we could wear this year and be done with it,” said Sterelaev. Lindley found that was the case with most of her clients. “Most people don’t ever want to wear them again,” said Lindley. “The average person wants it to be easy, to come, do Lorraine and Marnie of the Hair Bin and the HB Health & their thing [event] and not have Body Wellness and Spa Are excited to welcome Becky and to deal with it after.” staff of Becky’s Hair Artists to their team as of Nov 1, 2011. Lindley preps and cleans them once they are returned. She has always been an avid costume collector and maker, so starting Fairy Wings and Things six years ago seemed inevitable. “When I was in junior high school, I was sort of the Halloween girl in school,” said Stephanie John Shauna Apryl Becky Lindley. Have a Safe, Fun Halloween! Bring all your goodies home to be checked before eating. BE SEEN – Parents and children should wear bright costumes or clothing made of flame-resistant material with reflective tape, or carry light sticks or a flashlight—it’s important that motorists can see you clearly. Make eye contact with motorists. Consider trick-or-treating in a group and staying together. Don’t forget to: stop, look left, right and left again—before crossing the street. Always cross the street at corners and crosswalks. If there isn’t a sidewalk, walk beside the road or street facing traffic. CAN YOU SEE CLEARLY? – Face painting is often a safer choice for trick-or-treaters than a mask which can obscure vision. Stay on sidewalks and driveways and off of lawns and gardens. Go up one side of the street and down the other rather than crossing the street between houses. Avoid alleys, parking lots, wooded areas and vacant lots. DRESS APPROPRIATELY – To prevent falls, make sure your child’s costume fits well and it isn’t too long or has too much loose fabric. Dress for the weather, so your child and you are comfortable and warm. ADULT SUPERVISION – Young children should always have a responsible adult escorting them door-to-door on Halloween night. Skip past houses that don’t have their porch lights on, and avoid animals that are unfamiliar. PUMPKIN CARVING – Kids under six years of age should not use knives or other sharp instruments to carve pumpkins. Instead, they can be creative and draw a face on the pumpkin, or dress it up with colourful fall leaves or other safe materials. Parents should use a flashligh or a light stick to light a pumpkin rather than a candle. Children are attracted to candles, but they don’t understand flames are hot and can cause serious harm.
CHECK TREATS THOROUGHLY – Parents and children should make sure that all treats are checked by an adult before eating. Discard treats that aren’t in sealed packaging or look suspicious. When in doubt, throw it nout! CHOKING – Choking occurs most frequently among children under two years of age, but choking can happen at any age. Do not give children under five years of age popcorn, hard candy, nuts, or rubber balloons. When eating candy, parents should have children sit at a table since eating while playing, running, jumping, or talking can lead to a choking episode. Parents and caregivers should learn what to do in a choking emergency.

Children under the age of nine should be accompanied by an adult or responsible older child since they lack the developmental skills to cross the street on their own. This is a year-round tip that will help keep your child safe while you share good pedestrian habits and pass on a legacy of safety-minded behaviour. Teach your child to stop at the curb, look left, right and left again, and to listen for oncoming traffic. This vital skill is especially important when children are distracted and excited. Never rely on traffic signals alone - use your eyes and ears to make sure it’s safe to cross. Drive slowly in residential areas where children are more likely to be trick-ortreating. Did you know that drivers cannot accurately judge their own speed when driving? The higher the speed, the less likely you are to see a child pedestrian, and the harder it is to stop quickly. Watch out for kids, many of whom may be wearing costumes with masks that make it difficult for them to see. With the excitement of Halloween, children may forget simple pedestrian safety rules. They have a tendency to dart out in the most unexpected places - the most common being between parked cars. Remember also that costumes can limit a child’s vision and they may not be able to see your vehicle.
